The way the author displays three different people’s lives at once, in intervals sort of embodies the concept that every person works together, as cells in a body, to make society function properly. By drugging society into thinking it is normal, the body functions successfully, according to the controllers.

The controllers try to genetically engineer each caste to perform a task willingly, without wanting anything more. The leaders literally grow and produce babies in factories, and brainwash them from the time they are born throughout their whole lives. The people in each social class are brainwashed as they sleep to hate the members of any other caste and to enjoy performing their task. The uniform population shudders at the sound of any emotional term or word suggesting family or commitment to a single person, with the exception of Bernard Marx, who, because of his resistance to conform to the stable system along with the rest, and insufficient appearance which contrasts with all the members of high social class, is said to have been wronged as a baby. Society believes he was confused with an Epsilon, who is at the bottom of the social ladder, and an employee put alcohol in his bottle. Epsilons are tainted as children, alcohol is inserted into their bodies to mark them as the low class pedestrians they are. The alcohol stunts their growth, makes them scrawny and less attractive then the highly regarded Alphas and Betas who are bred beautifully. Marx thrives on emotion and personal attention. Marx seems to prefer the style that the savages obtain on the Reservation. He is mesmerized by the woman who is breastfeeding her child when he visits New Mexico. The closeness and intimacy astounds Marx, and he loves the fact that she gets to raise her baby.

The controllers use drugs to regulate people and clear their heads of any unique thoughts; other than the ones they are supposed to think. While curiosity and individuality are encouraged in modern time for the most part, Huxley’s civilization is based on stability and repels those who question or rebel. Humanity is controlled by the rulers as if they were playing a video game. They dress all the social classes differently and genetically alter the appearance and attitudes of each individual according to their social standing.

The Savage is misconstrued at a young age because of Linda, his mother. She builds up this beautiful image of the civilized world in his head. He feels misinformed when Linda slowly dies off, people come to see him as if he were a rare animal in a zoo; he hates that life is too easy, there’s nothing to live for, he thinks soma is poison, always up for a challenge, wanting to take a risk, didn’t fit in with the rest of the savages because they didn’t let him join their rituals, he always wanted to take part in the painful whippings to show them he could do it, longs for mystery in life, there is no mystery in this world created by the controllers,

Bernard quickly conforms to the civilized way when he becomes very popular due to the Savage. He begins to enjoy life the way it is when he is regarded highly and well liked, as opposed to before when he was excluded because of his different appearance, his confidence lowered and so did his desire to be a part of this robotic world.

Someone once said that life is much more meaningful if you work hard for the things you want. Pay your dues, work hard, and get what you want. You feel more satisfied. In order for goodness to be fully appreciated, the bad must be present.

Throughout Brave New World, soma, a drug to maintain willing workers, is rationally distributed to all the social classes periodically. Soma signifies the evil that the controllers work so hard at eliminating. It seems that soma unifies the people, yet erases individuality; controls the person, much like modern drug are capable of doing to a person today.

Bernard becomes intoxicated by the power of popularity, and succumbs to liking the system when he is valued greatly.

The “feelies” represent the fact that a person doesn’t have to actually live through a certain experience; go through all the excitement and wonder of a new relationship, all the tears, laughs, all of it in order to experience it at the “feelies.” The “feelies” represent the world that the controllers have created one in which it is no longer necessary to experience pain, anger, frustration, any emotion that may have ever been referred to with a negative connotation. One reaps only the benefits of life when acting properly, though brainwashed, and life seems good, although not many people are very distinguishable, since they are all trained to act, think, and dress the same. The feelies do the same thing. They provide an source of entertainment when an individual can experience kisses, embraces, and touches of another person without actually having to confront the person later on and talk to them about anything.

The savage, in trying to make the people who come to see him in the end leave, in a fit of rage actually ends up giving them what he and they truly want. He wanted to beat Lenina with the whip, the crowd was hollering for the whip.

The way that people in Brave New World refer to Ford as if he were their God, shows the fact that society has been modeled around money and wealth. Crosses exchanged for T’s. Ford, being the manufacturer of the first automobile, a jackpot for the industrial world, emerges as the “god” for society. They model their lives on their jobs, not family.

John feels so much more self-fulfilled towards the end of the book, when he isolates himself from civilization, living on the bare minimum. He thrives on the fact that he makes everything he uses to survive, disciplines himself constantly for buying some food from a civilized man and refuses to eat it. The civilized just can’t get enough of the crazy antics of this “wild” man, and treat him as if he’s a freak show at the circus. The “civilized” crowd throws packets of gum, grammes of soma, and various other items at the misunderstood creature, similar to children throwing food at bears caged at the zoo.

The spectators, those who came to be entertained by the crazy antics of the Savage, further their inhumane, bestial manners when they encourage John to whip a member of their society with his chain. It never occurs to them that this “beast” will viciously attack and maybe even kill an aristocratic woman that they all know. They feel no sympathy for the one who is beaten, or fear that they may be next, all they know, instinctively, is that it is funny, and entertaining. Many popular television shows and movies today exhibit crude displays of such cruel humor, but the shows are never of people that we know, and usually are not true. These shows are created in order to promote emotions; to scare us, make us sad, and sometimes to produce a comedic effect. The scene that Huxley creates in Brave New World, when society sees the Savage for the last time, evokes no emotions in these robotic people who care about no one, “for everyone belongs to everyone else,” so it doesn’t matter what happens to one person because there are others almost exactly like him or her. The individuals in each class are trained to think alike and work alike, and to take pleasure in the same things. Sex is a meaningless act, purely used as exclusive entertainment.

Before 100, very few people died of heart disease. Since then, heart disease has become a number one killer in adults. The age of technology has made life easier and made people more prone to heart disease.

Before the Industrial Revolution, most people made their living through some sort of manual labor. Walking was the major means of transportation. Laundry was scrubbed and wrung by hand. Stairs were climbed, carpets were beat, and butter was churned.

With the arrival of automation, life became less strenuous. Most manual labor was either replaced or assisted by machinery. Automobiles, washing machines, elevators, and vacuum cleaners became commonplace. Modern conveniences made physical activity unnecessary.

Along with the change in lifestyle came a change in diet. Previously, such high-fat treats had to be made by hand. Fried foods, like potato chips, hamburgers, and French fries, became staples in many diets.

The combination of a inactive lifestyle and a rich diet led to an increase in clogged blood vessels, heart attacks, and strokes. Heart disease became commonplace. The rate of heart disease increased so sharply between the 140 and 167 that the World Health Organization called it the worlds most serious epidemic.

Medical science immediately went to work studying the disease and searching out its causes and cures. After years of research scientist, doctors and the public learnt what heart disease was and what caused it.

Heart disease is caused by narrowing of the coronary arteries that feed the heart. Like any muscle, the heart needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients, which are carried to it by the blood in the coronary arteries. When the coronary arteries become narrowed or clogged by cholesterol and fat deposits, and cannot supply enough blood to the heart, the result is coronary heart disease (CHD). If not enough oxygen-carrying blood reaches the heart, you may experience chest pain called angina. If the blood supply to a portion of the heart is completely cut off by total blockage of a coronary artery, the result is a heart attack.

There are now quite well known and adopted lifestyle ways that are preventing heart disease in adults such as

· Not smoking

· If you have diabetes, control your blood sugar.

· Exercising. This sounds hard if you havent exercised for a while, but try to work up to at least 0 minutes of aerobic exercise (that raises your heart rate) at least 4 times a week.

· If youre overweight, lose weight.

· If you have hypertension, control your blood pressure.

· Most importantly, eating a healthy diet.

When selecting foods, it is important to remember the amount of total saturated fatty acids, cholesterol, fat and sodium these foods may add to your daily menu. Choose foods low in saturated fatty acids, cholesterol and sodium. Reading labels and ingredient statements is a way to discover what is contained in a product.

To take the first step in heart-healthy nutrition, follow these easy AHA dietary guidelines Saturated fatty acid and trans fats intake should be less than 10 percent of calories (less than 7% if you have heart disease, have had a heart attack or have high cholesterol). Polyunsaturated fatty acid intake should be 8 to 10 percent of calories. Monounsaturated fatty acids make up the rest of the total fat intake, about 10 to 15 percent of total calories. Total fat intake should be no more than 0 percent of calories. Cholesterol intake should be less than 00 milligrams per day. Sodium intake should be no more than ,400 milligrams (.4 grams) per day.

For centuries, we have altered our appearance through various forms of cosmetic plastic surgery. The term plastic surgery encompasses two separate categories “reconstructive plastic surgery” and “cosmetic plastic surgery.” While “reconstructive plastic surgery” is performed on abnormal structures of the body resulting from trauma, infection, congenital defects, disease, tumors, etc., “cosmetic plastic surgery” is typically performed to repair or reshape otherwise normal structures of the body.

Today, the number of plastic surgery related procedures performed worldwide continues to grow at an impressive rate. While women account for the majority of all cosmetic procedures performed, more and more men are using plastic surgery as a means of turning back the clock and enhancing their self-image.

The top five surgical procedures according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery are liposuction, breast augmentation/enlargement, eyelid surgery, nose reshaping, and breast reduction. Approximately 6. million plastic surgery/cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures were performed in the United States in 00.

In this essay however I would like to focus on the aspects of the cosmetic plastic surgery. From the head to the feet and any area in between those points, a cosmetic surgery exists to enhance the beauty of the human body.

The types of cosmetic procedures more commonly performed in modern day society are liposuction, full face-lift, breast augmentation, hair transplant, tummy tuck, and the breast reduction. The number one cosmetic procedure performed is the liposuction surgery this surgery usually averages about $,500.00 per area. Liposuction which is also know as abdominal liposculpture removes fat deposits permantly from the abdomen, this procedure when performed successfully can trim excess fat in the abdomen for a flatter abdomen and more slender balanced shape which provides a psychological lift and an extra incentive to exercising regularly and maintaining fitness.

This procedure usually takes about 1- hours per treated area and is normally done under local anesthesia and heavy sedation, risks and complications include dimpling, lumpiness, numbness, scarring, and discoloration of the skin around the treated area.

During the surgery the areas of the body where the fat is to be removed are marked and tiny incisions are made in the skin, usually in the naval or just below the bikini line, a tube is then inserted and the unwanted fat is removed by a powerful vacuum.

The second most common procedure is the full face-lift, as we age our facial skin loosens and wrinkles the muscles of the neck may weaken as well. With the facelift procedure you can fix these problems by firming and tightening the skin of the face and neck all in one step. This procedure is most effective for the lower face (jowls and neck). The facelift procedure usually cost in average about $5,00.00, the most common benefits of this surgery are to make the person appear to be a decade younger than their actual age.

The surgery usually takes about - hours and can be performed under local or general anesthesia depending on the length of the procedure. A facelift is a surgical procedure, and is subject to all of the usual problems that accompany surgery. But…bleeding from the cut tissue, leading to bruising and possible accumulations of blood under the skin are some risks associated with this surgery.

In the facelift procedure an incision is made from the hair near the temple and continues in front of the ear, around the ear lobe, behind the ear and into the hair. The muscles and sagging tissue are tightened, excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin is repositioned to create a more youthful look, if the neck needs lifting, a small incision may be made under the chin.

The third most commonly performed procedure is the breast augmentation also know as a breast enlargement. This procedure usually averages about $4,500.00 and the most common benefit of this surgery is to enlarge the breasts. It will not however improve nipple asymmetry, move breasts closer together, or lift droopy breasts. This surgery is mainly performed to balance a difference in breast size, improve body contour, or as a post-surgery reconstructive technique.

This surgery usually lasts about 1- hours and is usually done under local anesthesia with sedation. Risks and complications include capsular contracture, and interference with mammography. Capsular contracture is one of the most common complications associated with breast augmentation, it occurs when the scar tissue hardens around the implant. But it is more common following infection, hematoma, and seroma.

According to the FDA, in a clinical study of saline-filled breast implants conducted by Mentor, % of 164 women with implants experienced capsular contracture after years of study, another study by the FDA indicated that 17.5% of 74 women had at least on surgical procedure over an average of 7.8 years because of capsular contracture.

In this surgery silicone shells filled with saline solution are implanted either directly under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle, giving breasts a fuller and more natural contour.

The fourth most commonly performed procedure is the hair transplant, this surgery averages $,000.00 and the most common benefits of this procedure is that it provides a new looking head of hair although they do not actually add hair to the head they provide the appearance of more hair.

This procedure usually lasts about -4 hours for each transplant and is performed under local anesthesia, risks and complications include scarring on the grafted areas, and infection of the grafted sites. There are two common methods used for removing hair to be transplanted, small circular areas (plugs) which include eight and twelve hairs. Or in long strips along the sides or near the bottom of the hairline.

This surgery is performed by taking strips or patches of hair from the back of the head, the patches or strips are then cut into smaller pieces, which are then “planted” in the balding area then sutures are applied to close the area where the grafts were taken.

The fifth most common procedure performed today is the tummy tuck, this procedure usually averages about $4,500.00 and this procedure is usually performed after excessive weight loss or pregnancy, when the abdomen often fails to return to its original shape. And is usually performed under general anesthesia, the most common benefits to this surgery are that it can dramatically tighten the abdominal muscles, as well as the sagging, excess skin, and accumulated fatty tissue.

This surgery takes about -5 hours depending on the extent of the surgery; a partial tummy tuck takes about 1- hours. Risks and complications include bleeding, reaction to anesthetic, and infection. Scars are to be expected, but they will become lighter and flatter with time. Strenuous exercise and weight loss alone will reduce the bulk of the abdominal wall and tighten the muscle tone; however, the stretched skin may not be able to contract without surgery.

This surgery is performed by making a small incision across the lower abdomen, just above the pubic area and another around the belly button to free the surrounding skin, and then all of the skin is separated from the abdominal wall. Then the loose muscles are pulled from the left and the right sides and sutured together, the excess skin is removed and a new opening is made for the belly button at the right position.

The sixth most common procedure performed is the breast reduction; this surgery reduces lifts and reshapes the breasts. It can also reduce the size of the areola. Many women seek breast reduction to alleviate painful discomfort and other conditions (back pain, shoulder pressure, rashes, skin tags, etc.) as well as to improve the appearance of their breasts. This surgery averages about $,000.00.

This surgery usually lasts about -4 hours and risks and complications include breast feeding problems, hematoma (pooling of clotted blood; risk is -4%) or asymmetry which is small differences in shape or size of the breasts are not uncommon following breast reduction surgery.

During this surgery a small incision is made which is normally in a keyhole pattern, fat and extra tissue are then removed and the areola and nipples will be repositioned to a higher place and then excess skin is removed from beneath the breast. In this surgery there is a satisfaction rate that ranges from 80% to 5%, and symptom relief is reported from 70% to 100%.

Isn’t it amazing that in modern society that if you aren’t satisfied with your body, any part of your body that you can always tuck it, lift it, or suck it out; my suggestion is if you were born with it, keep it and leave it the way it is!

We human beings are different from the machine. We can not work all the time without ant form of rest or recreation.

To prevent yourself from getting tired too soon, it is essential to keep several principles in mind.

First, don¡¯t do the same kind of work too long and overwork one nerve center. Arrange your work properly. If you are reading articles, then it is less tiring to read ad take notes than just to read. This is because the two nerve centers work alternately instead of only one center working without any rest. Second, keep in high spirits and learn to concentrate on your work. Odd thoughts should be cleared out as they weaken the stimulation of the main nerve centers functioning at that time. Imagine the hectic state of the nerve centers in a person who sits down to work, turns a page here and there, gets up to look for something and suddenly thinks of something else. How can he work well?

To work well, we must also know how to rest well. Some people think rest is identical to sleep. Sleep is an essential way of resting, of course, but neither the only way nor the active way. About eight hours of sleep or less a day is quite enough for an adult. Too much sleep will only weaken one¡¯s brain and health. An active way of resting is to take part in sports and cultural activities. Sports is the more important of the two as it helps to keep all the organs in good order, promotes blood circulation and steps up metabolism.

The organizational culture of an organization is determined by management¡¦s base on philosophy, values, vision, and goals. This will determine how employees, individuals, and groups will act as a whole through people-organizational relationships toward the achievement of human, organizational, and social objectives. The culture will determine the type of leadership, communication, and group dynamics within the organization. Employees perceive this as the quality of work life, which directs their degree of motivation, which results in the outcome of performance, individual satisfaction, and personal growth and development (Leadership-Organizational Behavior).

There are four major models or frameworks that organizations operate out of

„X Autocratic Power with a managerial orientation of authority. Employees are oriented towards obedience and dependence to the manager and/or supervisor. The employee need that is met is subsistence. The performance result is normally minimal.

„X Custodial This model is based on economic resources with management being the orientation of the money. This results in the employees need for security and benefits and dependence on the organization. The employee need that is met is security and the performance result is passive cooperation.

QUESTION The Human Condition is a continuing mystery. How have the texts you’ve studies enhanced and extended your knowledge?

The human condition refers to our attempts at contemplating the continuing mystery of life and overcoming its many emotional barriers. It embraces the harshness of reality and beauty of imagination human existence. Utilising a variety of literary, visual and filmic devices, Robert Frost’s poem, Mending Wall, Sam Mendes’ film, American Beauty, John Keats’ poem, Bright Star and David Turnley’s photograph, 68 all seeks to explore the importance of human thought and need for fulfilment. Together, these composers provide us with a fuller understanding of our own struggles and discoveries in life, thus extending and enhancing our insight into the human condition.

Robert Frost’s poem, Mending Wall, is a dramatic monologue written in iambic pentameters to describe the mending of physical and psychological barriers humans create in order to protect their ideals and beliefs. Frost establishes a sense of mystery and creativity through the inverted syntax in the first line, “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall”. This “wall” is both a tangible barrier and a symbol of isolation between Frost and his neighbour. The composer refers to the physical barrier through natural imagery, “gaps even two can pass abreast” and evokes mystery with, “No one has seen them made or heard them made” to evoke the secretive and continuing destruction of nature. On the other hand the psychological barriers are demonstrated by the composer’s expression of his distance with his neighbour, “beyond the hill” and “set the wall between us”.

The human power of imagination and its ability to transcend the mundane is displayed when the persona personifies boulders as “loaves” and “balls” and shows his playfulness by referring the mending process to an “outdoor game”. Frost again stresses the significance of imagination and juxtaposes this with his neighbour’s stubborn acceptance of traditional beliefs by rhetorically questions, “Why do fences make good neighbours?” He then uses logical sequencing of answers, “Isn’t it where there are cows? But here there are no cows.” thus positioning the responder to see the unthinking nature of some individuals.

The simile, “like an old-stone savage armed” and primitive imagery of his neighbour, “he moves in darkness” further elucidates the concept that his neighbour is devoid of individual thought. The clich at the end of the poem, also a repetition of the old saying finally confirms the simple acceptance of the neighbour.

Robert Frost explores the delicate interaction between humans while similarly, Sam Mendes’ film American Beauty, a black comedy also encompasses the emotional barriers between humans and their ultimate quest for fulfilment. The “Beauty” in the title could allude to the recurring motif of roses in the film or the character of Angela, the idealised female appearance as well as referring to the Western preconceived notion of beauty.

The film is a declaration of the expression of true feelings juxtaposing with the pretentious disguises of conformity. This is represented through characters Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) and Carolyn Burnham (Annette Bening). During Lester’s so-called midlife crisis or rather re-birth, he realises the lack of honesty in his life and rebels against everyday routines. It is shown through the mis en scene effect at the tense family dinner where a long table separates Lester and Carolyn, symbolic of their distance and psychological barrier. The warm lighting depicts a friendly environment which contrasts with the intensity of the predicament. Lester then releases his inner emotions by smashing dishes and transcend into a role of dominance in the family.

Contrarily, Carolyn is obsessed with creating an image of success, striving for occupational satisfaction and materialistic fulfilment. There are close-ups of her exaggerated smiles while grooming her impeccable rose garden, captured through a series of mid-shots and long-shots. Her costuming and possessions e.g. car, house all paints a picture of confidence and success. However, her restraints of allowing her true feelings to show creates an emptiness in her life demonstrated by her need to find new happiness in a man other than her husband.

American Beauty is an exploration into complex human interactions, emphasising the need for self-discovery and therefore change. The film attempts to address the perceptions of beauty and solve the continuing mystery behind its illusions.

Conversely, John Keats’ poem Bright Star illustrates the mystery of life by dwelling on ideas of permanency and want for interaction between humans. Written in sonnet form, the poem involves two opposing ideas - the octet being representative of the desire to stay constant and unchanging while the sestet demonstrates the desire for connection.

The idea of permanency is shown through the persona’s reference to the “Northern Star” which is a symbol of consistency and fixity. Keats appreciates the star’s characteristic of immortality and addresses it, “would I were steadfast as thou art” yet he does not want to be isolated like the star, “Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night”. However, detachment is shown with the personification of the star as if its “watching” as opposed to participating.

A grandeur and stately tone is established through infinitive imagery in the octet, “eternal lids apart” and “sleepless Eremite” and cold, remote imagery such as, “mask” and “snow”.

The volta, “No, yet still steadfast, still unchangeable” marks the change in opinion of the composer. The word “still” acts as a pun and enhances the idea of consistency. Keats then refers to the desire of connection with his lover, “Pillowed upon my fair love’s ripening breast”. The tone becomes yearning and sensual through images of love and gentleness, “fall and swell” and the oxymoron “sweet unrest”.

The repetition of “still” gives connotation to the persona’s want for time to stop forever and let him live eternally in one everlasting beautiful moment i.e. with his lover.

Bright Star demonstrates the magnificence and beauty of the human mind i.e. the positive side of life while David Turnley’s photograph 68 captures a depressing close-up, image of a salient crying woman. The context could be determined through the ethnic patterned scarf she wears covering her head suggesting she is of Muslim background.

A strong sense of isolation and anxiety is depicted through the figure’s body language her lowered head, small, hunching shoulders and both hands pressing against her mouth. She wears a ring, being a symbol of prosperity juxtaposes the realistic state of this destitute woman.

The positioning of this elderly woman is also demonstrative of her emotions. She is placed towards the right hand side of the picture which leaves large blurred background on the left suggesting that there is something unknown behind her i.e. her past which could be the cause of her insecurity. The eye direction of the figure is to the upper right, outside the photo’s frame which signifies her detachment and uncertainty.

The level of modality in this picture is very high, achieved through lighting and the absence of colour. Natural light pours from the top right corner creating shadows on the woman’s wrinkled features and bony hands which allude to her deficient state of health as well as adding a degree of concealment and darkness to the overall effect of the photograph. Similarly, the absence of colour suggests that the salient figure is shown as she really is - without any modifications - emphasising the severity of her condition.

In capturing the harshness of reality, David Turnley has presented a distressingly emotional side of the human experience audiences could all relate to. The human condition is portrayed as frail and fearing which is a continuing mystery mankind is seeking to solve and overcome.

Through the engagement of the harshness of reality, the beauty of imagination and the importance of human interaction in these texts, our understanding of the continuing mystery of the human condition is broadened and enhanced and thus we can embrace our own life experiences with more wisdom.

In The Tale of Genji, by Murasaki Shikibu, the main character, Genji, grows out of the darkness of his mother’s early passing. The void left behind, and subsequent search for a true love is the motivation for much of the goings on in Genji’s life.

For most of the first chapter, Genji is a child. He is the love child of the Emperor and Kiritsubo and the most beautiful child anyone has ever seen. His stunning good looks eventually earn him the nickname, the Shining Lord. Because his mother died when he was still a toddler, Genji grew up not knowing what she looked like, but he knew how remarkable a woman she must have been because of how much the Emperor missed her. It was because of the Emperor’s love for Genji’s mother that he clung to Genji so tightly. The Emperor spent as much time with Genji and raised him himself as much as his position would allow.

For years, the Emperor missed Kiritsubo terribly. After trying to find a replacement for her, but to no avail, with a heavy heart, he concluded that he would not find anyone like her. Then he received word from his Dame of Staff that a former Emperor had a daughter, known for her beauty and brought up by her mother. She had a striking resemblance to Kiritsubo. The Emperor was stricken and he married her right away. Genji heard the buzz around Fujitsubo about how she looked a great deal like his late mother, Kiritsubo. When Genji saw her, he too loved her immediately. He would flirt with her in his boyish way by bringing her flowers and autumn leaves.

At the end of chapter one, the Emperor arranges a marriage between Genji and the daughter of the Minister of the Left, Aoi. She is somewhat older than Genji who is 1 when they marry. Because Aoi is of high rank, as her mother is Princess Omiya, this assures that Genji will remain among the high ranks and be well taken care of. This loveless marriage, however, was only a constant reminder to Genji that he was without a true love.

At the start of chapter two, Genji has gone from 1 to 17 with no mention of the time in between. It had been raining for several days and Genji, along with many others, are cooped up in the palace. Genji is keeping company with his brother-in-law and closest friend To-no-Chujo. After playing music together, To-no-Chujo asks Genji if he can read some of the letters in the cabinet in his room. Genji answers by stating that there is nothing of interest in the letters and he is welcome to look. This sparks the start of what is known as the “Rainy Night Discussion”.

To-no-Chujo, The Chief Left Equerry, and the Fujiwara Aide of Ceremonial all take turns trying to impress each other with stories of their love conquests all with the goal of trying to define the perfect woman. They talk mostly about women of middle birth because they are, according to To-no-Chujo, “the ones among whom you can see what a girl really has to offer and find ways to distinguish one from another” (page ). Women of high rank are pampered and keep many things hidden, while low ranked women don’t even matter. They talk of a jealous woman, nice woman, and smart woman while Genji dozes in and out of their stories. It is made apparent that all the while, Genji’s thoughts linger on his idea of the perfect woman, Fujitsubo.

This “discussion” sees a transition in Genji’s character. The young, sweet, and innocent Genji becomes a playboy of sorts, even before the end of the chapter. The “discussion” is the direct grounds for the next few chapters, which follow Genji’s pursuit of women while he tries to perfect his seductive style. Because of Genji’s high rank, he leaves the discussion thinking that almost any woman will succumb to him.

His first attempt at a love affair after the “discussion” is with Utsusemi. Because of a directional taboo he finds himself at the crowded house of the Governor of Kii, whereabouts he comes upon Utsusemi. Much to Genji’s dismay, however, because she does not want to jeopardize her marriage to The Iyo Deputy, she turns Genji down. This shocks Genji. For a while, Genji tries to win over Utsusemi but eventually realizes his defeat. While Genji was somewhat dazed by Utsusemi’s rejection, he learned from his mistake and the experience is integrated into his developing sense of seduction.

His failed attempt at finding love with Utsusemi was not his first, nor will it be his last. Genji’s road to love is a bumpy one in this novel. As he looks to find his true love, he comes across many prospects. Our hearts go out to the glorious child who lost his mother and spends so many years trying to fill the void in his heart.

Dulce Et Decorum Est - Critical Response

Written by Madbhoy

A poem which I have recently read is “Dulce Et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen. The main point Wilfred Owen tries to convey in this poem is the sheer horror of war. Owen uses many techniques to show his feelings, some of which I’ll be exploring.

Wilfred Owen is a tired soldier on the front line during World War I. In the first stanza of Dulce Et Decorum Est he describes the men and the condition they are in and through his language shows that the soldiers deplore the conditions. Owen then moves on to tell us how even in their weak human state the soldiers march on, until the enemy fire gas shells at them. This sudden situation causes the soldiers to hurriedly put their gas masks on, but one soldier did not put it on in time. Owen tells us the condition the soldier is in, and how, even in the time to come he could not forget the images that it left him with. In the last stanza he tells the readers that if we had seen what he had seen then we would never encourage the next generation to fight in a war.

Owen uses imagery constantly to convey the conditions and feelings experienced during this war. Firstly I will be exploring Metaphor as it is used so much in this poem. The first metaphor which I will examine is “Haunting Flares” on line of the first stanza. This quote has so many connotations, my first opinion on this was that the flares which the enemy are firing to light up the battle field are said to be representing the souls of the soldiers fallen comrades. This could also be said to represent the power the enemy has on their own mortality as the bright flares would light up the battle-field exposing everything to their view, this indicates that the enemy always seem to have power upon the soldiers, almost godly. The second metaphor which I will explore is “An ecstasy of fumbling” on line one of the second stanza. This metaphor is significant as it describes the quick manner in which the soldiers will have been trying to put their masks on. The soldiers would have been trying to put their masks on in a hurry but due to their physical condition their minds would have been wanting them to go faster than their body would have been allowing them, this is why there is said to be a “Fumbling”. The term “Ecstasy” would normally suggest a time of extreme emotion, normally joy, however in this situation it is used as a term of irony as this is a completely bewildering time for the men (another extreme emotion).

Owen uses simile to explain better the situation faced by the men. Simile is often used by poets and is used mainly for description in Dulce Et Decorum Est. The poet provides us with these similes as he has simplified them to a state in which we would understand them. An example of this would be “flound’ring like a man in fire or lime…” this example makes us aware of the movement which this soldier would use during the gas attack “flound’ring”. Another implication this simile has is that the soldier would not be in control of the situation as if a man was on fire he would not be able to put it out simply and this would be similar with the soldier used in the example as this would be an unusually helpless situation for him to be in. Owen does not use simile as much as the previous kinds of imagery.

There are several image groups used in this poem, two of which I will be reviewing. The first image group is “Sleep or Dreams”. Owen often refers to many subconscious states like the afore mentioned one, the reason why he uses these references so frequently is that war is made apparent to the reader as being a subconscious state as the realities often seem to be too hard to except, an example which backs up my opinion is “Men marched asleep”. The poet often refers to dreams. I believe part of the reason for this is that by dreaming you are escaping from the physical reality and surroundings and due to the horror and constant threat of death the soldiers would constantly be dreaming of home and their loved ones. However, Wilfred Owen could be looking at dreams being constant reminders of some past atrocity, similar to a recurring dream “ In all my dreams, before my helpless sight he plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning”. The second and final image group I will be studying is “Sea or Drowning”. Owen uses this image group usually to describe the situation of a soldier or soldiers during the poem. An example of when Owen uses this method “As under a green sea I saw him drowning” this sentence is used when Owen views a soldier suffering the consequences of a Gas attack. The gas attack seems to be one of the main topics in the poem and as a result this particular piece of imagery is based around it as every word or sentence to do with sea or drowning is based around this significant event “Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light”

In Dulce Et Decorum Est there are many different sound types used, alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme etc. One of the sound types I will be looking at is Full or perfect rhyme. This sound type is significant as in Dulce Et Decorum Est at the end of each sentence rhymes with the one before the last. This is significant as when reading this poem you notice this rhyming scheme and take more time to stop and ponder over the significance of the language it is based around and what connotations that word has “Bent double, like old beggars under sacks” and “Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs”. This is one of the most effective rhyming schemes in the poem. Due to every second line rhyming this makes your remember what the poet was trying to put across in the previous lines as all the different lines have a way of tying in with one another.

Through reading this poem several times I decided that the message from the poem is that war is full of horror and there is little or no glory. Methods which I found most effective were Full rhyme and metaphor.

Overall Wilfred Owen shows that there is no triumph in war, he does this by using the dying soldier as an example. His main point is that the old saying “Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori” is a lie.

“In the play Pygmalion, George Bernard Shaw satirizes the English society- its class system and its values”.

I agree with this statement. I believe that GB Shaw uses humour, sarcasm and characters of this play to satire English society. The main characters he has chosen for this are Eliza Doolittle, Alfred Doolittle and the Eynsford Hills. Eliza plays the roll of the poor flower girl who is turned into a middle class society citizen. Alfred Doolittle is Eliza’s father formerly a dustman, but now a wealthy but unhappy man. The Eynsford Hills have the upper class status but the wealth of a middle class family.

Eliza, being one of the main characters, is used to satire the class system and the way that people are ranked. Professor Henry Higgins has transformed this lower class common flower girl with an amusing cockney accent into a charming, well-mannered, young lady. The poor flower girl is now accepted in the higher society and can mingle easily with them because she speaks and behaves like them. No one, at any stage, suspects her of being a flower girl from a much lower class. Neppomuck, the Hungarian ex- student of Higgins theorises that Eliza is a Hungarian princess because she speaks English so perfectly. This shows how well Eliza has carried out her task, by leading someone to believe she is of royal blood instead of a common girl from the gutters of Drury Lane. But after the “experiment”, Eliza is left in a difficult situation. She regrets that she ever came to Higgins, and wishes that she had stayed in Drury Lane. Her origins are still working class but she also has the traits of an upper class lady. She has grown accustomed and settled into her new life which makes it hard to return to her previous way of life, but does not have the money to live in her current lifestyle. Though her father, Alfred Doolittle, now has a lot of money, he cannot provide for Eliza because he is responsible for supporting other people who are less fortunate than him.

Alfred Doolittle is a man of no morals and believes that life should be lived to the fullest. He was a common dustman, until he unexpectedly inherited a large amount of money from an American millionaire, Ezra D. Wannafeller, who had mistook a sarcastic remark by Henry Higgins about Doolittle being “the most original moralist in England”. Alfred does not like middle class morality because he is satisfied with what he has. For example, when Colonel Pickering offers him ten pounds instead of five pounds, Doolittle refuses, as he is not interested in saving money for the future and would rather spend five pounds on drinks than spend five pounds and save another five pounds. Alfred Doolittle wants no worries or responsibilities. He has been married several times before, but cannot seem to keep a stable relationship. He also kicked Eliza out of the house when she was only a teenager with no money, leaving her to fend for herself. GB Shaw shows the irony of this poor man who can only just live on the money he earns becoming a middle class man in society who is well off - but Alfred does not want this life. He wishes to be the poor old dustman with no responsibilities because now, Alfred is expected to not only provide for himself and his new wife, but also for many other “relatives” and friends who are not as fortunate (or unfortunate from Doolittle’s point of view) as him.

essay writing service

GB Shaw demonstrates that this man who can earn three thousand pounds an year by lecturing would rather throw it all away and go back to his life of poverty with no cares or responsibilities.

The Eynsford Hills are from a high society and are respected by many people, even though they have little wealth. This is because of the high class they were born in. They were born in the upper class but struggle to live on the money they have. Their status is high but their wealth is low. Those from the middle class could possibly have been richer than the Eynsford Hills but do not earn the respect that they are given.

In conclusion, these are the reasons I agree with the statement, “In the play Pygmalion, GB Shaw satirizes the English society- its class system and its values”. GB Shaw has shown through these characters that the class system and values do not always mean everything. A person of higher class than another may be wealthier and respected, but that does not necessarily mean that they are richer in heart and soul.

Firstly, I would like to thank the NSW Board of Studies for allowing me to present my point of view. I believe that what I have to say, and what I have to show you, will alter your perspective in terms of teaching the HSC Syllabus. My examples are derived from the Area of Study titled Changing Perspective.

In society, it is known that Visual Stimuli is an integral part of everyday life. Television, Computer games, Movies… Visual stimuli. Everything on television, from High Five to The Simpsons, attracts a young audience with the desire to teaching them something. Visual stimuli keeps a young person entertained and captivated, allowing them to learn from what they see. I, therefore, advise that The HSC syllabus be taught keeping in mind the fact that Visual stimuli is apart of everyday life and that young people respond well to it. Some teaching methods that can be used in teaching the HSC Syllabus in this manner are the Internet, and the Overhead projector.

(HAND OUT hand it out) The internet is possible the worlds fastest growing resource, providing tens of thousands of individuals and companies with information. It is, therefore, logical that Teaching should employ this valuable resource. (HAND OUT Refer to it) I have created a lesson plan based around the internet and a current text from the HSC Syllabus to allow you to see how such a resource can be utilized, the text titled Sturt’s Dreaming which appears as Text 4 of the Stimulus Booket for the Area of Study, Change.

If you would care to look at the sheets I have given you all, the first is a list of websites that the students will be asked to access in the School’s Computer Laboratory. All these websites contain valuable information about Captain Charles Sturt. The second sheet is a list of example questions that would be provided to the students by the teacher for them to answer. By answering these questions, the students would have to read and sift through the information on the websites, therefore, gaining knowledge of the context, language and techniques of the poem. This can help the students to understand how perspective can change through events that occur in life, which can be seen through text, with some background information about the time and circumstances of Charles Sturt. Some advantages of using the internet are that the internet is environmentally friendly because it minimises the amount of paper used by presenting the information on a computer, and it is relatively easy to use allowing students to refer back to the websites at a later date if needed.

The other Technological Resource I will be presenting for you is the Overhead Projector. This old, yet effective, form of technology has been a vital part of school life for many, many years. Nowadays, technological advances have allowed more compact, more versatile overhead projectors to be used, they do, however, utilise the same principle of mirrors and lights to project the images on a larger scale. To demonstrate how overheads can be used to teach the HSC Syllabus, I will show you some sample pictures and explain how they relate to Text 1, THE DOOR. (SHOW 1ST DOOR OVERHEAD) By looking at these overhead projections, you will be able to see how appearance matters and how perception can change. (SHOW ND DOOR OVERHEAD) Now look at this overhead. It’s a door. Pretty boring. We don’t feel anything about the door. But when we open the door, (UNCOVER THE REST) we are instantly affected by what is on the other side. By viewing these overheads, student can gain a better understanding of the text, The Door. The can explore, visually, their own feeling of the door before and after it is opened, drawing their own conclusion about what is implied by the Draught in the last stanza.

We all know that technology has changed, progressed, and evolved into the cars, televisions, mobile phones and high-speed internet connections that we utilize every day. With each evolution, life as we know it is altered, creating NEWER, FASTER, EASIER, MORE EFFECTIVE ways of living and working. It is therefore, essential to take on these technologies, use them, and provide our children with the most advanced methods of teaching, the most positive start to their career. The example methods I have shown you today from the current HSC Syllabus should be considered when revising teaching methods for the HSC course. Thankyou for your time.
