This opposing motion is called friction and acts between two surfaces. To determine which material has opposed the motion of the trolley the most, the speed at which the trolley travels down the ramp when a material is used on the surface of the ramp will be measured.
In this experiment the independent variable is
Write my Essay on trolley investigation

The different materials used for the surface of the ramp.
The dependant variable of the experiment is
Due to the alteration of the material used on the surface of the ramp, the speed at which the trolley travels down the ramp will differentiate for each material used.
The control variables of the experiment are
The equipment used when the experiment is repeated.
The length of the different materials used to cover the surface of the ramp.
The height and angle of the ramp when the stool is used as the support.
The distance between the two sensors positioned along the ramp.
The distance allowed for the run up to the first sensor.
The other factors, which I could investigate that affect the friction of the trolley
The force pressing the surfaces together.
The aerodynamics of the trolley.
The weight of the trolley.
The height of the ramp.
The different grades of sand paper available on the market.
Background information
Friction is a force that acts between solid surfaces as they move over one another, and when objects move through a liquid or gas. The force of friction is caused by the roughness of two surfaces. If the surfaces are clean and dry, the force needed to overcome friction depends upon
The materials from which the surfaces are made.
The surface finish, i.e. rough, smooth or polished.
The force pressing the surfaces together.
Friction between contacting surfaces is often a disadvantage because it produces heat and wear. Friction can be reduced by the use of ball bearings and lubrication.
Water, snow and ice all reduce the grip between the ground and the object moving over the surface (e.g. a vehicle.) When there is water or ice on a road, the humps and hollows of the rough road surface are levelled out. The reduced friction causes cars and other vehicles to skid, as the tyres are unable to grip the ground. Reduced friction makes it more difficult to stop a car. The brakes stop the wheels from moving, but if there is not enough grip between the tyres and the road the car will slide forward.
When an object is moving there are two main forces at work, acting in opposite directions ' the force that is exerted, propelling the object forward, and friction. The friction creates a drag in the opposite direction to movement and so it tends to slow the object down. If there is no friction (as there is in space) then once an object moves it will continue to move forever.
Sources used in order to comprise the background information
GCSE Science Double Award, Physics ' K Foulds. Get stool and place ramp on the support of the stool (this support is cm in height.) At the bottom of the stool position a school bag.
. Plug the computer into the socket and open the data-logging programme. The data logging equipment will be used to measure the speed at which the trolley is travelling down the ramp.
. Position the two clamps so that they are 75cm away from each other. Ensure that before the first clamp, there is 0cm allowed for the run up' distance to the first sensor.
4. Plug each of the sensors into the appropriate sockets and clamp the sensors with the use of the clamps.
5. Attach a piece of black card vertically onto the trolley with the use of tape. This black card will be used so that the sensors do sense the trolley as it passes down the ramp. Adjust the height of the clamp so that the trolley does actually pass through the sensors.
6. Secure a piece of sandpaper (with tape) to the ramp so that it stretches across the distance of the two probes (75cm). If the piece of material isn't obtainable in that length then use the pieces of the same material to compensate for that length. When doing this make certain that there are no gaps between the pieces of material or there are no overlaps are evident.
7. Place the trolley at the top of the ramp before the run up distance to the first sensor and simply release the trolley. Before releasing the trolley make sure that the data logging system is set to ready'. Also check that the trolley's spring is facing downwards when each test is conducted.
8. Before each of the tests are carried out, a test run will be required to see whether the sensors situated along the ramp has sensed the trolley movement down the ramp. If not then this means that the height of the sensors above the ramp will have to be adjusted so that the trolley does pass through the sensors.
. Repeat the procedures mentioned in step 7 through to six times for each of the 6 different materials to obtain average results, which will then be plotted on a graph. Repeating the experiment six times for each material being tested will allow reliable results to be processed.
10. To test another material, replace the current material being tested with a different material, reciting steps 7 through to 10.
Diagram The diagram below shows the equipment once it has been set up.

Results
Speed of trolley (m/s)
Material Test 1 Test Test Test 4 Test 5 Test 6 Average
Sandpaper 0.88 0.67 0.6 0.71 0.66 0.76 0.7
Lino 0.8 0.0 0.8 0.76 0.4 0.78 0.84
Cling Film 0.74 0.87 0.88 0.1 1.01 0.5 0.8
Carpet 0.5 0.5 0.50 0.48 0.5 0.44 0.50
Wallpaper 0.0 0.1 0. 0.1 0.8 0.0 0.1
Control (wood) 0.87 1.01 1.0 1.01 0.4 1.00 0.8
(N.B. The average results were rounded off to two decimal places where appropriate. These average results were then included in the bar chart shown below.)

Conclusion
From the processed results I conclude that when carpet was used on the surface of the ramp, this caused the most friction between the trolley and the surface as the speed of the trolley was a lot lower compared to when the other materials were used on the ramp's surface.
Most of the results that I obtained appear to have a relatively large difference when the tests were repeated for each material. For example when the first test was carried out with sand paper the speed of trolley was 0.88 m/s in the second test that was conducted the result was 0.67 m/s there is a difference of 0.1 m/s! The only set of results that seem to be reliable are the wallpaper results, as the results for each of the tests seem to be around the same number and thus there isn't a large difference.
The results (shown in the results table) would therefore substantiate that my prediction was incorrect as I stated that if sand paper was used on the ramp's surface the speed of the trolley would be slower when compared to the other materials used on the surface of the ramp, when in fact it was carpet that produced the most friction out all of the materials due to the speed of the trolley being lower.
The reasons why carpet slowed down the speed of the trolley is because
The carpet that was provided for use in this experiment was considerably thicker than the other materials and due to this feature there was more grip between the wheels of the trolley and the surface of the ramp and this therefore slowed the trolley down, because the force of friction (acting in the opposite direct to which it is travelling) was greater than the force of exertion that propelled the trolley down the ramp.
If one refers to the bar chart one will discover that the bar showing the average speed of the trolley when carpet was applied to the ramp is lower down than the rest of the bars, indicating that the speed of the trolley was low compared to the speed of the trolley when the other materials were used, this would also prove that the results undermine the my prediction.
Evaluation
Overall this experiment went well, the members of my group and I encountered no problems while conducting this experiment.
Personally I think that the results gained after conducting this experiment are unreliable as I realised that there were a number of anomalies with the results that my group didn't repeat, as there wasn't a sufficient amount of time to achieve this. The reason why I believe that there are anomalies in the results is because when the tests were repeated for each material there appeared to be a relatively large difference between the results for each of the tests. One example of this is in the results was when the first test was conducted with sandpaper - the speed of the trolley was 0.88 m/s in the second test the result obtained was 0.67 m/s - a difference of 0.1 m/s. The only set of results that seem to be reliable are the wallpaper results, as the results for each of the tests seem to be around the same number and thus there isn't a large difference.
The reasons why I think that these anomalies in the results occurred is because'
The trolley may have been given a push down the ramp instead of being released down the ramp due to the force of gravity acting upon the trolley.
The distances and heights may have been measured inaccurately or may not have been the same when each of the different tests were carried out.
There may have been gaps and overlaps between the pieces of material that were used.
The sensors used to detect the trolleys movement may not have been triggered by the trolley when the tests were carried out.
There may have been indentions along the ramps surface.
Throughout the experiment I think that we were quite accurate to acquire accurate and reliable results because we ensured that the trolley wasn't pushed down the ramp and allowed the trolley to be released down the ramp with it's spring facing downwards; the distances and heights were measured exactly with precision with the use of the ruler and when the material wasn't long enough to stretch across the distance of the two sensors, we attempted to ensure that there were no gaps or overlaps between the pieces of material that were used to compensate for the full length. Despite abiding to these measures that I proposed to enforce in order to make the experiment as accurate as possible, anomalies in the results did still occur and this may have been because the members' of my group and I didn't enforce the measures for accuracy with skill.
I believe that there isn't enough evidence to support a firm conclusion, because we didn't repeat the anomalous results, as there wasn't enough time to do so. These anomalous results should have been repeated to gain a more reasonable result, and then for sure I will be certain that prediction is either right or wrong.
To improve the existing experiment to obtain more reliable and accurate results I would use materials that weren't available in separate pieces - I would ensure that the material was already cut to size with accuracy; make sure that the trolley isn't pushed down the ramp; make certain that there is enough time to recite any anomalous results; use a ramp that doesn't have any indentions ' I will use a ramp with a smooth surface and before conducting each and every test I will firstly make absolutely sure that the sensors do get triggered by the trolley's movement down the ramp.
To take the investigation further I would investigate each of the other factors that affect the friction of the trolley travelling down the ramp
The force pressing the surfaces together.
The aerodynamics of the trolley.
The weight of the trolley.
The height of the ramp.
The different grades of sand paper available on the market.

Please note that this sample paper on trolley investigation is for your review only. Rather than opposing the ideals of society, most feminists tended to manipulate them to their own advantage, in order to gain access to the public sphere and to influence society in alternative ways.
What the term feminist' means when applied to the Victorian period is debatable. As Caine comments, the word was not coined until the end of the nineteenth century and because of this it can be viewed as problematic when applied to the Victorians, because it is not a word that they would have used to describe themselves. Some historians use it to describe Victorians who were active within the women's movement, whilst others also apply it to a wide range of female activists and writers who had little to do with the women's movement (Caine, 1, p. 4). Levine also expresses the view that for this reason it is important to use the term with caution we need, therefore, to consider the possible range of meanings that words such as feminism take on in specific historical contexts'. It is important that we do not attribute current understandings of feminism onto the Victorians or use historical figures to make sense of current issues (Levine, 14, p. 11). Olive Banks, among others, has come to the conclusion that a close definition is not possible and that feminism is best described as any groups that have tried to change the position of women, or ideas about women' (Caine, 1, p. 5).
Historian's understanding and interpretation of Victorian feminism has developed and changed over the years. Where once it was understood as a belief in the need for equal rights between men and women, Caine comments there is now a widespread recognition of the importance Victorian feminists attached to establishing and maintaining sexual differences between men and women' (Caine, 1, p. ). This enabled females to assert their merits and virtues rather than inadequacies (Caine, 1, p. ). Only the most radical of feminists believed the doctrine of the women's sphere to be incorrect, viewing it as a coercive social construct which must be entirely set aside' (Helisinger, 1, p.0). For the most part, rather than a total rejection of these values, those who sought to improve women's rights worked with them. Levine comments that for many women committed to the fight for women's rights, the most effective weapon was not the total rejection of that ideology but a manipulation of its fundamental values' (Levine, 14, p. 1).
Ethical values in early Victorian Britain can be seen to have stemmed directly from the teaching of the church, through which the notion of women's submission to men had become religious law (Levine, 14, p. 11). The religious revival of the early years of the nineteenth century meant that women's role as the bearers of religious and moral values was clarified and strengthened' (Levine, 14, p. 1). This was both empowering and restrictive for women. This role placed women in the position of moral guardians within the British domestic ideology of separate spheres, thus idealising a situation that had been created by industrial capitalism. The ideology of the separate spheres, the private and the public, was not actually obtainable for many families; in particular for the working classes who could not afford the luxury of women remaining at home. However it still had a great influence over people's values.

Help with essay on Victorian Studies: Politics & Society:Why do early to mid-nineteenth century feminists concentrate on law, education and work rather than political rights?

Feminists in the early to mid-nineteenth century tended to focus on issues of law, education and work rather than on their political rights in accordance with the values of separate spheres. This more gradual infiltration into the masculine public sphere finally allowed women to gain more legal and political rights later in the century once they had fought and won a number of battles which made them more equal to men in other ways - e.g. through development of women's education. The prominent ideology of women as moral guardians gave women the ideal argument for entering the public sphere - After all, if women's purity made them natural custodians of religious teachings and values, then their effect in public life could only be uplifting'. (Levine, 14, p.1). This sentiment of moral superiority became the leading force of many women's campaigns in this period (Levine, 14, p. 1). Tyrell comments on the developing perception of women as a group with moral authority - for a group or league to have the support of womanhood' carried positive connotations of the symbolic values of Victorian society. There were definitely benefits for a pressure group that was identified as a lady's cause. (Tyrell, 188, p. 15).
Women's politics cannot be assessed in the same way as male political campaigning, as because as they were denied access to existing channels of political influence women sought involvement in politics in alternative ways (Levine, 14, p. 17). Women's type of involvement in political issues often varied according to their class. Many middle class women became involved in and supported a number of causes by joining ladies committees during the first half of the nineteenth century, such as the anti-Corn Law League, the Anti-slavery League, and temperance societies and so on. Perkin comments that religious belief gave many middle class women the courage to tackle social evils, and through this they gained wide experience and leadership skills. Some women spent their entire lives promoting social reform under the guise of philanthropy (Perkin, 18, p. 05). Levine comments that the majority of nineteenth century feminists came from well-assured middle class backgrounds, this was probably because they had more time to spare for causes than working class women who were often more distanced because of the constant worry of economic uncertainty. This class divide has caused many historians to separate Victorian feminism into two strands, bourgeois feminism and social feminism (Levine, 14, p.16).
Many working class women were however involved in a number of political movements, such as the Peterloo Massacre, debates over the New Poor Law 184, and also the Chartist's movement during the 180s and 1840s. They were also able to exercise consumer power by refusing to patronise shops that did not support the Chartist movement (Rendall, 15 p. 8). Many working class women also agitated on behalf of their male relations supporting their fight for the vote, for example, the Blackburn Female Reform Society, founded in 181, had this aim (Rendall, 185, pp. 5-6). It was notable however that working women's level of political involvement declined after the 1840s. Landed and upper middle class women had more direct political power - they sometimes canvassed for members of their family standing for election, and could also exercise a certain amount of political rights by virtue of their situation and family connections (Rendall, 185, p. ). Perkin comments on upper class women's involvement in politics Although women did not sit in parliament, they expected to exert influence over their friends who did, and gain patronage for their relatives, friends and proteges' (Perkin, 1, p. 0).
However, as Harman comments, despite women's involvement with political and moral issues, there were many barriers against women physically attending public meetings, which created further problems with their involvement in public issues. Harman gives the World Anti-slavery Convention, (London 1840) as an example. Women visiting from America were made to sit in a separate gallery at this event, and were excluded from the proceedings, demonstrating the high-level of opposition to women's presence at such events. Socially there were all sorts of problems with women physically appearing in public spaces, especially if it would mean that they would be mixing with men. There were fears that a woman would become tainted if she was to enter the public sphere Female participation in public life, and the female public appearance itself would compromise a women's virtue' (Harman, 18 p. 6). This was not only a subject of male concern, the writings of women such as Sarah Stickney Ellis and Sarah Lewis during the middle of the century echoed these worries.
These issues of women's involvement in the public sphere were reflected in the literature of the period. For example, the Bronte sister's novels often portrayed women as present, yet screened off from significant public experiences (Harman, 18, p.). Novelists such as Gaskell dealt with the subject of the public sphere in a more positive way than Ellis and Lewis. As Harman demonstrates, in her novel North and South (1854), Gaskell portrays her character Margaret Hale's active involvement in local politics, and demonstrates how because of this her character becomes vulnerable to misconstruction and misunderstanding. However, ultimately Gaskell portrays her loss of purity as a positive experience, suggesting an alternative to the women's mission advocated by Lewis (Harman, 18, p. 17).
The education of females was a subject that aroused much attention and debate during the nineteenth century. Rendall comments that at the beginning of the century the role of the mother as educator of children was increasingly emphasised as important (Rendall, 185, p. 10). This naturally led to debates over whether enough attention was devoted to the education of the mother in order that she was able to educate her children properly. Rendall observes that the issues surrounding this subject were also connected to the advancement of women - a better education would enable a woman to hold a more equal place in society - the argument for the potential equality of women, given educational opportunity, could arise from a concern from the education of mother (Rendall, 185, p. 116).
Again, as before where the idealisation of women as moral guardians had lead some to question why women shouldn't take part in the public sphere, the debate over the education of mothers led people began to question the standard of education women should have in order to be able to educate their children. This gradually enabled women to gain access to better educational opportunities, and to slowly assimilate themselves into the public sphere and strengthen their position in society. Rendall quotes Mary Leman Grimstone in her article Female Education (New Moral World', February 185) there arose a a new moral courage among women, an assertion of their equal moral status and equal intelligence' (Rendall, 185, p. 117).
From the 180s onwards attention this interest in the education of the educator was also directed towards the training of governesses, which was often found to be lacking, and the debates opened out to address the issue of secondary and even higher education for women (Rendall, 185, pp. 14-5). By the 180s and 1840s the case for the education of mother was widely supported in the UK, US and France. By this time there was also a shift in the argument - the role of the mother was still central to the debate, but the need for women to be able to support themselves had also become an issue. There were many women who did not have fathers or husbands to support them, and for whom there were few options of how to earn money. Wages were also very poor in many cases, even in factories where women were relatively well paid in comparison to other areas, they would only earn between two thirds to a half of what men earnt (Perkin, 1, p. 176). It was a natural progression of the debate when it came to be suggested that women trained as teachers (Rendall, 185, p.15). This resulted in a number of schools being founded in order to train middle class girls for this profession.
In the same way that educational opportunities for females had begun to change for women by the mid-nineteenth century, so had their legal status. Ironically, although women were idolised as the moral guardians of society, they had little (or if they were married, no) political rights at the beginning of the nineteenth century (Harman, 18, p. ). From the late 180s onwards this slowly began to change, as the issue of custody of children was gradually revised, giving mothers more rights over their children (Holcombe, 18 pp. 5-44), and eventually the Women's Property Act was introduced. Holcombe states that this was the most important of legal reforms won by feminists in the nineteenth century, as it removed the severe legal disabilities that married women faced. In the history of English law property and personal status was closely related, so this act was particularly significant for the advancement of women's position in society. However, the vote was still a long way off for women. In the early years of the nineteenth century, when very few males had the vote and women were seen as unequal to men in so many ways, any attempts to lobby for female suffrage were not taken seriously. The issue was raised repeatedly throughout the early years of the nineteenth century. The 18 Act clearly stimulated women's interest in the issue, and there were repeated calls for women to be franchised. However, this issue was not taken seriously until later in the nineteenth century, and even then it was still a long time until all women all women received suffrage in 18.
Victorian feminists were also concerned with the issues surrounding women and work. As early as 1804 a Ladies Committees was formed with the objective of promoting the education and employment of working women' (Perkin, 1, p. 176). Women were paid considerably less than men despite doing the same work. For married working class women this was particularly hard, many such women worked out of necessity to supplement the family income, and this made them more likely to accept wages that were far from fair. Because of the large numbers of women looking for work employers were able to keep lowering wages, and often extended working hours. This in turn had a very negative impact on single women who often could not survive on this money. Many women turned to prostitution, at least occasionally to make ends meet. In 185 Harriet Martineau argued for the end of artificial depreciation' of women's work and the assumption that women were dependent on male relatives. Liberal feminists of the 1850s answer to the problem was for better education for women and in new kinds of occupations, however this was still inline with the feminine ideals of the time, and the work had to be perceived as natural' for women (Rendall, 185, pp. 184-5).
Working conditions for many workers were also very bad, and a number of women's committees were committed to lobbying for reform, There was a significant amount of government intervention in this area, and a number of acts were passed, for example, the 184 Mines and Colleries Act, which attempted to protect the working woman (this one excluded women from working underground). However, although many people saw this as progress, not all working class women favoured acts such as these as they were effectively excluded them from better paid work. Other acts such as the Factory Acts also gradually reduced the working hours particularly of women, young people and children improving working conditions.
In conclusion, it can be seen that feminists in the first half of the nineteenth century tended to concentrate on issues of law, education and work rather than engage in struggles for their own political rights. This is not to say though that Victorian women were not involved in the political world, their indirect influence seems to have been very great. Perkin comments that All the great moral and social changes of the nineteenth century were pioneered by private activity and benevolence. Both unmarried and married women gave their time and energies to a vast number of associations, societies, leagues, guilds and alliances' (Perkin, 1, p. 17). The dominant domestic ideology of separate spheres can be seen to have been used by women to advance their position rather than to restrict their cause, and was used to bring issues out into the political arena (Perkin, 1, p. 17). Lacey describes the 1850s as a turning point for women, and she appears to be correct (Lacey, 186, p.1). By the 1850s it can be seen that a strong women's movement was emerging, which would go on later to take on the fight for married women's rights, custody issues, higher education and entrance into the professions for women, and eventually to win the fight for female suffrage (Perkins, 1, p. 1).
Bibliography
Caine, B. The world we live in today contrasts greatly with that ten years ago. This aftermath has remolded our society's economy, employment, entertainment, i.e.'and of utmost importance, gender roles. Subsequent to the war, men's role in society has suffered little effect. It is that of women, which displays a significant and noticeable alteration. Woman's sexuality, status in the workplace and role in the family and marriage has all been affected. The standard proper roles within these must be followed. The entire female population must shift its role toward one of motherhood and domesticity, just as a chameleon adapts to its surroundings. As women, a higher degree of responsibility and vocation lay on your backs.

Desire for individual freedom is evident of females today. Signs show a more reckless generation of females, full of truthfulness, fast living, and sexual behavior. Alyse Gregory once stated, 'But for the first time'girls broke through those invisible chains of custom and asserted their right to a nonchalant, self-sustaining life of their own with a cigarette after every meal and a lover in the evening to wander about with'' The 'new woman' of today displays her sexy side to the public in an innocent manner. Moreover to femininity display, these women engage in premarital sex; however, morals have not dropped within these women despite first impressions and many peoples' beliefs. I understand these new orthodox attributes to be appropriate and embrace backing of good judgment. We have lost many brave and patriotic men through the hardships of fighting. Subsequently, this reduction of the male population has caused fewer women to 'save' their selves for that perfect man. Additional responsibility is consequent of sexual activity and marriage, yet, greatly outweighs the less promising idea of becoming a lonely widow. Many of the females I look upon this instance will become wives and mothers sooner than desired and see this responsibility first hand. Although, increased work and stress and a decline in leisure money and time will result, the family is mandatory, for our nation's future lies in your hands as mothers. Your offspring make and fuel the economy.
As for married couples, with or without children, the woman has the responsibility and job as housekeeper. Women's job in society today belongs nowhere except in the home. Women who fight the system of traditional gender roles in the workforce work to hard only to fall short of a man's earnings. Alice Rogers recently published data of Week's Earnings of Males and of Females in Factories provides sufficient evidence that a woman's work in the factory can only expect to earn slightly over half of what a man would receive. Besides, with most marriages resulting in children and families, who shall take care of the children? Shall you neglect them or just deplete your hard earned money on a babysitter? No, it is your job to take care of the children. God intentionally gave the male stronger attributes, making him designed to do the dirty work of this machine age. As your husband works, you should take care of the home dust, do laundry, sweep, sew, mend, wash dishes and prepare meals for the family. Of utmost importance, do not let being your own boss and knowing that you will not be fired result in laziness. Consider these attributes a privilege; nonetheless, remember that housekeeping is your job and is needed by the family.

Lastly, the females must take care of our nations' men. Feed and take sufficient care of your husband when he is home from work. If he works hard for the income that pays for the families' comfort and living, match his effort throughout the tasks of the home manage the money, pay the bills and take care of your husband and the children. Do not be foolish and waste your husbands' money on material items for yourself. As a wife, you should do anything possible to save his money; his money is what fuels the whole family. Make your husband feel loved and at ease so that he can always work top notch and stress free, doing your part to help your husband earn a promotion one day. In accord, Ernest and Gladys H. Groves states 'Of course the wife who helps her husband on to success makes the home life restful and refreshing.' Your hard work will be noticed through time, for hard work early leads to an easier life when you are older. Make his day seem worthwhile and your marital and sexual relationships will be greatly enhanced from your efforts.

Help with essay on Fitting Into Society

So ladies, when your new sexy approach rewards you with a good man, do not lose him. Take his hand in marriage and provide him with your care in the home. If both husband and wife convey hard work, overall satisfaction and relaxation at the end of the day and throughout your lives will be fulfilled. Changes in society will indefinitely occur; yet, domesticity and motherhood are the roles placed on women of today.

Please note that this sample paper on Fitting Into Society is for your review only. The existence of numerous laws not only provides security and civilization for the society and avoids anarchy, but it also offers certain individual rights and protects the privilege of the citizens. It is true that'There are two types of laws just and unjust. In The Republic, Plato attempts to demonstrate through the character and discourse of Socrates that justice is better than justice is the good which men must strive for, regardless of whether they could be unjust and still be rewarded.why Hobbes believes that the person who believes breaking a covenant could be to one's benefit is a fool, we must understand his definition of justice. 'Justice is the constant will of giving to every man his own.' Meaning that justice is the established idea that you get what you deserve. Each person has their own opinion on what they believe the word 'Justice' symbolizes and means particularly to them. Franz Kafka may not have the same interpretation or outlook on what we see as justice or in this case injustice in his novels, which is difficult for a reader to interpret by just reading.
Would you like a twin brother or sister? I found persons with whom I could identify like Michael Collins but noone whom I would strive to be like. Politicans in Ireland are frequently corrupt and strive to present that superficial image so pivotal to American politics.
The point Im about to make is that dispite the fact that one knows that a certain individual is most probably fake and possibly even breaks major moral rules for an individual, they will still allow concessions to that individual because they embody part the person themselves.
In a sense, the person in providing a concession for their own mental shortcoming.
Custom Essays on Idols: Do we honour the dead or do we honour our lies?

My first ever Idol was Bruce Lee. Truly he was one of the greatest martial artists that ever lived and many of the principles by which he lived his life, I adapted myself and have found have been major keys to success. My friends and I trained like maniacs at Kung Fu and always wanted to be the best there was. We were incredibly dedicated to our art, we were pioneers till the age of 1...bearing in mind Im Irish, and my peers began drinking at 1 and the vast majority drank(abused) regularily by the age of 16. Bruce Lee is an individual whom people throughout the world of all different walks of life identify with.
Bruce Lee died of a cerebral odema, though rumours persisted of murder throughout Hong Kong for various reasons ... some plausible, some ridiculous, all inexorably consuming.
Then Tupac Shakur was one of my next idols, surprising because not only do I live in a tactitly tolerant society, but I also hated rap music as a youngster. Tupac had something similar to Bruce Lee, a level of conviction, a level of confidence. His music is haunting and has introduced me to a world I never knew existed - I dont mean South Central Los Angeles....to be honest, I dont particularily care about South Central LA, and would also dispute the fact that it DOES exist!
Nope, the world Im taking about is one entirley different.
Although I consider myself to be relativley articulate, I find it difficult to put into words just exactly what that world is. Perhaps its emotion, which is why it is difficult to pinpoint.
Tupac Shakur was gunned down in a drive-by shooting in 16 in Las Vegas. Similar to Bruce Lee, many intensley interesting rumours persist about his death and the conjecture by fans rivals even the imaginative genius of Tupac himself!
Next and I suppose finally was Mike Mentzer. Perhaps the greatest bodybuilder who ever lived in my opinion, though he never won an Overall Mr.Olympia title. He won the heavyweight 17 Mr.Olympia, but lost overall to Frank Zane who was the lightweight victor.
The following year he resigned from bodybuilding in disgust at an apparent fix, in which Mr.Arnold Schwarzenegger returned after a six year break from bodybuilding to reclaim his 7th Mr.Olypia in what is probably one of THE most controversial sporting events in the history of Planet Earth.
Mike Menzter died in 001
What do all these idols have in common?
All were underdogs, who were never afraid to oppose public opinion, in fact, they succeeded by their opposition.
All used drugs(anabolic steroids) and some form of stimulant(amphetimines) which in my culture would be strictly frowned upon.
All were only realised for their full potential, AFTER they had expired, and were then realised to be perhaps the greatest in their field among their peers and fans.
Well, it doesnt matter I could go on.
But the thing I must point out is that as different as these these individuals are from race, culture, occupation etc. I have managed to idenitify something within my own consciousness which allows me to identify with them.
Many people would readily accept that after death, the man dies and the legend is born, however, perhaps it is not the man whom one ever identified with, they simply facilitated a method for the individual to expand their own perceptions and beliefs.
To sum up, the most succesful president in the history of the United States is commonly regarded as Ronald Regan(note I wrote president not politican. They are ENTIRLEY different things. LOL!).
And Ronald Regans profession before presidency was acting.
And what is acting but perfecting malleability.
Is your mind malleable?

Please note that this sample paper on Idols: Do we honour the dead or do we honour our lies? is for your review only. I had returned from a football recruiting trip to'you wont believe this'Northwestern, during the weekend of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and played a spectacular(ly lucky) game which made me a High School All-American (sorry; it matters).
A legend named Gayle Sayers (who had played high school football in Omaha--and knocked me out cold on the very first play of my career ) would be playing his final season at KU the next year, and they were scouring the nation for a hotshot to replace him (in the event, an impossible task he was one of the greatest athletes in American history--and author of a book and documovie [Brians Song] about the fatal cancer of a heroic teammate).
Buy custom Interview at Rockville Center (after "Interview at Weehauken": fatal duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr) term paper

Freshmen couldnt play on varsity teams in those days, which meant that everybody in Kansas already knew that they didnt have TheNextGreatOne in that years crop. So the hunt was on for a high school running back who--well, the invitation that accompanied the plane ticket the idiots delivered to me shamelessly (and embarrassingly) plagiarized the most famous paragraph in the history of American sports reporting .1
In those benighted times big-time football schools provided hostesses to escort recruiting targets (not Northwestern, you'll be happy to hear), and mine turned out to be the local SororitySuperStar, Linda Paradise, brightshininglight of the Pi Phi Pledge Class. The whole house was in on her spectacular entrance down a spiral staircase, which of course I assumed was aimed at my exalted presence.

Not it turned out that shed been humiliated recently by the quondam heir to the Sayers mantle (you may not believe this either--when I remembered it I couldn't--but I checked and its true it was some kid from New Jersey, for Gods sake) and I, as a Nebraska SS, was to be her revenge (she was from Omaha, and wed circled each other for years).
Jumping to curfew time (did NW still have that for women when you were there?), the agenda finally unfolded I was to be the, uh, instrument for a (semi-)public demo contrary to her Pure-As-The-Driven-Snow image, she did give head, as we used to say, and as well as--no, better than--her AlphaPussy-Pledge Rival and successor with Jersey-Joe-something-or-other---and All Would Be Made Clear. To ALL.
If you're still reading this, I'm sure you wonder what anything so ridiculous has to do with you, or anything that matters (or should matter) to anyone worth knowing, let alone worth caring for. I guarantee that it has everything to do with both of us; what happened that night has colored everything I ever do with/about/to SexMonsters--the Third Gender4'I met after you.

In any event, we were in a convertible provided by the team; one of her sisters had saved a parking spot strategically located between the parking lot and the freshmen womens dorm, and she became extremely friendly. Are we secure in this day of age? For the past 15 years, Iraq, has been a big problem for many nations. Iraq being a strong supplier of the world's oil resources, has had a leader who gives fear to many nations. Saddam Hussein is the Iraqi leader who in the past has tried to spread his domination and beliefs in many countries. In the past the U.S has slowed it down and has kept his force on hold. But are we still safe? Recently the U.S has had word that nuclear force has reached the hands and mind of Saddam Hussein. Many other factors has our nation thinking of whether or not war is an option to end all fears. Should we go to War with Iraq? There are many different views of what the U.S should do in this situation and I will give my take on it.
Saddam Hussein and his regime has been a strong totalartarian government for quite some time now. Since
Custom writing service can write essays on war on iraq

Many people have different opinions on the war with Iraq. I took a survey around school and with people I knew to see what they thought on this whole topic. There were 50 people I polled and the results were 6 of those people said we should while 0 said we should not and the other 4 said they did not care. Most people did not really know what was going on with this issue. It is sad for these people to vote on what they don't even know about and even worse that some don't care. It seems that the majority of college students do not care about this matter but are opiniated just by guessing.
There are many other Americans where this topic is of much importance.
I believe we should go to war with Iraq to stop future catastrophe's. I Help with essay on my journey to an associates degree

often ask myself how can I be happier, healthier or wiser. I am using my goal of achieving an associates degree in business administration as a tool for creating a successful better life. It has been a very since I have studied and I want to improve the way I currently study. I have determined that I am a bottom up learner in hope that this knowledge will provide me with the skills needed to study effectively. Knowing this is one step towards achievement.
Bottom up learners prefer to have the information in a logical manner,
building up from the fundamentals, foundation, and basics and then
finishing with the big picture. Understanding the way I learn new things, my
individual learning style, will help me to choose learning activities that
ensure I learn effectively. This does not mean that I cannot learn from
methods that are not specifically suited to my style - in fact it can be good to
choose things outside my normal style occasionally, to create a balance and
help to improve my learning skills. I am a practical thinker. I base my decisions on practicality, details, and controlled data. I consider my strengths to be planning, supervising, administrating, and organizing. A considerable weakness I posses would be implementing ideas. I have no imagination and lack creativity. This is one of my main objectives for improvement in this course. After all, who wants to be thought of as dull and boring?
My biggest challenge has been adjusting to the distance-learning program. Order your Enlightened Absolutism paper at affordable prices custom writing service!
Enlightened Absolutism can be viewed as a streamed lined style of monarchical government that relies on a single branch of governmental decision making, which is founded on sound logical reason.

Frederick the Great, who ruled the eastern German state of Prussia from 1740-1786, was a catalyst for this new style of government.

The enlightened absolutists such as Frederick justified their absolute authority by proclaiming themselves servants of the state or the people. Frederick believed that he had a special tie or social contract' with the people he ruled. 'The citizens only granted pre-eminence to one of their fellows in return for serves which they expected from him'. Frederick believed in this partnership and believed it was his duty to protect the interest of his public and in doing so took a direct responsibility for every decision made regarding it. In serving the people Frederick was an advocate for social reform, which comprised of an important component of enlightened absolutism. By actively pursuing reform Frederick believed government would be able to stamp out unequal treatment before the law and preserve rights and property. Frederick eliminated the use of torture in judicial proceedings and judicial punishments, abandoned capital punishment and greatly reduced corruption in the judicial system. He passed a series of measures to protect religious minorities and abolished the serf system, which tied tenant farmers to certain properties for life.

Aside from social reform, Frederick believed that a ruler (especially of a small State) should be ever so inclined to rule his people directly, by assuming complete control over political decision-making. He disliked the approach France took in its political make-up, entrusting the political decisions to appointed ministers, who in turn were responsible for the state's affairs in finance, war, marine and foreign affairs. Frederick believed delegating responsibility furthers to complicate the decision making process. 'They must all be coordinated simultaneously, and their joint effect, if operated according to sound rules of policy will bring the greatest benefit to States '. Individual ministers become self-serving, interested only in matters, which benefit them, and promoting their own careers, thus making it increasingly more difficult to come to an agreement on matters, which affect the state.
According to Frederick, all actions taken must be well reasoned, and all financial, political and military matters must flow towards one goal, which is the strengthening of the state and the furthering of its power, and for Frederick this means action must come from a single authority. In France and Britain internal and foreign affairs were debated and argued amongst ministers, which Frederick contended as being the direct consequence of separating the affairs of government. This is in part why Frederick argued in favour of enlightened absolutism, it streamlines the political decision making process. Furthermore, it eliminates self-serving corrupt individuals and places the interest of the people back in the hands of its rightful owner, that being the ruler.

Buy custom Enlightened Absolutism term paper

This leads itself into Frederick final account on enlightened absolutism. As stated Frederick believed that an absolute monarch for smaller States was essential for their survival. 'For larger kingdoms advance together with their abuses and maintain themselves by their weight and their intrinsic strength, while small states are quickly crushed unless they are active vigorous and dynamic'. Enlightened absolutism offers fluidity in decisions and actions that must be taken in both internal and foreign affairs, and helps to protect the state against selfishness and jealousness of delegated authority.
Is it possible for Frederick to be both a philosophe and an absolute monarch? There is no question that Prussia under the leadership of Frederick the Great was governed by an absolute monarch. Frederick was in complete control of every political move and action under his state and did so as the sole power. Can a ruler of an absolute monarch also be a member of the philosophes, which included journalists, activists, academics, and intellectuals who were seeking to change the world as well as understand it? Most of the philosophes believed in monarchical government. In general they had a utilitarian approach for society. They were by and larger concerned with the happiness and well being of the people. They fought against tyranny, advocated social reform, and were activist of toleration and justice for all. They were also opposed to established forms of institutions, especially the church. As already stated, Frederick was a champion of social reform, and was consistent with the values and principles proposed by the philosophes. One is led to believe that Gibbon would argue that Frederick is and can be a philosophe and an absolute monarch. In doing so he would refer to the example of the Roman Empire, in his book The decline and fall of the Roman Empire' Gibbon states that ' The vest extent of the Roman Empire was governed by absolute power, under the gaudiness of virtue and wisdom. The armies were restrained by the firm but gentle hands of fours successive emperirors, whose characters and authority, commanded involuntary respect. The forms of the civil administration were carefully preserved by, Nerva, Trajan, and the Atoninus, who delighted in the image of liberty, and were pleased with considering themselves as the accountable ministers of the laws.'
Under the right circumstances one is led to believe that in theory it would be possible for Frederick to be both a philosophe and an absolute monarch, and this would seem to be true of Frederick given the accounts of his actions. What must be taken into consideration are Frederick's motives. Is he acting out of humanitarian concern or political ambition and state security? Larger and more powerful enemies namely France and Russia surrounded Prussia during his rule; therefore it was paramount to maintain social order and stability. Frederick needed a strong industry and economy, as well as support of the people to maintain a large enough army to defend its boarders.

Please note that this sample paper on Enlightened Absolutism is for your review only. There are hospitals providing free medical service for the poor. The viharas and temples are majestic. People are free to choose their occupations. There are no restrictions on the movement of the people. Government officials and soldiers are paid their salaries regularly. People are not addicted to drinks. They shun violence. The administration provided by the Gupta rulers is fair and just. (John Marshall,16)

Archaeological excavations have brought to light the remains of a highly developed urban civilization in ancient India that stretched across approximately 150 kilometers, extending from the area on the upper Sutlaj in contemporary Punjab to Lothal in Gujarat. Historians are of the view that this civilization flourished in the third millennium before the birth of Christ.

It is known by the name of the two of its great cities Harappa and Mohenjodaro situated on the left and the right bank respectively of the river Ravi in Punjab. The two cities were built on a similar plan houses constructed with standard burnt bricks arranged in squares, along roads intersecting at right angles. The houses varied in size but were all based on the same plan a small courtyard surrounded by rooms with entrances in side alleys, often multistoried with no windows opening out to the street. The houses had bathrooms and the drains flowing out were connected to covered sewers with soak-pits. This unique sewage system is amongst the most impressive achievements of the Indus people and sets them apart from all other ancient civilizations.

“The earliest literary source that sheds light on Indias past is the Rig Veda. It is difficult to date this work with any accuracy on the basis of tradition and ambiguous astronomical information contained in the hymns. It is most likely that Rig Veda was composed between 1,500 B.C. and 1,000 B.C.” (H.D.Sankalia, 174)

Write my Essay on India's Classic Age

The most famous of the Mauryas is Ashoka the Great (reign 7 - B.C.). He extended the boundaries of his empire considerably stretching from Kashmir and Peshawar in the North and Northwest to Mysore in the South and Orissa in the East but his fame rests not so much on military conquests as on his celebrated renunciation of war. After witnessing the carnage at the battle field of Kalinga (6 B.C.) in Orissa, Ashoka resolved to dedicate himself to Dhamma or righteousness.

It was Chandra Gupta II (reign 80 - 41 A.D.) Samudra Guptas successor who finally defeated the Sakas and re-established a strong central authority. His reign registered the high watermark in Indian culture. His accomplishments in war and peace were glorious enough for him to claim the title Vikramaditya the resplendent, great, and good king of legends. Fa-hien, a Chinese traveler who was in India from to 414 A.D. has left an interesting account of contemporary India. This age of peace and prosperity witnessed an unprecedented flowering of art, literature and the sciences.

The number of Dravidisms in all aspects of the language including phonology increased in the post-Rigvedic era.

The large majority appear first in the classical language, but in its early stage, being first recorded in Panini, Patanjali, Mahabharata, Srautasutra, etc. The majority appear also in Pali, which is important for dating since these canonical texts take us back to a period from 500-00 B.C.

Indian is an ancient civilization and an inheritor to a rich and diverse cultural tradition. The Fairs and Festivals celebrated across the length and breadth of the land present a fascinating pageant and showcase the resplendence of its arts and crafts tradition. Some festivals are of religious nature, others are linked with the lives of the people, change of seasons and harvesting. Kids were taught by a guru (a teacher). Even chief’s sons had to obey the guru. All students followed a rigorous course of studies which were imparted orally. Writing was done on bark and leaves, and hence was perishable, so we have very few rock edicts to tell us what they studied or what they wrote.

This ancient civilization must have had marvelous craftsmen, skilled in pottery, weaving, and metal working. The pottery that has been found is of very high quality, with unusually beautiful designs. Several small figures of animals, such as monkeys, have been found. These small figures could be objects of art or toys. There are also small statues of what they think are female gods. So far, scientists have found no large statues. They have found bowls made of bronze and silver, and many beads and ornaments. The metals used to make these things are not found in the Indus Valley. So, either the people who lived in this ancient civilization had to import all of these items from some other place, or more probably, had to import the metals they used to make these beautiful things from somewhere else.

John Marshall, Annual Report of the Archaeological Survey of India 1-4, Calcutta, 16, p. 47.

H.D.Sankalia, Prehistory and Protohistory of India and Pakistan nd ed., Poona, 174, pp. 84-85.

Please note that this sample paper on India's Classic Age is for your review only. Which brings me to outline the topic RACIAL PROFILING and how it coincides with the Amadou Diallo case. Then I will proceed onto the Abner Louima case, and give some background information on this topic.
Starting in March 00 Governor Jim McGreevey signed a bill into law that stated that if a law enforcement officer is found to have committed racial profiling they might face a 5-year imprisonment charge and $15,000 fine. However, this person has to be found committing this act twice for it to considered racially motivated. Also, if there is bodily harm found on the victim the charges to the officers might exceed to 10 years imprisonment.

Order College Papers on racial profiling, amadou diallo, and abner louima

Racial Profiling as defined by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) is any police-initiated action that relies on the race, ethnicity or national origins of an individual rather than the behavior of an individual or information that leads the police to a particular individual who has been identified as being, or having been engaged in criminal activity.
Which brings me to the Amadou Diallo case where a -year-old West African immigrant was killed by a vague description. This incident takes place when four plain-clothes undercover policemen received information over the radio that they were looking for a rapist in the area. While looking for this rapist they saw Diallo at his house and figured he could have been the rapist and told him to stop moving and put his hands in the air. Diallo then reached for his wallet to show the officers that he was not the rapist but that's when the tragedy happened. 41 bullets were fired at Diallo but only 1 actually entered his body.
Now this incident is more than likely to happen again, because like usual the police officers found a way to beat the system and they were acquitted of all charges and Diallo's memory is known as a tragic ERROR!
Abner Louima a Haitian immigrant was arrested at a Haitian nightclub, but on his way to the 70th precinct he was beaten with a radio up side his head, then when he arrived at the precinct officer Justin Volpe said that Louima had punched him and he would take over. Volpe and another officer took Louima into the precinct bathroom and in there pushed a plunger 5 to 6 inches up Louima's rectum which caused his intestine to rip and other damages to his stomach area. Volpe also stuck the plunger in Louima's mouth, which damage most of his teeth.
They then placed Louima in a holding cell for three hours while he was bleeding then took him to Coney Island's hospital where they gave a fake report of what happened. They reported that Louima's condition was caused by homosexual intercourse. Moreover, Louima told a nurse at the hospital that this wasn't true and she called Internal Affairs which at first they seemed reluctant to help, but 48 hours later they finally went to investigate the incident.
Volpe later pled guilty and is currently serving a 0-year sentence. The jury also found Officer Charles Schwarz guilty of assisting in the assault and four other officers guilty of lying to authorities about the incident.
Under the terms of the settlement Louima will receive $8.75 million, with $7.15 million being paid by the City of New York and $1.65 million being paid by the Patrolmens Benevolent Association (PBA). Louimas original claim sought $155 million. Louimas attorney claimed that the city erected a blue wall of silence and lies to obstruct justice.
In closing, I leave with a quote that Bruce Springsteen sung in one of his songs titled 'AMERICAN SKIN (41 SHOTS)'. Promise me if an officer stops you'll always be polite, never run away and promise mama you'll keep your hand in sight, you can get killed just for living in your American skin.

Please note that this sample paper on racial profiling, amadou diallo, and abner louima is for your review only. A Board of Governors represent 184 member countries views and interests. The institutions that comprise the World Bank Group are International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), International Development Association (IDA), International finance corporation (IFC), Multilateral investment guarantee agency (MIGA) and International center for settlement of investment disputes (ICSID). They are loosely affiliated and vary in numbers. IBRD has 184 members, IDA has 16, the IFC has 175, MIGA has 158 and ICSID has 14.

Similar to the World Bank is the International Monetary Fund. There aim is solve economic quandaries whist promoting their own monetarist values. The bank provides the opportunity to correct inconsistencies or debts in a countries’ balance of payments without hindering national or international prosperity. Other aims include the promotion and maintenance of high-level employment to facilitate the expansion growth of international trade and the elimination of foreign exchange restrictions which can arguably hamper the growth of world trade. The IMF however hasn’t been entirely successful or benevolent. George Shultz, a secretary of state under President Ronald Reagan said, “The IMF is ineffective, unnecessary, and obsolete.”

The World Bank and the IMF are the worlds largest public lenders. Whilst the Bank manages a total of $00 billion, the Fund supplies member governments with money to overcome short-term credit difficulties. The Bank and the Fund are also openly and commonly referred to as the worlds biggest ‘loan sharks.’ When the Bank and the Fund lend money to debtor countries, the money comes with a flipside. These strings come in the form of policies called structural adjustment policies. These policies require debtor governments to open their economies to penetration by foreign corporations, with direct effect to the countrys workers and environment.

When providing financial support to a member country, the IMF makes sure that the member is pursuing policies that will balance payment problems. The commitment that members make to implement such economic restoration in return for the IMFs support is known as conditionality. This commitment ensures that members are able to repay the IMF in a timely manner allowing the IMFs limited funds to be available to other members as well. There are two levels of financial support or conditionality that the IMF gives. Low conditionality involves a country establishing that it has a need to balance payments and a declaration that it is taking measures to correct the problem. High conditionality involves designing a specific set of measures to restore a countrys balance problem, a fund agreement that the program will be adequate for that purpose, and the countrys commitment to implement the program.

Write my Essay on Why are the activities of the World Bank and the IMF so controversial?
essay writitng service

A Heritage Foundation study looked at IMF loans between 165 and 15. It was found that 54% of the nations getting help were no better off than they were before the loan. Perhaps a reason for this is that like the World Bank, the IMF does not do enough to enforce its conditions. If a country violates its agreement with the IMF the fund may suspend the loan, only to later go back on its word and negotiate a new agreement. The loan will be re-negotiated, and the process will start again. The seventeen different arrangements the IMF had with Peru between 171 and 177, as well as eight separate standby programs for Brazil between 165 best exemplify this.

As a condition for a loan the IMF will, for instance, demand that a nation reduces its current account deficit so the borrower restricts imports. Insistence that a country cut its budget deficit may cause the government to raise taxes, slowing growth. Even setting some useful conditions may have little impact if other internal and external policies still cause problems for the borrowing country. There are obviously cases in which the IMF has pushed for reform and been successful but this essay primarily concerned with weakness. As a synthesis to the IMF’s conditioning for structural adjustment programs and Sap’s in general is that they have been inconsistent. There is much secrecy surrounding the IMF making it extremely difficult to prepare quantitative analysis of IMF policies. This is due to the fact that the organization refuses to release audits of its. What can be known is that the poorest countries of the world owe more money to these two institutions than they do any other private or government institutions because most of these loans were so poorly designed that the borrowing countries have not reaped enough income to pay them back.

Todays emphasis on structural and institutional reforms has not always been part of IMF programs. In 144, delegates from 44 nations set up an international monetary system to promote trade. Each nation set a value for its currency relative to the dollar. The U.S., in turn, fixed the value of the dollar by agreeing to sell gold to other nations at $5 an ounce. The International Monetary Fund was set up to give temporary financing when countries had balance of payments problems as a result of their currencies breaking away from their fixed values. Although that system succeeded temporarily, differences in inflation between countries forced many to alter their currency values. In 171, President Nixon brought this system to an end by refusing to sell gold to other nations. The fixed-rate system collapsed completely. Instead of burning out, IMF simply switched its mission to acting as a medic to developing countries in crisis.

It has been discussed how the World Bank and the IMF’s methods have been open to scepticism. To further show the controversy surrounding the organizations, it is important to discuss how they also undermine human rights and domesticity. Economic policies such as Structural Adjustment Programs imposed by the World Bank and IMF have forced countries to cut education subsidies. The World Bank is the single largest source of money for education programs for less economically developed countries. In the 10s the Bank significantly boosted loans for education, spending an average of $1. billion for the period 11-1. It was found however that increased funding was not always matched by better results. In 15 the World Bank discovered that the failure rate for its education loans was rising also, increasing from 11.8% of the portfolio in 1 to 17.5% in 14. In addition there was a 5 percent increase in the number of projects whose implementation progress has been rated as unsatisfactory from 1.4% in 1 to 15.5%.

The World Bank and the IMF have also forced countries to cut down on teachers. In Kenya the IMF told the government that it would support a promised loan if the government gave into demands from striking teachers to raise salaries from the average basic salary of $150 per month despite the teacher strikes being supported by 70% of the population. In addition the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, have played a major role in creating health problems in less economically developed countries through the economic policies that are implemented through Structural Adjustment Programs. For example in Zimbabwe since the structural Adjustment Programs were introduced, a person would get one third less spent on health care for them. In the Philippines, due to an IMF program, health care budgets for malaria and tuberculosis have fallen by 7% and 6% respectively while immunization programs have fallen by 6%. Altogether sub-Saharan Africa spends four times as much on debt repayment as she does on healthcare.

These two institutions have forced cuts in health care, education and other social services. Mexico is a great example. Mexico has followed most economic policies from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. However since Mexico first adopted the IMF prescriptions of trade, wages have fallen, poverty and inequality have increased, as has the country’s debt. The results of becoming allies with the IMF has for less economically developed countries seen a rise in focus of resources on growing crops for export rather than raising farms and growing food for local communities. These impositions have particularly lead to deeper inequality in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

Following the revolution in Argentina on December 0 001. One of the first acts of interim president Adolfo Rodriguez Saa was to suspend payments on Argentinas $1 billion foreign debt. It was this debt and the decade-long austerity program imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that destroyed Argentinas economy. Since taking office, de la Ruas (the previous president) government had ruthlessly privatized essential services, slashed the salaries and pensions of government workers and raised taxes, finally driving fully 0% of the population below the poverty line.

One thing is for certain. Wherever there is such unfair political or economic pragmatism, there will always be an opposition. There are currently anti debt groups such as Jubilee, 50 years is enough and the World Bank Bonds Boycott that are building moral, political, and financial pressure on the World Bank. The intelligentsia of society have provided valuable critiques by publishing newspapers, magazines and academic journals. Anti-Debt groups have also been successful in organizing public demonstrations but they are not often reported on in the mainstream press for fear of higher awareness and an eventual backlash.

There have been a number of proposals from a wide range of civil society groups, scholars and member countries themselves for reforming the World Bank. Let us reductionally examine some ideals of a proposed system. At present the existing IMF is open to anyone who may qualify for bailouts and political aid to word it casually. A proposed IMF may wish upon bona fide liquidity assistance. The structures of loans given are at present unclear and varied. One should consider making them collateralized and short term. At present conditionality is negotiated. In future it would be more productive to see none except a standard membership into the IMF. Finally lets consider the IMF’s intersection with the World Bank being joint effort being turned into a clear alliance to assist in liberalisation.

Paul Krugman wrote in a Laboratory Columns Archive in May 18 that in effect we have moved from national to global financial markets without creating a corresponding global version of national regulation. His principles include floating exchange rates to prevent a foreign-currency crisis. His genius and ability to think in hard situations helped greatly to the country of
Macedonia, which he ruled. Most of his life he lived as a fighter and warrior. Alexander
was a smart, brilliant man who used his brains when it came down to fighting.

Order custom research paper on Alexander The Great

Alexander was born in an age of violence, conquest, and civil war. Alexander
was born in 56 B.C. in Pella. His father was Phillip the second who ruled all of
Macedonia. He was a shrewd king and general who conquered Greece. He stole the
reign of Macedonia from his brother's son. Alexander's mother was Olympias. She was
brilliant yet hot-tempered. Her father was King Neoptoelemus the first of Epirus.
Alexander's sister was Cleopatra (but not the Egyptian queen.) Alexander's ancestor was a man known as the hero Achilles. Alexander through his life carried a copy of 'Iliad.' Phillip taught Alexander that all the Macedonian kings were descendents from the hero Hercules, son of Zeus, and the high god.
Alexander's parents hated each other. Philip had lesser wives and children. One
child was Philip Arridaeus who was retarded. The rumor was that Olympias had
poisoned the mother of Arridaeus. Olympias once told Alexander that Philip was not his
real father. Philip never admitted to it though. Yet he always had made fun of Alexander
because of his high voice.
There were many legends about Alexander. As a boy Alexander tamed a horse
named Bucephalus. Later on in life when he was conquering Asia a steed carried him as
far as India and then died. Alexander built a city and named in Bucephalas after the
horse.
Alexander was known for his quick thinking and his smarts. In 4 or 4 B.C.
Phillip hired Aristotle to tutor Alexander. Aristotle encouraged Alexander interest in
other countries and people. He noticed Alexander's curiosity in plants and animals.
Later on he followed the Greek principle of ' a sound mind in a sound body.' He studied
literature, philosophy, and politics. He also trained in sports, physical fitness, and
warfare. School ended abruptly for him when he was sixteen years old because his father
called him away for duties in the government.
At sixteen his father left for war. Alexander was to serve as the regent of
Macedonia. He led an expedition through modern day Bulgaria and fought barbarians
and settled the city of Alexandropolis. After the expedition he became the general of
Philip's army. There was a lot of tense between Alexander and his father. Alexander
though, did protect his father in war while he played dead because he was injured.
Alexander always had a bad temper. When his father was having the celebration
for his final marriage the bride's uncle gave a toast. He had said he hoped his niece
would give birth to a ligament heir. Alexander had yelled at the uncle, 'What about me?
Am I a bastard?' He threw his goblet at the man. Philip was very angry with Alexander
for this, which made a huge fight between them. There is no record of what they said but
it is known that Philip pulled his sword out to strike Alexander with but he fell drunken
to the floor.
Alexander and Olympias moved left Macedonia because of what happened at the
celebration. Later they reunited but Alexander had no trust in his father. Philip had
arranged to have Arridaeus marry the daughter of Persia's governor. Alexander thought
that this meant Arridaeus would become king. He planned to marry her himself. Philip
found out about this plan and placed Alexander under house arrests and banished all his
friends, except for Hephaestion, from the kingdom. He divorced Olympias thinking she
had encouraged Alexander to do so. While divorcing Olympias he gave their daughter,
Cleopatra, hand in marriage to Olympias brother, king of Epirus.
In 6 BC. King Philip was going into the theater where his daughter was having
her wedding. He was stabbed in the heart by the captain of his bodyguards, Pausanias.
Pausanias ran across the vineyard but got snagged by a vine and was caught by three of
the king's bodyguards. People thought that Olympias and Alexander helped plot the
death of King Philip the second.
At twenty-three years old Alexander became King Alexander the third. He did
not just get to take the throne though. He had several rivals that thought they should get
the throne. One of them was his cousin, Amyntas who Philip also took the throne from.
Alexander was a handsome, clean-shaven, heavy drinking man. He was in good health
and was very athletic. He loved reading, music, and the theater. He was a loyal and
brilliant general. He proceeded with Philip's plans to take Persia and most of Asia
Minor. He named himself 'Lord of Asia.' He tried to treat Persians fair so that they
would accept him as their leader. Yet his impulsiveness, bad temper, and drinking got in
the way.
He antagonized the men around him so much that one of his favorite general's son
plotted to kill him. Alexander found out about this and killed the son and the general.
Once a general successor mocked him and Alexander killed him that minute.
In 7, he captured some rebels and fell in love with the chief's daughter Roxane.
He married her and was pregnant two times but the first one was stillborn. While he was
married he conquered India. His troops didn't want to go on so they headed home and
fought and the way back. In one battle Alexander had an arrow taken into his chest and
almost died.
When he got home he found out that the governors he left in charge had abused
the authority. He executed them all. He wanted peace for his people and the Persians.
He ordered eighty of his men to marry highborn Persian women. Alexander married a
woman by either the name of Barsine or Stateira, King Darius daughter, while he was
still married to Roxane. He promoted many of the Persians to higher rankings. Yet his
efforts for unity fell short.
On June 1, 5BC. Alexander the Great died of an illness that involves a
very high fever. People now think it was either malaria or typhoid fever.
Roxane was pregnant at the time Alexander died with Alexander's son.
Barsine could have also been pregnant too but there is no proof of this. Roxane sent a
letter to Barsine asking her to come to Babylon. Barsine did what she was asked.
Barsine and her sister came to Babylon and Roxane murdered both of them and threw
their bodies into a well. Roxane then gave birth to Alexander Aegus who became King
Alexander the fourth but he was co-king with Alexander's brother Arridaeus until
Olympias had him killed. The empire Alexander had worked so hard for, fell apart.
Alexander was never a follower. He was always having some way to go
about something a different way then people would expect. He didn't always make the
best choices but at least he was a leader and without him Asia would not be what it is
today.

Please note that this sample paper on Alexander The Great is for your review only. It is interesting to note that the speaker has not taken more extreme measures in getting rid of the bird, perhaps because he believes it would be wrong to harm it just because he doesn’t appreciate its singing.

5-6 At this point the speaker blames himself in part for own intolerance and unappreciative attitude towards the bird, since the bird can’t be held responsible for the way it sings or what it must sound like. He is aware of the fact that the bird just sings whatever it sings, however it sings it and when, because that is simply its nature. On the other hand, he cannot help being annoyed by it either.

7-8 As a result of his blameworthiness in the previous stanza, the speaker says there “must be something wrong” (line 7) with him because he dislikes the bird’s singing so intensely. He then generalizes over this in the end, concluding that there “must be something wrong” with anyone, not just with himself, “In wanting to silence any song” (line 8). He seems to concede that the point of song is to bring joy and pleasure to whoever might be listening to it, regardless of whether the song is solicited by the listener or not.

Commentary

1. The title of the poem seems to carry a clue to as to how we are to take it in terms of its meaning. The word “minor” connotes not only inferiority and comparative unimportance, but it is also the name of a musical key that is typically sad and lamenting in sound.

Please note that this sample paper on Analysis of Frost's "A Minor Bird" is for your review only. Even seemingly positive stereotypes that link a person or group to a positive trait can have negative consequences. Prejudice is prejudging or making a decision about a person or group of people without sufficient knowledge. Prejudicial thinking is frequently based on stereotypes. Discrimination is the denial of equal treatment (by individuals or institutions) in many arenas, including employment, education, housing, banking and political rights. Discrimination is an action that can follow prejudicial thinking. Stereotypes lead to prejudice, and prejudice leads to discrimination. Too often discrimination reinforces stereotypes, and the entire cycle is repeated. Our challenge is to break the cycle.

Matthew Wayne Shepard was born on December 1, 176 in Casper, Wyoming. He was the oldest son of Judy Peck Shepard and Dennis Shepard. Shortly after midnight on October 6, 18, two other young men took Matthew from a bar to a remote field about a mile outside of Laramie. Once there, these men took him out to a split-rail fence, mercilessly beat him with a pistol, tortured him, then tied him up onto the fence, and left him for dead. All the while he begged for his life. He was found late the next day at 6 p.m. by a two bikers, some 18 hours after the brutal attack. When the bikers first saw Matthew tied to the fence, they thought that what they saw a scarecrow, but realized that it was a person.

While Matthew lay dying in hospital, just a few miles away, a group of students from Colorado State University thought it would be funny to ride atop a homecoming float that featured a scarecrow figure designed to resemble Matthews battered body. The figure was wearing a sign that said, Im gay. An obscene message was painted across the back of the scarecrows shirt. It was supposed to be a joke. Matthew remained in a coma until Monday, October 1, when he died at 15 a.m. with his family at his bedside. Hospital officials said Matthew had a fracture from behind his head to just in front of his right ear and a massive brain stem injury which affected his vital signs, including his heart beat, body temperature and other involuntary functions. There were also approximately a dozen small lacerations around his head, face and neck. He was so badly injured in the attack that doctors were unable to operate. He never regained consciousness after being found, and remained on full life support.

This brings me to the heart of what I am trying to debate; what exactly causes a human being to act of this nature? I believe that how we were raised is directly responsible for the type of person we are today. I have asked a number of my friends and coworkers about what they think is main influence upon these acts, and .% of those people either claimed it to be the media’s fault or that it was the parents fault. It seems so surreal when I think about someone going out and committing these acts of hatred. The same question continues to run through my head, “Why or how could a human do this?”

Custom writing service can write essays on A Stereotype
essay writitng service

What is the media? The media is any company or organization that in one way or another is trying to sell something to the public. It is a well-known fact that the media is always exposing children to things they may not have learned at home. These are often of a sexual or violent nature. When a hate crime is committed, a lot of times their will be an argument or debate over what brought that person to commit such an heinous act.

One excuse used, and most commonly used by the victim’s parents or relatives, is that what their child did was all because of what he or she saw on television or a movie, or what he or she heard on the radio. Because of all the violent and sexual nature found outside of households today, it makes the media an easy scapegoat.

The second most common excuse is placing all the blame on the parents. This is the one I stand behind the most. A parent should be held responsible for their child’s actions. It is so easy to say your child is troubled because of the media; the movies they watch and the music they listen to.

Who you are, how you act, and what you do, stem’s from how you were raised. Your parents, the people you’ve grown up around, the environment you were raised in, this is what makes you you. Think about this Do you ever question your own bias and prejudice? How would you feel if someone of another race or ethnic pointed out ways in which your attitude and behavior may be insensitive? Do you ever notice character stereotyping in TV, music or movies that is based on race?

Why are all these fingers pointed at the media, at movies packed to the brim with violence, music filled with lyrics of hate and crime? Simply because no one in this day of age is willing to take any sort of responsibility. When I say this I refer to ever child’s biggest influence in their life, their parents.

In a country founded on the notion of religious freedom, it is just amazing how many children are raised believing that there is something wrong with anyone who isn’t of their religion, race or sexuality. If more people in this country want to actually change their lives for the better they must be aware of their own attitudes and behavior towards those of a different race, religion and sex. They must be willing to take unpopular stands to support the rights of all people, not just people in the groups they belong to.

How do you feel when you encounter people who have mental and/or physical disabilities? What is your reaction? Have you ever thought about what it might be like if you had a disability? Do you react the same way toward people wearing glasses as you do toward people with hearing aids or in wheelchairs?

Looking for ways to fight discrimination? Learn more about something you fear or don’t fully understand. It seems to me though, that if more parents tuned into their child’s wavelength or made an attempt to be there when they need them or have a question. Everyone knows life throws a lot of curve balls and questions at you. And these days when people have guns, sex can kill you, and when jobs are hard to find, where does a young person go for solid answers? It’s hard for a child to grow up these day’s when there are so many parents who don’t care and teachers that don’t have the time. When movies are extremely vulgar and music is really violent. Television glamorizes these sorts of things; making it appealing to children, and when they can’t find someone to go to for answers, whom can they go to?

Please note that this sample paper on A Stereotype is for your review only. It has a verbal communication statement in the bottom right hand corner of the ad. “THE BOLD LOOK OF KOHLER.” This statement is regarded as the theme of the entire ad. In the top left hand corner you will see the phone number, web address, creator of the ad, and a short description of the products being sold. The statement reads, “The Purist Suite featuring sak bath and Purist lavatory. Tempting, isn’t it?” In the non-verbal communication part of the ad, you will find a remake of the Adam and Eve story as told in the Bible and the Holy Quran. While Adam and Eve stare at the tub and sink, and Eve holds the apple, it is implying that these products are tempting to humans just as the first human beings were tempted to eat the fruit. Both of the characters are dressed in skimpy and tight outfits that have designs of flowers and stems. This is sexually implying that the two are in transition of going in the tub together in root of their temptation. Through sexual and tempting desires, the products shown in the ad appeal to the consumer by selling them more than just what is shown in the advertisment. Using the proper techniques to project the ad in front of the reader, the author appeals to its audience by drawing a comparison of the beginning of time and the temptation of Eve.

Ground

Write my Essay on Advertising Adam and Eve
essay writing service

Adam is looking at the bath tub while Eve stars at the sink. The tub and sink are the products the ad is trying to sell its intended audience. The behavioral traits both characters are projecting are full of lust and desire. They see the sink and tub as their inner temptations of self indulgence. Their bodies are pointed straight toward the tub and the sink. This implies that the characters are giving the products their full and utmost attention. Adam has a robust and physically fit body. This suggests that only men with bodies as built as the character are allowed in the tub. Eve has a sexy body with slender legs and a more than average size breasts. This suggest that only women who fit this profile may wash their hands in the sink.

The apple tree in between both the characters is of historical reference. Eve has an apple in her hand. According to the story of Adam and Eve in the Bible, God forbid Eve to eat fruit from the tree. With her temptation of human desire, she picked and ate the apple against Gods will. This advertisment is portraying the very same story. Instead the products are being perceived as tempting.

Warrant

Ethos Credibility is established by the reputation of the magizine. Dwell is a pretigious magazine in the home furniture industry that caters to the tastes of upper class dwellers in suburban and urban area. This particular ad is found in the third page of the magizine and is a two page layout. Usually, advertisments in the front of the magizine are the most noticed. The authors name is also written in the top right hand corner beside the contact information.

Pathos The characters in the ad are catching feelings of lust, temptation, amazment, and human desire. Emotions are running high because the two are so tempted to lay in the bath tub together. Emotional stimulation is erected by the depiction of the clothing, body positioning, body figure, and the comparison of the apple tree to the biblic times of Adam and Eve.

Logos The author is not concerned with logic in depicting the advertisment. It is common sense that an apple tree will not be in the middle of a tiled bathroom floor. Also, ones humanistic desires as compared to Adam and Eve are not met with the sale of these bathroom facilities.

With the creative tecniques being implemented by the author of this advertisment, sexual temptations of desires are being used to sell these products to their audience. The illustration of physically fit bodies and skimpy outfits depicts the superficial attitude that only the good looking are allowed to use these lavatory facilities. With this in mind, the advertisment is obviously trying to sell sex and temptation with the products. The author is trying to target wealthy clientales whose average income rate is between 10,000/year to 00,000/year. Individuals with this houshold income range can be the only ones who can afford such a bathroom. The fact that an individual needs a bathroom illustrated in the ad shows that there would be no need for anyone below the income rate to acquire this lavatory. This advertisment appeals only to the upperclass men and women because it soley matches their tastes and preferences.

The men and women who have slim and fit features are also included in the target audience. The ones who look good enough as the characters in the ad are also potential clients of the company. The way both characters squint their eyes implies the lust and desire they have for the products being presented. The apple tree in the middle and the apple in Eve’s hand is a symbolic meaning of self indulgence. One is indulging in their desires if they were to go out and buy these products. The ad suggests that the temption is as comparable as to the story of Adam and Eve. These two depictions create a link to the claim and the ground of the Toulmin model.

Please note that this sample paper on Advertising Adam and Eve is for your review only. By going to war we are throwing away the most precious gift we have received. Avoiding war with the Soviet Union is relatively easy. The only difficult part is being the first one to extend our hand to help bring about peace. We must not wait for the Soviet Union to come sit with us at the table; we must go sit with them. The United States has to be the one to lead the beginning of a global economy. In order to materialize a global economy, three steps must be taken. The United States must offer monetary economic aid to help strengthen the economy of the Soviet Union, as well as a sign of good faith. It must also strive to make the global economy a free market economy. The third and most important way to avoid war is for the United States to open all lines of communications with the Soviet Union.

The first step to peacefully co-exist is to offer monetary economic aid. By offering this aid the first thing it will show the Soviet Union is that the United States its not its enemy but its ally. We must think of the relationship between the Soviet Union and the United States as trying to make a new friend. Before you become someone’s friend you must earn their trust and respect. By offering this aid we are doing both. The Soviet Union will trust us because we are showing them that we are trying the make things better for them and not worse. The Soviet Union will respect us when they see we are spending our hard earned money to help them in there struggle.

The global economy must also be a free market economy. This means that the United States must open all trade lines with the Soviet Union. The United States has certain goods that are of value to the Soviet Union and vice versa. When a person has a friend, there is a mutual interest in one another. If one friend has nothing to offer the other, the friendship ceases to exist. As long as there is a common interest, then there friendship will always flourish. When trade begins, contacts are signed, time is invested, and obligations have to be met. These bonds that are made last a lifetime. One of the best ways to strengthen a relationship is to work with one another. When you work with one another you start to help and understand the other person. In the same way if the United States trades with the Soviet Union, then we will began to understand one another and develop bonds that are solid as oak.

Communication is the key to the door of global economy. In order to maintain a successful relationship you must discuss everything with one another. You must tell them your needs and wants, what you like and what you dislike, and foremost how you feel. The Soviet Union and the United States must talk to one another to establish a progressive movement. By keeping the line of communication open, no false judgments are made about one another, and an accidental war can be avoided.

Custom writing service can write essays on Cold war

I believe that if we take these steps in our relationship with the Soviet Union, then it will ultimately be a successful one. However, these steps cannot be accomplished over night. A person begins to trust someone else after a constant display of trust and generosity. By offering economic aid, creating a free market economy, and opening all lines of communication, we are accomplishing just that. I now envision an economy. A global economy that listens to one another’s needs and helps each other out accordingly. The illustrious humanitarian Mahatma Gandhi once said that, “Actions for the sake of oneself binds. Action for the sake of others delivers from bondage.”

Please note that this sample paper on Cold war is for your review only. Feeling a lack of identity while living in the United States has forced Alvarez to immerse herself in reading and writing, a form of escape due to her being taunted by schoolgirls for her ethnicity and accent. She puts her own personal experiences in her books, making it that more personal and heartwarming to read and feeling a connection with the author formulates a more enjoyable reading adventure, which Alvarez easily does. Her despair, authenticity and effort to represent inner drama of her conversion to an American self has been a hard journey. Julia Alvarez’s Dominican heritage and oppressive childhood experiences in America have greatly influenced her writing and perspective on controversial issues such as rape, abuse, miscarriage, cancer, harassment, and divorce.

Julia Alvarez was born the 7th of March, 150, in New York City. Not long after, her family moved back to the Dominican Republic, where Alvarez lived until the age of ten. She grew up on the family compound surrounded by love and an abundance of maids, sisters, aunts, and other women of the family (Discovering Biography 1). “Although I was raised in the Dominican Republic by Dominican parents in an extended Dominican family, mine was an American childhood” (Discovering Biography 1). Eventually, Alvarez’s family was forced to flee their homeland because a plot involving her father to overthrow the dictator, Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina, was discovered. On the plane ‘home’ to America she wrote,

. . . All my childhood I had dressed like an American, eaten American foods,

and befriended American children. I had gone to an American school and spent most of the day speaking and reading English. At night my prayers were full of blond hair and blue eyes and snow. . . All my childhood I had longed for this moment of arrival. And here I was, an American girl, coming home at last. (Discovering Biography )

Write your Life: Through the Eyes of Las MariposasLatinas Abriendo Camino (Latinas Laying Way) research paper

Alvarez’s high expectations and excitement in returning to her birthplace did not last long though.

While living in the Bronx, her mom encouraged her to consider herself an American, but homesickness, prejudice and alienation by others were some of the devastations she experienced because she did not look like an American. Some of the boys at school called her awful names, names at the time she did not understand, but she understood their angry hurtful faces (Contemporary Authors 4). The faces were normal, they were habitually made to feel inadequate and unworthy to even live amongst the whites.

. . .People of color were treated as if they were inferior, prone to violence, uneducated, untrustworthy, lazy--all the ‘bad’ adjectives we were learning in our new language. . .We were lucky, we were white Dominicans or we would have had a much harder time of it in this country. We would have encountered a lot more prejudice than we already did, for white as we were, we found that our Latino-ness, our accents, our habits and smells, added ‘color’ to our complexion. (O’Hearn 14-144)

Alvarez and her sister did endure much racism and bullying. Often they were yelled at to, “Go back where you came from!” At one point, when the schoolgirls started

throwing rocks at them, their mother decided they were not safe and began applying for boarding school, where Alvarez eventually went at the age of thirteen (O’Hearn 144). Then, “the most frightening thing happened, ‘she explains, ‘I began losing my Spanish before getting a foot-hold in English. I was without a language” (Women of Hope 1). This was a time of feeling a loss and insecurity within herself. All of these experiences contributed to the breaking point in her life on the road to be a writer.

Experience makes a writer and Julia Alvarez certainly attains that. Many of her works are about the emigration process, racism, political involvement, and women’s rights. By the time she went off to college such issues were the focus of everyday American life. This was the era of the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, and women’s movements. These experiences along with others from her Dominican Republic Island were high on her priority list to write about. “It is in writing, she says, that she has come to understand her life. ‘El papel lo aguanto todo,’ she says, quoting her mother ‘Paper holds everything.’ It is one of the commandments by which she writes-- and lives” (Prescott ). In her second novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, Alvarez explores the political nature of the country, and the women’s role within it. She felt a certain responsibility to write about the three Mirabal sisters, who were savagely murdered in 160 by Trujillo’s men, because she did not want their story to be lost or forgotten (Women of Hope ).

. . . She wanted to reach both spheres of her two cultures - so that Dominicans living in the U.S. would remember these remarkable figures in their struggle against tyranny and readers would be familiar with these three women who stood up to oppression in a time of terrible violence. And she wanted to focus the world’s eyes on a part of Dominican history that was about solidarity and moral choices rather than the endless saga of dictators and gangster presidents, revolutions and regimes. (Women of Hope )

Coincidentally, Alvarez’s family fled the country that same year. The day of the murder, November 5, is now celebrated in most Latin American countries as the International Day Against Violence Towards Women.

In the historical novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, Alvarez recounts the lives and deaths of the four Mirabal sisters in a format beginning with their childhood and gradually defining how they came to be involved in the liberation movement. “Their

stories ended just as ours [the Alvarez’s] began” (Sirias 6). Alvarez found out while in the Dominican Republic and gathering information, that her father and the Mirabal sisters belonged to the same political underground, where the sisters were known as las Mariposas (the Butterflies) and later became symbols of resistance to Trujillo’s rule. Alvarez has an emotional attachment to this story of the Mirabal’s lives for the sole reason that she is involved, for it was her father’s involvement in a plot to overthrow Trujillo that forced them to flee the country. She wanted to comprehend and grasp her fathers instigative attitude and reasons for being involved.

. . . It was also a desire to understand my parents’ generation, who fell victim to the dictatorship-- la generacion perdida ( the lost generation), as they are known in the Dominican Republic- so much talent, so much energy and faith, so many lives gone to waste. I needed to understand and to redeem the time for myself. ( McClellan 1)

Also, while in the Dominican Republic researching, she met Noris, Patria’s daughter (oldest of the sisters) and Minou, Minerva’s daughter (second youngest), and eventually Dede the only surviving sister, (Sirias 54) who decided on that fateful day not to go with her sisters to visit their husbands in jail. It was after meeting Dede that Julia Alvarez, “was inspired to undertake the task of portraying the lives of the Mirabal sisters in the form of a novel” (Sirias 54).

Dede, the oldest, is in a way the narrator of the story. She is the one that shares the insights and stories that the butterflies could not. The novel is written in a different fashion, with the reader already knowing three of the sisters die, in the beginning pages, but how, why, and what for are the questions that leave the reader wanting to peruse and understand more. The book begins with a gringa dominicana

interviewing Dede about her sisters, for the anniversary of their deaths are approaching. Then, a flashback comes and Dede recalls one night where Patria, Minerva, Maria Teresa, herself and their parents are sitting in rockers outside under the anacahuita tree. As their Papa is telling their futures, he refers to Dede when he mentions, “She’ll bury us all,’ her father adds, laughing, ‘in silk and pearls” (Alvarez 8). Evidently, this is a form of foreshadowing that Dede herself did not want to believe. “ A chill goes through her, for she feels it in her bones, the future is now beginning. By the time it is over, it will be the past, and she doesn’t want to be the only one left to tell their story” (Alvarez 10). Fiction eventually becomes reality.

The book’s political nature takes over as the main focus of the Mirabal family’s lives. Alvarez grew up in the Dominican Republic feeling the strong aftermaths of her political society and Trujillo’s strong rule. When beginning her writing career in America, Alvarez also experienced the many riots and protests for women’s rights, segregation, and the Vietnam War, thus greatly influencing her life in both worlds. As the Mirabal sisters mature, they become increasingly involved in the underground revolution. “At the onset, in the sisters’ minds, the idea of a revolution seems glamorous, exciting, and even sexy” (Sirias 55). Las Mariposas recognized a need for change, because Trujillo had the second longest rule in history, over 0 years, and was killing his own people, confiscating property, putting innocent people in jail, and other scandalous atrocities.

The mariposas showed power, courage, resistance and gradually become a symbol for all the other Dominicans. Their high rank among the people, puts a focus on them, eventually leading Trujillo to do something drastic. One night, their Tio (uncle) Pepe is at the house after the sisters have been released from prison and relates a disturbing story to them. While at a reception honoring El Jefe, (informally referring to Trujillo), Tio Pepe overheard El Jefe, who is surrounded by his ‘flies,’ say,

. . . Well, boys, I’ve really only got two problems left. If I could only find the man to resolve them. . .Sure enough the biggest shit lover of all, Pena, says, ‘Jefe, I am at your service. Just tell me your problems and I’ll give my life if needs be-- blah blah blah.’ So El Jefe says, brace yourselves now. He says, looking straight at me, he says, ‘My only two problems are the damn church and the Mirabal sisters.’ (Alvarez 81)

Ultimately, El Jefe’s problems are solved when he hires five of his henchmen to kill the sisters. The morning the three sisters leave Dede shouts, “I don’t want to have to live without you” (Alvarez 66). By now, she had a strong feeling of their fate, she was always nervous each time they drove the treacherous mountain road. Upon driving home from visiting their husbands in jail, a terrible incident occurred. Three of the henchmen each killed a sister, another man killed their driver, while the fifth stood guard on the road. Alvarez’s writing emphasizes the importance of the sisters’ involvement in the political regime. Because of the dangerous lives they led, Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa were all murdered, while Alvarez’s own family escaped the sisters’ fate. Six months after Trujillo had the sisters killed, he also met the same fate.

Through the Mirabal sisters lives, Alvarez explores themes that apply to her as well freedom, tyranny, and survival (Discovering Authors ). Although the book was well received with the public and her father, whom she thought would give her the hardest time (Authors and Artists for Young Adults ). Her mother did not like it, as she felt the book was “so similar to the Alvarez’s family story” (Authors and Artists for Young Adults ). The inside covers of her book are filled with the names of men and women who were murdered by Trujillo, in a way resembling the wall at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., with both a tribute to patriotic anonymity.

Alvarez grew up in hard times in both countries. “Back in the 160’s it was hard going to keep a sense of identity, both as a Dominican and as an American” (Women of Hope ). They were very few role models of Latino writers and little sense of community, when Alvarez grew up (Women of Hope ). In some ways Alvarez has set the precedent for more Latino writers, who are now more recognized. Mario Vargas Llosa, a Peruvian writer, read the Spanish language version of, En el Tiempo de Las Mariposas, (In the Time of the Butterflies), and was inspired to write his most recent novel, La Fiesta del Chivo, which focuses on Trujillo’s dictatorship as well. Seen here is that other American Latino writers as well as Alvarez, are the subjects of literary cross-pollination. Sandra Cisneros, Denise Chavez, and Ana Castilo are some of the new writers whose work she is excited about that is recently being discovered by the younger audience (Women of Hope ). It only takes one person to set the unveiling, to what is now referred to as the Latino music invasion. Years ago, Gloria Estefan was singing herein America, but was not yet well recognized. Ricky Martin came over and shook his butt, and the next thing America is seeing are the faces of Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias, and Shakira. Christina Maria Aguilera suddenly wasn’t afraid to say, “Hey, I’m a Latina and I speak Spanish.” The same case is being seen now in the literature world, as many more Latin writers are emerging. . . . How many times did I hear,’ los hombres son de calle, las mujeres de su casa.’ Men belong to the streets (the world), women belong at home. Latinas of my generation were not encouraged to have public voices or to seek any fulfillment outside the parameters of la familia and the church. (McClellan 1)

Unjustly, the women were treated inferior to the men. Latino men are suppose to embody bravery, strength, power, and importance. The man rules over woman, thus men fell entitled to control the behavior of women. Consequently, women are deprived of many professions, privileges, and freedoms because of this control (Sirias 7). Alvarez implies that courage is what kept the Mirabal sisters going, and it gave her her own strength to be a writer. She felt at odds when she became a writer, for in her culture that was not customary. The women stayed at home and raised the children. So, to go outside her own culture and tell stories from the American point of view was sacrificing her own upbringing and all she had known. There was an instance once, when a son wanted to become a doctor. His father, who had immigrated to the United States, realized their place in American society. He told his son that those weren’t jobs they did and would not allow him to pursue that career. It was in a way a disgrace to his family to even think of going outside that line that divided them, Mexican-Americans from the Americans, he should have been proud of what he already was, his heritage and the qualities that came with that.

Julia Alvarez also focuses on the double-standards between men and women. A few decades ago when being a woman had no privileges and rights, they now have equal opportunities. Examples are men having affairs and experimenting with their sexuality. Don Enrique, the father of the Mirabal sisters, was discovered to have a whole other family, a mistress and four daughters (Sirias 80). Nelson, Patria’s son was having sex with a young widow. Patria, being shocked since he was only seventeen, asked her husband Pedrito to talk to him, instead of being alarmed as was Patria he was prideful at the fact he was entering the sexual world early (Sirias 80). Later, Patria also expresses her approval. “But I didn’t resent her, no. She delivered my son gently into manhood from his boyhood, something a mother cannot possibly do” (Alvarez 15). Were the main focus here a women, she would have been horribly scrutinized against, especially in this day, being called a whore, slut and other degrading names.

From being a woman, to an ethnic writer, is distinguishing of Julia Alvarez. Her ethnicity differentiates her from any other mainstream author. Alvarez states, “because I am a Latina, there are certain themes, concerns, ways of focusing subjects to which I gravitate” (Sirias 14). In fact because of their shared heritage, many themes are common among these writers “the importance of family, the importance of religion, acculturation, cultural displacement, assimilation, politics, racism, machismo, superstition, generational differences and so on” (Sirias 14). “I am a Dominican, hyphen, American,’ she comments. ‘As a fiction writer, I find that the most exciting things happen in the realm of the hyphen--the place where two worlds collide or blend together” (Walker 1). Alvarez’s point of view is delightfully positive, joining two different cultures together, especially when in America where segregation shaped many people’s opinions for the worse, normally leaving a permanent position in people’s minds of not to mix the races.

Julia Alvarez’s lasting influence because of her writing on culture is being seen everyday. At a book signing in Tempe, Arizona for Julia Alvarez, many people were sharing their own personal stories dealing with their culture, as a Dominican. One young woman was especially touched, as she related to Mrs. Alvarez that her parents, who used to live in the Dominican Republic, acted as if it was a topic that was not discussed, it was “hush-hush,” and by reading her books, it helped understand her own culture and what her parents went through. Another young woman, also a Dominicana, started to cry and expressed to everyone that through her books, Alvarez was telling her own mother’s story and how she escaped the Dominican Republic and Trujillo’s harsh rule. Tears came to everyone’s eyes as it was extremely heartwarming, the effect this one woman, a talented writer, can have on people.

As one can see Julia Alvarez’s bicultural life and distressing childhood

experiences in America greatly influence her writing and therein her controversial themes and lasting mark in not only our culture, but others as well. She still experiences racism and prejudice today. “As Julia Alvarez stepped up to give a talk about her first novel... a Dominican girl in the audience turned to her friend and said, ‘What she got to say to us? She’s a white girl’” (Authors and Artists for Young Adults 1). Now, though, she has a way to deal with that, writing, a talent she acquired from people like these two girls, they gave her a reason to write. Such issues as immigration, alienation, heritage, identity, sacrifice, fear, abuse, violence, and rebellion are what gravitate readers to Alvarez’s writing (Sirias 8). For these themes are real in life, not just something written about in a book. Her unique experiences combined with natural history make her writing diverse from that of any American or Hispanic writer.

Please note that this sample paper on Life: Through the Eyes of Las MariposasLatinas Abriendo Camino (Latinas Laying Way) is for your review only. This magnificent continent is larger than either Europe or Australia, with Ice and snow covering 8 percent of Antarctica. Antarctica is the most extraordinary continent in the world. The Antarctic ice sheet is the worlds largest, and contains about seven-tenths of the world’s fresh water. This stunning and tremendous land is home to many animals such as penguins, polar bears, seals, whales, fish and much, much more. Most extraordinary of all facts is that Antarctica is actually a desert. Amazingly it gets the same amount of rain as the Sahara desert which is in fact less then 50mm. It is so cold and freezing in Antarctica that the temperature can even reach -8 Degrees Celsius.

Antarctica is the last vast wilderness on the planet. Its gigantic icebergs, mountain ranges and the emptiness of the polar plateau boggle the mind, while its temperatures, winds and weather send shivers down the spine. Its a place of extremes - beautiful and serene, savage and violent - and its scale is almost vast whether youre on the ground or viewing it from an aircraft.

The last decade has shown, much to the relief of many, tourism, no mining or oil drilling which has effected Antarcticas growth industry. Theres a good chance that the continent will remain a free and clean place of international cooperation and a better place.

Antarctica is a special place because it has less pollution than anywhere else in the world. It doesn’t have any smokestack industry, agricultural activity or permanent human population. From this point of view, Antarctica will only remain scientifically valuable if it is properly managed today with no mining or anything which can harm or destroy this splendid and gorgeous place. But unfortunately today dark shadows of pollution are looming over this remote continent and has to be stopped.

You may have heard about global warming. It seems that in the last 100 years the earths temperature has increased about half a degree Celsius. This may not sound like much, but even half a degree can have an effect on our planet. The main ice covered landmass is Antarctica at the South Pole, with about 0 percent of the worlds ice and 70 percent of its fresh water. Antarctica is covered with ice an average of ,1 meters which is about 7,000 feet thick. If all of the Antarctic ice melted, sea levels around the world would rise about 61 meters or ,000 feet. Which can be very harmful, but we can prevent this by causing less pollution and allowing no mining in Antarctica. But if pollution or mining was allowed in Antarctica then Antarctica will then become a garbage dump and effect us.

This historic site made a deep impression upon all on us. With its uniqueness and its beauty. Antarctica is also a wonder of scientific interest and the largest area on earth containing World Heritage Values. Mining is banned in the Antarctic by the Antarctic Treaty, and there are no known future plans by the Antarctic Treaty nations to reverse this decision.

In past times it was only heroes, scientists and explorers whoever visited the frozen expanses of the Antarctic - the coldest, windiest, iciest, driest, most barren and remote area in the world. To discover the uniqueness and the extraordinary wonders of this continent. Now when we think of Antarctica we think about its magnificence and beauty and also how important this continent is to us. We also think about the animals which live in and Antarctica and how they might die if mining or pollution was allowed in Antarctica.

So with all this information should we consider the fact that mining should be allowed in Antarctica? Based

in Dallas, Southwest currently operates more than ,700 flights a day.

The objective of location strategy is to maximize the benefit of location to the firm. Companies make location decisions relatively infrequently, usually because demand has outgrown the current plants capacity or because of changes in labor productivity, exchange rates, costs, or local attitudes.

Location options include

· Expanding an existing facility instead of moving

· Staying at current location while opening branches elsewhere

· Shutting down existing location and starting over at a new one.

There are 5 factors that effect location decisions. They are

1. Market economics

. Better international communications

. More rapid travel operations

4. Ease of capital flow between branches

5. Cheaper labor

For example, Southwest airlines recently accounced future growth plans. On June , 00, Southwest will initiate new nonstop service between Chicago Midway and San Diego with three daily nonstop flights. A seven-day advance purchase fare of $8 each way based on a round-trip purchase is available on this new nonstop service through June . On the same day, Southwest also will add two daily nonstop flights between Phoenix and Orange County, bringing to five the total of daily nonstop round-trip flights between the two cities. Southwest

Airlines are utilizing the location strategy of staying at current location while opening branches elsewhere.

Managing Quality

Managing Quality is essential to any business. Quality, itself, is the ability of a product or service to meet customer needs. Quality does not only rely on the

typical finished goods or related services. Quality is based on and encompasses many different aspects. Quality is important because it is used as a basis for a company’s reputation. Perceptions about a company’s goods and services can be based on the reputation, whether good and bad. Southwest ranked second among companies across all industry groups, and first in the airline industry in the magazine’s 00 America’s Most Admired Companies List.

At Southwest Airlines, they have always governed the way they conduct business. It highlights their desire to serve Customers and gives Southwest direction when o make service-related decisions. Southwest feels it is another way of saying, we always try to do the right thing!. Their customer focus and commitment has led the way to the airline industrys best cumulative consumer satisfaction record, according to statistics accumulated and published by the U.S. Department of Transportation. In addition, Southwest’s bold decision to maintain its operations at status quo post-September 11 has enabled it to gain market share. However, as the industry continues to ‘ramp up’, industry pricing is likely to remain under pressure.

Key Investment Positives

Southwest is regarded as the best situated US airline (Citigroup valuation). Southwest possesses the lowest unit operating costs and the strongest financial position. With the rest of the commercial airline system having cut about 0% capacity following the terrorist assaults (NY Times November 1, 00), only

Southwest has maintained its full flight schedule. The airline is likely to gain market share, because some other carriers have shut down their low-cost airline subsidiaries. Southwest could benefit in the intermediate term it maintains the status quo. It concentrates mainly on flights to small cities, avoiding congested airports in metropolitan areas. Moreover, Airline industry officials generally believe that larger, international carriers more likely be terrorism targets. Southwest should start growing again before the rest of the industry, as the airline is to expand capacity by taking delivery of new planes throughout 00. This will further accelerate Southwest’s market-share gains.

Financial Strength

Southwest in financial terms is the strongest carrier in the United States, if not the world. The company generated positive cash flows and was profitable in the 4th quarter of 001 (Southwest’s annual report), when the rest of the US Airline industry had losses totaling about $ billion in the worst period in aviation history. Southwest’s ratio of debt to total capitalization was 40% at the end of 001, when the company had $. billion in cash. Southwest focuses on short-term stabilization and maintenance of its cash position. Lower fuel prices and travel-agent commissions should produce about $80 million in annual savings, offsetting expected security and insurance costs. Southwest plans to increase yields and fares steadily through 00, though revenue per available seat mile faces pressure from weak demand. The airline’s capital spending in 001 totaled

almost $1 billion, and Southwest has targeted outlays of about $600 million for 00 and $1.1 billion for 00.

Simple Operating Model with Low Cost Structure

Southwest’s use of only one aircraft type, the Boeing 77, and its no-frills service and ticketless operations have enabled the carrier to maintain a low-cost structure, compared with its competitors. Southwest does not operate a hub and spoke system and does not have any international operations. Thus, security will not be as difficult for Southwest to enforce as anticipated for most other carriers.

Capacity Expansion

With many airlines worldwide having pared capacity 0% because of the unprecedented drop in customer demand following the hijacking attacks, the jetliner market is glutted and Southwest could buy used 77s at low prices. The carrier did not reduce its capacity after the terrorists attacks. As the rest of the industry struggles to resume growth, Southwest plans to receive 1 new aircrafts and will retire some older planes over the course of 00, for a net addition of 11 airplanes representing capacity expansion of .5 to 4 %. The airline plans an annual capacity growth rate of 8% through 01.

Growth Opportunities

The airline has a history of communities petitioning for its service, which, in addition to market-share shifts to Southwest from the industry’s capacity reduction, should provide ample growth prospects. The chance to add aircraft at bargain prices could open the door for Southwest to augment its growth by becoming more of a contender in markets for long-haul flights, which account for only 15% of the routes in its system now. Southwest could shift its short-haul strategy to enter long-haul markets more aggressively. The airline may be a viable competitor to high-cost carriers in specific markets.

Internet Site

Southwest.com is one of the world’s busiest travel sites on the Web. The airline has added features for rental-car and hotel reservations to its Internet site, and plans more additions.

Productivity Advantage

Southwest derives its cost advantage from productivity and not labor-rate advantages. Southwest will need to continue to pay a market wage, but that it should be more successful than other carriers in achieving productivity gains to offset any increases. Therefore, the cost gap between Southwest and the rest of the industry could grow if airline consolidation continues.

Personnel Needs

Southwest employees more than ,000 employees throughout their system. Last year alone, Southwest reviewed 14,81 resumes, which resulted in 6,406 new hire employees in 001. Successful candidates must be an altruistic, outgoing person who likes to serve others and enjoys working with a team, we want you. If youre the kind of person who enjoys a more secure, more regimented, more inflexible, more rule-governed type of environment, that doesnt mean that youre a bad person, you are not compatible with Southwest’s personnel needs. Southwest has not had contested labor negotiations, which have occurred in most of the Airline industry. Agreements on new contracts should be reached more easily, as about 100,000 workers in the industry have been furloughed because of travel slump; Southwest has remained steadfast in not laying off any employees. Though Southwest appears mindful of gains by labor at other carriers, its pilots’ fortunes, i.e. stock options, have soared with the airline. Its pilots also are free to realize gains when options vest, rather than wait for retirement.

Key Investment Risks

Southwest’s operations make the carrier more appealing to the leisure traveler than the business traveler. In economic downturns, leisure travelers may reduce or eliminate discretionary travel.

Safety Concerns and Costs

Airlines face additional costs for new security procedures in the industry. New rules on luggage require all checked bags and their owners to be aboard each plane to get clearance. Also, starting in December 00, airlines must screen all luggage, which will require expensive new detection machines, installation of which also necessitate costly renovations at airports.

Increased Competition

In some markets, Southwest faces low-fare, low-cost airline alternatives. And other low-cost operators, JetBlue, have entered long-haul markets profitably. Southwest also is subject to competition form surface transportation, i.e. cars, trains, owing to the carriers short-haul routes.

Lack of Alliances with Other Airlines

These alliances provide passengers from other airlines to complete itineraries.

Financial Statistics (money.com)

Southwest Airlines Co. Both lists contain certain occupations and businesses that require certain skills such as a barber, plumber and an apothecary. Those jobs would require the knowledge to perform such trades and so the people living in Fore Street must have had the education to learn such skills.

Source Q is a plan of Hatfield in 1780. On the map it shows Fore Street and lists the names of businesses and trades which run along the road. Again there is a lot of skilled workers and some businesses, which would only have customers that were fortunate enough to use the trades and services. For instance there is a surgeon and a wigmaker living in the street these sort of people offered there services to only those that could afford it showing that there must have been wealthy people living in Fore Street at the time or such services wouldn’t have been available as they would not be able to earn a profit.

Source M is a Pigot’s Trade Directory from 1855. It lists all of the trades and businesses that were in Fore Street at the time. We can see again that there is the common pattern of skilled workers even as time goes on. For instance the tailor requires great skill in making good quality clothes for the rich showing there was a high status in Fore Street.

Source I is an extract from the 1871 census concerning Fore Street. As time has progressed we can see now that Fore Street is beginning to have important people living there such as landowners who of course must have the wealth in order to own the land and so this adds towards the fact that Fore Street seemed to have a higher status than other places.

Custom Essays on trades history

Source R is a plan of Hatfield in 101. We can see it has great similarities in its trades with Source Q. And so over a period of time from 1780-101 we can see that it still has the same workers. But there’s is a slight change in the fact that in 101 there is no surgeon or wigmaker living in the street unlike in source Q and there are a lot more pubs as time progressed. And so each of these sources proves overall that Fore Street was above average and did change over a period of time.

Please note that this sample paper on trades history is for your review only. The term, in the way I am going to be using it, “technological determinist” means; A point of view that a person has that has been derived from a technology perspective. However, the interpretation of this is a person who believes that we have come to a point in time where the technology or the utilisation of technology has shaped society.

Technology changed society?

The Car Industry

Take the manufacturing of cars as an example. In the past, when the mass production of cars came into existence, the work was all manual labour and there wasn’t much mechanised equipment back in those days. Not much later robotics was introduced into the car manufacturing industry, which was what the industry needed.

Write your How IT has changed society and how society has changed technology? research paper

Now days the car manufacturing industry is at its peak. The car industry has changed beyond recognition, yet there is still a human factor involved. Since the robots have been introduced a lot of good has come from them. One would be that production line only needs to employ a certain amount of people so the cost of production is low. The price of cars is relatively cheaper.

From a technological determinist’s point of view, the society has been shaped by the introduction of this technology. One way of looking at it would be that with the introduction of this technology society has gained a lot of ground with the means of transportation. We cannot live without having a means of travel in this day and age; it’s a necessity.

Society changed technology?

Mobile Phones

From a Marxist’s point of view you would argue that no, its not technology that has changed society but its society that has changed the shape of technology. A good example of this would be mobile phones. As we have seen past trends, if the demand is there then the products will follow suite.

As you are well aware that when the mobile phones were first introduced the phones were bulky, heavy and notoriously unpopular because of their size, appearance the kind of ringtones. However, because the public has had such a high demand of mobile technology the technology itself has changed dramatically during the past five to six years.

As the demand for mobiles is still growing the manufacturers are increasing pressure to provide better-equipped handsets that can cope with the increasing demand for information on the move. Thus the Marxist theory comes into practice where by you have the notion that society indeed has shaped the technology is and the way it’s manufactured.

Technology changed society?

PC’s

The introduction of the PC’s has changed the way we work, play, and communicate. If you look back to the way we used to communicate you’ll notice that the way we communicate now is not all that different from say twenty to thirty ago. In the past we had telephone’s a verbal means of communicating and the postal service, which although written and indirect was and is still a good means of communication.

The way we go about communicating with others is in essence pretty much the but with key developments that enable us to have real-time conversations with others. Who maybe miles away or just round the corner. Programs such as msn-messenger, Trillan and many others have enabled us to have these real-time conversations.

In business, the use of computers and information systems has progressed on to the next level; where by some computer’s function as expert systems, or knowledge based systems. If the computers were to be removed from some firms will be crippled and unable to function in the business world. A technological determinist’s view of this situation would suggest that indeed, the introduction of computer technology has shaped society in some sense. A Marxist point of view would argue that, because there was a demand for a new and easier way to do business and to communicate technology has had a logical progression.

Society changed technology?

Car Navigation and Traffic Reports

The development of these two technologies has been gradual to say the least. Society has changed some technology to better serve its needs. At first glance you think that how have these two technologies been changed and shaped by technology? Well its all quite straight forward, some people cannot read a map so the navigation system was developed for them. However, the system can be used by those individuals who can read maps.

It makes it a good invention and it’s easy to understand. While the traffic system has been incorporated into some radio / cassette but not all. These two technologies have profound impacts however; not everyone is so forefront and is willing to spend money on these added extras. A good idea that has not really taken off the ground.

A Marxist view on this would be that indeed society has shaped technology, however, even though they have shaped it, what would be the point if they do not make use of this technology? A technological determinist’s view on this would be that maybe the society did not give birth to the technology but the technology shaped a small part of society.

In conclusion I have found that though many technologies have been born from society there is evidence that some technology have shaped the society at large. I feel that in the age we live in it is difficult to know which technology has shaped socieey and which has been shaped by society.

I feel that there is no clear way in which I can agree with the technological deterministic or a Marxist view. There are points to both of these argeuments that state there is truth in both viewpoints.

Please note that this sample paper on How IT has changed society and how society has changed technology? is for your review only. The forty years that he lived were marked by death, severe depression, and insanity; themes that are recurrent in much of his poetry. Poe’s terrible life has an obvious influence on the atmosphere of impending doom that Poe creates in the poem The Raven.

One of the literary techniques that Poe makes use of in The Raven is diction. The mood and tone of the poem progress through Poe’s skillful use of alliteration and word choice. Poe begins the poem at a sad, somewhat tired pace with alliteration such as “nodded, nearly napping,” and “silken, sad, uncertain.” The pace of the poem quickens with the appearance of the “ghastly grim” raven who is “followed fast” by disaster. These two examples of clever alliteration show how the mood has changed from sad into frightening and how the tone has changed from slow and uncertain into fast and alarming. The mood continues to become more doom laden as the poem progresses and the speaker becomes more and more aware of the raven’s “horror haunted” purpose. The tone as well continues to quicken as the air grows “denser, perfumed from an unseen censer Swung by seraphim whose foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor.” This quote uses alliteration and skillful word choice as well as imagery to create an atmosphere of impending doom through the mood and tone.

Poe uses the literary technique of imagery in his poem to create an atmosphere of imminent doom. There is no progression with Poe’s imagery as there is with his alliteration and word choice, but rather there is an equal sense of doom throughout the poem. One of the first images that Poe creates is that of a “dying ember [that] wrought[s] its ghost upon the floor.” This image of the dying ember that makes the shape of a ghost on the floor foreshadows the death of the speaker at the end of the poem when his “soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor Shall be lifted nevermore!” The image of the “stately raven” “with mien of lord or lady” is one of a calm and composed “ebony bird” brings to mind the being death. Death is portrayed as an unruffled, stately being with an air of importance as is the raven. There is enough evidence through imagery alone in the poem to prove that the raven is a symbol of death. Another image that corresponds directly with the theme of impending doom is the image of “the air [growing] denser.” Air becoming denser is often a symptom of forthcoming doom in literature. The images that Poe skillfully includes in his poem help to create an atmosphere of imminent doom.

Custom Essays on The Atmosphere of Doom in The Raven

Poe makes use of the formal elements of poetry; rhyme, repetition, and meter in his poem to create an atmosphere of approaching doom. The rhyme scheme of this poem is ABCBBB, this ongoing rhyming of the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth lines creates a rhythm and continuity that leads the speaker onward towards the end of the poem where doom is looming. The second, fourth, fifth, and sixth lines in the first stanza rhyme with their equivalent lines in the following stanzas as well as with each other. For example, in the first stanza lore, door, door, and more correspond respectively with floor, Lenore, Lenore, and evermore of the second stanza. Again, this repetition of the same rhyme scheme and the same continuing rhyme creates rhythm and continuity that leads the reader closer and closer to idea of doom. The repetition of the last words of the fourth and fifth lines of each stanza also contributes to the progression of the atmosphere of the poem. The repetition of words creates a sense of urgency in the poem that causes the reader to read quicker and with a heightened sense of pressure.

Poe’s use of the literary techniques diction, imagery, and form in his poem The Raven help to create an atmosphere of impending doom. All of these literary devices help to create an atmosphere of foreboding that culminates in the death of the speaker. Poe uses alliteration and word choice to show the progress of the mood and tone of the poem which presents an atmosphere of doom to the reader. Poe uses imagery to create a representation of death and of imminent doom. Poe makes use of the formal elements of poetry with his rhyme scheme, meter, and repetition contributing to an atmosphere of doom. Through literary devices Edgar Allan Poe was able to convey an atmosphere of imminent doom in his poem The Raven.

Please note that this sample paper on The Atmosphere of Doom in The Raven is for your review only. The allied forces were facing the Germans at the English Channel, and were planning a full-scale invasion of Western Europe, but the time was not right to do it, so they decided to raid the port in Dieppe, France.

The main reason for the raid was to take the German’s attention away from Western Europe, and make them focus more on what was happening in England and try to con them into putting more men at the Channel. This would also give them an opportunity to use new types of weaponry and different techniques they may be able to use on the opponents from Germany. The weather was tough in Dieppe for the month of July, so there were plans to not even attempt the raid on Dieppe, but they did.

On August 1, 14, the allies raided Dieppe, led by the Canadians as the main unit. The attack involved 6,100 troops, and roughly 5,000 of those troops were Canadian. The rest of the troops in the raid were either American or British.

The raid involved 8 allied destroyers, and 74 air squadrons. There was roughly 16 kilometers of beach along the port of Dieppe, and there were 4 attacks taking place on the beach and one raid, taking place on the actual town of Dieppe. Each force was assigned a place to attack, which included Pourville, Puys, Berneval, and Varengeville.

Order Custom Essay on Dieppe

While troops were going towards the eastern coast, they encountered a small German convoy that alerted the German defenses that were on the water. That was not the least of their problems, as they were going through the narrow beaches of Puys, there tactic of getting there was surprise, and darkness; yet neither of them worked. As they were delayed getting upon the shore, they encountered daylight, and the German machine guns had clear fire. Only a few troops were actually able to get over the seawall, but there were to few to do any damage. The rest of the troops were pinned down on the beaches, shooting at machine guns, and were forced to surrender. Of all the troops that landed, 00 had died on the beach and 0 later died of severe wounds. This was the worst one day total of deaths that the Canadians had encountered throughout the war so far. This failure to clear the eastern part of the beach allowed the Germans to invalidate the main attack.

Meanwhile some surprise was achieved on the western coast as they went in according to plan and destroyed the guns in the battery near Varengeville, and got out safely.

At Pourville there was a good degree of surprise as the contingent faced light competition on the beaches, but the competition became harder as they advanced three kilometers before they were forced to halt. While withdrawing from their mission and going back, many were killed or wounded, but because of their courage, many of the troops got back safely and reunited. But the same was not to be said for the rearguard, as it was decimated and were forced to surrender because they ran out of ammunition.

Half an hour after these smaller missions, there was the main assault, which was to get into the town of Dieppe. There was heavy assault from the German machine guns that were placed atop the cliffs. One group got through and over the seawall, and to the town, but there was a false message sent to the ships saying that they were dying, so they sent more people in that got pinned down with intense German machine gun fire. With the raid, came along a tremendous air battle, which had left the allies down 106 aircrafts, all in one day.

This begs the question, was the raid necessary as a stepping-stone in the war, for the years to come or useless. Some argue that without this D-Day would not have been a success, others argue that it was a useless bloodbath, where many lost their lives. Of the 5,000 Canadians who left for the raid, only ,10 returned, and many of these men were wounded. There were ,67 casualties, including 1,46 prisoners of war; 07 Canadians lost their lives in the Dieppe raid. That leaves the question for each and every individual to think about. Was the Dieppe Raid, worth the casualties?

Please note that this sample paper on Dieppe is for your review only. This perspective is the exact opposite of the idealistic view in which conflicts are resolvable by peaceful means and all people are naturally sympathetic with one another.

In this view, evil persons create conflicts and seek to defeat the forces of truth, justice, and ‘the American Way’. World politics is fundamentally a struggle between evil states and good states. Tension in the world is created by evil states that seek to gain at the expense of weaker nations.

Wars do not start because of the situation in which states find themselves, but rather because of the aggressive intentions of evil states or leaders.

These two views suggest either that the natural order of humanity is harmonious, or that history is a conflict between the forces of light and those of darkness. These contrasting interpretations are necessitated by the fact that there is no automatic order in the international system. In domestic politics, there are legal norms that are enforceable on individuals. In world politics, however, no one rules over the states.

Please note that this sample paper on World Of Affairs is for your review only.
