I choose the horse cause it’s symbolizes my strength , spirit and heart. I see

myself as a very friendly person. I don’t fight but yet I am not a coward. I also

choose the horse it also represents freedom. Freedom is really important in my life.

So many people lives in a country with limited freedom unlike in Canada where we

have many rights and privileges. I never take freedom for granted, I know it’s hard

to live life without freedom.

If I was going to have a tattoo, I would be placing it on my shoulder where

it’s not too exposed or too hidden. I don’t see tattoo makes you attractive or

impressive. It just gives people who wears them they are tough and “cool”. It is also

looks unproffesional and draws too much attention which is distracting.

Assignment #

Part A

1) The term “sex” is used to define the biological differences between the male and the female. There are differences in chromosomes between both sexes. The female carries two X chromosomes, where the male carries an X and Y chromosome. When describing sex differences, one would pay attention to the dominating hormones in the female and male. The most commonly known sex differences are the physical traits. Females have breasts, a clitoris and a vagina. Males are equipped with testies, a scrotum and a penis.

The term “gender” is used to describe the differences between males and females based on cultural influences. “Gender” refers to the social and cultural expectations, based on biological differences. Females are seen as caring, sensitive, nurturing and emotional, whereas males are seen as tough, assertive, independent, and ambitious. Society plays a huge role on the way males and females are seen and how their actions are interpreted.

livepaperhelp.com

The case from (Money and Tucker 175) in the “society in Question” by Peter J. Brym, shows how sex by assignment outweighs biological factors in determining gender identity. It is very important to distinguish between “gender” and “sex” differences because both are unrelated to each other.

) The play stage of socialization refers to the stage in childhood were the child begins to act out the role of another person within a society. The child will often take the role of an adult figure whether it is a parent or some individual outside the family.

The game stage is when the child realizes that there are rules and expectations that influence the way people behave. In turn the child uses norms and rules to evaluate their own thoughts and behavior. Instead of only role-playing, the child enforces rules to govern the micro society that they developed in the play stage. This is the foundation of primary socialization.

) According to Mead the personality of society consists of two components “I”, the inner ego and “me”, the understanding of the expectations of society. “I”, is the unique inner self that has the capacity not to conform. “Me”, on the other hand is the society within an individual that governs their actions and beliefs. “I”, is the micro outlook on socialization. One would look at the individual as having the capacity to choose a unique role of behavior, “Me”, is the “macro” point of view, the external expectations of society influence personal behavior.

4) The traits of individuals in different kinds of societies are different. There are two types of societies the traditional “sable” society and the modern “changing” society. Japan was used as an example of a traditional society. According to Slater, traditional societies stress external controls; impulses, desires and beliefs are controlled by society. Individuals of such societies are dependent upon the community. In modern societies like the USA, the individuals rely on internal controls rather then on external. Traits such as competitiveness, and independence are encouraged. The individual rather than the community determines decisions and impulses.

The Venus of Milo, the leopard, and the Rodinfs Thinker-these are the statuettes mentioned in Goldingfs grading of thinking. His arrangement of statuettes changed three times in the essay, and they describe his changed attitudes toward thinking very well.

Goldingfs first interpretation of the statuettes illustrates his total ignorance. He didnft even know the names and meaning of them. At the same time, that he had no idea of what thinking was is well represented by the fact that the arrangement of statuettes was made by the headmaster, not Golding, in contrast to the other two. He did not think, just given the disposition and sermons, feeling or thinking nothing about them. He could not understand anything, looking only the surface of statuettes and othersf behavior. At this stage, he was worse than a third-grade thinker. Here, it is symbolized that he was not prepared to think.

Then, Golding gradually came to speculate everything that wass told, meanly, what was believed to be gthoughth, that is, grade-three thinking. Grade-three thinkers say what sounds very true, but what indeed contains gunconscious prejudice, ignorance and hypocrisy.h He saw everything with scornful eyes, finding incoherence in othersf actions. He made fun out of what others believed is serious, as is expressed in the allocation of statuettes. By making Thinker stand in the place where it looked down the sexy Venus, it is represented that grade-two thinking is as fun as peeking womenfs naked bodies. Also, that he did not mention the leopard means that at the time, he did not notice the harm grade-two thinking did yet. However, grade-two thinking is almost good-for-nothing. Although grade-two thinkers can detect hidden paradox of virtual statements, they only criticize others and they themselves do not think at all. Condemning is itself satisfying and we indulge ourselves in it without thinking gcreativelyh.

Finally, discovering this contradiction in himself, Golding moved toward grade-one thinking. Grade-two thinking ends with the question gwhat is truth?h which means that there is no truth. In contrast, grade-one thinkers start thinking with that question. The last rearrangement of statuettes expresses his notion that Thinker, who seems to be thinking very seriously, is actually a grade-three thinker who just feels, or possibly a grade-two thinker and that behind those ways of thinking hides a leopard, dangerous poison to onefs thinking, gthe nature of what is commonly called thoughth and gthe compulsive hand of natureh- ignorance, prejudice, and hypocrisy.

The mission Statement for Southwest Airlines is The dedication to the highest quality of customer Service delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and company spirit. We will address the following questions about Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines

How does Southwest position itself as a “different” kind of airline? How does

Not assigning seats contribute to the southwest difference?

More than 0 years ago, Rollin King and Herb Kelleher got together and decided to start a different kind of airline. They began with one simple notion If you get you passengers to their destinations when they want to get there, on time, at the lowest possible fares, and make sure they have a good time doing it, people will fly your airline, and they were right. Southwest is not a nationwide air carrier with 85 percent of its flights under 500 miles. Its success is due to its key values developed by Kelleher and carried out daily bye it’s 5,000 employees. The airlines key values include Humor, altruism, and “luv.” Unlike other airlines southwest does not assign seats or sell tickets this allows the airplane to turn quicker at the gate, in this respect, you can have the plane fly more routes each day. It creates more revenue, thus they can offer lower fares. Because southwest uses on-line ticket selling for their airline it offers the consumer easier access and it is low cost for the company. It cost twice as less to sell their tickets through the Internet then it does going through an agent or travel agencies. Anyone may easily get on-line and purchase tickets for a cheap price and it is also cost efficient for the company.

Southwest Airlines 4

How has Southwest used the word “Love” as a promotional tool? What

Does the word “Love” have to doe with the history if the airline?

Love was also incorporated into the airlines every place possible. Love was used in advertising, a red heart was in the logo, and flight attendants served love bites (peanuts).

Southwest even acquired LUV as the airlines symbol on the NYSE. Doing things different from other airlines didnt stop with LUV, for example The famous ten-minute turnaround, Southwests signature, was born out of desperation in 17. Southwest had purchased a fourth aircraft to take charters and also to be used on the regular routes. The first ads, in which the word love appeared up to 18 times, announced, There is someone up there who loves you. The home base of Southwest is, of course, Love Field in Texas.

What does Southwest mean when it promotes itself as a “Triple Crown Winner”

How has southwest used its rewards to advertise itself as different from other airlines?

Winning the industrys Triple Crown for best on-time record; fewest mishandled bags; lowest ratio of customer complaints. Crown for a month - Best On-time Record, Best Baggage Handling, and Fewest Customer Complaints. Since then, theyve won it thirty-one times, as well as five annual Triple Crowns for 1, 1, 14, 15, and 16. They have been an airline whose has led to the advancement of the commercial airline industry. They were the first airline with a frequent flyer program to give credit for the number of trips taken and not the number of miles flown. They have pioneered senior discounts, Fun Fares, Fun Packs, a same-day air freight delivery service, ticketless travel, and many other unique programs.

Southwest Airlines 5

What innovations has southwest come up with that have both made the airline

Stand out among its competitors and contributed to the advancement

Of the commercial airline industry?

Southwest was the first airline to establish a home page on the Internet. Initially, five Employees comprised Southwests web site development team, and the site took about nine months to create. Now there are more than 60 fulltime Employees on the airlines interactive marketing team, with about half of them working on the software development team. They also are the first airline with a frequent flyer program to give credit for the number of trips taken and not the number of miles flown. We also pioneered senior discounts, Fun Fares, Fun Packs, a same-day air freight delivery service, ticketless travel, and many other unique programs.

Southwest Airlines has been one of the top ten companies in the United States for quite a while. Their dedication to customer and employee happiness has made them one of the most prestigious organizations today. September 11th was a major set-back for numerous companies, southwest included, creating a need to look towards different ways and interventions to improve the company during this time of airline crisis? They have dealt with the disaster by implementing a new look for their company like their new logo, and techno structural interventions for reorganizing different aspects of the company. They have created the new Vice President of Safety, Security, and Flight Dispatch, used new TQM strategies for employee satisfaction, and is exploring technology upgrades for the check-in process.

Southwest Airlines 6

Although the September 11th flights caused some companies to have to shut down I do not see southwest as being one of them. They have already taken steps to ensure the future growth of the company and I believe the future will be bright rather then dismal.

Theres been a great deal of debate about this movie as it deals with the fat issue and has been accused of being offensive and politically incorrect.

If you havent already heard Jack Black plays Hal, who promised his father on his deathbed that hed only date pretty, slim women.

Hal has kept true to his word and is the shallowest chap around - until he meets self-help guru Anthony Robbins (played by himself) in an elevator, where Robbins hypnotises him into see the inner beauty in people, rather than concentrating on their looks.

So, hypnotised Hal then falls in love with Rosemary (Paltrow), an obese woman who, in Hals eyes is the tastiest bird on the block.

live paper help

But when the hypnosis starts to wear off Hal has to decide whether he loves Rosemary because of who she is or the way (he thinks) she looks.

There are oodles of human issues to explore here and, fair dos to the Farrellys they try to delve into the ideas of love, materialism, media images and the superficiality of the modern world.

Indeed, in some rare moments of humanity we really get to see Rosemarys point of view, and how her life has been negatively affected by her weight.

But the brothers dont go far enough and pepper the tale with fatty jokes and rude innuendos that will make more sensitive members of the audience wince in embarrassment.

In society overweight people are vilified and ignored - and everyone thinks they just eat mountains of chocolate and cakes because they want to - but in reality many obese people (and were dealing with obesity in Shallow Hal, not someone whos a couple of pounds overweight) have psychological problems and anyone whos battled with their weight will know how hard it is and how desperate it can be.

So, a film that pokes fun at someone who has what is essentially a mental health problem rates very low in my book.

Add to this the fact that Hal himself is played by the dumpy, mono-browed Black, who is no oil painting himself, and none of the characters tease Rosemary for going out with him, then you open yet another can of worms about male and female issues.

Its easy to bang on about the morality of this movie. In short some will enjoy it, some wont, but let me give you something to think about.

If this film was about a man whod been hypnotised to see the inner beauty in someone and falls in love with an anorexic, and his pals make loads of jokes about her - would you want to see it?

• A Psychologist can hypnotize any body with a piercing look.

No. Never! Psychologists who are trained in hypnosis or hypnotherapy can hypnotize others if the patient/client is totally willing and cooperative. A mere study of Psychology will not equip a person to hypnotize any body.

• If one can hypnotize a person you can make him do any thing.

Sorry, never. Even under deep hypnosis a hypnotized person will not obey if he is asked to perform unethical actions.

At the beginning should be chosen a form of business (such as a sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation), and register the business name, if the business has a name other than your own. Also it is necessary a business license, depending on the type of business youre running. And the business has to be run according to provincial and federal laws, which mean that should be registered. These things have to be done no matter where the business is located, so lets take a look at factors specific to home-based businesses that need to be considered before a room of the home can be turned into an office and start selling the products or services.

Before the start a home-based business you need to consider the suitability of the neighborhood and house.

Zoning - Is the neighborhood zoned for home-based businesses? If its not, the city will catch up with you or a neighbor complains. Many municipalities dont allow home-based businesses at all, and others place severe restrictions upon exactly what kind of business is allowed to operate out of a family dwelling in a residential neighborhood. Check the zoning bylaws with your municipality.

Neighborhood suitability - How will the proposed business fit into the neighborhood? Most residential neighbors are not going to be very happy if there is noisy machinery running all day long, large trucks starting up early in the morning, or customers parking their vehicles all over the place. If the proposed business involves manufacturing, or trucks or other vehicles arriving at or leaving the property on a regular basis, the business should not be operating in a residential area. Unhappy neighbors can be bad for business in all kinds of ways.

Neighborhood location - Will the neighborhood’s location work for or against the business? If youre delivering a product or service, it probably wont matter if youre located 15 km out of town down an obscure country road (except for the extra travel cost you incur). But if the business involves people coming to you, then they need to be able to find it and get there easily. In many cases, you wont be able to put up any signage, although in others you will be able to have a small, unobtrusive sign by or on your door.

Propertys location and appearance - Your property does have to be attractive enough that it wont scare off prospective customers or clients. Old cars cluttering the yard, knee-high grass, are turn-offs that can lose you business. A poorly maintained house and property gives people the impression you dont look after things - so why would you look after them? If youre going to run your business out of your home, your home has to look neat and respectable - at all times!

Houses suitability - If the only space in the home you can devote to the business is the kitchen or a corner of your basement, dont, unless the business is virtual and no one is ever, ever going to see the premises. People who visit the business will expect it to look (and operate) like a real business. They expect to be able to do things such as sit down and sign papers in a business-like environment. Any home-based business will need to have an entire room set aside as an office space.

Some HBBs will need even more space. For instance, if you consult with clients, youll need an actual consulting room separate from your office. If the business involves creating arts or crafts, or manufacturing, it is needed a suitable studio or shop. If youre in this position, and you dont have these already, it may be easier and cheaper to find suitable quarters for the business elsewhere then try to renovate the home to accommodate the business plans.

It is also important to consider if the family and the work style will support operating a home-based business.

The family The owner it is not the only one involved if a home-based business starts; the whole family will be involved in the enterprise, for good or ill. Should be also considered how running a business out of the home will affect the family.

While many people start a home-based business thinking that theyll be able to spend more time with their family than they would otherwise, the lack of separation between your business and personal life can seriously interfere with family activities. How will you keep your family life and your work life separate and how much time can you realistically devote to both?

Also we have to consider everyones expectations. Will you expect your family members to pitch in and help with your business? How will your family members feel about this? Discuss your plans and expectations with your family first, and find out whether or not theyre prepared to actively support your business.

The work style - As much as everyone likes to fantasize about it, working from home isnt for everyone. Before the start of a home-based business, we need to think about the personality and the work preferences. The three main problems of working from home are

§ isolation and lack of contact with colleagues. Many people have difficulty coping with working alone for long stretches of time. This is especially difficult for those who are used to working in busy office environments and being surrounded by people.

§ increased family stress, with the difficulty of separating business and home life. If you thought bringing a new pet into your home was stressful, wait until you start a home-based business!

§ need for self-discipline and the ability to plan and manage ones own time. On the one hand, being your own boss means that no one else is telling you what to do. On the other, if you dont keep yourself focused and on task, no one else will.

How will you handle these potential problems? Thinking about the work style and devising strategies to deal with these potential problems of working from home ahead of time can make all the difference when faced with actually doing it.

The personality is also a determining factor in whether or not you should start a home-based business. While many people start home-based businesses because they see it as a natural extension of the hobbies they love, having a hobby is not the key to running a successful business.

Are you entrepreneurial? Do you have the qualities an entrepreneur needs to have to be a success? Research shows that successful entrepreneurs share certain traits and attitudes, such as perseverance, the desire and willingness to take the initiative, competitiveness, self-reliance, a strong need to achieve, and self-confidence.

Number 1 on the list of the personality traits needed to be a successful entrepreneur is determination. Enthusiasm is a great quality, but it wont get you far if you dont have the determination to put your plans into action.

In fact, there are so many adjectives starting with the letter D that are associated with the attitudes shared by successful business people, that it is known as the phrase “type D Personality” to summarize them. Besides determination, you need drive, discipline, and desire. You also need to be adaptable and flexible; each day will bring new challenges you may or may not have planned to meet, and often, a multitude of tasks that all seem to need to be done at once!

Deciding to run a home-based business isnt a snap decision. But if you do decide to locate your business in your home, it can be the most satisfying, exhilarating thing youve ever done. And know that youre not alone. Thousands of others small business people are doing exactly the same thing - and succeeding.

Cyrano de Bergerac, known for his wit, great courage, and large nose, lived in Paris, France during the 17th century. This was a time filled with eloquence, war, and poets. Cyrano spoke with much eloquence, he was the Achilles of the Gascons, and brought tears to the eyes of those who read his poems of love. He had but one flaw, his nose. His nose became the bane of his existence.

Cyrano was also known for his witty retorts. As a result of his remarks, he was challenged to many duels. He was able to win the heart of his cousin, Magdeleine Robin, with his sweet words and beautiful poems. Cyrano never backed down from a challenge and lived his life the way he wanted to. “He lives without compromise, free in both his thoughts and his acts.” (Act V, 5). Cyrano was intrigued by De Guiche’s offer of having Cardinal Richelieu as his patron. Outraged when informed that Cardinal Richelieu would change a few lines in one of his plays, he quickly responded by telling De Guiche, the man asking Cyrano to take Richelieu as his patron, “my blood curdles at the thought of having a single comma changed.” (Act II, 488)

When the Gascons where needed to help save some French at the town of Arras, Cyrano was delighted. He loved battle and was great with a sword. When they became

surrounded by the Spanish, Cyrano was still able to sneak by the Spanish and deliver letters to the love of his life. While all of the cadets in Carbon De Castel-Jaloux’s regiment were complaining of starvation, he kept going, fighting on, and writing his letters. When the time came to fight the enemy that had them outnumbered, Cyrano was again ready. He became a leader while on the battlefield. His tactical experience and knowledge helped him to finish the war with his life and mind intact.

Cyrano’s only flaw was his appearance. His nose was abnormally large. People would look at it funny and he would become enraged and start a duel. One example occurs when Cyrano goes to the theater. He earlier had instructed one of the actors not to perform. When the actor does, and goes against Cyrano’s instructions, Cyrano interrupts the play and refunds everyone’s money with his own. One of the many viewers, a viscount named Valvert, decides that Cyrano had no right to do what he did so he in turn, made jokes about Cyrano’s nose. Cyrano listens quietly, waits for him to finish, and then tells Valvert how his insult was weak. He proceeds by giving a few examples of what he believes are good insults about his nose. After humiliating Valvert with words, he declares that he will duel Valvert and strike him after the last line of his poem that he will create during the heat of battle. Once again Cyrano displays his masterful skills as a poet.

Throughout the entire play Cyrano has hid his affection for Roxane for one reason, his nose. He was afraid that she would reject him and he would be heartbroken for life. Cyrano chose continue to live in poverty without love and without happiness, but only with pain and suffering. Even after the death of Roxane’s new husband and the knowledge that she was in love with his soul and even the ugliest face would attract her.

As the play came to an end, so did the life of Cyrano. After the war ended Cyrano started to live in poverty. He would visit his love, who did not know that he loved her, every week. He would give her the week’s news, and keep her company for the afternoon. Throughout his life, Cyrano knew how he wanted to die. “To be struck down by the only noble weapon, the sword, wielded by an adversary, worthy of me.” (Act V, 54) He later goes on to say, “life is a jester” because he could not even die the way he wanted to. He was struck with a falling log on his way to meet with Roxane. He shows his pride when he gets up and goes to talk with her right after this happens, not letting anything hinder him. In his last minutes of life, he fights all of his old enemies. His dying words were, “I still have my panache” (Act V, 57). This simply means he lived his life the way he wanted to, without compromise.

Censorship is Repression

Censorship is Repression

Is censorship the answer to the issues of hate propaganda within society? Do we shield our children’s eye to the harsh realities in life, and let them discover the shocking truths on their own? It can be nice to pretend that this is a world devoid of hate and perversions, but this is not reality. People have a right to be aware of the multifaceted society in which they are a part of if they choose to. Garry Wills presents the concept of censorship “In Praise of Censure” published in 18, by Times Magazine. He believes that censor may not be an issue that is subject to government enforcement, but it is up to society to enforce censorship. Although Will has stated his support for the first amendment, the freedom of speech, he also agrees with censorship within boundaries. It is an attack on the intelligence of society to censor expressions therefore limiting the choice for an individual to create their own personal boundaries. The bulk of society is capable of developing their own ideas and critical thoughts about the information and art that it chooses to expose itself to.

Mills has pointed the differences between freedom of speech and censorship by using the example Terry Rakolta’s interference with the sitcom Married with children influencing sponsors to withdraw support and the immediate firing of Jimmy the Greek from CBS because of racial comments. Mills points out that there was much more social pressure on Jimmy than Married with Children. Jimmy suggested that black people may be better at sports than other races because of their inherited strength from their ancestors being slaves in cotton fields. This remark may be considered an observation of the vigour of black people and where these strengths may have originated from. If mentioning the truth of African American people being slaves in history is considered a harmful statement then the issue is not of racism, but of the desire to ignore the unacceptable behaviour which occurred in the past. The television show Married with Children had an episode which showed frontal nudity. This episode in particular offended Terry Rakolta and led her pursuit to damage the production’s reputation, by influencing sponsors to withdraw. This backfired as the response from the media encouraged the public to take a greater interest in the show and the amount of viewers rose significantly.

Society accepted the display of frontal nudity, but not the right to speak freely of opinions of black people. Who is to decide which is more degrading, showing females in a manner which may be harmful to society or making comments which could be considered racist. Does any one person or group of people contain the knowledge which is superior to make these decisions? People cannot rightfully say what is right and wrong in the expressions of ideas, therefore the concept of censor is demeaning societies strength of character by proposing that the people cannot decide for themselves. This is the problem of censorship. Who holds the right to say what is valid censorship and what is not? Censorship is based upon protecting the societies morals. It cannot be assumed that the morals of one person will complement another’s.

livepaperhelp.com

The role or censorship should be placed in societies hands and not in the form of legislation argues Wills. The minorities of society often have little choice in these matters which leave it in control of the majority to scrutinize expressions of the public. Too often are matters of censor the decisions of those people who hold power and riches.

Wills uses a particular situation in which a photography exhibit by Robert Mapplethorpe which included some photos on the verge of kiddie pornography and sadomasochism was cancelled in order for the Corcoran Gallery to influence the government to continue it’s financial support. One is not expected to support that in which he/she disapproves and the choice to cancel the exhibit was the choice of the Corcoran Gallery. To naturally assume that the art will not be supported by the government shows how censor has repressed and placed limits on artistic expressions even though they may not be illegal.

Will’s arguments portray his opinion of the need for censorship, and also the need for allowing freedom of speech to a certain degree. Censoring a individual or group of individual’s silences their expressions and ideas. Censoring of any kind results in the repression of ideas, and also the repression of those individuals who may have benefited form the exposure to these ideas. The public must be aware of the society they live in. The expressions which may be considered harmful to the public must not be repressed but voiced and further evaluated, analyzed, and approached by each person who has a valid opinion of it. If one does not will to be exposed to those ideas in which they feel may be discriminatory or offensive, one can change the channel, not read the newspaper or magazine article and make the choice to not listen to a particular music group.

Democracy and the political belief system that is a part of modernity is based on choice. We choose our prime minister, we choose our jobs, we choose our exposure to the media. Why is it that our choices are limited by censorship? Do we want to remain ignorant to the issues and ideas of our fellow human beings? Is the choice of what is acceptable to be public knowledge only available to those who hold power? Censorship should be banned to further signify the importance of free and equal speech in the US constitution and to allow for the acceptance of opposing views and diverse morals.

Life And Times Of Langston Hughes

Langston Hughes was one of the most important writers and thinkers of the Harlem Renaissance, which was the African American artistic movement in the 10’s that celebrated black life and culture. Hughess creative genius was influenced by his life in Harlem, New York. His literary works helped shape American literature and politics. Hughes, like others active in the Harlem Renaissance, had a strong sense of racial pride. Through his poetry, novels, plays, essays, and childrens books, he promoted equality, condemned racism and injustice, and celebrated African American culture, humor, and spirituality.

James Langston Hughes was born February 1, 10 in Joplin, Missouri into an abolitionist family. He was the grandson of James Mercer Langston, the first African American to be elected to public office in 1855. His parents divorced when he was a small child and his father moved to Mexico. During this time, Hughes struggled with a sense of desolation fostered by parental neglect, and he recalled being driven early by his loneliness “to books, and the wonderful world in books.” (Life of Langston Hughes I, Too, Sing America) His grandmother raised him until he was twelve, when he moved to Lincoln, Illinois, to live with his mother and his stepfather, Homer Clark, eventually settling in Cleveland, Ohio. Hughes attended Central High School in Cleveland, Ohio, but began writing poetry in the eighth grade and was selected as Class Poet. Following graduation from high school in 10, Hughes spent a year in Mexico with his father and a year at Columbia University. His mother fumed about his departure, and his father offered him little warmth. Yet, with his unique gift for writing, Hughes turned the pain engendered by his parents conflict into the noted poem, The Negro Speaks of Rivers, published by Crisis in 11. (Life of Langston Hughes I Too, Sing America) His father did not think he would be able to make a living at writing, and encouraged him to pursue a more practical career. His father paid his tuition to Columbia University on the grounds he studied engineering. During these years, he held odd jobs as an assistant cook, launderer, and a busboy, and traveled to Africa and Europe working as a seaman. When funds for continuing college dried up, Hughes dropped out with a B+ average and moved to Harlem at the height of its golden era; all the while he continued writing poetry.

In 1, Hughes traveled abroad on a freighter to the Senegal, Nigeria, the Cameroons, Belgium Congo, Angola, and Guinea, and later to Italy, France, Russia and Spain. One of his favorite pastimes whether abroad or in Washington, D.C. or Harlem, New York was sitting in the clubs listening to blues, jazz and writing poetry. Through these experiences, a new rhythm emerged in his writing, and a series of poems such as The Weary Blues were penned. He returned to Harlem, in 14, during the period known as the Harlem Renaissance. At this time, Hughes’s work was frequently published and his writing flourished. It was 15 when Hughes moved to Washington, D.C., still spending more time in blues and jazz clubs. He said, I tried to write poems like the songs they sang on Seventh Street...[these songs] had the pulse beat of the people who keep on going. (Life of Langston Hughes I, Too, Sing America) At this same time, Hughes accepted a job with Dr. Carter G. Woodson, editor of the Journal of Negro Life and History and founder of Black History Week in 16. He returned to his beloved Harlem later that year. Langston Hughes returned to school in 16, this time to the historically black Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. He was supported by a patron of the arts, which was a wealthy white woman in her seventies named Charlotte Osgood Mason. Mason directed Hughess literary career, convincing him to write the novel Not Without Laughter; the two had a dispute in 10, however, and the relationship came to an end. At this point in Hughess life he turned to the political left and began to develop his interest in socialism.

Hughes’s poems, short plays, essays, and short stories began appearing in the NAACP publication Crisis Magazine and in Opportunity Magazine and other publications. One of Hughes finest essays appeared in the Nation in 16, entitled The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain. It spoke of Black writers and poets, who would surrender racial pride in the name of a false integration, where a talented Black writer would prefer to be considered a poet, not a Black poet, which to Hughes meant he subconsciously wanted to write like a white poet. Hughes argued, No great poet has ever been afraid of being himself. (Life of Langston Hughes, 10-141 I, Too, Sing America) He wrote in this essay, We younger Negro artists now intend to express our individual dark-skinned selves without fear or shame. If white people are pleased we are glad. If they are not, it does not matter. We know we are beautiful. And ugly too... If colored people are pleased we are glad. If they are not, their displeasure doesnt matter either. We build our temples for tomorrow, as strong as we know how and we stand on the top of the mountain, free within ourselves. (www.falcon.jmu.edu/~ramseyil/hughes.htm)

Among his many poems, The Negro Mother (11), The Dream Keeper (1), and Montage Of A Dream Deferred (151) argue passionately a belief in human equality, a wish for color-blind brotherhood, and a growing disillusionment with the American dream. Perhaps Hughes’s finest literary achievement came during World War II in the course of writing a weekly column in the Chicago Defender that began in 14 and lasted twenty years. The highlight of the column was an offbeat Harlem character called Jesse B. Semple, or Simple, and his exchanges with a staid narrator in a neighborhood bar, where Simple commented on a variety of matters but mainly about race and racism. Simple became Hughess most celebrated and beloved fictional creation, and the subject of five collections edited by Hughes, starting in 150 with Simple Speaks His Mind. (www.nytimes.com)

Hughes’s two volumes of autobiography together with his essay about his involvement with the National Association For The Advancement Of Colored People (N.A.A.C.P.) and the Civil Rights Movement, Fight For Freedom, chart Hughess long commitment to comradeship and equality. The first volume, The Big Sea, written in an episodic, lightly comic manner, made virtually no mention of his leftist sympathies, and I Wonder As I Wander written in 156 was Hughes’s much-admired second volume of autobiography. He became prosperous, although he always had to work hard for his measure of prosperity and sometimes called himself, with good cause, a “literary sharecropper.” (Life of Langston Hughes I, Too, Sing America)

The Simple books inspired a musical show, Simply Heavenly written in 157, which met with some success. However, Hughess Tambourines to Glory (16), a gospel musical play satirizing corruption in a black storefront church, failed badly, with some critics accusing him of creating cartoons of black life. Nevertheless, his love of gospel music led to other acclaimed stage efforts, usually mixing words, music, and dance in an atmosphere of improvisation. Notable here were the Christmas show Black Nativity (161) and, inspired by the civil rights movement, Jericho--Jim Crow (164). (www.falcon.jmu.edu/~ramseyil/hughes.htm)

Hughes, who claimed Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Carl Sandburg, and Walt Whitman as his primary influences, is particularly known for his insightful, colorful portrayals of black life in America from the twenties through the sixties. His life and work were enormously important in shaping the artistic contributions of the Harlem Renaissance of the nineteen twenties. Unlike other notable black poets of the period, such as Claude McKay, Jean Toomer, And Countee Cullen, Hughes refused to differentiate between his personal experience and the common experience of black America. He wanted to tell the stories of his people without personalizing them, so the reader could step in and draw his own conclusions.

Langston Hughes was a prolific writer. In the forty-one years between his first book in 16 and his death in 167, he devoted his life to writing and lecturing. He wrote sixteen books of poems, two novels, three collections of short stories, four volumes of editorial and documentary fiction, twenty plays, childrens poetry, musicals and operas, three autobiographies, a dozen radio and television scripts and dozens of magazine articles. In addition, he edited seven anthologies. Critically, Langston Hughes is one of the most abused poets in America. Serious white critics ignored him, and most black critics only reluctantly admired him. Critics have mistaken the simple form of language of Hughes’s poetry for shortage of meaning. His real meanings are never that apparent and, in order to understand his work fully, one must have deep insight into ghetto life and psychology and an emotional tie. (www.falcon.jmu.edu/~ramseyil/hughes.htm)

Brooks Atkinson, a writer for the New York Times, wrote “Langston Hughes has succeeded in giving us in Not Without Laughter an intimate picture of that type of Negro life which has been so popular with white writers in the recent decades.” (www.nytimes.com) Not Without Laughter really has no story at all; only characters. One of the most interesting aspects of the novel is the excellent contrast in characters that it affords. Temy and Mr. Siles versus Harriet and Jim Boy. The novel is very slow, even tedious, reading in its early chapters, but once it gains its momentum it moves as swiftly as a jazz rhythm. Its chapters, emerging ever more clearly and challenging as the novel proceeds, gives it this rhythm. Every character in the novel, with the exception of Mr. Siles and Temy, is a living challenge to our civilization, a challenge that is all the more effective because it springs naturally out of its materials and is not superimposed upon them. Another one of Hughes’s distinguished works is the play Shakespeare in Harlem.

Shakespeare in Harlem lasted only three-quarters of an hour or less in the theatre. From an academic point of view, it is hardly a play. However, the gracefulness of feeling it discloses, the idiomatic music of the lines and the immaculate taste of the performance endow it with thoughtful beauty. “Under Richard Glenn’s quiet direction, the play is presented as a sketch of Harlem scenes against a luminous background, with a subdued but stirring musical score by Margaret Bonds.” (www.americaslibrary.gov) The acting was marvelous and controlled in various moodsthe hearty good nature of Alma Hubbard; the touching, shining student by Calden Marsh; the massive, sulky blues man by John McCurry; the weary old man by Ted Butler. Hughes was unashamedly black at a time when blackness was dmod, and he did not go much beyond one of the earliest themes, black is beautiful. He had the wit and intelligence to explore the black human condition in a variety of depths, but his tastes and selectivity were not always accurate, and pressures to survive, as a black writer in a white society, and it was a miracle that he did for so long, extracted an enormous creative toll.

Langston Hughes died of caner on May , 167, in New York, NY. In his memory, his residence at 0 East 17th Street in Harlem, has been given landmark status by the New York City Preservation Commission, and his block of east 17th street was renamed “Langston Hughes Place.”

In many ways Hughes always remained loyal to the principles he had laid down for the younger black writers in 16. His art was firmly rooted in race pride and race feeling even as he cherished his freedom as an artist. He was both nationalist and international. As a radical democrat, he believed that art should be accessible to as many people as possible. He could sometimes be bitter, but his art is generally suffused by a keen sense of the ideal and by a profound love of humanity, especially black Americans. He was perhaps the most original of African American poets and, in the breadth and variety of his work, assuredly the most representative of African American writers.

A Dolls House is classified under the second phase of Henrik

Ibsens career. It was during this period which he made the transition

from mythical and historical dramas to plays dealing with social problems.

It was the first in a series investigating the tensions of family life.

Written during the Victorian era, the controversial play featuring a female

protagonist seeking individuality stirred up more controversy than any of

his other works. In contrast to many dramas of Scandinavia in that time

which depicted the role of women as the comforter, helper, and supporter of

man, A Dolls House introduced woman as having her own purposes and

goals. The heroine, Nora Helmer, progresses during the course of the play

eventually to realize that she must discontinue the role of a doll and seek

out her individuality.

David Thomas describes the initial image of Nora as that of a doll

wife who revels in the thought of luxuries that can now be afforded, who

is become with flirtation, and engages in childlike acts of disobedience

(5). This inferior role from which Nora progressed is extremely

important. Ibsen in his A Dolls House depicts the role of women as

subordinate in order to emphasize the need to reform their role in society.

Definite characteristics of the womens subordinate role in a

relationship are emphasized through Noras contradicting actions. Her

infatuation with luxuries such as expensive Christmas gifts contradicts her

resourcefulness in scrounging and buying cheap clothing; her defiance of

Torvald by eating forbidden Macaroons contradicts the submission of her

opinions, including the decision of which dance outfit to wear, to her

husband; and Noras flirtatious nature contradicts her devotion to her

husband. These occurrences emphasize the facets of a relationship in

which women play a dependent role finance, power, and love. Ibsen

attracts our attention to these examples to highlight the overall

subordinate role that a woman plays compared to that of her husband. The

two sides of Nora contrast each other greatly and accentuate the fact that

she is lacking in independence of will.

The mere fact that Noras well-intentioned action is considered

illegal reflects womans subordinate position in society; but it is her

actions that provide the insight to this position. It can be suggested

that women have the power to choose which rules to follow at home, but not

in the business world, thus again indicating her subordinateness. Nora

does not at first realize that the rules outside the household apply to

her. This is evident in Noras meeting with Krogstad regarding her

borrowed money. In her opinion it was no crime for a woman to do

everything possible to save her husbands life. She also believes that her

act will be overlooked because of her desperate situation. She fails to

see that the law does not take into account the motivation behind her

forgery. Marianne Sturman submits that this meeting with Krogstad was her

first confrontation with the reality of a lawful society and she deals

with it by attempting to distract herself with her Christmas decorations

(16). Thus her first encounter with rules outside of her dolls house

results in the realization of her naivety and inexperience with the real

world due to her subordinate role in society.

The character of Nora is not only important in describing to role

of women, but also in emphasizing the impact of this role on a woman.

Noras child-like manner, evident through her minor acts of disobedience

and lack of responsibility compiled with her lack of sophistication further

emphasize the subordinate role of woman. By the end of the play this is

evident as she eventually sees herself as an ignorant person, and unfit

mother, and essentially her husbands wife. Edmond Gosse highlights the

point that Her insipidity, her dollishness, come from the incessant

repression of her family life (71). Nora has been spoonfed everything

she has needed in life. Never having to think has caused her to become

dependent on others. This dependency has given way to subordinateness, one

that has grown into a social standing. Not only a position in society, but

a state of mind is created. When circumstances suddenly place Nora in a

responsible position, and demand from her a moral judgment, she has none to

give. She cannot possibly comprehend the severity of her decision to

borrow money illegally. Their supposed inferiority has created a class of

ignorant women who cannot take action let alone accept the consequences of

their actions.

A Dolls House is also a prediction of change from this

subordinate roll. According to Ibsen in his play, women will eventually

progress and understand her position. Bernard Shaw notes that when Noras

husband inadvertently deems her unfit in her role as a mother, she begins

to realize that her actions consisting of playing with her children happily

or dressing them nicely does not necessarily make her a suitable parent

(6). She needs to be more to her children than an empty figurehead.

From this point, when Torvald is making a speech about the effects of a

deceitful mother, until the final scene, Nora progressively confronts the

realities of the real world and realizes her subordinate position.

Although she is progressively understanding this position, she still clings

to the hope that her husband will come to her protection and defend her

from the outside world once her crime is out in the open. After she

reveals the dastardly deed to her husband, he becomes understandably

agitated; in his frustration he shares the outside world with her, the

ignorance of the serious business world, and destroys her innocence and

self-esteem. This disillusion marks the final destructive blow to her

dolls house. Their ideal home including their marriage and parenting has

been a fabrication for the sake of society. Noras decision to leave this

false life behind and discover for herself what is real is directly

symbolic of womans ultimate realization. Although she becomes aware of

her supposed subordinateness, it is not because of this that she has the

desire to take action. Nora is utterly confused, as suggested by Harold

Clurman, She is groping sadly in a maze of confused feeling toward a way

of life and a destiny of which she is most uncertain (56). The one thing

she is aware of is her ignorance, and her desire to go out into the world

is not to prove herself but to discover and educate herself. She must

strive to find her individuality.

That the perception of woman is inaccurate is also supported by the

role of Torvald. Woman is believed to be subordinate to the domineering

husband. Instead of being the strong supporter and protector of his

family, Noras husband is a mean and cowardly man. Worried about his

reputation he cares little about his wifes feelings and fails to notice

many of her needs. The popular impression of man is discarded in favor of

a more realistic view, thus illustrating societys distorted views.

Ibsen, through this controversial play, has an impact upon

societys view of the subordinate position of women. By describing this

role of woman, discussing its effects, and predicting a change in

contemporary views, he stressed the importance of womans realization of

this believed inferiority. Woman should no longer be seen as the shadow of

man, but a person in herself, with her own triumphs and tragedies. The

exploration of Nora reveals that she is dependant upon her husband and

displays no independent standing. Her progression of understanding

suggests womans future ability to comprehend their plight. Her state of

shocked awareness at the end of the play is representative of the awakening

of society to the changing view of the role of woman. A Dolls House

magnificently illustrates the need for and a prediction of this change.

I was signed up for the war a few weeks ago. I don’t really want to fight, but I don’t have much of a choice. Saddam Hussein has told us that the Americans are evil and against Allah. They’re very bad. I left home a few weeks before. I have my gun with me and for the past few days I have been living in a foxhole with Akbar, Ali and another Saddam. We’ve already been in combat, and I’ve seen people drop dead in front of me. It’s all the American’s though. My friends agree. They’re fighting a dirty war, using their planes to fire at us at night. I’m fairly scared, but I don’t want to go home without any honor.

Last night was a bad night. Two guards were found sleeping in the watchtower. We never get enough sleep. They bomb us at night and keep us awake. Anyway, they shot the two guards and made us watch. But you have to try and forget these things. It’s like what Ali says, “ You have to try to forget these things, and keep your wits about you.” But it’s hard to do sometimes.

We crossed the South West Bridge and made it to the border of Kuwait. We’ve had to dig new foxholes as well. It’s when your digging that you get the chance to talk to people and get to know them. We met up with Rez here. He’s a laugh. Always impersonates Akbar, who’s our corporal in charge. It’s really funny to watch. Make’s it easier. We stationed at the border and built more foxholes. Then we sit and wait to be attacked. It’s horrible.

Dr. Morris took me to the hospital today. Because of the spells I’ve been having. It’s all white and smelly. There is an old man in the bed next to me. He talked to me for a little while. He doesn’t get many visitors. Actually, he hasn’t had any visitors for a while. He was a nice bloke. He lets me call him Bob. He’s , and he can still ride a bike. He was a solider in the Great War. And he likes fishing. A lot. He hit his head in a bike accident, and he’s in here for observation, like me. I told him about the stuff that I’ve seen when Latif takes over. He seems to understand, but I don’t think he believes me.

Mum and dad and Tom came in that night. They bought me books to read. Mum talked to Bob for a while. She bought black grapes with them too, and Tom kept eating them in front of me to annoy me. But I don’t mind. It was good. Dad said he’d take me to the Museum on Saturday too. So I can’t wait to get out.

I woke up during the night that I woke up. I don’t know why, but then I realized what was happening. Latif was coming back, and I couldn’t fight it.

We were being attacked again. And this was a bad one. The Americans were flying overhead, bombing us, and I was sure I could catch bits of their English language now and then, and I realized they were on the ground too. I couldn’t move. I didn’t want to die. I wanted them to die. So I just curled up in my foxhole. I hid. Akbar was in the foxhole too. He said, “C’mon Latif, we have to get out there and help.” But I was frozen. So he went out by himself. I called out to him, but I don’t think he could hear me over the gunshots and blasts. I kept calling but he didn’t come back. Not for a long time. And I just stayed curled up in my foxhole, like a coward.

It was a few day’s after the air raid. They’ve moved me from the ward at the hospital. I’m in a nut house now. I haven’t been me for a while now. I’m stuck in Latif’s body, seeing what he sees. It’s weird. He’s on watch now, looking out for planes and soldiers.

I was still in the mental hospital when mum and dad stopped visiting. Tom still came though. I could see him, but I could still see everything in Kuwait as well. It was when Latif was asleep that I broke away from him and was actually able to have a conversation as me with Tom. I told him about how the guys in Kuwait treated Latif. Tom just didn’t quite seem to understand. He did, but I don’t think he wanted to believe it. I was only there for a while. Tom grabbed me and I think it woke Latif up, because I was dragged back to Kuwait.

We were being bombed. I hid in my shelter, the bombs exploding around me, and the gun blasts from the land war going off everywhere. I curled up in a ball and covered my ears. I was there for a while, when I felt like someone was hugging me even though there was no one there. I don’t know what it was, but I dint care. I snuggled up and felt slightly safer, even though I was alone.

It was later that day after the bombing that Latif became weaker and I could go back to being me. Tom was there, but I accidentally piddled on him so he had to get cleaned up. Rez and Ali had gone to get food and they didn’t come back. Everyone has been decapitated and blown up and we can’t bury them. It was just Latif, Akbar and me now, except I wasn’t really there.

It was just Akbar and me, Latif. He said to me, “We’re going to make a white flag and surrender when it gets light.” There was hardly anyone here. They were either dead or gone. I could still hear helicopters, but I couldn’t see them. Akbar told me about the camera’s they have that lets them see in the dark. It isn’t fair. I haven’t shot anyone down yet either. Akbar still has hope, but I know we are going to die.

It was shortly after that when Akbar died. A land mine went off right in front of him, and he just caught fire! I tried to roll him over on the floor, and put the fire out with my hands. But it didn’t work. Akbar died. I went to pick up my gun, but my hands were so badly burnt I couldn’t.

I woke up in the corner of a room, in what seemed like a hospital. Tom was there, and so was a doctor. His name was Dr. Rashid. He told me that I’d fallen off my bike and had a spell in hospital. Thay acted weird for a while, but then I could go home.
