She is a strong woman, who fulfills her obligations, while living in shame and vanishment. Furthermore, the conflicts within Hester Prynne illuminates the meaning of the work as a whole.

Hester Prynne arrives, alone, in a Puritan town in Boston, during the seventeenth-century. While waiting for her husband to join her, she meets a young minister named Dimmesdale. As their friendship becomes stronger, they find themselves in a tangle of mixed emotions. They fall in love with each other, and committs adultery. Hester, then conceives, and gives birth to a girl named Pearl, who is the fruit of her love affair with Dimmesdale, whom she refuses to reveal in public, as her lover and partner in crime. Hester gets punished for her sin; being shamed in public, and bearing a scarlet letter A on her chest, which is the symbol for adultery. Hester gets in conflict with her emotions. Her obligations for instance, are so much for her to bear. Her life would be easier if she reveals her lovers name in public her shame and punishment would be reduced. Hester, however, loves Dimmesdale so much, that she takes on all the shame and blame, and forsakes her dignity for his. She knows her obligation is to live through her sin, and bear its proof . Also, upon learning her husbands arrival, and his knowledge on what had become of her, Hester decides to keep his identity in secrecy as well. She didnt want to embarrass her husband, whom she did not married out of love. Instead, having being disgraced and shunned by the society, she decides to live far and alone, in a small cottage, along with her daughter, Pearl. Also, she lives off as a seamstress. Hester creates a new world for her and her daughter, keeping so many secrets with her.

Hester Prynne, is pulled in conflicting directions by her ambitions. For instance, it was her ambition to find a man, the right man, who she will love. She does find him, so she decides to forsake her marriage, and risk what she had, in order to have what she did not have before. It was her ambition to have a family, and she knew she could not have that with her husband, Chillingworth, because first of all, she did not love him. Though Hesters adultery was revealed in public, she still keeps her ambition to have her family together. She takes all the punishment, saving Dimmesdale the shame she faces. Hester gets in conflict with her emotions. Living in shame and disgrace, it was not clear if she will ever have the family she had always wanted. It seemed impossible for the three of them to unite, so Hester hesitates to believe it was possible. Though Hester doubts their reunion, she believes that the three of them can. Towards the end, Hester and Dimmesdale, meets and plans to move to Europe to start a new life as a family, which has been a dream for Hester. Though their plans were arranged, they fail to go on through it. Dimmesdale dies, from having been suffering extremely from his own sin. Hester and Peal leaves, and starts a new life without him. In the end, Hesters dream gets fulfilled, as her family finally reunites. Pearl is happily married, and Hester finally finds peace, laying next to Dimmesdale in a single tombstone, which bears a scarlet A.

Hester Prynnes conflicts illuminates the meaning of the work as whole. She committs adultery, and lives through the punishments of her sin. It is wrong to committ adultery, and its punishments may be severe. In Hesters case, she suffered severely. Love can be proven in many ways, sometimes through sacrifices, and thats what Hester and Dimmesdale does. Hester sacrifices her dignity for Dimmesdale, while he sacrifices his life, all for the sake of Hester and Pearl.
