How does the concentration of hydrogen peroxide depend on the amount of gas released from potato chips?

PLAN.

The apparatus and the uses for each piece that were used for this experiment are listed below

ɨ Measuring cylinder, this was used to measure the hydrogen peroxide. This had a range of 0 to 100 ml and was measured in 1ml units.

ɨ Safety goggles, these were used to protect our eyes when handling the hydrogen peroxide.

ɨ Conical flask, we used this to put the hydrogen peroxide in and then add the potato chips to do the experiment. This had a range of 0 to 75 ml and was measured in 5ml units.

ɨ Bung and tube, the bung was put in the top of the conical flask to stop any gas going anywhere but the tube, the tube was connected to the measuring syringe.

ɨ Measuring syringe, this was used to measure the gas once it had been released. This had a range of 0 to 00 ml and was measured in 1ml units.

ɨ Clamp and clamp stand, we used this to hold the measuring syringe in place.

ɨ Tile, this was used to cut the potato on.

ɨ Scalpel, we used this to cut the potato chips all the right size.

ɨ Chip cutters, these were used to cut the potato into chips.

In this experiment we are going to measure the gas released from the potato chips reacting with the hydrogen peroxide. We are going to make sure our results are valid by doing each experiment twice, if by any chance we are to get very unusual results from one experiment we do the experiment one more time and if the result becomes more accurate we will use that one. The factor that will be varied will be the hydrogen peroxide. We will do this by measuring out 60ml of hydrogen peroxide each time but changing the concentration of it we will start off by using the 5 molar and our last experiment will be using the 0 molar. The factor that we intend to measure to provide our results is the gas being released from the reaction between the hydrogen peroxide and potato chips. We will do this by pouring the 60ml of hydrogen peroxide into the conical flask we will then add the four potato chips and at the same time start the stop clock. We will press the bung into the top of the conical flask as soon as possible after adding the chips so no excess gas is able to escape. We will time the experiment for two minutes and then check the measuring syringe to see how much gas was released into it. The factors that we will keep the same will be the amount of hydrogen peroxide and the size and quantity of the potato chips. We will do this so the experiment is fair and we are able to get a valid collection of results. The factor that we would like to control but cannot is the time it takes to get the bung in the conical flask. We will take account of this and if wee feel it has taken too long to put the bung in the top of the flask then we will re-do that certain experiment. We have decided to take ten measurements our smallest measurement will be the 5 molar strength of hydrogen peroxide and the largest measurement will be the 0 molar strength. We decided to have ten measurements because they will give us a good reliable set of results to plot on our graph and we felt that doing more than 10 would be too many. We have decided to use the concentrations of hydrogen peroxide that were available to us for this experiment, so we did not have much choice of which ones to use. We hope our measurements will be quite accurate so we can have a decent set of results and so we can conclude and evaluate the experiment well. If we feel the measurements we have do not fit the other results we will re-do the experiment incase we did it wrong or something went wrong during the experiment.

I think that the higher the concentration of hydrogen peroxide the larger asmount of oxygen that will be produced from the reaction of

The movie I have chosen to analyse is “The Waterboy”. The Waterboy is a story written from a comedy/sports film template and Gridiron is the featured sport. The movie features a talented cast of Adam Sandler, Kathy Bates and Henry Winkler (also known as the fonz).

Bobby Boucher (Adam Sandler) is a socially inept, 1-year-old man who still lives with his overprotective Mama (Kathy Bates) in their Louisiana home. Bobby had been the waterboy for the Cougars, the states best team, for 18 years, where he became fixated on water specifically, on serving the coolest, most refreshing HO available. That was, until their coach, Red Beaulieu, fires him for being stupid and distracting his players by causing them to pick on him.

Dejected, but still proud of his water serving skills, Bobby approaches Coach Klein (Henry Winkler) of the South Central LSU football team and asks to be the teams waterboy. Klein, who suffered a nervous breakdown after Red stole his playbook and credit years earlier, is still a nervous fruit loop, and his team has not won a game in years. Even so, he gives Bobby the job.

Arriving on the field, the lowly football players immediately pick on Bobby, and Klein tells him he should stand up for himself or he will be walked over for the rest of his life. Accordingly, and after another taunting, Bobbys years of taking such abuse finally boil over and he races out onto the field and tackles a player with a bone-jarring hit.

Klein, immediately sensing Bobbys potential, wants him to play on the team, but must first convince Mama. She, however, wants nothing of the sorts for her son, and refuses to grant her permission. Even so, Bobby decides to try out for the team, enrols in college, and soon becomes a big football star.

As he tries to keep that a secret from his Mama -- while also dealing with her disapproval of his girlfriend, Vicki Vallencourt, whos just been released from jail -- Bobby and Coach Klein prepare for a championship game against Red who will do anything to allow his team to win.

The Waterboy has little to offer in the area of originality and forms the typical underdog, stand-by the appalling sports team that miraculously comes from behind to contend for the championship storyline. Humour is the core element to this film and tends to be primarily driven by comic football violence, the social inadequacies of Bobby Boucher and/or the exaggerated stereotypes of rural Louisiana natives.

Throughout the film, detailed characterizations and plot development appear to become of less significance compared to general stupidity. While it may be an amusing film, there is no intellectual depth, and therefore the film tends to appeal to younger viewers in particular, thus giving a juvenile feel.

While the film is quite humorous, it becomes apparent that the main characters of this film are sketchily developed figures, which lack sophistication and growth. The main character of the film, Bobby Boucher, is the only half-detailed character and represents all that is of some importance in the film and thus helps raise some minor themes and issues.

Loyalty and trustworthiness are two of the issues raised and in some timely scenes; numerous people are shown to be disloyal and untrustworthy towards Bobby.

Bobby is not the most intellectual man and was constantly bullied as a result. Once his rare talent was discovered, he started gaining respect not only as a football superstar but also as a person. During one scene in the film, it is discovered that Bobby did not attend High School and therefore is ineligible to contest the up coming championship game, unless he passes the high school equivalency exam. People are out raged at this and begin doubting the waterboy labelling him a cheat and suggestions of cutting his head off are raised. When bobby aces the test, all is well again, except Bobby realises no one stood up for him during this time and leaves him feeling dejected once again.

Another person that represents the theme of loyalty is that of Bobby’s father, Roberto. Although Roberto fails to appear much throughout the film, he is mentioned on several occasions and becomes this themes ideal representative. As the film progresses, we learn that Roberto abandoned Bobby at a young age, and in an attempt to protect Bobby’s emotional mentality, Mama lies to Bobby, informing him that his father died in the desert as a result of dehydration, hence Bobby’s determination to quench thirst.

From the moment Roberto left, Bobby became the only real object of any importance in mama’s life. Determined to not lose Bobby as well, Mama becomes extremely over-protective, and as a result, disapproves of Bobby partaking in anything social, especially playing football or attending college. In the final scene of the movie, after Bobby has become famous, Roberto appears in an attempt to convince Bobby to play in the NFL.

Another theme developed throughout is the effect sport has on people, whether it is good or bad. Without sport bobby would have remained an outcast, a lonely person, with no aspiring qualities that would appeal to anyone besides his mother. Gridiron gives him an opportunity to develop something more in his life, not only does Bobby make new friends, he fulfils his long life dream of attending college. Bobby always enjoyed sports and Gridiron became his pathway to success. Even though his mother disapproved, Coach Klein convinced Bobby, what your mama don’t know, won’t hurt her”.

Another person deeply affected through the sporting arena was that of Coach Klein. His representation of the mentally disturbed is mainly exploited for the comical possibilities however it still manages to portray the stress of a demanding profession.

Overall, the Waterboy, although lacking in originality and sophistication is quite an intelligent film, while it was not initially shaped to express an in-depth storyline, it depicts some images raised in the sporting arena today, and in doing so creates much comical relief for the viewer.

The music industry has recently been trying to find ways to stop the illegal download of music via PP file sharing networks. Applications such as Kazaa Lite, Grokster, and Sharebear allow the user to download various files from another remote computer without much consent of the user. The music industry has tried to put out their programs that charge a fee for each song downloaded. Some of the first programs asked the user to pay a monthly or quarterly fee for the use of their program. There is also a new program coming out for Mac’s that allows a user with access to pay roughly a dollar per song. Currently, most people use the programs available illegally and go against the copyright laws. Thus, music piracy is growing more day by day.

Music as itself will one day change drastically. With more people downloading files and less CD’s being purchased, the industry will make a big move toward stomping out the illegal download of music. As a musician I would want to make money from the music that I made if I was a professional musician. On the other hand, a musician with a true love of music would not want to charge extremely high prices and make enormous amounts of money for their music. The artist should want their music heard and should not worry about being millionaires. It isn’t really fair that a musician can make more money on one song while teachers are pulling in only enough to make it without going broke.

In summary, music is something that should be shared not just a way for a person or a group of persons to get rich. Therefore, the download of music should not be banned and I think that people should let themselves be heard and tell the music industry to not ban the download of music via peer--peer file sharing networks.

Free market economy

Def An economy where all economic decisions are taken by individual households and firms and with no government intervention. E.g. USA, Hong Kong, UK.

A free market economy functions on the assumptions that firms seek greater profits, workers seek greater wages, and consumers seek best value for money. There are minimal government restrictions and intervention, as the economy regulates itself by the laws of supply and demand.

Price mechanism (def the system in a market economy whereby changes in price in response to changes in demand and supply have the effect of making demand = supply)

Shortage If demand increases or supply decreases, d s. Producers will raise their prices, and supply more. Because of the higher prices, some consumers will be discouraged, and demand will fall. Since demand falls and supply increases, the shortage is eliminated.

Surplus If demand decreases or supply increases, s d. Prices will drop. Producers will now supply less because of the disincentive to produce, and consumers will demand more, since prices are lower. Demand increases and supply decreases, and the surplus is eliminated.

Similarly in the factor economy, as demand for the good increases/decreases, the demand for factors of production of that good also increases/decreases, and prices rise/fall until supply meets demand.

This price mechanism is extremely important in regulating a free market economy, and keeping efficiency at its highest.

Advantages

• Functions automatically, there is no need for the government to make economic decisions.

• Maximizes efficiency in an economy. The more efficiently firms utilize the factors of production, the higher their profits will be. Workers work better to get better wages and job security. Consumers buy the best products at least prices, this gives an incentive to firms to produce better goods and services at lower prices. Everybody gets what they want.

• Competition between firms for higher sales keeps prices low, leading to greater value for money for the common man.

Disadvantages

• Monopoly. Certain large firms, once they gain control, dominate a market, leading to increasing prices and lower efficiency.

• Periods of macroeconomic instability (recession, inflation) are caused because of the interlinking of various industries.

• Unequal distribution of power and property.

• Certain necessary non-profit goods and services may not be produced

• In the pursuit of profit, industries may take unethical shortcuts, leading to environmental degradation.

Are the way I am and the method in which I came to be a direct result of my environment or was it predetermined from birth? The famous question of nature verses nurture is still presently a fiercely debated subject. In this essay, I will dive into the minds and ideas of famous psychologists and apply their methodology in order to explain who I am and how I came to be. I¡¦ll examine the potential influences from my surroundings and also look at the possibility that who I am was inescapable, my genetic makeup had already established the individual that I would be.

Through everyday engagement with people, either casual or formal, you are undoubtedly going to be influenced by those you interact with one way or another. This form of learning, referred to as observational learning, was extensively investigated by Albert Bandura (177, 186). Essentially, observational learning consists of being conditioned indirectly by virtue of observing another¡¦s conditioning (Weiten, 001). The main influence on children growing up is there parents. Many times, the way children act and speak is reflective of how their parents behave. As a child, my parents instilled values in me that I still carry out today. Although there was much love in household, we were a busy family. Consequently, the lack of attention I received as a child resulted in my independent personality today.

Bandura divided observational learning into 4 categories attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation. The first of which is attention, where in order to learn from observation, you must pay attention to another individuals behavior and its consequences (Weiten, 001). My parents would often use punishment as reinforcement to their rules, resulting in my understanding of what is acceptable and what is not. I would also observe others performing what society claims are ¡§unacceptable¡¨ actions and be punished for it, further establishing my understanding of proper conduct. Allowing me to understand what is wrong at a young age becomes the foundation to which my future actions would be measured upon.

Bandura¡¦s second process is retention where you store mental representations of a behavior you have observed because you may not of had the chance to reproduce it (Weiten, 001). Many times while conversing with another person I would wait for a chance to utilize a type of behavior that I had previously observed and had been stored away in my memory because the right opportunity had not yet surfaced. My parents were the main influence to this type of behavior and I have grown accustomed to it through years of putting it into action. It is difficult to distinguish exactly what type of personality best explains who I am as a result of this because many times I do not present an honest representation of myself, for the most part I am only duplicating a behavioral trait that I had observed from another.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Who

essay writing service

The third process in Bandura¡¦s observational learning model is reproduction, which is the ability to reproduce your mental images into behavior (Weiten, 001). Often times I find myself imitating the actions of those that have been a great influence in my life, either in speech or in action. From as far back as I could remember I have always made an effort to reproduce ¡§popular¡¨ behavior that I was able to observe from others. This type of behavior may add to the lack of my own individual personality development because of my need not to further develop my own unique personality but to imitate what the current popular personality trait is. Having a mental image in my memory, according to Bandura, is by far a simpler task then that of actually reproducing it in behavior. Observing someone hitting a homerun in baseball and being able to hit one for yourself are worlds apart.

Bandura¡¦s final step in the process of observational learning is motivation. Motivation is the desire to have a pay off in a situation in order to reproduce an observed response (Weiten, 001). I am very unlikely to reproduce any form of an observed response if I knew that there was nothing to gain from doing so. I came to be this way by observing people who often times gain much from knowing what to do in order to reap the largest pay off. Why else would people act they way they do if their wasn¡¦t any rewards in doing so, be it popularity, money or to achieve some level respect amongst peers. I am driven by the fact that acting in a particular way increases by chances of a meaningful pay off. Just as a rewarding outcome can encourage people to reproduce an observed response, a negative pay off would equally deter them from reproducing it. It is human nature to avoid situations where you know the possibility of a negative outcome outweighs the chances of a positive outcome.

Bandura took a more cognitive approach when dealing with behaviorism. Although he did believe that the environment would define our personality, he did not believe that the environment was the only influence. He took a position called reciprocal determinism where apart from the environment influencing our behavior, our behavior also determines our environment (Weiten, 001). So in other words, both your behavior and your environment can determine your personality. I believe I am a very independent person but not because I was born with it but because the manner in which I was brought up instilled in me an independent nature. On the other side of the argument, the atmosphere around my household was very tense and therefore, acquiring a good sense of humor seemed far-fetched. My sense of humor seems to be mainly due to nature, where my humor is not credited to my surroundings but to my genes. Subsequently, it seems that my personality is not due to only my behavior or to my environment, but it is due to a combination of the two.

Sigmund Freud, often times referred to as the father of psychoanalysis, believed that a person¡¦s individual personality is determined from a very young age. In each of the 4 stages in Freud¡¦s psychosexual stages, the individual would have to face challenges. The manner in which these challenges were met with would determine the type of personality that would be developed. Freud¡¦s psychoanalytic stages consist of the oral stage, anal stage, phallic stage, and the latency and genital stage. Freud greatly emphasized how young children dealt with their immature yet strong sexual urges. Most of his research was centered on the sexual conflicts one would face, which depending on how it was handled, would result in a particular type of personality.

In close examination of my life to this date, using Freud¡¦s theory of development I can safely assume that I have overcome the oral stage of development. According to Freud, the handling of a child¡¦s feeding experiences is essential to the development of the child. Children who had difficulties in this stage, usually return to it in a later stage of their life and exhibit behaviors such as over eating, or smoking (Weiten, 001).

Freud¡¦s second stage in his theory is the anal stage, where the emphasis is on the pleasure a child derives from their bowel movements either through expulsion or retention (Weiten, 001). I grew up in a very strict household where my parent¡¦s expectations for myself were very high, anything less than an adequate performance was met with punishment. Inability to control my bowel movements quickly is an example of a less that adequate performance, therefore it would lead to punishment. This may possibly lead to a feeling of hostility towards my parents for their strict behavior and may account of my independent nature derived from isolating myself from the strict atmosphere.

The third stage in the theory of development is the phallic stage. According to Freud, around the age of 4 the genitals and self-stimulation become the main focus of children (Weiten, 001). In this stage, children develop a strong hostility towards their same sex parent that must be resolved if they are to identify adequately with that parent. Boys develop a sexual preference for their own mother and a hostile feeling towards their father whom the depict as the competitor they must compete against in order to gain the mother¡¦s attention (Weiten 001). Possibly due to my parents divorce, I do feel a strong need to achieve better success as an adult over my father in order to have love of my mother. Where my father failed to maintain the love of my mother, I have used as motivation to not fail but to succeed in sustaining the affection of my mother.

The final stage in Freud¡¦s theory is the latency and genital stage. From the age of six through puberty the child¡¦s sexual urges are suppressed until the actual stage of puberty. From here on, sexual preference once again surfaces but not towards ones own genitals but towards peers of the opposite sex (Weiten, 001). My sexual energy to date is aimed towards peers of the opposite sex. Although my sexual urges are not so out of control as to the risk of my own health, they are at a normal teenage level.

Hans Eysenck, a German psychologist believed, that a persons behavior was primarily based on people¡¦s genes. He believed that certain people were more susceptible to conditioning. During social situations when I am in the company of many unfamiliar faces I become fairly tentative and uneasy. Consequently, I spend the majority of my time conversing with people I am already well associated with. This allows me to avoid any uncomfortable feelings related situations involving first impressions. According to Eysnck, this type of behavior is referred to as introversion where a person¡¦s social discomfort compels them to turn inward. He believed that introverts have higher levels of physiological arousal, which allows them to be more easily conditioned. Being able to be conditioned easily increases the chances of acquiring more conditioned inhibitions than others (Weiten, 001).

So what is it? Is one¡¦s personality predetermined or is it through environmental influences? Freud believed that early childhood experiences and the methods in which people decided to deal with their sexual urges determine the outcome of their behavior whereas Eysnck believed that it is primarily to do with human genetics. Then there is Bandura who believes that it is more or less a combination of the two. Some of my behavioral traits can be linked to early childhood treatment and choices such as my independent nature. On the other hand other characteristics of my personality seem to take more of a genetic approach. In either case, the way I am and the process in which I came to be could have parallels with the methods of a wide range of psychologists. I should not limit the understanding of my personality to just one idea but to embrace the ideas of many.

The NBA is going to be very good this year. The West will obviously dominate the league this year. The Spurs have gotten better. Even with the loss of David Robinson the Spurs signed Rasho Nesterovic. They also got Ron Mercer and Hedo Turkoglu. These are two good young players. They also signed sharpshooter Robert Horry. The Lakers probably made the best move this summer. They signed superstars Karl Malone and Gary Payton. They came to the Lakers in search for a Championship Ring. And I am pretty sure that they will win one. They lost superstar Kobe Bryant to a legal case. But that might make them lose in the playoffs. The Kings lost Hedo Turkoglu and Jake Pollard. In change they got All-Star Brad Miller. I think this was a bad decision because I dont think Brad Miller is that good. The Mavs traded Playoff hero Nick Van Exel to Golden State for Antwan Jamison and some other good players. This will really help the Mavs. The T-Wolves were involved in a trade. They got Latrell Sprewell adn lost injured Terrel Brandon. They also signed young star Michael Olowakandi. THey also had a trade with the Bucks which got them guard Sam Cassel. The East also upgraded. The Nets signed center Alonzo Mourning. Mourning was injured last season with a kidney problem. The Nets expect him to play and I think he will be the difference that will get them to the Finals again. The Pistons did some trading. They drafted European Darko Milicic as the nd pick in the NBA Draft.

If looking back only few last decades ago, it can be seen that the fastest growing industry is technology. As the result, rapid technological advances has leaded dramatic changes in all aspects of society, i.e. family, education , transport, work, medicine etc. How technology will continuous to change this things after 100 years and what our world will be like then, are what I am going to draw up in this scenario.

First interesting figure to look at is family units. In 100, there will be neither any more extended families nor more than children in each family. Nuclear family and single households will be the most popular forms to exist. In addition, natural breeding will increasingly be replaced by artificial one, which is complemented by the development of genetic implanting techniques. The growth of mechanical and engineering technology will bring at leat one robot to each home to do the housework that women normally do today so that they will have time to spend as much on their careers as men do. Therefore, is it easily seen that technology will influence the persons greatly and create a new environment in which persons and the whole society can be more and more satisfied with their needs and wants.

Education is the second field with many promising changes. Along with the process of computerization and the popularisation of the internet, people will not have to go to normal classes for studying and training; in other words, they can seat at home, in front of computers, to do their bachelor, master or PhD with the cost equal to that of an access to the internet. The number of teachers will be restricted to the least as most of the teaching program will be designed and approached through the internet. However, professors will prevail and work as consultants and instructors of those programs. Resulting from higher level of education method and degrees, people will get 50’s time higher IQs and the memory of computers will be implanted in human’s brain to enable them to work more quickly and efficiently.

There will be dramatic changes in food and clothing through the development of high technology. As time is more and more precious, special pills will be invented to fully satisfy human’s appetites or hunger so that they can save time from transporting to the fast food restaurants, waiting for service and sitting there to eat. Along with that, special clothes will also be created. This kind of clothes will be made from supernormal materials with which particular devices are combined to automatically transfer vitamins to the body and keep the body at a relevant temperature. In other words, in hot weather, persons will not be bothered by sweating nor in winter will they have to wear thick clothes to keep warm. Thus, throughout the time, technology will develop more and more, benefiting humans with more comfort and convenience.

In 100 years’ time, transportation will prove significant adjustments. All the transports which are run by petrol will be supplied with new fuel similar to water which costs less and less dangerous. Besides, new kinds of transport which are applicable to underground and ocean cities will e invented as well as special flying trains transporting humans to the moon, the sun and other planets. In general, technology will bring human to other undiscovered worlds where they will construct completely new cities and built new life.

In medicine, academic research and experiments will find cures to dead diseases such as AIDS, cancer, high blood pressure and heart attack. More effective treatment will improve the health of humans; consequently, the average life span will increase to 15o years. Furthermore, each household will normally have a private doctor who is responsible for the health status of the family members; fewer hospitals will operate due to the increasing right-away medical service provided.

Along such number of changes in family units, education, transporting, food, clothing and medicine, it is inevitable that the whole environment also be effected by the improvement of technology. In 100, pullulation will not be a big problem any more owning to the development of smoke eliminating and rubbish recycling techniques. However, global warming will becomes a serious issue as the temperature of the world increases more and more, resulting in ice melting and forest burning. There will be more hot cities, hence, a current of population will permanently move to underground and ocean cities or other planets.

In brief, above is my scenario for the year 100 which I view as a probable future. No matter how true the world will becomes like this, as the time passes by, it is no doubts that the progress of technology will bring quite number of surprising changes to persons, society and the environment on the whole.

In theory the colonies belonged to the king & he could do as he wished with them. But in reality the king did not manage the affairs of the colonies. Ever since King John signed the Magna Carta, in 115, the English kings shared power with Parliament. Parliament & King shared control of the colonies but the king left most decisions to Parliament. Every colony had its own elected government, which passed laws, but the colonies were ultimately under the authority of Parliament. At the head of each colony was a governor. He represented the king and made sure Parliaments laws were enforced. Governors worked for the king not the colony. Local colonial laws were made by elected bodies called assembles or legislatures. Their powers were strictly limited. The King or the governor could cancel any laws passed by a colonial government. This was one cause of the resentment against England. Still the colonial governments had a great deal of power because they controlled local taxes. Since the assemblies had control over money, they could influence the governor by stopping his salary. In the New England colonies many towns ran their affairs using town meetings. At town meeting all the freemen in the town would get together to talk about the issues of the day then vote on the laws they wanted. In the Southern Colonies local government was in the hands of county courts. These courts oversaw all local matters. The chief official of the court was called the Justice of the Peace. The colonial system of government worked well at the time. The king & Parliament made the major decisions with some colonial input, while local questions were left to the colonies and towns. This system worked for a while but in the end the colonists began to resent the control of the English government so far away.

The characters were probably the most interesting element in Lord of the Flies. All British and male, the young boys in this story portray the savagery and sadistic nature to which all but a few succumb. The other boys are the only symbol of sanity on the island. There is also a very interesting conflict between Ralph and Jack. In essence, this is the eternal struggle between good and evil. The ending of the novel concludes in a gut-wrenching showdown between the two.The protagonist in Lord of the Flies is Ralph. At the beginning of the story he is described as being a playful child, but towards the end he matures significantly. He is one of the few boys who realizes that the only way to survive is through peace and order. Because he summons the boys at the beginning of the novel with the conch he and Piggy find, they look upon him as the most responsible of the boys and elect him chief over the humiliated Jack. Jack Merridew, Ralphs main antagonist, is older than most of the other boys. He is the leader of a group of choir boys and is dubbed chief of the hunters by Ralph. He and his hunters become sadistic and detached from the world of peace Ralph creates. Jack is the prime reason why the island becomes full of chaos and corruption. Piggy is a fat little boy who remains close to Ralphs side throughout the story. Although he is intellectually insightful, Piggy is weak and endlessly complains about their troubles. Most of the other boys bully him even though his glasses are their only hope of rescue. Roger is a young lad who comes on to the island with hints of evil. He is constantly bullying Piggy and other small kids. Roger follows Jack, who exploits his dark side, and by the end of their adventures has committed murder as well as many other sadistic acts. Simon is like no other boy on the island. Simons goodness and caring are shown by the way he takes care of the littluns. He is the only boy who discovers the beast on the island that everybody fears. Simons symbolism in this story offers a meaning deeper than just a young, bashful boy.

Over the last few decade television and over the last few years World Wide Web (WWW) has become an integral part of our daily life. For those who have access to these electronic media, its hard to even imagine the life before these. Be it entertainment or information, television and WWW have become indispensable tools. Our life style and the availability and ease of use of these electronic media have definitely given a backseat to reading books. And because of the interactive nature of these media people definitely learn faster from these media than from books. But do they acquire the same in-depth knowledge from these media as they would acquire from books, I dont think so.

Over the last few decades television has made a tremendous progress. The variety of the programs covers all age groups and almost all, it not all, interests. With the advertisement industry becoming big money pumping machine, the quality of the programs has also improved a lot. No doubt people spend a lot of time watching television. Todays life is so fast paced that by the time people retire after a long working day they are too tired to read any book; most of the people just sit in front of television and watch their favorite programs.

World wide web (WWW), the product which people did not even imagine a few years ago, dominates our lives so much that it is hard to think now how do we use to get the information when there was no WWW! Yes, this gift of electronic age has revolutionized our way of working. No book store covers the range of information that is covered by WWW and to top it all, most of the time its free and just a click away! No more trips to bookshops or libraries; even the libraries also have their websites which provide easy access to catalog of books.

It is true that television and WWW provide a lot of information and learning becomes relatively easy when the media is interactive or has audio/video programs. But where television program can cover breadth of information, it is difficult for it to cover the depth because of the time constraint. Also when we watch a program on television, we do not notice all the details because our mind is preoccupied in the main subject. When we read a book, we read every detail mentioned there; we no longer just listen to words spoken by the main characters, we read the details which go unspoken in the television program. As far as WWW is concerned, it is true that one can find all sorts of information on this, but if one is looking for an online book, not many are available. Even if a book is available online, most of the people dont find reading online book as good an experience as reading paper book; for example, one cant mark the important notes on the book; even if such software is provided which allows to mark the online book, one doesnt get the same feeling as one gets by holding a book in his/her hands. If people have to read a long online document, they generally prefer to print it and then read it. Efforts are underway to improve the online reading experience particularly when it comes to books, but so far they have not been tremendously successful.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on "In this electronic age, reading has inevitably taken a back seat to watching television and gleaning information from the World Wide Web. People learn far more readily from the electronic media than they do from print."

essay writing service

In summary, I agree that reading has taken a back seat to watching television and gleaning information from WWW and speed of learning is mostly higher with electronic media than books, but I contend that, as of now, books are sine qua non of our quest for knowledge. Not only in covering the depth of information, but also in comfort of use, books are indispensable.

Less Than Slaves

The author of this latest Exterminationist tome will already be familiar to those Revisionists who have read Richard Harwoods masterpiece of research Nuremberg a Other War Crimes Trials (available from IHR at $. 50). Dealing with the American Military Trial number 10-the Krupp trial-Harwood reveals how Ferencz was one of those American prosecutors who stayed on in Germany long after the dust had settled at the Nuremberg Court of Justice.

Ferenczs task was to secure financial compensation for individual Jews around the world who felt that they had suffered some financial loss at the hands of the Nazis. But this did not prevent him vigorously lobbying against proposed clemency for the many hundreds of German war criminals languishing in prison; in part due to Ferenczs efforts in court.

Ferenczs latest book is based on his unique knowledge and experience; first as a prosecutor in the Krupp case, and later as director of the negotiations to secure compensation for Jewish survivors of labor camps. The remarkable thing about this book is that, although it deals almost totally with the Mill of Death itself-Auschwitz-there is hardly any mention at all of gas chambers or Zyklon B or even an extermination program. The only mentions are on page 15, where he quotes Nuremberg document NO-65, which is an unsigned letter; pages 16-1, which rely on the notorious forgery, the Hoss confessions; and on a very few other pages, where the reference to extermination is cursory and unreferenced.

According to the author, Jews not fit for work in the Krupp and other plants at Auschwitz would be packed off to nearby Birkenau (Brzezinka) for gassing. The camps of Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka and Chelmno (Kulmhof-an-der-Neer) were the only camps purely for extermination. He also mentions yet another camp called Jungfernhof, near Riga in Latvia, where Jews were shipped from as far away as Austria for extermination. However, he does not attempt to explain why they were sent over 1000 miles for gassing, when they passed en route perfectly functional extermination camps such as Birkenau, Majdanek, Sobibor, and Treblinka, which were all reportedly in full operation, gassing Jews night and day, and belching forth smoke and ashes.

The revised Exterminationist view of Ferencz tallies rather closely with that of Gitta Serenys revision of Holocaust mythology in the New Statesman of November 17. They both place the exterminations at the four camps Chelmno, Sobibor, Treblinka and Belzec (although Ferencz adds Birkenau and the mysterious Latvian camp, Jungfernhop. Could it be that there is some collusion at work here, whereby the Exterminationist high priests have got together to get their stories straight? Perhaps they realize that the game is up, as far as Auschwitz and the Old Reich camps are concerned, and now they are trying to salvage whatever they can from the rapidly crumbling Holocaust house of cards? They have sought refuge in the only possible corner, which is to maintain that the exterminations took place at camps which have now been obliterated without trace, and that the function of Auschwitz and the western camps was to work people to death.

Regrettably, even this position is somewhat untenable, since this very book is about all those thousands upon thousands of Jews who survived the very horrific working conditions which were supposed to destroy people through work! One of the most useful appendices in this very professionally laid out book is a list of claims paid to such survivors. As of the end of 17, nearly 15,000 claimants from 4 different countries had been paid 5 million Deutschmarks. Perhaps the authors acknowledged origins in Transylvania have something to do with this vampirical campaign.

Ferencz now runs a prestigious law office in New York City which specializes in International Law. His book has already been favorably reviewed in the Communist Daily World (1 December 17) and in the New York Times Book Review ( December 17); in the latter case by the discredited historian Martin Gilbert.

Niccolo’s Smile A Biography of Machiavelli is written by Maurizio Viroli. Maurizio Viroli, a native born Italian, received a PhD in Social and Political Sciences at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, and a degree in Philosophy at the University of Bologna, Italy. He has written two other books, A Dialogue on Republican Values (001), and Republicanism (1). Of the three books, Niccolo’s Smile has been reviewed as the greatest of the three, and the most outstanding of novels about Macchiavelli. After reaserching what other books Maurizio Viroli wrote, I discovered that many people call Viroli ‘One of Italy’s finest writers on the History of Ideas.’

In Niccolo’s Smile, Maurizio Viroli aimed to recount the same stories that Roberto Ridolfi wrote, but to write them in a new way. Viroli tried to focus on aspects that were previously overlooked and wanted to revise accepted views of Machiavelli. Viroli mentions how fascinated he was by Machiavelli - by his political thinking and writing, but especially by the way in which he laughed about light and other people. Moreover, he wrote this book to try to understand the meaning of Machiavalli’s endless smile, a smile that emerged from his letters, his works, and from certain portraits of him. Viroli’s main objective in the book is to interpret in detail how Machiavelli’s smile represented a great understanding of life, even deeper than his political thought. In addition to defining Machiavelli’s smile, Viroli also works to anazlye the overall life of Machiavelli.

Predominately, Viroli articulates how Machiavelli’s smile can be used to characterize Machiavelli himself, and his life as a whole. Viroli begins the story by describing Machiavelli’s upbringing. Machiavelli was born into “poverty” (6), which did not help usher him into a good job in society. Although he was poor, this background guided him, along with teachers, to form “a distincly personal conception of life - a rich blend of generosity, enthusiasm for great deeds, intense passions, comprehension of

the fagility of life, and a love of beauty that sprang in part from a deep understanding of life’s harshness and human malice” (10). Viroli contines through the book giving brief histories of Florence, Machiavelli’s personal life and family, Machiavelli’s tragedies, and of course, politics. In general, the book is a concise and lively account of Machiavelli’s life which provides the average reader with historical context and background to understand most of Machiavelli’s works. It is almost like Viroli is writing more of an argument of a misunderstood legend than a plain, simple biography. Although the book is informative, at times Viroli’s admiration for his charismatic subject begins to overwhelm his argument. Also, on occasions, Viroli will lose his focus of the topic, or overly comment on Machiavelli’s smile. Aside from these few bothersome qualities of the book. Viroli adequately covered the material of his theme, and at times he over wrote about it. The book was written in a very scholarly manner.

The strengths of the book are rely on how Viroli compiled the book. Viroli’s writing, unlike others’, presents the full Machiavelli, not just the cynical philosopher of politics as excerpts in the Viroli’s book contained. In the book he included enough information the give the reader a sense of awareness of early Europe and Machiavelli, which this knowledge in turn could be used to understand many of Machiavelli’s own works. The story also does have an undeniable charm and wit to itThese are the only strengths of the book. There are quite a few weaknesses, including all of the annoyances that were described above; how Viroli overwhelmed his argument because of his zeal for the subject, or how he over-explained Machiavelli’s smile. I would review the book as flat, unemotional and strangely hard to follow. Italian names are hard to procounce in the English language and the story does not flow well. The story jumps around making parts unclear. It would have been very helpful if there were a glossary of prodominent characters and events. All in all, I think it was an informative book, but

the smile business was overdone, and I would have preferred to hear more about Machiavelli’s frown. The book was a frustrating read, but I expected that. I loved Machiavelli’s motto “It is better to act and repent than not to act and regret” that he repeated to his friends.

Did you know that a cheetah is often mistaken for a leopard? However, it is very different from the leopard. One example is that cheetahs hunt by chasing and outrunning their prey while leopards use their spotted coats as camouflage and hide in bushes to ambush their prey. Cheetahs are the fastest land animals on earth. They can run 75 to 80 miles per hour. Long legs and a small head enable them to run at these high speeds. This fast land animal is mainly found in Southeast Africa, but can be seen in Southern Asia. In Asia, because of their ability to run at high speeds, wild cheetahs are sometimes trained for hunting.

The Sounds They Make

Instead of roaring like the other big cats in the cat family, cheetahs purr, bark, growl, hiss, and chirp but do not roar. Often a cheetah will chirp to attract a bird, then, when the unwary bird comes looking for the other chirping bird, the cheetah has lunch.

The Cheetah’s Eating Habits

Cheetahs are naturally carnivorous. In other words, they eat only meat. Their diet includes small antelope, gazelle, baby warthogs, and as you already know, birds. All wild cats except the cheetah hunt nocturnally. The cheetahs hunt in early morning and late afternoon. They start to hunt on their own at six months old. But even before that the mother will bring live prey back to the den for the baby cheetah to practice killing.

In 100 there were about 100,000 cheetahs worldwide. Now because of poachers going after cheetahs fur coats, there are only 10,000 living today with 1/10th of those in captivity.

Isabel Allende incorporates many of the common elements of fiction writing in her short story, “The Judge’s Wife;” most of all, she uses intense imagery to create the background setting as well as her story’s main characters. Considering the story’s setting and characters, it’s interesting to note that there never appears the typical “shootout” confrontation a reader might expect. In spite of this, it’s doubtful anyone would come away from this story with a sense of boredom, which is unusual in today’s world of short attention spans and in-your-face action.

“The Judge’s Wife” is set in a rustic Latin-American town that’s just large enough to have a town square, but small enough so that none of the town’s inhabitants are ignorant to the drama this story entails. Allende gives no explicit details about the town besides the fact that there is a courthouse, a bank, and a corner shop owned by a Turkish woman. Instead, she uses her adept skill of imagery to paint a picture of this town, a place that modern time has seemingly passed by. Modern time, that is, for the USA. Small, dusty, square-centered towns in today’s America are a thing of the past, preserved only in the lore of old “wild west” stories. In “The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky,” Stephen Crane portrays just such a town which, in the end, could not hang on to its past; could not let progress pass it by. But “The Judge’s Wife” is not set in today’s America, nor is the small town a thing of the past in much of Latin America. In fact, many aspects of life in Latin America can be compared to those of the mid- to late-1800’s western United States. From the socially acceptable brothels to the lone lawman in constant conflict with a vigilante outlaw, rural Latin America has much development in its future before it can catch up to the life experienced today in the U.S. Allende’s first use of imagery appears when she describes the local climate of the old town “…the heat and the dust that filtered in through every pore to lodge itself in the soul,” (Allendale, 61). Setting is most definitely important to this story. The appearance of a motorcar later in the story lends to the idea that it takes place in more modern times (actually it takes place in the latter half of the twentieth century). So the fact that such a town (with its physical and mental characteristics) exists in modern times means that the story must take place in a region with such towns; hence, “The Judge’s Wife” can only be set in Latin America.

Character development is where the author best puts her imagery to work for the reader; Allende doesn’t just describe the story’s characters, but rather lets small details come together to form her character’s features. In first describing the judge who “dressed formally in black, and, despite the all-pervading dust in this godforsaken town, his boots always shone with beeswax,” readers come to understand that this man has definite values, and a strict adherence to them (61). This is no small detail for the judge, as his attention to formalities, especially those concerning the law, is the one of the main catalysts to this story’s conflict. The story’s protagonist, Dona Casilda, is described as an “ethereal slip of a girl” whose fingers were “obviously unskilled in the art of rousing a man to pleasure,” (61). But she was the epitome of a delicate and refined lady who “was such an airy, diaphanous creature that a moment’s carelessness might mean she disappeared altogether” (61). Then there is Nicolas Vidal, the antagonist. A straightforward description of this man would leave out the reasoning behind why he is the monster that he appears to be. For this, the author still utilizes imagery, but Vidal’s description is so lengthy, detailed, and important, that nearly an entire page of this short story is devoted to a flashback from his birth to present. Readers learn of how he came to be in existence, an accidental and unwanted pregnancy, with its numerous failed attempts at abortion, which only served to “temper his soul to the hardness of iron” (61). At birth, because he had four nipples, he was predicted to lose his head over a woman. This prediction created in Vidal a life-long fear of women, which “lent his face a doleful expression,” and clouded his eyes with “tears he would never allow to fall” (61). Further details reveal that this man constantly harasses the town, and is such a fearsome man, that he and his band of outlaws cannot be brought to justice by the town’s judge.

The point of view and style of Allende are easily discerned from the story. She writes in third person omniscient, with a basic chronological sequence of events. The point of view is important to truly get to know each of the main characters. To have only heard the story from Casilda’s point of view would have changed the whole impact of the story; the audience would have only seen the view of a woman who had to take some serious risks in order to protect her family on two separate occasions. To tell the story from Vidal’s eyes may have made for a more adventurous tale, but would require too much development, and would have left out the crucial decisions faced by Casilda. To have written “The Judge’s Wife” in a different style wouldn’t have altered any meaning, but the author correctly chose the sequence which allowed the story simply to be told, and to let the theme and irony be effectively portrayed.

Theme is a huge, underlying part of this story, and is supported largely by the setting. Not only is the town “behind the times” in its physical development, but mentally as well; Latin America in the mid- to late-twentieth century was, and still is, a very traditional, male dominated society. It is a very “macho” society, which is blatantly evidenced in the story when the judge had attempted to set a trap for Vidal using Vidal’s own mother, Juana the Forlorn. Vidal’s only reasoning to his men about why he refused to aid his mother was, “We’ll see who’s got more balls, the Judge or me” (614). Vidal’s macho attitude backfired though, when his mother killed herself to hide from the shame that her own son wouldn’t rescue her. Vidal wasn’t alone in dealing with the traditional macho attitude; the judge also had to contend with his own masculinity. After withstanding the insults and pleadings of his townsfolk to release Juana the Forlorn, only his bride of seven years was able to change his mind. As described, Casilda was a meek woman, content with her place in the world to raise children, keep the house, and go to church. So it was difficult for her to break from tradition, overstep her bounds as a woman, and “[go] against him...in front of the whole town” (615).

The traditional theme of the story again appears near the end, when Casilda, in an effort to save her children, must break from her womanly role as an innocent victim. To buy time for her children until the militia arrives, Casilda prepares to volunteer her body to the ensuing attackers. When only Vidal appears, she then turns her traditional role as a woman from that of being a victim into a position of power. She at once became the controller of the situation, utilizing all the sexual skills she had never indulged, or even dared to explore, in her marriage to Judge Hidalgo. Throughout the encounter, she never lost thought of the safety of her children, but at some point she discovered “her own possibilities [as a woman, and] gave herself completely” to Vidal (617).

Symbolism does not take a large role in “The Judge’s Wife.” The only place it is apparent is in Casilda’s confrontation with her husband in the town square “[she] tied a black ribbon around [her children’s] arms as a token of mourning” (615). Casilda was mourning her innocence as a mere housewife, marking the end of the seven years of servitude to her husband.

At the end of the story, the irony hits hard. Throughout his life, Nicolas Vidal had endured a fear of women, and only encountered them when he needed to satisfy the demands of manhood (61). But in the end, when he encountered the one woman whom he never at once considered a threat of possibly fulfilling his deadly prophecy, it was she with whom he let himself free. She showed him the “intimacy, tenderness, secret laughter, the riot of the senses, [and] the joy of shared passions” that he had never known (616). He had finally felt love, and he chose not to run away from it, even as the soldiers neared.

“The Judge’s Wife” is not a long story, at just over five pages. But in those few pages, primarily with the use of strong imagery, Allende creates a piece readers can understand to the point of empathy. Though one of the main characters perishes at the end, readers are left with a sense of hope that love can exist in even the most hardened or oppressed of hearts
