Southwest Airlines Co. (Southwest) is a major domestic airline that provides primarily shorthaul, high frequency, point-to-point, low-fare service. Today Southwest operates over 00 Boeing 77 aircraft in 58 cities. Southwest has the lowest operating cost structure in the domestic airline industry and consistently offers the lowest and simplest fares. Southwest also has one of the best overall Customer Service records. Objective and Scope

‘The mission of Southwest Airlines is dedication to the highest quality of Customer Service delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and Company Spirit.’ (SouthWest.com)

Southwest Airlines will fly any plane, as long its a Boeing 77, and let passengers sit anywhere they like, as long as they get there first. Sticking with what works, Southwest has expanded its low-cost, no-frills, no-reserved-seats approach to air travel throughout the US to serve about 60 cities in 0 states. To curb maintenance and training costs, the airline uses only Boeing 77s; it operates about 60. Southwest offers ticketless travel to trim back-office costs and operates its own reservation system. corporate culture and only one strike during its 0-year history. It has also enjoyed straight profitable years. Southwest is expanding service to the eastern US.

Location Strategy

Southwest currently serves 5 airports in 58 cities in 0 states. Based

in Dallas, Southwest currently operates more than ,700 flights a day.

The objective of location strategy is to maximize the benefit of location to the firm. Companies make location decisions relatively infrequently, usually because demand has outgrown the current plants capacity or because of changes in labor productivity, exchange rates, costs, or local attitudes.

Location options include

· Expanding an existing facility instead of moving

· Staying at current location while opening branches elsewhere

· Shutting down existing location and starting over at a new one.

There are 5 factors that effect location decisions. They are

1. Market economics

. Better international communications

. More rapid travel operations

4. Ease of capital flow between branches

5. Cheaper labor

For example, Southwest airlines recently accounced future growth plans. On June , 00, Southwest will initiate new nonstop service between Chicago Midway and San Diego with three daily nonstop flights. A seven-day advance purchase fare of $8 each way based on a round-trip purchase is available on this new nonstop service through June . On the same day, Southwest also will add two daily nonstop flights between Phoenix and Orange County, bringing to five the total of daily nonstop round-trip flights between the two cities. Southwest

Airlines are utilizing the location strategy of staying at current location while opening branches elsewhere.

Managing Quality

Managing Quality is essential to any business. Quality, itself, is the ability of a product or service to meet customer needs. Quality does not only rely on the

typical finished goods or related services. Quality is based on and encompasses many different aspects. Quality is important because it is used as a basis for a company’s reputation. Perceptions about a company’s goods and services can be based on the reputation, whether good and bad. Southwest ranked second among companies across all industry groups, and first in the airline industry in the magazine’s 00 America’s Most Admired Companies List.

At Southwest Airlines, they have always governed the way they conduct business. It highlights their desire to serve Customers and gives Southwest direction when o make service-related decisions. Southwest feels it is another way of saying, we always try to do the right thing!. Their customer focus and commitment has led the way to the airline industrys best cumulative consumer satisfaction record, according to statistics accumulated and published by the U.S. Department of Transportation. In addition, Southwest’s bold decision to maintain its operations at status quo post-September 11 has enabled it to gain market share. However, as the industry continues to ‘ramp up’, industry pricing is likely to remain under pressure.

Key Investment Positives

Southwest is regarded as the best situated US airline (Citigroup valuation). Southwest possesses the lowest unit operating costs and the strongest financial position. With the rest of the commercial airline system having cut about 0% capacity following the terrorist assaults (NY Times November 1, 00), only

Southwest has maintained its full flight schedule. The airline is likely to gain market share, because some other carriers have shut down their low-cost airline subsidiaries. Southwest could benefit in the intermediate term it maintains the status quo. It concentrates mainly on flights to small cities, avoiding congested airports in metropolitan areas. Moreover, Airline industry officials generally believe that larger, international carriers more likely be terrorism targets. Southwest should start growing again before the rest of the industry, as the airline is to expand capacity by taking delivery of new planes throughout 00. This will further accelerate Southwest’s market-share gains.

Financial Strength

Southwest in financial terms is the strongest carrier in the United States, if not the world. The company generated positive cash flows and was profitable in the 4th quarter of 001 (Southwest’s annual report), when the rest of the US Airline industry had losses totaling about $ billion in the worst period in aviation history. Southwest’s ratio of debt to total capitalization was 40% at the end of 001, when the company had $. billion in cash. Southwest focuses on short-term stabilization and maintenance of its cash position. Lower fuel prices and travel-agent commissions should produce about $80 million in annual savings, offsetting expected security and insurance costs. Southwest plans to increase yields and fares steadily through 00, though revenue per available seat mile faces pressure from weak demand. The airline’s capital spending in 001 totaled

almost $1 billion, and Southwest has targeted outlays of about $600 million for 00 and $1.1 billion for 00.

Simple Operating Model with Low Cost Structure

Southwest’s use of only one aircraft type, the Boeing 77, and its no-frills service and ticketless operations have enabled the carrier to maintain a low-cost structure, compared with its competitors. Southwest does not operate a hub and spoke system and does not have any international operations. Thus, security will not be as difficult for Southwest to enforce as anticipated for most other carriers.

Capacity Expansion

With many airlines worldwide having pared capacity 0% because of the unprecedented drop in customer demand following the hijacking attacks, the jetliner market is glutted and Southwest could buy used 77s at low prices. The carrier did not reduce its capacity after the terrorists attacks. As the rest of the industry struggles to resume growth, Southwest plans to receive 1 new aircrafts and will retire some older planes over the course of 00, for a net addition of 11 airplanes representing capacity expansion of .5 to 4 %. The airline plans an annual capacity growth rate of 8% through 01.

Growth Opportunities

The airline has a history of communities petitioning for its service, which, in addition to market-share shifts to Southwest from the industry’s capacity reduction, should provide ample growth prospects. The chance to add aircraft at bargain prices could open the door for Southwest to augment its growth by becoming more of a contender in markets for long-haul flights, which account for only 15% of the routes in its system now. Southwest could shift its short-haul strategy to enter long-haul markets more aggressively. The airline may be a viable competitor to high-cost carriers in specific markets.

Internet Site

Southwest.com is one of the world’s busiest travel sites on the Web. The airline has added features for rental-car and hotel reservations to its Internet site, and plans more additions.

Productivity Advantage

Southwest derives its cost advantage from productivity and not labor-rate advantages. Southwest will need to continue to pay a market wage, but that it should be more successful than other carriers in achieving productivity gains to offset any increases. Therefore, the cost gap between Southwest and the rest of the industry could grow if airline consolidation continues.

Personnel Needs

Southwest employees more than ,000 employees throughout their system. Last year alone, Southwest reviewed 14,81 resumes, which resulted in 6,406 new hire employees in 001. Successful candidates must be an altruistic, outgoing person who likes to serve others and enjoys working with a team, we want you. If youre the kind of person who enjoys a more secure, more regimented, more inflexible, more rule-governed type of environment, that doesnt mean that youre a bad person, you are not compatible with Southwest’s personnel needs. Southwest has not had contested labor negotiations, which have occurred in most of the Airline industry. Agreements on new contracts should be reached more easily, as about 100,000 workers in the industry have been furloughed because of travel slump; Southwest has remained steadfast in not laying off any employees. Though Southwest appears mindful of gains by labor at other carriers, its pilots’ fortunes, i.e. stock options, have soared with the airline. Its pilots also are free to realize gains when options vest, rather than wait for retirement.

Key Investment Risks

Southwest’s operations make the carrier more appealing to the leisure traveler than the business traveler. In economic downturns, leisure travelers may reduce or eliminate discretionary travel.

Safety Concerns and Costs

Airlines face additional costs for new security procedures in the industry. New rules on luggage require all checked bags and their owners to be aboard each plane to get clearance. Also, starting in December 00, airlines must screen all luggage, which will require expensive new detection machines, installation of which also necessitate costly renovations at airports.

Increased Competition

In some markets, Southwest faces low-fare, low-cost airline alternatives. And other low-cost operators, JetBlue, have entered long-haul markets profitably. Southwest also is subject to competition form surface transportation, i.e. cars, trains, owing to the carriers short-haul routes.

Lack of Alliances with Other Airlines

These alliances provide passengers from other airlines to complete itineraries.

Antarctica is a beautiful place with its spectacular view. This magnificent continent is larger than either Europe or Australia, with Ice and snow covering 8 percent of Antarctica. Antarctica is the most extraordinary continent in the world. The Antarctic ice sheet is the worlds largest, and contains about seven-tenths of the world’s fresh water. This stunning and tremendous land is home to many animals such as penguins, polar bears, seals, whales, fish and much, much more. Most extraordinary of all facts is that Antarctica is actually a desert. Amazingly it gets the same amount of rain as the Sahara desert which is in fact less then 50mm. It is so cold and freezing in Antarctica that the temperature can even reach -8 Degrees Celsius.

Antarctica is the last vast wilderness on the planet. Its gigantic icebergs, mountain ranges and the emptiness of the polar plateau boggle the mind, while its temperatures, winds and weather send shivers down the spine. Its a place of extremes - beautiful and serene, savage and violent - and its scale is almost vast whether youre on the ground or viewing it from an aircraft.

The last decade has shown, much to the relief of many, tourism, no mining or oil drilling which has effected Antarcticas growth industry. Theres a good chance that the continent will remain a free and clean place of international cooperation and a better place.

Antarctica is a special place because it has less pollution than anywhere else in the world. It doesn’t have any smokestack industry, agricultural activity or permanent human population. From this point of view, Antarctica will only remain scientifically valuable if it is properly managed today with no mining or anything which can harm or destroy this splendid and gorgeous place. But unfortunately today dark shadows of pollution are looming over this remote continent and has to be stopped.

You may have heard about global warming. It seems that in the last 100 years the earths temperature has increased about half a degree Celsius. This may not sound like much, but even half a degree can have an effect on our planet. The main ice covered landmass is Antarctica at the South Pole, with about 0 percent of the worlds ice and 70 percent of its fresh water. Antarctica is covered with ice an average of ,1 meters which is about 7,000 feet thick. If all of the Antarctic ice melted, sea levels around the world would rise about 61 meters or ,000 feet. Which can be very harmful, but we can prevent this by causing less pollution and allowing no mining in Antarctica. But if pollution or mining was allowed in Antarctica then Antarctica will then become a garbage dump and effect us.

This historic site made a deep impression upon all on us. With its uniqueness and its beauty. Antarctica is also a wonder of scientific interest and the largest area on earth containing World Heritage Values. Mining is banned in the Antarctic by the Antarctic Treaty, and there are no known future plans by the Antarctic Treaty nations to reverse this decision.

In past times it was only heroes, scientists and explorers whoever visited the frozen expanses of the Antarctic - the coldest, windiest, iciest, driest, most barren and remote area in the world. To discover the uniqueness and the extraordinary wonders of this continent. Now when we think of Antarctica we think about its magnificence and beauty and also how important this continent is to us. We also think about the animals which live in and Antarctica and how they might die if mining or pollution was allowed in Antarctica.

So with all this information should we consider the fact that mining should be allowed in Antarctica? Well I certainly think no.

Ice Hockey has been a crucial part of my life ever since I was nine years old. In Elementary school when I started to first learn how to hold a hockey stick, I never imagined that after years of practice I would become such a commanding player on the ice. My parents used to cheer me on, and encourage me to practice more to keep me on schedule and continued to help me become the player I am today. During this time I met Richie who taught me so much and helped me become better at stick handling as well as a faster skater.

The best part of hockey is the exercise, and stress it relieves because without hockey I don’t know what I would have done to relieve the stress of being a teenager. The Cooper City Cowboys team introduced me to High School hockey. For most members of the team, the goal was to just win games. But for me, my main objective was to continue to get better. Through the Cowboys I discovered that in order to excel I needed to practice and do off ice training. As a result, I became stronger at leading my team and as a player.

Whether I continue Hockey or not, I know that I have already built a strong work ethic and skills in teaching others. My experiences with Ice hockey have taught me lessons that I will be to apply beyond high school. Hockey is the best thing that ever happened to me!

Tillie Olsens I Stand Here Ironing, and Alice Walkers Everyday Use, both address the issue of a mothers guilt over how her children turn out. Both mothers blamed themselves for their daughters problems. While I Stand Here Ironing is obviously about the mousy daughter, in Everyday Use this is camouflaged by the fact most of the action and dialog involves the mother and older sister Dee. Neither does the mother in Everyday Use say outright that she feels guilty, but we catch a glimpse of it when Dee is trying very hard to claim the handmade quilts. The mother says she did something she had never done before, hugged Maggie to me, then took the quilts from Dee and gave them to Maggie. In I Stand Here Ironing the mother tells us she feels guilty for the way her daughter Emily is, for the things she (the mother) did and did not do. The mothers neighbor even tells her she should smile at Emily more when you look at her. Again towards the end of the story Emilys mother admits my wisdom came too late. The mothers unknowingly gave Emily and Maggie second best. Both mothers compare their two daughters to each other. In Everyday Use the mother tells us that Dee is lighter than Maggie, with nicer hair and a fuller figure. She Fahning --speaks of the fire that burned and scarred Maggie. She tells us how Maggie is not bright, how she shuffles when she walks. Comparing her with Dee whose feet vwere always neat-looking, as if God himself had shaped them. We also learn of Dees style and the way she awes the other girls at school with it. The mother in I Stand Here Ironing speaks of Susan, quick and articulate and assured, everything in appearance and manner Emily was not. Emily thin and dark and foreign-looking at a time when every little girl was supposed to look or thought she should look a chubby blonde replica of Shirley Temple. Like Dee, Emily had a physical limitation also. Hers was asthma. Both Emily and Maggie show resentment towards their sisters. The sisters who God rewarded with good looks and poise. Emilys mother points out the poisonous feeling between the sisters, feelings she contributed to by her inability to balance the hurts and needs of the two. In Everyday Use we see Maggie eying her sister with a mixture of envy and awe. She thinks her sister has held life always in the palm of one hand, that no is a word the world would never say to her. Maggies mother seems to have reinforced this by being unable to say no to Dee also. This is what makes the point in the story when she finally does say no (regarding the quilts) such an important moment in Maggies life. The attitude of the mothers towards the polished daughters borders on contempt. I believe this is more evident in Everyday Use, demonstrated by the dream of the TV show. Also the description of Dee reading to them, burned us with a lot of knowledge we Fahning --didnt necessarily need to know, and again when she shoved us away...like dimwits. Its also pointed out that Dee and Susan are self-centered and selfish while Maggie and Emily are caring and giving I think in the end both of the mothers realize their daughters are okay the way they are. They come to accept their daughters limitations and cherish their quiet gifts. Not everyone can be polished and successful in worldly ways. Maybe thats why Maggie was smiling in the end, her mother finally accepted her as is.

Advertisment Activity

Claim

This particular advertisment is a two page layout found in the modern home magazine called Dwell. It has a verbal communication statement in the bottom right hand corner of the ad. “THE BOLD LOOK OF KOHLER.” This statement is regarded as the theme of the entire ad. In the top left hand corner you will see the phone number, web address, creator of the ad, and a short description of the products being sold. The statement reads, “The Purist Suite featuring sak bath and Purist lavatory. Tempting, isn’t it?” In the non-verbal communication part of the ad, you will find a remake of the Adam and Eve story as told in the Bible and the Holy Quran. While Adam and Eve stare at the tub and sink, and Eve holds the apple, it is implying that these products are tempting to humans just as the first human beings were tempted to eat the fruit. Both of the characters are dressed in skimpy and tight outfits that have designs of flowers and stems. This is sexually implying that the two are in transition of going in the tub together in root of their temptation. Through sexual and tempting desires, the products shown in the ad appeal to the consumer by selling them more than just what is shown in the advertisment. Using the proper techniques to project the ad in front of the reader, the author appeals to its audience by drawing a comparison of the beginning of time and the temptation of Eve.

Ground

Write my Essay on Advertising Adam and Eve

essay writing service

Adam is looking at the bath tub while Eve stars at the sink. The tub and sink are the products the ad is trying to sell its intended audience. The behavioral traits both characters are projecting are full of lust and desire. They see the sink and tub as their inner temptations of self indulgence. Their bodies are pointed straight toward the tub and the sink. This implies that the characters are giving the products their full and utmost attention. Adam has a robust and physically fit body. This suggests that only men with bodies as built as the character are allowed in the tub. Eve has a sexy body with slender legs and a more than average size breasts. This suggest that only women who fit this profile may wash their hands in the sink.

The apple tree in between both the characters is of historical reference. Eve has an apple in her hand. According to the story of Adam and Eve in the Bible, God forbid Eve to eat fruit from the tree. With her temptation of human desire, she picked and ate the apple against Gods will. This advertisment is portraying the very same story. Instead the products are being perceived as tempting.

This particular ad is found in the third page of the magizine and is a two page layout. Usually, advertisments in the front of the magizine are the most noticed. The authors name is also written in the top right hand corner beside the contact information.

Pathos The characters in the ad are catching feelings of lust, temptation, amazment, and human desire. Emotions are running high because the two are so tempted to lay in the bath tub together. Emotional stimulation is erected by the depiction of the clothing, body positioning, body figure, and the comparison of the apple tree to the biblic times of Adam and Eve.

Logos The author is not concerned with logic in depicting the advertisment. It is common sense that an apple tree will not be in the middle of a tiled bathroom floor. Also, ones humanistic desires as compared to Adam and Eve are not met with the sale of these bathroom facilities.

With the creative tecniques being implemented by the author of this advertisment, sexual temptations of desires are being used to sell these products to their audience. The illustration of physically fit bodies and skimpy outfits depicts the superficial attitude that only the good looking are allowed to use these lavatory facilities. With this in mind, the advertisment is obviously trying to sell sex and temptation with the products. The author is trying to target wealthy clientales whose average income rate is between 10,000/year to 00,000/year. Individuals with this houshold income range can be the only ones who can afford such a bathroom. The fact that an individual needs a bathroom illustrated in the ad shows that there would be no need for anyone below the income rate to acquire this lavatory. This advertisment appeals only to the upperclass men and women because it soley matches their tastes and preferences.

The men and women who have slim and fit features are also included in the target audience. The ones who look good enough as the characters in the ad are also potential clients of the company. The way both characters squint their eyes implies the lust and desire they have for the products being presented. The apple tree in the middle and the apple in Eve’s hand is a symbolic meaning of self indulgence. One is indulging in their desires if they were to go out and buy these products. The ad suggests that the temption is as comparable as to the story of Adam and Eve. These two depictions create a link to the claim and the ground of the Toulmin model.

The man walked down the lonely field before he was slain by a number of interesting beings. Was this a shrewd business move? It is hard to say, but I believe that the stock exchange will benefit from such a deal. Yes or no? Some people believe the former, others the latter. A difference in opinion comes about because so much subterfuge is involved in this area.Anyway, it can be argued that a number of shares in the region of 111100 would overload the business market. Sixty-four percent of business men think twice before entering into such a decision. What would you construe as beneficial to Britains economy? Obstinate demands; real timing - these twin factors really do comprise, when combined with impeccable timing and wit, the true bane of society. If you consider the financial implications, you will see exactly why. For the lesser able, I will explain.

Not that you are at fault, of course. The true blamant - and I will challenge anyone who says blamant is not a word to an adrenalin-fuelled duel involving motorbikes - is, of course, our feeder society. Mr. Blair knows its value; you know its value - only those plebs who see houses as enlarged igloos can not.

A stereotype is a generalization about a person or group of people without regard to individual differences. Even seemingly positive stereotypes that link a person or group to a positive trait can have negative consequences. Prejudice is prejudging or making a decision about a person or group of people without sufficient knowledge. Prejudicial thinking is frequently based on stereotypes. Discrimination is the denial of equal treatment (by individuals or institutions) in many arenas, including employment, education, housing, banking and political rights. Discrimination is an action that can follow prejudicial thinking. Stereotypes lead to prejudice, and prejudice leads to discrimination. Too often discrimination reinforces stereotypes, and the entire cycle is repeated. Our challenge is to break the cycle.

Matthew Wayne Shepard was born on December 1, 176 in Casper, Wyoming. He was the oldest son of Judy Peck Shepard and Dennis Shepard. Shortly after midnight on October 6, 18, two other young men took Matthew from a bar to a remote field about a mile outside of Laramie. Once there, these men took him out to a split-rail fence, mercilessly beat him with a pistol, tortured him, then tied him up onto the fence, and left him for dead. All the while he begged for his life. He was found late the next day at 6 p.m. by a two bikers, some 18 hours after the brutal attack. When the bikers first saw Matthew tied to the fence, they thought that what they saw a scarecrow, but realized that it was a person.

While Matthew lay dying in hospital, just a few miles away, a group of students from Colorado State University thought it would be funny to ride atop a homecoming float that featured a scarecrow figure designed to resemble Matthews battered body. The figure was wearing a sign that said, Im gay. An obscene message was painted across the back of the scarecrows shirt. It was supposed to be a joke. Matthew remained in a coma until Monday, October 1, when he died at 15 a.m. with his family at his bedside. Hospital officials said Matthew had a fracture from behind his head to just in front of his right ear and a massive brain stem injury which affected his vital signs, including his heart beat, body temperature and other involuntary functions. There were also approximately a dozen small lacerations around his head, face and neck. He was so badly injured in the attack that doctors were unable to operate. He never regained consciousness after being found, and remained on full life support.

This brings me to the heart of what I am trying to debate; what exactly causes a human being to act of this nature? I believe that how we were raised is directly responsible for the type of person we are today. I have asked a number of my friends and coworkers about what they think is main influence upon these acts, and .% of those people either claimed it to be the media’s fault or that it was the parents fault. It seems so surreal when I think about someone going out and committing these acts of hatred. The same question continues to run through my head, “Why or how could a human do this?”

What is the media? The media is any company or organization that in one way or another is trying to sell something to the public. It is a well-known fact that the media is always exposing children to things they may not have learned at home. These are often of a sexual or violent nature. When a hate crime is committed, a lot of times their will be an argument or debate over what brought that person to commit such an heinous act.

One excuse used, and most commonly used by the victim’s parents or relatives, is that what their child did was all because of what he or she saw on television or a movie, or what he or she heard on the radio. Because of all the violent and sexual nature found outside of households today, it makes the media an easy scapegoat.

The second most common excuse is placing all the blame on the parents. This is the one I stand behind the most. A parent should be held responsible for their child’s actions. It is so easy to say your child is troubled because of the media; the movies they watch and the music they listen to.

Who you are, how you act, and what you do, stem’s from how you were raised. Your parents, the people you’ve grown up around, the environment you were raised in, this is what makes you you. Think about this Do you ever question your own bias and prejudice? How would you feel if someone of another race or ethnic pointed out ways in which your attitude and behavior may be insensitive? Do you ever notice character stereotyping in TV, music or movies that is based on race?

Why are all these fingers pointed at the media, at movies packed to the brim with violence, music filled with lyrics of hate and crime? Simply because no one in this day of age is willing to take any sort of responsibility. When I say this I refer to ever child’s biggest influence in their life, their parents.

In a country founded on the notion of religious freedom, it is just amazing how many children are raised believing that there is something wrong with anyone who isn’t of their religion, race or sexuality. If more people in this country want to actually change their lives for the better they must be aware of their own attitudes and behavior towards those of a different race, religion and sex. They must be willing to take unpopular stands to support the rights of all people, not just people in the groups they belong to.

How do you feel when you encounter people who have mental and/or physical disabilities? What is your reaction? Have you ever thought about what it might be like if you had a disability? Do you react the same way toward people wearing glasses as you do toward people with hearing aids or in wheelchairs?

Looking for ways to fight discrimination? Learn more about something you fear or don’t fully understand. It seems to me though, that if more parents tuned into their child’s wavelength or made an attempt to be there when they need them or have a question. Everyone knows life throws a lot of curve balls and questions at you. And these days when people have guns, sex can kill you, and when jobs are hard to find, where does a young person go for solid answers? It’s hard for a child to grow up these day’s when there are so many parents who don’t care and teachers that don’t have the time. When movies are extremely vulgar and music is really violent. Television glamorizes these sorts of things; making it appealing to children, and when they can’t find someone to go to for answers, whom can they go to?

Form

Four closed couplets in mixed iambic and anapestic tetrameter, rhyming aa bb cc dd.

Line-by-Line Analysis

1- The speaker voices his displeasure over a bird that annoys him with its incessant “all day” (line ) singing. He wishes it would permanently “fly away” (line 1) from his house, presumably taking its singing elsewhere.

-4 The speaker, says he has tried chasing the persistent bird away by clapping his hands at it “from the door” (line ) when he feels he cannot stand to listen to it any longer. It is interesting to note that the speaker has not taken more extreme measures in getting rid of the bird, perhaps because he believes it would be wrong to harm it just because he doesn’t appreciate its singing.

5-6 At this point the speaker blames himself in part for own intolerance and unappreciative attitude towards the bird, since the bird can’t be held responsible for the way it sings or what it must sound like. He is aware of the fact that the bird just sings whatever it sings, however it sings it and when, because that is simply its nature. On the other hand, he cannot help being annoyed by it either.

7-8 As a result of his blameworthiness in the previous stanza, the speaker says there “must be something wrong” (line 7) with him because he dislikes the bird’s singing so intensely. He then generalizes over this in the end, concluding that there “must be something wrong” with anyone, not just with himself, “In wanting to silence any song” (line 8). He seems to concede that the point of song is to bring joy and pleasure to whoever might be listening to it, regardless of whether the song is solicited by the listener or not.

Commentary

1. The title of the poem seems to carry a clue to as to how we are to take it in terms of its meaning. The word “minor” connotes not only inferiority and comparative unimportance, but it is also the name of a musical key that is typically sad and lamenting in sound.

The mission statement is “To fight poverty with passion and professionalism for lasting results.” Owned by a Washington-based Board of Directors, the World Bank’s purposes haven’t changed but its surveillance, financial and technical assistance operations, have developed to meet the changing requirements of its members in the wider spectrum of the global economy. A Board of Governors represent 184 member countries views and interests. The institutions that comprise the World Bank Group are International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), International Development Association (IDA), International finance corporation (IFC), Multilateral investment guarantee agency (MIGA) and International center for settlement of investment disputes (ICSID). They are loosely affiliated and vary in numbers. IBRD has 184 members, IDA has 16, the IFC has 175, MIGA has 158 and ICSID has 14.

Similar to the World Bank is the International Monetary Fund. There aim is solve economic quandaries whist promoting their own monetarist values. The bank provides the opportunity to correct inconsistencies or debts in a countries’ balance of payments without hindering national or international prosperity. Other aims include the promotion and maintenance of high-level employment to facilitate the expansion growth of international trade and the elimination of foreign exchange restrictions which can arguably hamper the growth of world trade. The IMF however hasn’t been entirely successful or benevolent. George Shultz, a secretary of state under President Ronald Reagan said, “The IMF is ineffective, unnecessary, and obsolete.”

The World Bank and the IMF are the worlds largest public lenders. Whilst the Bank manages a total of $00 billion, the Fund supplies member governments with money to overcome short-term credit difficulties. The Bank and the Fund are also openly and commonly referred to as the worlds biggest ‘loan sharks.’ When the Bank and the Fund lend money to debtor countries, the money comes with a flipside. These strings come in the form of policies called structural adjustment policies. These policies require debtor governments to open their economies to penetration by foreign corporations, with direct effect to the countrys workers and environment.

When providing financial support to a member country, the IMF makes sure that the member is pursuing policies that will balance payment problems. The commitment that members make to implement such economic restoration in return for the IMFs support is known as conditionality. This commitment ensures that members are able to repay the IMF in a timely manner allowing the IMFs limited funds to be available to other members as well. There are two levels of financial support or conditionality that the IMF gives. Low conditionality involves a country establishing that it has a need to balance payments and a declaration that it is taking measures to correct the problem. High conditionality involves designing a specific set of measures to restore a countrys balance problem, a fund agreement that the program will be adequate for that purpose, and the countrys commitment to implement the program.

Write my Essay on Why are the activities of the World Bank and the IMF so controversial?

A Heritage Foundation study looked at IMF loans between 165 and 15. It was found that 54% of the nations getting help were no better off than they were before the loan. Perhaps a reason for this is that like the World Bank, the IMF does not do enough to enforce its conditions. If a country violates its agreement with the IMF the fund may suspend the loan, only to later go back on its word and negotiate a new agreement. The loan will be re-negotiated, and the process will start again. The seventeen different arrangements the IMF had with Peru between 171 and 177, as well as eight separate standby programs for Brazil between 165 best exemplify this.

As a condition for a loan the IMF will, for instance, demand that a nation reduces its current account deficit so the borrower restricts imports. Insistence that a country cut its budget deficit may cause the government to raise taxes, slowing growth. Even setting some useful conditions may have little impact if other internal and external policies still cause problems for the borrowing country. There are obviously cases in which the IMF has pushed for reform and been successful but this essay primarily concerned with weakness. As a synthesis to the IMF’s conditioning for structural adjustment programs and Sap’s in general is that they have been inconsistent. There is much secrecy surrounding the IMF making it extremely difficult to prepare quantitative analysis of IMF policies. This is due to the fact that the organization refuses to release audits of its. What can be known is that the poorest countries of the world owe more money to these two institutions than they do any other private or government institutions because most of these loans were so poorly designed that the borrowing countries have not reaped enough income to pay them back.

Todays emphasis on structural and institutional reforms has not always been part of IMF programs. In 144, delegates from 44 nations set up an international monetary system to promote trade. Each nation set a value for its currency relative to the dollar. The U.S., in turn, fixed the value of the dollar by agreeing to sell gold to other nations at $5 an ounce. The International Monetary Fund was set up to give temporary financing when countries had balance of payments problems as a result of their currencies breaking away from their fixed values. Although that system succeeded temporarily, differences in inflation between countries forced many to alter their currency values. In 171, President Nixon brought this system to an end by refusing to sell gold to other nations. The fixed-rate system collapsed completely. Instead of burning out, IMF simply switched its mission to acting as a medic to developing countries in crisis.

It has been discussed how the World Bank and the IMF’s methods have been open to scepticism. To further show the controversy surrounding the organizations, it is important to discuss how they also undermine human rights and domesticity. Economic policies such as Structural Adjustment Programs imposed by the World Bank and IMF have forced countries to cut education subsidies. The World Bank is the single largest source of money for education programs for less economically developed countries. In the 10s the Bank significantly boosted loans for education, spending an average of $1. billion for the period 11-1. It was found however that increased funding was not always matched by better results. In 15 the World Bank discovered that the failure rate for its education loans was rising also, increasing from 11.8% of the portfolio in 1 to 17.5% in 14. In addition there was a 5 percent increase in the number of projects whose implementation progress has been rated as unsatisfactory from 1.4% in 1 to 15.5%.

The World Bank and the IMF have also forced countries to cut down on teachers. In Kenya the IMF told the government that it would support a promised loan if the government gave into demands from striking teachers to raise salaries from the average basic salary of $150 per month despite the teacher strikes being supported by 70% of the population. In addition the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, have played a major role in creating health problems in less economically developed countries through the economic policies that are implemented through Structural Adjustment Programs. For example in Zimbabwe since the structural Adjustment Programs were introduced, a person would get one third less spent on health care for them. In the Philippines, due to an IMF program, health care budgets for malaria and tuberculosis have fallen by 7% and 6% respectively while immunization programs have fallen by 6%. Altogether sub-Saharan Africa spends four times as much on debt repayment as she does on healthcare.

These two institutions have forced cuts in health care, education and other social services. Mexico is a great example. Mexico has followed most economic policies from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. However since Mexico first adopted the IMF prescriptions of trade, wages have fallen, poverty and inequality have increased, as has the country’s debt. The results of becoming allies with the IMF has for less economically developed countries seen a rise in focus of resources on growing crops for export rather than raising farms and growing food for local communities. These impositions have particularly lead to deeper inequality in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

Following the revolution in Argentina on December 0 001. One of the first acts of interim president Adolfo Rodriguez Saa was to suspend payments on Argentinas $1 billion foreign debt. It was this debt and the decade-long austerity program imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that destroyed Argentinas economy. Since taking office, de la Ruas (the previous president) government had ruthlessly privatized essential services, slashed the salaries and pensions of government workers and raised taxes, finally driving fully 0% of the population below the poverty line.

One thing is for certain. Wherever there is such unfair political or economic pragmatism, there will always be an opposition. There are currently anti debt groups such as Jubilee, 50 years is enough and the World Bank Bonds Boycott that are building moral, political, and financial pressure on the World Bank. The intelligentsia of society have provided valuable critiques by publishing newspapers, magazines and academic journals. Anti-Debt groups have also been successful in organizing public demonstrations but they are not often reported on in the mainstream press for fear of higher awareness and an eventual backlash.

There have been a number of proposals from a wide range of civil society groups, scholars and member countries themselves for reforming the World Bank. Let us reductionally examine some ideals of a proposed system. At present the existing IMF is open to anyone who may qualify for bailouts and political aid to word it casually. A proposed IMF may wish upon bona fide liquidity assistance. The structures of loans given are at present unclear and varied. One should consider making them collateralized and short term. At present conditionality is negotiated. In future it would be more productive to see none except a standard membership into the IMF. Finally lets consider the IMF’s intersection with the World Bank being joint effort being turned into a clear alliance to assist in liberalisation.

Paul Krugman wrote in a Laboratory Columns Archive in May 18 that in effect we have moved from national to global financial markets without creating a corresponding global version of national regulation. Ideally if there were no constraints one needs to recreate at a global level the safeguards that used to work at a national level.

Lawerence J.Mcquillon recommended in his essay ‘Reflections on the Monetary Fund” that it was time to look to market-based alternatives that could prevent future global financial disaster. His principles include floating exchange rates to prevent a foreign-currency crisis. The introduction of Internationally accepted accounting practices and unfettered financial markets to coordinate global capital flows. Finally sound institutional reforms would promote investor confidence and self-sustaining economic growth.

The picture illustrates poverty. It shows small houses in very bad state. Those houses have not the conditions for people to live. In front of the houses, there is a lake. This lake looks very contaminated because it has many residues in it. At the same time and despite the picture’s color is black and white it is noticeable that the lake has a black color, giving it a worse appearance. Also, there are children in the polluted lake taking the garbage that is in it. Those children and other people live in that environment. This picture makes me feel sad, lucky and also reminds me my country of born.

The first feeling that I have when I look at the picture is sadness. It is very depressing when you see and imaging people living in those conditions. Those people live in houses that one day not too far are going to fall down because of their status. Also, they might be uncomfortable living in houses that are not, for sure, very hygienic. The fact that those people live in an inappropriate environment, make them also have bad modals and behavior. Moreover, we I look at those children taking objects that had been used and thrown by other people make me think about the necessity they have. They might be seeking in that lake for food or something that would entertain them. In addition, when I see that lake, I also think about how sick those people might be because the contaminated water of that lake brings many insects that are also infected with some virus or illness. Finally, the conditions and the environment in what those people live make me feel depress because these are the reasons why poor people end up dying.

Second, when I see that picture that illustrates poverty, I also consider myself as a lucky person. When I refer myself as lucky person, it is because thanks God I don’t live in those circumstances that those people in the picture live, and also because I have never felt the necessity of something to live in a good environment. My parents have been making a big effort for me to have and appropriate kind of life and also a good education. I have always lived in a clean place where everything is proper for a good hygiene. This has made me be free of any dangerous illness. Moreover, I have never felt the lack of food to go to a dirty and polluted lake and take the food that has been eaten by other people. I can say that I am a lucky person not because I have had all that I have wanted and needed but because I have always had a better life than those people in the picture; noticing that I am not discriminating them.

The last thing that the picture remains me is about my country of born. When I see that picture, it is like I see the places where poor people live in my country. In my country the majority of the population is poor people that is why, it is very common see places like that in my country. The poor people from my country also live in places near to a contaminated lake. Moreover, all these places have houses that are in the same state than the houses in the picture are. Therefore, the people from my country who live in those inappropriate houses have the same habit of taking trash than those people in the picture. The picture also remains me that in my country the government doesn’t do anything to stop this problem of poverty. The government is aware of the situation in which most of the people in my country live, but they prefer to focus in other problems, sometimes too insignificant, than to help those poor people have a better kind of life. The picture remains me the actual state in what people from my country live.

When I first looked at the picture many things came up to my mind, but just three of them really moved me. First, how depressing the conditions in which those people live are. Second, when it comes to kind of life, how lucky I feel when I compare myself with them. Last but not least, the thoughts of the people and the actual condition of my country that the picture brings to my mind.

To begin with, my sister is a very admirable person, and she proves it day by day. First of all, my sister is one of the best students in her class. For example, she is always bringing home pure A’s, and she studies almost all day long. Also, her expressions when she speaks are very intellectual phrases, proving her intelligence. To illustrate, when she talks in class, usually her friends will stay looking at her as if she were some kind of person with more brain than everybody else in that room. Moreover, she is a very independent person. She doesn’t need to be helped by anybody because she is always capable to do anything she wants by herself. When she does her homework, she doesn’t ask for help even if she would need it, she would spend time on it trying hard to do it by her own.

Furthermore, my sister is always considered as a beautiful teenager. Her face looks like a baby face, not only because of the skin, but also because of the expressions. As an illustration, her eyes will always make you remember childhood. Also, she is always concerned about the way she looks, and she tries as much as possible to look nice and wear the appropriate clothes and makeup. Furthermore, she always goes to the fitness center to keep in shape and workout as much as she needs. For example, the last month she was going three times a week for about an hour because she gained a few pounds, but now that she lost them she is going twice a week. For my sister, it is always important the way she looks because, as she says, “one’s appearance is the reflection of one’s personality”.

Also, her personality is what I mostly like about her, and that is what makes her special. My sister is a very sympathetic person, and this is remarkable in every single party that she attends. To illustrate, at a party that she went to last year, everybody was so impressed about her, so they kept talking about her for one week after the party. In addition, she is a very helpful person, and she is always trying to find out what you need or what she can do to make you feel better. Finally, when you have a deep conversation with her, you can notice how comprehensive she is with everybody. To illustrate, she will always listen to you, she will have good advice when you really need it, and, of course, she will be there when you really need her.

To conclude, I will always admire my sister for who she is and what she does. First of all, her intelligence is remarkable everywhere she goes, and whoever listens to her will be surprised. Also, her beauty attracts not only the handsome guys, but also the gentlemen who seek a remarkable person at their side. Finally, her personality is the most amazing part, showing how she cares for everybody, doing everything with the best intention, and always helping everyone.

Many of Earth’s organisms and processes depend on each other to survive the natural world. First of all,

freedom, or forced to be free, and equality presuppose each other in some instances, but sometimes they

are interdependent. For example, if you look into the lower class, people within that class are equal among

others in that class. Also, they have freedom inside the boundaries of their status quo. As the view

broadens to the whole society, that certain class loses some of its freedom and equality to the aristocracy.

In this example, the amount of freedom and equality you receive all depends on money and power. Wealth

corrupts the balance of freedom and equality between the social classes in the nation. In all, everyone in a

legitimate society has some equality and freedom, however, the how much you get relies on where you

stand in the social triangle.

In every valid government, every citizen has freedom of their basic rights, but the sense of equality will

never be distributed equally between them. This problem is constantly going to true because of the

definition of general will an individual has to alienate some of his natural rights to join the body politic.

Therefore, power is distributed to the government, and the people of the nation are not equal. One person

will always have power over another. If everyone was equal, chaos would break out into the world,

because when nobody governs or rules the citizens, they can do whatever they please. Freedom is preferred

in the society rather than equality. A person with freedom would have most rights in the Constitution, but a

person with equality would live in a chaotic society, because there is no governing house. Altogether, the

presence of freedom and equality together differs with the scope of the condition.

America’s concepts of freedom and equality have varied over the course of its history. When the American

government was new, only white male property owners had total use of the Constitution’s given rights.

Early America also exercised the idea of slavery, where the master and slave relationship exist. But as an

intolerance against slavery grew, the masters were forced by the Union to change their illegitimate system

to a more legitimate system. This newly built system resulted in all males, property owner or not, having

privileges to all rights in the Bill of Rights and the American Constitution. But this method still leaves out

a single group of people, women, from the concept of freedom. Also in America, the separate but equal

issue rose to the surface of controversy over the topic of freedom. All these examples demonstrate where

freedom is non-existent to all people in the nation. They also display the same idea of freedom within the

private will, but that freedo!

m is surrendered to the general will to support a legitimate government. In some cases in the American

history, some citizens abandon more rights than others. But as the view travels closer to the present, the

difference of the people’s rights between each other gradually diminishes to a negligible amount. This

perception of America’s freedom shows an increase of knowledge towards a near-perfect republic.

Today, government partially employs the use of total equality. But again, a legitimate government cannot

have total equality because of the alienation of certain rights to join the body politic. American

government follows the outline of a legitimate government. The checks and balances system balances the

amount of power among the three governing houses. Also, the government does not employ a parallel

existence of freedom and equality. But that existence is impossible in any legitimate society, according to

the description of the body politic and the general will. The individual mind has matured a long way

toward this form of structured government, but the basic concept of the government is the natural laws of a

human being. Although, man has evolved into a being of great reason, distant from the state of nature, he

must look into nature to find a correct and sanctioned regulations and theories.

Indian cities are prosperous and stretch far and wide. There are many guest houses for travelers. There are hospitals providing free medical service for the poor. The viharas and temples are majestic. People are free to choose their occupations. There are no restrictions on the movement of the people. Government officials and soldiers are paid their salaries regularly. People are not addicted to drinks. They shun violence. The administration provided by the Gupta rulers is fair and just. (John Marshall,16)

Archaeological excavations have brought to light the remains of a highly developed urban civilization in ancient India that stretched across approximately 150 kilometers, extending from the area on the upper Sutlaj in contemporary Punjab to Lothal in Gujarat. Historians are of the view that this civilization flourished in the third millennium before the birth of Christ.

It is known by the name of the two of its great cities Harappa and Mohenjodaro situated on the left and the right bank respectively of the river Ravi in Punjab. The two cities were built on a similar plan houses constructed with standard burnt bricks arranged in squares, along roads intersecting at right angles. The houses varied in size but were all based on the same plan a small courtyard surrounded by rooms with entrances in side alleys, often multistoried with no windows opening out to the street. The houses had bathrooms and the drains flowing out were connected to covered sewers with soak-pits. This unique sewage system is amongst the most impressive achievements of the Indus people and sets them apart from all other ancient civilizations.

“The earliest literary source that sheds light on Indias past is the Rig Veda. It is difficult to date this work with any accuracy on the basis of tradition and ambiguous astronomical information contained in the hymns. It is most likely that Rig Veda was composed between 1,500 B.C. and 1,000 B.C.” (H.D.Sankalia, 174)

The most famous of the Mauryas is Ashoka the Great (reign 7 - B.C.). He extended the boundaries of his empire considerably stretching from Kashmir and Peshawar in the North and Northwest to Mysore in the South and Orissa in the East but his fame rests not so much on military conquests as on his celebrated renunciation of war. After witnessing the carnage at the battle field of Kalinga (6 B.C.) in Orissa, Ashoka resolved to dedicate himself to Dhamma or righteousness.

It was Chandra Gupta II (reign 80 - 41 A.D.) Samudra Guptas successor who finally defeated the Sakas and re-established a strong central authority. His reign registered the high watermark in Indian culture. His accomplishments in war and peace were glorious enough for him to claim the title Vikramaditya the resplendent, great, and good king of legends. Fa-hien, a Chinese traveler who was in India from to 414 A.D. has left an interesting account of contemporary India. This age of peace and prosperity witnessed an unprecedented flowering of art, literature and the sciences.

The number of Dravidisms in all aspects of the language including phonology increased in the post-Rigvedic era.

The large majority appear first in the classical language, but in its early stage, being first recorded in Panini, Patanjali, Mahabharata, Srautasutra, etc. The majority appear also in Pali, which is important for dating since these canonical texts take us back to a period from 500-00 B.C.

Indian is an ancient civilization and an inheritor to a rich and diverse cultural tradition. The Fairs and Festivals celebrated across the length and breadth of the land present a fascinating pageant and showcase the resplendence of its arts and crafts tradition. Some festivals are of religious nature, others are linked with the lives of the people, change of seasons and harvesting. There are fairs which in past played an important role in the commercial life of the people and continue to be celebrated with great gusto.

Education in ancient India was systematic. Kids were taught by a guru (a teacher). Even chief’s sons had to obey the guru. All students followed a rigorous course of studies which were imparted orally. Writing was done on bark and leaves, and hence was perishable, so we have very few rock edicts to tell us what they studied or what they wrote.

This ancient civilization must have had marvelous craftsmen, skilled in pottery, weaving, and metal working. The pottery that has been found is of very high quality, with unusually beautiful designs. Several small figures of animals, such as monkeys, have been found. These small figures could be objects of art or toys. There are also small statues of what they think are female gods. So far, scientists have found no large statues. They have found bowls made of bronze and silver, and many beads and ornaments. The metals used to make these things are not found in the Indus Valley. So, either the people who lived in this ancient civilization had to import all of these items from some other place, or more probably, had to import the metals they used to make these beautiful things from somewhere else.
