Fight Club is a movie about a man, played by Edward Norton, having a personality of another man named Tyler Durden being played by Brad Pitt. The man played by Edward Norton (whom I will call the man for the rest of this paper) is suffering from some sort of sickness (insomnia), which he describes as if “everything is so far away, a copy of a copy of a copy”. Tyler appears as the man’s another personality while sleeping. The man declares that Tyler is a dream, a projection, a disassociative personality disorder, a hallucination. To be able to prevent Tyler from taking over at everything, the man asks Marla, the woman he love, to keep him awake.

Being the man’s another personality; Tyler asserts everything he wants over the man making the former superior to the latter. The two founded the Fight Club together and Tyler was the one who prepared the rules of the club 1.) don’t talk about Fight Club; .) don’t talk about Fight Club; .) when someone says stop, or goes limp, even he’s just faking it, the fight is over & 4.) only two guys to a fight, one fight at a time without shirts or shoes, the fights go on as long as they have to. In this matter, Tyler has attempted to or has successfully inflicted his wills over the other members of the fight club. Tyler is the stronger side of the man’s personality. He is the personality of the man who surpassed himself. Moreover, in relation of the man’s weak character, Nietzsche offers that mankind as it exists is a disease of a sickness which is destroying itself, reflecting the poor nature of a modern man and his lack of pro-activism, being seen as a purely passive creature unable to rebel and define his life. Tyler is what Friedrich Nietzsche calls “overman” who replaces the passive man, as we can see into the man’s weak character. The superman has a ‘will to power’ to set values and goals not only for oneself but also for the others.

By reading the novel (Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk. 16) from which the movie was based, I understand that Tyler’s dogma is that “if you’re male and a Christian and living in America, your father is your model for God. And if you never know your father, what do you believe about God?’ I understand these as an implication of Christianity’s concept of God as wholly love. When we humans are compared to God, we are all sinners, egoistic and selfish. We look for and feel the need to be redeemed because we feel guilty for being bad or evil in God’s face. Furthermore, the possibility that God hates us is not the worst thing that can happen. How Tyler saw it was that getting God’s attention for being bad was better than getting no attention at all maybe because God’s hate is better than His indifference. Unless we get attention, we have no hope of damnation or redemption. But for Nietzsche, if the idea of God as wholly love falls away, so does the feeling of sin as a transgression against divine precepts, as a creature consecrated to God. Hence, man need no longer fear the eternal damnation of the soul. There would be no more values that man ought to follow and confining his freedom by making him feel blameworthy for wanting to do what he wants. This is what Nietzsche means of ‘God is Dead’.
