The book Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry mainly deals with the struggles of one family trying to deal with racism and the effects it has on them and their lives. This is important to black people because it was not to long ago that slavery was ended. Racism in this book affects the characters because they didn’t try to stop the hatred that was going on in their community. It is also about the fact that laws were not followed as they are supposed to. This was done by not treating everyone the same. For example, when schoolbooks were given to the black community, they were books that the white kids destroyed and were to be discarded so they were given to the black kids.

There are several conflicts in this story. They are man vs. man, man vs. society, and man vs. nature. I will first talk about man vs. man, this happens when the two white boys fought T.J. Avery and accused him of robbing a store. In man vs. society, the hatred that was happening in Mississippi at that time is proof of this conflict. Finally the conflict with man vs. nature happens when Little Man springs out of his chair and throws down the book and step on it. Because of the racism in the story the conflicts are both internal and external. They deal mainly with racism and the effects it has on the people and their lives.

The turning point of this book is when the Logans cotton field catches fire to try and stop the distraction. The whole event of the story and what is happening changes. Everyone around the fire was trying to hang someone or not trying to get burned. Once the fire was started everyone stopped what they where doing to help put out the fire. The climax of the story is when everyone stopped to put out the fire no matter if it was black or white, hate or dislike was not the issue at the time. This is also the resolution because the prejudice is gone for a moment. The falling action is when everyone goes home.

The setting of Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry takes place during the 10’s in rural Mississippi. The setting of Mississippi has an important effect on the story and the white people there were very racist. The point of view in this novel basically creates the whole story because it is a child telling the whole story and not the average adult. Cassie Logan tells the whole story in extreme detail, since everything has to do with her life and innocence. The mood in the story also plays a big roll. The mood is suspense, happiness and peace all as one.

There are several themes in the book Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry. One of the themes could be best described as when someone feels that everything has went wrong, he could still have the pride of his family and friends. Courage comes only to those who earn it could be the other theme. The last theme involves the difficult situation life presents to you and the need to stand tall and don’t let anyone bring you or your confidence down.

In conclusion to Roll of Thunder Hear My cry I thought that the book was very interesting, but I wouldn’t read it again because of all of the racism in the book and I don’t like to hear nor read about racism. I would tell all of my friends about this book, because I think that this is a good book. I also think that my friends would enjoy this book, better than I would. The only time that I would read this book is when I have to do a book report or project. Other than that I thought the book was a wonderful book.

Frederick Wilson

Draft of Essay 1

Edward Abbey was born January , 17 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. He grew up in the Depression in a family always on the verge of poverty. His father worked many jobs to support the family. His mother taught school and played the organ in church. His father was a dedicated socialist. His mother was an early proponent of ordination for homosexuals.

Canyonlands National Park, Utah is where the season in Wilderness begins, specifically in the park which is his home base, he has a” little tin government housetrailer” in which he lived for six months of summer during three different seasons, he watches over the Arches National Monument. He travels this expanse of land, containing arches, carved out by the desert rock over time of erosion I guess. Cleaning up after weekend tourists, looking for lost or confused hikers, and simply taking part in the world of nature, which surrounds him.

In the introduction of Desert Solitaire his love for the desert is easy to see. When he quotes “Those were all good times, especially the first two seasons when the tourist business was poor and the time passed extremely slowly, as time should pass, with the days lingering and long, spacious and free as the summers of childhood.” When you read the author talks about the desert so much its like the desert is playing a role.

Each essay in the book unfolds uniquely in its own way. The author is simply writing out of the world that he stays in. It is not hype or fun to him, it is simply just his world. But he explains it in a way as to draw every bit of goodness from it. The author writes of things importance. He writes of the land surrounding him and its like he cherishes every moment. He writes to preserve the nature that he is a part of and it is disappearing so fast. He also writes so other people may also take part in enjoying nature.

Black Like Me Skin Color

What is the value of skin color? In the biological point of view, it is worth nothing. In the social point of view, it represents community standings, dignity, confidence or something people have never imagined. In the story Black Like Me, by John Howard Griffin, a white Southern reporter, who is the author and the main character, experienced an unforgettable journey in the Deep South. Mr. Griffin has a heart, which is filled with curiosity; he therefore undertook a significant project. He took several medical treatments to change his skin pigments from white to black in order to write a report. To create a successful project, Griffin had to leave his wife to be a temporary African American. Being an African American brought him many unfair encounters. However, after he changed back to a Caucasian, the attitude of everyone had immediately turned, and they treated him well. Mr. Griffin felt bad, and he told everyone about his experiences by writing books and attending press interviews. Throughout these hard times, one can read this book and find out the characteristics of the author, how he saw the light bulb, and the truth that he wanted people to understand.

Mr. Griffin was a middle age white man who lived with his wife and children. He was not oriented to his family. He decided to pass his own society to the black society. Although this decision might help most of the African Americans, he had to sacrifice his gathering time with his family. “She offered, as her part of the project, her willingness to lead, with our three children, the unsatisfactory family life of a household deprived of husband and father” (Griffin ). Leaving Mrs. Griffin and his children would deprive them of the care they needed. Even though he was not oriented to his family, he was full of courage. He was willing to discuss topics that people hesitated to talk about, trying new ideas that people were afraid to do. After turning back to his own skin color, he attended most media conferences and also wrote books about what he had gone through. During those interviews, Griffin was very considerate. He requested Wallace, a reporter, to report carefully so that he would not hurt his African American friends. “Please… Don’t mention those names on the air. I’d be afraid their lives would be endangered, and they were my friends” (Griffin 14). In addition, he was a man who never gave up. He insisted on remaining among the black people despite how he was looked down upon by the whites.

Griffin was very civilized. He would not use violence to solve the problem, even if he were treated badly by the whites. He gained success after conquering over all of the difficulties, and his persistence should be taken as an example by the people of today.

During adverse circumstances, Mr. Griffin saw the reality of the cruel world. On his way to Mississippi, he rode on a bus, and there was a ten-minute break. He asked the driver whether he could go to the restroom or not. The driver forbade him and commanded him to go back to his seat. Then, Griffin tries to argue with him. “No sir, but the others --- you mean I can’t go to the“(Griffin 6)--- He did not have a chance to argue, because the driver kept on interrupting him. From this incident Griffin realized that the blacks always did not have a chance to protest. In addition, after he turned back to a white, in the same place the same people treated him totally different surprisingly! He was so shocked when everyone surrounded him with smiles and courtesy because he forgot that he was not a black. “I was the same man who could not possibly have bought his way into this room a week ago” (Griffin 1). People should not judge a man by only his or her skin color. Although they have different colors, it does not represent that they have a bad heart.

The author wanted people to understand that there were many unfair cases in the world, but everyone has to be brave to face it. He once read a case from the newspaper. In Mississippi, there was a white man who killed a black man, but he was released. In fact, besides the Deep South, there were many similar cases. Racism is getting more serious in this world. People should care about each other regardless of their nationality, then the universe will become more harmonious. Moreover, people should learn from Griffin’s bravery. He was willing to tell everyone what he experienced and how white people do wrong. Everyone should always strive for the rights, which they deserve.

Black Like Me was a very touching, adventurous, enlightened, famous book. I have never been discriminated by someone. However, my friend has experienced this pitiful fate. Being discriminated by someone is not hard to bear with. Furthermore, I believe that this is a very persuasive book for recommending to friends. In Mr. Griffin’s report, readers can clearly see what was happening to the African Americans in those days, how much effort they have to put in order to survive in that cruel world. After reading this book, one might change to a better point of view. Finally, one will realize how brave the author was, how he found the truth and the fact that he wanted everyone to know.

With such a background it is easy to see why tourism is a big component of its gross national product. The well being of the Egyptian economy is highly dependent on a good year of tourism. The whole business of tourism has relied on the ancient monuments and relics of the past, but in recent years there has been a huge effort to create more modern tourist attractions like resorts and golf courses. The combinations of the old and new attractions comprise the biggest sector of the Egyptian economy.

For the most part it is said that Egypt consists basically of six different tourist sites. Three of the sites; Alexandria, Hurghada, and Sharm El Sheikh are coastal hotspots. They consist of many of the newer resorts offering many activities to its guests like water sports, casinos, nightclubs, and golf courses. The other three sites; Aswan, Cairo, and Luxor are the more historical tourist sites.

Although Aswan doesn’t hold that many historical monuments, the other two, Cairo and Luxor, are overflowing with them.

Within a few of these sites are contained some of the most awe inspiring and ancient monuments known to man. Now when you first hear the word Egypt, you directly focus your attention to the Great Pyramids of Giza. It is easily one of Egypt’s most visited monuments and one of the world’s largest tourist attractions. The ancient Greeks considered the pyramids to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

One of the greatest things about the Sphinx is that the purpose of it is still unknown and highly debated on.

The Sphinx is known in Arabic as Abu El Hol, which means “Father of Terror”.

The actual name of Sphinx was given by the Greeks, who believed it was a representation of the mythical winged monster with a woman’s head and lion’s body who proposed a riddle to the Thebans and killed all who could not get the correct answer (Tourism and Entertainment). Many of the artifacts found near or in these ancient Egyptian monuments are now stored in the Egyptian Museum. The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities was built in 1858 right in the middle of Cairo at Al Tahrir Square. The museum itself houses more then 100,000 of Egypt’s relics and antiques from virtually every period of its history. The exhibits are arranged chronologically starting with the Old Kingdom and going all the way up to the Roman Empire. “If you spend one minute at each exhibit, it will take you nine months to see everything”(Tourism and Entertainment). You can just imagine the shear size of this massive building just by the last statement (Tourism and Entertainment).

The population of the country of Egypt is roughly 60 million people. Now just imagine how important the tourism sector is to the population when 10 million people have jobs directly or indirectly related to it.

This is easy to see when you find out that the average visiting businessperson spends about $40.00 a day.. In 10, the gross domestic product reached 4 billion, of which 10% of that was a product of tourism. With the average number of tourists each year around 4. million spending about .5 billion annually, it’s easy to see why the percentage is so high (Zohery).

One of the problems is that many of Egypt’s ancient monuments are being adversely affected by the high amount of tourist traffic to the area. Affects of this have already been seen. In February of 188, a 500-pound chunk of limestone fell off of the Sphinx. What used to be true was that these great historical monuments had been protected for centuries by huge drifts of sand that have long since been cleared away to make more room for the tourists. What is happening as a result of this high traffic is all the evaporation that occurs. This leaves salt deposits in the pyramid, which wears away the stone, and this also happens on the walls where the art on the monuments are wearing away. Until recently, traffic was allowed extremely close to the monuments. What this did was to make small rumbles in the ground, which over time has started cracks in many of the monuments. Another problem Egypt has is its high pollution. All the smog from the cars and factories are producing acid rain that is falling on the monuments mostly made of limestone and wearing them down.

The Egyptian government needs to take some precautionary action to counteract or at least soften the blow of many of these environmental factors. The country itself boasts about 10,000 antique sites that are irreplaceable.. The tourist sector reached an all time low with 10 million employees affected with a 0% unemployment rate. Another incident, this one of terrorism, occurred in 17 when there was a massacre of 0 foreign tourists in Luxor. Total visitors to the country the following year fell 1%. Only in recent months have the number of tourists begun to reach the amounts it used to be (TED).

While the Egyptian government is making an attempt to develop more tourist attractions to the country, they need to preserve the ones that they already have. Only with a combination of both the old and the new will the Egyptian tourism sector continue to thrive.

This dead butcher and his fiend like queen, is the way in which Malcolm describes Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Describe the way in which these two characters changed during the course of the play.

At the beginning of the play Macbeth is seen as a courageous soldier who is loyal to the King but is corrupted from the witches prophecies and by his and Lady Macbeth’s ambition. This is because of the weakness of Macbeth’s character and the strong power of Lady Macbeth and how she is easily able to influence him. Her strength motivates him at the start but after he realises what he has done it is himself that continues in his murderous, bloody path. At the beginning of the play Lady Macbeth appears as a kind wife of Macbeth’s but underneath lies a scheming and treacherous woman.

In the beginning of the play Macbeth is a strong soldier who fights for the King without mercy but his strive for ambition and his curious nature leads him to the witches who give him a prophecy. Banquo realises that there must be a trick hidden in the witches prophecies somewhere but Macbeth refuses to accept that, and when Lady Macbeth finds out about the witches her strong desire for ambition and her cold nature leads Macbeth astray. Macbeth is a little ambitious at first, but Lady Macbeth’s far exceeds his and so she is able to get Macbeth to agree with her to kill King Duncan. Macbeth still has a conscience at this stage because he is very hesitant about killing the King but his weak nature over comes him. He has a conscience throughout the entire play as this is seen by the hallucinations of the dagger and the ghost of Banquo and his vivid imagination and his constant worry also provokes him. This is also evident in his terrible dreams which gives the solid theme that he has indeed murdered sleep.

Throughout the play we see the character of Macbeth change not from just the way he thinks and what we hear from the play, but from the actions he takes in the play, from killing Banquo, then having Lady Macduff and her children murdered, shows the insecurity that was present in Macbeth. After the murder of Duncan Macbeth becomes paranoid and his first step of killing the guards is one of many that Macbeth takes to secure himself. Macbeth is also very superstitious and this is shown when he believes the prophecy the witches told him that Banquo’s offspring would become Kings.

Towards the end of the play when Macbeth’s wife has died and the battle is drawing closer Macbeth shows some good which may have been. He wishes for a normal life for which he would have lived to an honourable age but he recognises that he has denied himself of this. Even when Macbeth hears that the prophecy has become true of Birnam Wood coming to Dunsinane, he rejects this idea and fights on until he realises that Macduff wasn’t born in a natural birth but instead was Untimely ripped from his mother’s womb. When Macbeth hears of this he realises what he has done and how he has been tricked by the witches but instead he realises that it is useless and so he fights on only to be slain.

Macbeth can be summarised into a character although strong physically he is very weak mentally and it is this weakness which causes the downfall and change of Macbeth. Other factors do however also contribute to this change such as his wife whose ambition is very strong at first and is much more stronger mentally than Macbeth but it is also Macbeth’s ambition and his trust in the witches which ultimately change him.

Lady Macbeth seems to be almost opposite compared to that of Macbeth in physical and mental power. Lady Macbeth is the person who is able to persuade Macbeth into killing Duncan, assuring Macbeth that it will succeed, as Lady Macbeth’s ambition is far greater than that of Macbeth. This change in the character of Lady Macbeth is apparent after she reads the letter from Macbeth as she goes and talks to the evil spirits to make herself evil with lines such as Fill me from the crown to the toe-top full of direst cruelty! Make thick my blood. She goes to the extent of planning the murder of Duncan and assumes full responsibility of this. She exerts a lot of power over Macbeth in this part of the play and even calls him a coward and this shows just how determined she is and how much ambition she has for her husband. It is this confidence in herself plus the persuasiveness on her words that makes Macbeth act on her words without hesitating.

After performing the necessary acts in preparation for the murder of Duncan she thinks of performing the act herself but shows a sign of humanity and doesn’t because it resembles My father as he slept. After the muder has been done Lady Macbeth shows just how strong a person she really is by using kind words and confidence to clam Macbeth down and prevent him going insane. Lady Macbeth however jokes with Macbeth about forgetting the incident as These deeds must not be thought after these ways so, it will make us mad. Afterwards she gets the daggers that Macbeth had brought with him and smeared them with blood and then told Macbeth to change into a nightgown. At this point Lady Macbeth is in complete control and has tried to make Macbeth free of guilt even though he in fact did perform the deed.

Lady Macbeth is then able to exclaim in horror What! In our House! to the murder of Duncan but whilst in complete control, to draw away the suspicion from Macbeth. When however she finds out that Macbeth has killed the guards she faints Help me Hence but is this a another sign of an act to again draw away the suspicion from Macbeth or did she faint from shocked dismay. I believe she was shocked because I think that Lady Macbeth was surprised that she was able to get Macbeth to commit the murder of Duncan, but was shocked at how over one night and in fear, Macbeth could kill two more men in cold blood.

Lady Macbeth is still strongly in control as the play proceeds and is able to handle crises very well which is shown at the banquet incident where Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo, but Lady Macbeth is quick to lie for Macbeth to conceal the real ideas that are happening. As Macbeth progresses with his evil acts, however, Lady Macbeth starts to go mad which is almost like what her prophecy mentioned. She also hallucinates like her husband but this time about trying to cleanse her hands of the blood that will not wash off. Even though she may be a strong character greatly supporting her husband she is reduced and battered by the deeds and her conscience which she was able to rid from Macbeth, eventually drives her insane. She then kills herself unable to remove the damned spot. At his wife’s suicide Macbeth has already thrown away his conscience, so much so, that Macbeth commits even more evil acts afterwards without even admitting her to his conscience.

Over the course of the play Macbeth and Lady Macbeth greatly change with respect to their characters and their personalities. Although Macbeth was weak at first it was the strong Lady Macbeth who helped him through the first murder but in sacrifice to controlling Macbeth and his conscience she lost control of hers and in consequence turned insane and killed herself. Thus in the end it was worthy to call Macbeth and his wife a dead butcher and his fiend like queen but it must not be forgotten that at the beginning of the play Macbeth and his wife were ordinary nobles at the time.

The fact that the Jeffersonian Republicans were strict during the presidencies of James Madison and Jefferson is very true. One you knows about Thomas Jefferson knows that he was against the idea of having this single government that was starting up, and would also know that he believed that the Constitution was the only law of the land and it should be strictly interpreted. During the presidencies of Jefferson and James Madison, the constitution was something not to be fooled around with, it was very definite in there minds. They also didn’t want a single federal government “ruling” over America because they thought that’s what they were escaping to begin with. The ideas of federalists seemed too broad to them and they were totally opposed to them.

Document A is a fragment from a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote, in it he says “Our country is too big to have all its affairs directed by a single government.” Jefferson never believed in a single government in the first place, and he thought that not only is this the wrong course of action because it seemed that the federal government had a lot of power, but also he thought that America as a whole was to large to be run by it. He also said “The true theory of the Constitution is surely the wisest and best the states are independent as to everything within themselves.” This also shoots at how he thinks thought that what the constitution was based on is how we should learn it, and enforce the laws that it was directing. The states in would be somewhat independent from each other but would still be united as a country. As stated in document B, Jefferson also mentioned that he thought that the government had no real power to enforce anything; the power to enforce laws lied in the hands of the states independently. But Jefferson wasn’t the 100 percent strict on his views about the constitution, as shown in document G, he knew that the United States would have to show some progression with the years going by, meaning that eventual modifications of the Constitution were inevitable. He also mentioned, in the same document, that those changes would have to be of the most righteous principle’s, no unjust amendment would be ratified. The federalist ideas opposed those of Jefferson and Madison, as seen in document D, they even tried to make the republicans look like hypocrites, stating that the Madison administration was doing things that were unconstitutional in the name of the federal government that they opposed so much. But in the end these harsh remarks turned into negotiating bargains, as federalist and anti-federalists came to agreements.

Jeffersonian Republicans will always be known as strict interpreters to the Constitution, as they should be because they were. They didn’t believe in a single government ruling over an entire united nation, they thought the powers belonged to the states independently. They also were thought the Constitution was the Bible of America, and that it couldn’t be touched and everything inside was to be known to the last letter. Their thoughts and actions have molded the U.S.’s government to the way we know it today.
