For every individual, authority has its own meaning, and every person has his/her own reason to obey and/or disobey the law. In life, we have all kind of forms of authority; its starts from parents, to teachers, to religion, to community, to police, and the media. Authority is the one that is invested with power, especially a government or body of government officials. A person has to obey all of the above examples, and if not he/she will face some kind of punishment. For example, if a mother tells a child not to play with fire and they still take matches and try to light it, a mother will punish her child in order for him/her not to do it again. In todays society it is very hard to talk about authority; you dont really know whats right and wrong about social obedience and social deviance.

The short story that we have read in class, On the Rainy River, by Tim OBrien, is about a young man who is 0 years of age and is drafted to war. It was the 168 American war in Vietnam. He hated the war, he thought that this war is purposeless. Tim thought that he is too good to fight in a war, as he stated, I was too good to fight for this war, too smart, too compassionate to everything. For the whole summer he took time to think about obeying or disobeying the authority and run to Canada. He tried to drive to Canada, however, he made a stop that has changed his life and his decision forever. He stopped in Tip Top Lodge, located in Minnesota, by the Rainy River, which separates Minnesota and Canada. This is where he stayed for a couple of days. He was twisting and spinning everything in his head. He didnt know if he should go to that war since he thought he is too good to die. A couple of days after staying there he became friends with a man named Elroy. He never told him what his reasoning was and what his plans were. That is, until Elroy took him to fishing on his last day on The Rainy River. He was twenty yards away from Canada and he couldve just jump and swim to Canada and save him self from the war, but he didnt; he obeyed the authority.

Tim didnt want to disobey his family, friends, his town, even to the people who were sitting Gobbler Caf on Main Street, he couldnt risk the embarrassment of being called a coward by them if he wouldve run. Like he said, I couldnt endure the mockery, or the disgrace, or the patriotic ridicule. He went to war, served in the Vietnam War, and then came back. He survived the war that he was so scared to face. Tim OBrien obeyed the authority and went to serve in the army; my personal story is totally contradictory to his.

In my life, my family was faced with authority as well. When we traveled throughout out life, we stooped in Israel. We started our life over, a new country, a new language- everything is new. Its as if youre reborn. Two years after we got used to the life style, we had a knock on the door that affected our life forever. When my father opened it, a sergeant passed him a letter. After my father opened the letter his hands where shaking, my mom started crying, and my brother was speechless. Back then, I didnt know what was going on and why everyone was in such a state of shock. Well it was the letter that said that my only brother was being drafted to war. In Israel it was the law that after you turn 16 years old you had to go to war. Its the law that you obey and go serve in the army, and have very little chance of surviving. In a couple of days, my father made a decision to move to the United State of America. He left everything-the new house, the new business, our friends and family. My father didnt want my brother to serve in Israeli army because he, just like Tim Obrien, didnt really know the reason why there was war, and since my dad served in Azerbaijan war with Armenia, he knew how tough it would be. My father disobeyed the law; he was faced with social pressure coming from our family members, from our friends, and from our community. Looking back now, I am thankful to my father and I think he did the right thing by disobeying authority. I dont care now that we didnt obey the authority, as long as my brother is safe and sound and does not have a big chance of dying in the cold hearted war for a piece of land. If you were to call all my fathers friends from high school, you might find only - out of maybe 15 men who survived and yet,, they are all on wheelchairs.

Another story that we read was, The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson. Its about a small town in which every year on June 7th, they have a lottery, which lasts only hours. It is a community of people under an authority that just one person has made up. I totally disagree with this. How would anyone make a law and make everyone abide by it? Killing decent people, with cold heartedness by throwing stones at them, especially by their family members? The social pressure that was involved was the person who was chosen, he/she was the one who really had to suffer. This decision was based on one person who chooses the one that he doesnt like and makes the whole community throw stones on them. The community did not want to do it but they obeyed authority and still did it.

It is based on all the village people getting together and having a lottery. Everyone picks a number and that person is the one who is going to be stoned. Its about Mr. Hutchinson picking up a number and having a black spot, and his wife tried to back him up tried to say it wasnt fair. Mr. Summers gave them a second chance by allowing the whole family to try to get a number and Mrs. Hutchinson got the black spot. They put Tessie Hutchinson in the center and everyone including her family would throw stones at her until she would die. This is the kind of authority that you must disobey. But in that village nobody even entertained that thought because it was fiction. What Im trying to say is sometimes the law and the authority is not right and people are being punished for no reason.

If in todays world I will be faced again with a responsibility as a citizen of the United States to go serve in a war against Iraq, I have no doubt about my father making another major decision to pack our bags and be on the way to Canada, running away from the draft. Because my father didnt disobey the law first in Azerbaijan and then in Israel, to come to United States to save his kids from serving in the army and still having us to fight with Iraq. I think my father would make the right decision for me and I dont think I should take a chance at dying in an army that only president Bush wants.

The circumstances are that I think sometimes it is necessary to disobey the law-if it means doing something that would be beneficial to my family in the long run. For example, President Bush wants war with Iraq. Why should the innocent kids be drafted to war and why must a million kids die because of it? I would definitely ask the president these questions and ask him how he would feel if he was the one who ended up being the victim? I am sure he would not respond in the same way. People dont know how bad things are until the issues affect them directly.

AMADOU DIALLO, ABNER LOUIMA,

RACIAL PROFILING

Introduction In today’s civilization minorities of all different cultural backgrounds are still being targeted as criminals, and a dominant threat to society because of their race. Which brings me to outline the topic RACIAL PROFILING and how it coincides with the Amadou Diallo case. Then I will proceed onto the Abner Louima case, and give some background information on this topic.

Starting in March 00 Governor Jim McGreevey signed a bill into law that stated that if a law enforcement officer is found to have committed racial profiling they might face a 5-year imprisonment charge and $15,000 fine. However, this person has to be found committing this act twice for it to considered racially motivated. Also, if there is bodily harm found on the victim the charges to the officers might exceed to 10 years imprisonment.

Racial Profiling as defined by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) is any police-initiated action that relies on the race, ethnicity or national origins of an individual rather than the behavior of an individual or information that leads the police to a particular individual who has been identified as being, or having been engaged in criminal activity.

Which brings me to the Amadou Diallo case where a -year-old West African immigrant was killed by a vague description. This incident takes place when four plain-clothes undercover policemen received information over the radio that they were looking for a rapist in the area. While looking for this rapist they saw Diallo at his house and figured he could have been the rapist and told him to stop moving and put his hands in the air. Diallo then reached for his wallet to show the officers that he was not the rapist but that’s when the tragedy happened. 41 bullets were fired at Diallo but only 1 actually entered his body.

Now this incident is more than likely to happen again, because like usual the police officers found a way to beat the system and they were acquitted of all charges and Diallo’s memory is known as a tragic ERROR!

Abner Louima a Haitian immigrant was arrested at a Haitian nightclub, but on his way to the 70th precinct he was beaten with a radio up side his head, then when he arrived at the precinct officer Justin Volpe said that Louima had punched him and he would take over. Volpe and another officer took Louima into the precinct bathroom and in there pushed a plunger 5 to 6 inches up Louima’s rectum which caused his intestine to rip and other damages to his stomach area. Volpe also stuck the plunger in Louima’s mouth, which damage most of his teeth.

They then placed Louima in a holding cell for three hours while he was bleeding then took him to Coney Island’s hospital where they gave a fake report of what happened. They reported that Louima’s condition was caused by homosexual intercourse. Moreover, Louima told a nurse at the hospital that this wasn’t true and she called Internal Affairs which at first they seemed reluctant to help, but 48 hours later they finally went to investigate the incident.

Volpe later pled guilty and is currently serving a 0-year sentence. The jury also found Officer Charles Schwarz guilty of assisting in the assault and four other officers guilty of lying to authorities about the incident.

Under the terms of the settlement Louima will receive $8.75 million, with $7.15 million being paid by the City of New York and $1.65 million being paid by the Patrolmens Benevolent Association (PBA). Louimas original claim sought $155 million. Louimas attorney claimed that the city erected a blue wall of silence and lies to obstruct justice.

In closing, I leave with a quote that Bruce Springsteen sung in one of his songs titled “AMERICAN SKIN (41 SHOTS)”. Promise me if an officer stops you’ll always be polite, never run away and promise mama you’ll keep your hand in sight, you can get killed just for living in your American skin.

The Alchemist

A Book Report on The Alchemist By Paulo Coelho Submitted to Ms. K. Deshotel By Timothy Zimmerman English IV AP(G) - hour 1 Northshore High School 0/1/000 Biography of Author - Paulo Coelho was born in Rio de Janiero in 147 and before his career as a best-selling author, he was a playwright, theatre director, hippie, and popular songwriter for some of Brazils leading pop artists. In 186 he took a pilgrimage along that Road of Santiago and this would be the center of the plot of the book, The Pilgrimage, which was published in 187. His second book was named The Alchemist and was published in 188. This book has gone to number one in countries and Coelho has been regarded as the most widely read contemporary writers. The Alchemist was one of the top ten international best sellers of 18. His work has been published in more than 100 countries and is translated into 4 different languages. He has been awarded a variety of prestigious awards from many different countries. He today lives in South America with his family. Main Characters - The Shepherd - This was the boy through whose eyes the story was told. He followed his personal legend to the fullest and never let up with his dream. He went all over the land and was able to realize the treasure that he had been so close to in the beginning of the novel. The King - He was the one that gave the shepherd the two stones that would supposedly help him whenever he had a rough time deciding about what to do. He made the boy give him ten percent of his flock, because you should never promise something that you dont have. The Englishmen - This was the man that the boy met on his trip to the pyramids. He was the one who turned the boy onto the idea of the alchemist and the masterwork. Before this he had never known of the alchemist and the great things that he could do in the world. The Alchemist - This is the man that he met in the desert and he helped the shepherd to lead the people from the danger that was imminent from the war. He also allowed the boy to follow his legend and realize his dream. Summary - The story begins when the shepherd boy stopped for the night in a church with a sycamore tree growing out of the middle. He told of the easy going life of the shepherd and how his parents had wanted to become a priest. He had attended all of the schooling, but had decided against it at the last minute. He had wanted to see the world and he felt that the best way to do this was to go and become a shepherd. He said that the life of a shepherd is easy and carefree and he felt like that this was the way that he wanted to spend his life. He was anticipating seeing the daughter of a man who would buy the wool from his sheep when he arrived in the town that he would come to in another couple of days. He thought that he might actually settle down and get married to this girl if she would like to. He had been having a recurring dream about him at the pyramids in Egypt. There he would be able to find all of the treasure in the world and to realize what would come to be called his personal legend. So, the next town that he went to he went to a fortuneteller and asked her if she could help him out of his dilemma. She was unclear about what to do, but she made him promise to give him a percentage of his treasure if he ever found it. When he left the fortuneteller, he went and sat in the park where he would have been content to read his new book. He was not in a good mood for talking with others when the old king approached him and tried to strike up a conversation with him. He told the boy that everyone has a personal legend that he has to fulfill at some time in his life. He tells him that his could be found at the pyramids because of the dreams that he has been having lately. He tells him that he will help him if he will give him ten percent of his herd, because you should never promise anything that you dont have yet. He sold all of his sheep and he was given ummim and thummim, the two rocks that would help him make any decisions that he was unable to make. He took to the road and traveled to the northern tip of Africa. There he was setting off with all of his money in his pocket and set to a bar where he didnt speak the same language as any of the people there. He was taken for a fool and all of his money was taken in the first few hours. He stayed in the town for a while and he went into a shop that sold crystal. He helped the man to clean all of the crystal and while he was there, two people came in and bought crystal. The owner thought that this was a good omen and that he should try to keep the boy around. Since he didnt have any money he stayed on for eleven months and greatly improved the mans shop. When he finally left he had enough money to do with what he wanted and he set off to fulfill his personal legend. He traveled to the pyramids by way of northern Africa. About half way through his trip he came onto an oasis that was in the middle of a war between two native tribes. The rules of war said that the oasis should be a safe haven for all of the people that were traveling through the desert. This is where he met the alchemist, the man that would help him to realize his personal legend. By going off into the desert at night, he learned all about the masterwork and the many things that he needed to do in order to become a true alchemist. He began to have a dream about a group of rebels attacking the oasis because they thought that the travelers would be taking up arms against them. The boy went to the men who were in charge of the oasis and told them of the impending doom that was coming onto the oasis. They didnt believe that this dream was an omen but they gave him one shot. The rebels did attack and they were able to fend off all of the assailants. The boy was hailed as a hero and he went off into the desert to seek his personal legend. Here he was forced to make a decision about whether or not to leave behind the woman that he had met and had decided to marry. He said that he would return later and he did. This was after he found out about his treasure that he wanted for such a long time. He finally figured out that his treasure was in the sycamore tree that was growing out of the middle of an old church. He returned to his homeland and had his treasure intact and was able to live happily ever after. Theme - The main theme of this novel was that you should follow your personal legend to the fullest. Throughout his life the boy had been discouraged and could have given up on his dream. But, this would have caused a void in his life. This is sort of like the old man who owned the crystal shop, who would not take a pilgrimage because he would have nothing left to look forward to in his life. When the boy was leaving though, he did decide to take the pilgrimage and probably did not regret the fact that he had done something to prove his faith. The Boy faced many obstacles in his lifetime but stayed true to what the omens had told him and also what his personal legend had been. In the end he realized the legend and found what he thought to be true happiness. Analysis - The thing that particularly annoyed me about this book was the fact that was that the theme was ever changing. Within the main theme there were many other small themes that helped to develop the main theme, but added to the confusion of the novel. The thing that I liked about this book was that it was very straightforward and left nothing up to the imagination. If I were to rewrite this book I would change it by adding in a little more bad things that happen to the main character to show the real hardships that he had faced while chasing his personal legend. If I would have had the opportunity to speak to the boy in the book I would have told him that he should have stayed on at the crystal shop because he had a good thing going and he could have made a lot of money and bought his own happiness and realized his personal legend in his own rite. One thing that reminded me of another book that I read was In the Lake of the Woods, because both of the main characters were trying to run away from what had been in their lives to find something better. I would recommend this book to anyone who was undecided about what their life was meaning to them. This book really gives them insight about their lives and that someone is worried about them and that there is something that they have to look forward to, like the crystal merchant.

Toy Box resembles a toy a child would like to play with as well as store some toys inside. The painting name, combined with the characters smile, seems to invite the viewer and suggests us to feed him toys. We get this feeling that our toys would be safe held inside the jolly sphere shaped toy box. Once realizing the dark black back round we see that the smile might be deceiving and the glowing face is trying to trick you into placing toys inside without compensating for what might happen to them.

Against the black back round the whiteness of the sphere helps it to almost bounce off the painting like a ball but is held to the canvas by illuminating reflections found around the base of the sphere and foreground. The dark colored illuminating lights are soft and painted in similar tones and suggest a cushion for the playful yet deceptive sphere to rest and prey on it’s next victims toys.

Toy Box is a playful painting and to a child may seem harmless. With the characters cheery smile and inviting eyes a child might see no consequences if they fed a couple toys to the character. We as adults might have second thoughts as the dark blackness of the back round might symbolize a black hole and toys once swallowed by this playful figure would be trapped in orbit for eternity.

As I participate in activities where I am the leader I make sure that I work with my peers and listen to their ideas in hopes that we can join together to devise a creative plan of action.

I pride myself on being a good role model, not just in my home and school, but also in my community. I have partaken in many activities that served to help the community. As a tradition since I was little, every year my family and I take a trip to various nursing homes around the holidays, leaving them with baked goods and just spending quality time. This is something that I hope to continue and pass down when I have a family of my own. I am also a responsive giver to the “Give a Kid a Coat Foundation”.
