In The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D Salinger, Holden Caulfield is introduced as a troubled New Yorker in desperate need of guidance. He doesn’t care about life or school, and has to find a way to change. The only problem is, Holden doesn’t want to or even think he needs to. Instead, he chooses to make poor choices that keep getting him kicked out of schools. Holden really could have changed easily. All he needed to do was make a simple decision. But he chose not to. So Holden ends up in a Mental Hospital, overwhelmed with his troubles. Yet he wasn’t on his own during his times of struggle. People tried to help Holden, but this just made things worse for him. J.D Salinger shows how three characters fail to become positive mentors, pushing Holden further into emotional trauma.

Mr. Spencer is one character who fails to become a positive mentor to Holden. If Mr. Spencer was a true positive mentor, he would have given him guidance and advice on what Holden should do. Instead all he does is tell Holden that his lack of care is stupid and continually nags about his schoolwork. But first of all, Mr. Spencer’s appearance really bothers Holden. He becomes very uncomfortable because of the way Mr. Spencer looks. “The minute I went in, I was sort of sorry I’d come.” (pg.7) Mr. Spencer’s attempt to become a positive mentor had already begun to fail as soon as Holden walked into his room. It’s tough to give someone advice when that person doesn’t want to be there in the first place. But Holden listens to Mr. Spencer anyway just to be polite. Yet he ends up getting a lecture he doesn’t expect. Mr. Spencer gets very angry and scolds Holden when he finds out that he was kicked out of Pencey. If Mr. Spencer wanted to be a good mentor, he would have tried to give him some words of encouragement instead of putting him down. What Mr. Spencer said to Holden just made him more upset and angry. Mr. Spencer brings up talk about the poor job Holden did on the schoolwork he would turn in. This really agitates Holden, and towards the end of their talk, Holden really wants to leave. But when he starts leaving he takes a good look at Mr. Spencer and actually starts feeling really sorry for him. There is no possible way Holden could look up to Mr. Spencer and see him as a mentor when he feels sorry for him.

Mr. Antolini is another character who tries to become a mentor for Holden, but instead fails miserably. At first it seems as though Mr. Antolini is really going to be able to help Holden out. He talks with him for awhile about his problems, and Holden actually listens. He isn’t annoyed by what Mr. Antolini says like he was with Mr. Spencer. Then Mr. Antolini even gives him a place sleep for the night. But all of these good things are immediately ruined when something happens that Holden wasn’t expecting. Holden wakes up in the middle of the night and realizes that Mr. Antolini is petting his head. Confused and frightened, Holden immediately wants to leave. He thinks Mr. Antolini is coming on to him, but doesn’t say anything about that to him. Instead, he says he has to go right away for some urgent reason. It was at that point that Mr. Antolini had failed to be a helpful mentor when he was so close to doing so. He tries, but fails to convince Holden to stay. Mr. Antolini couldn’t find a way to explain why he was petting him. Holden wasn’t listening to him anyway. He just got out of his house as fast as he could. But after Holden leaves the house, he starts to feel that maybe he reacted wrongly to what Mr. Antolini. Holden begins to think that Mr. Antolini could have just been petting his head for no wrong reason at all. He regrets the way he immediately judged Mr. Antolini, and all of this just makes Holden more depressed and angry.

Thought D.B really isn’t aware of it, he is also a potential father figure to Holden who ended up failing. D.B is Holden’s older brother, and since Holden’s father is never really there for him, it’s only natural that Holden would turn to D.B for guidance. But D.B changes, as does Holden’s opinion about him. D. B. wrote a volume of short stories that Holden admires very much. Holden’s favorite is “The Secret Goldfish.” It is about a child who buys a goldfish and does not allow anyone to look at it, because he has paid for it with his own money. This foreshadows Holdens consistent passion for the innocence and authenticity of childhood. This is the center of Holden’s problems, and D.B indirectly emphasizes this idea to him through his book. Also, Holden finds it hard to take D.B seriously, when his definition of a phony directly applies to his older brother. D.B is a movie writer in Hollywood. Holden hates movies more than anything. He thinks people in show business are the phoniest people out there. So when D.B moves to Hollywood to be a writer, Holden loses a little respect for him. Also, he was the only older family member that really had a chance to be any sort of mentor to Holden, yet he ended up moving away. That was tough for Holden. But what was toughest for Holden to accept was D.B’s new profession as a prostitute. Holden could handle the phoniness of his brother. He didn’t like it, but D.B was writing and that’s what he was good at. So Holden accepted that. But he could never see D.B the same way now that he was a prostitute. After that, there was no chance Holden would ever look up to D.B. Instead, he actually looked down on him because of the job had chosen. This really had a negative effect on Holden. D.B was his only brother left after Allie had died, and seeing him turn into something awful must have had added to his distress.

Order Custom Essay on Failing Mentors

All Holden needed in order to straighten out his life was guidance from some sort of mentor. It wouldn’t have even needed to be a lot of guidance, just enough good advice to set him in the right direction. Unfortunately, only three people in his life tried to do so; Mr. Spencer, Mr. Antolini, and his older brother D.B, whom all failed to become the mentor Holden needed. Mr. Spencer only nagged Holden about his schoolwork, Mr. Antolini started coming on to him, and D.B became a prostitute in New York. Out of all three characters, Mr. Antolini comes closest to reaching Holden. He manages to avoid phoniness, and doesn’t speak to Holden as a teacher or authority figure. Yet, unexpectedly he comes up short. He ends up pushing Holden further into his worries, just like the other two did. But was that their fault or Holden’s own? They were just trying to help Holden out, so you can’t really blame them. And Holden wouldn’t have been in that position if his father had shown the right amount of care for him. So how can Holden be held responsible for his actions? If you don’t have a father to provide any guidance in your life, you won’t end up knowing how to accept it from others.

The world of Fashion is a vast arena and encompasses every sphere of your

life and your activities. Fashion today has taken a front seat and is of

topmost priority to every individual from every age group. The word

fashion in itself covers a wide arena from clothing to your mode of

education, to your way of communication everything today holds a prefix to

it in the form of out of or in fashion. Though the impact is more on

the youngsters that is from the teenagers to the working professionals its

not that the others are left out.

All that we do today has got to be fashionable and the latest to the list

is whether you are tech savvy, the way you communicate, the way you present

yourself everything ought to be fashionable today. Though fashion

predominantly in the past was related to the designerwear - clothing,

footwear, accessories and others the scope of the word has increased

gradually and now it covers everything that you can name of. From the kind

of furniture, the kind of cellphone, the kind of clothing, the kind of

jewellery, the format of your letter writing, the language you use on the

email, the kind of cars, the way you wear make-up, the shades you use for

your clothes and your make-up to the way you place your furnitures in your

house everything now evolves around fashion. All the above mentioned things

have their own fashions and some of them have their own reputed,

international brands also like the Versace, Calvin & Klein, the Woodlands,

Nike, Aarmani, Durian and such like many more the list goes on and on.

Youngsters today are more prone in imitating their role models and in most

case it is the silver screen heroes and heroines when it comes to fashion

related to your dresses and other trendsetting activities like some punch

line or any other such activities. When it is how you set up your house or

how you design your furnitures people generally follow the trend set by

some interior decorators. It is a natural habit of almost everybody today

to follow a set pattern which most of the time is very new and contemporary

and is laid out by a certain individual or a group of people and call it

the in-thing which in other words mean that this is in fashion. The

term fashion has become so very predominant these days that which

restaurants or which fast food centers you eat in also is termed as

fashionable and out of fashion now. Like eating in Mc Donalds is

fashionable but eating in an equally good road side ordinary restaurant is

out of fashion. However, sometimes it is also the other way round where

people eat in the roadside restaurants just because thats in fashion not

even giving a thought to the important factors of the quality of food and

service that the two different places will have, though this in itself is a

debatable topic.

Youngsters today get into the habit of smoking and boozing because they

with their very little and immature thinking ability feel that this is in

fashion and for them whatever is in fashion must be followed by all and

sundry. Many teenagers in India today watch only English movies and listen

to English music as that is in fashion. They are more knowledgeable in the

English culture than their own motherlands culture which by the whole

world is considered as one of the richest and valuable cultural society. We

do not want to mention that knowing the English culture is a negative

aspect but knowing your own culture is equally important, but fortunately

or unfortunately that is not in fashion.

The fact to be accepted here is that following fashion trends which ever

way it might be does certainly prove beneficial at times but sometimes it

is also the other way round. But, it is also left to us whether we take up

the positives or the negatives from what is in fashion today. In doing so

todays guardians and the people who are involved in grooming todays

youngsters to become responsible Indian citizens of tomorrow play a major

role and the onus is on them to guide the youngsters properly to choose the

right path. Last but not the least the colourful world of fashion is so

amazing that it ultimately takes everybody in its span including the elders

and the oldies also who get overwhelmed by the trend setting fashionable

ways and items and join the band of these fashion oriented youngsters.

Among all the differences that exist between the different countries and

provinces, Fashion trends is possibly the only mantra the whole world

chants in unison today.

HEROES, IMAGINATION OR EXISTENCE?

Heroes are a product of a society’s perception of someone to be praised and

adored. The definition of a hero is dependent on that society’s beliefs, laws and taboos.

There are heroes for all ages, and for both men and women. Heroes have had changing

Write your heroes research paper

roles since man wrote his story, and all have been the embodiment of each society, each

civilization’s ideals. The 10s child sick with visions of hoop dreams, is largely affected

by basketball superstar, Michael Jordan. He inspires the young depraved ghetto child to

rise up against his unfortunate circumstances. Nevertheless their many noteworthy

qualities, all heroes possess faults because they are human and all humans possess failings,

because heroes begin to fold and make mistakes as they are suddenly thrust into the awe

inspired limelight, and because their pedestals are broken and disgarded as the public

craves to see the dirt underneath the man.

Failings in heroes are only natural, they are human and all humans possess faults.

All human beings are born and die with character traits, which can be, at the most basic

level, perceived as being helpful or as being harmful, depending on the character’s

viewpoint. People are regularly regarded as having traits ranging from the most trivial as

being a perfectionist, to the most weighty, such as being a coward. These traits form the

basis of human personality and define the individual’s personal nature. Montreal teen

gangs beat, rape and steal all the while embracing courage, bravery and wisdom as they

remarkably shun cowardice and stupidity. Ideal heroes are perceived differently in

different periods of history. In Chaucer’s Prologue of the Canterbury Tales a worthy man

is described. He is a chivalrous knight who prided himself on his own personal truth,

honor, freedom, and courtesy. Chaucer’s view of a hero is one who is without fault, truly

the epitome of goodness.

Heroes are under severe stress and live a life of duress and begin to commit errors

as the level of pressure begins to catapult. Heroes are continuously placed under pressure

by all who surround them, convinced that the object of their attention can not fail under

any circumstances. They grow self-centered and absolute followers of themselves and

except the same undeserved treatment from others. As Beowulf often takes pride in his

work, proclaiming that he slew Grendel, that he rescued the damsel in distress, without the

help needed, or offered from any persons. It is this need to see their idols, their heroes

unmasked that leaves the public to destroy their own heroes.

Public figures, heroes and idols are living a life of bitter pain as the masses greedily

pleasure their body and mind while tearing them down off their rightful pedestals. All

heroes and idols from across the globe have to contend with it, from the Dali Lama to

Pricess Di. In Chaucer’s world, with the post of clergyman comes the unimaginable

pressure to do good deeds and to never become corrupted. This is quite difficult as best

as Chaucer describes the corruption of the priesthood. It was wrong then and it is wrong

now. It is extremely comparable to our present-day corruption in the state as power

hungry materialistic politicians perform deals under the table for their own selfish

individual goals.

Heroes become more and more the personal perception of an individual. In

Chaucer’s Prologue, the knight is the common definition of a hero, but he is not the only

one. Every individual in our known world has a different definition of a hero, and it is

only through that personal realization that a true personal hero may emerge. Young

children mature in a world where they are placed in front of the idiot box and begin to

view the world from a perverted and very different perspective to the generation before

them, rendering them to view people with perverted ideals. They have different methods

of reasoning that lead to the changing roles of heroes within the human race. The masses,

the majority, are perversions of individual flaws and exponentially multiply the hateful,

perverted sentiments that all humanity possesses in varying degrees. Heroes and idols are

thrown on the marble floor, smashed and broken like pieces of a jade buddah.

Throughout time, much has been discussed about the roles in which women and men have played. Men have always been seen as leaders and have held down positions of power throughout history, but there is also a saying “behind every man is a greater woman”. Although women had been restricted in gaining roles in which decisions were to be made, they had been able to use the influence of feminine charms and gentle persuasion. Through gently guiding their men folk into believing that the idea or the thought was there own. Men have been bought up with the notion to protect, whilst women had been bought up with the notion to nurture. John Steinbeck’s two narrative texts, Cannery Row and “The Chrysanthemums” both convey the values and attitudes of the 10’s, which are revealed through class and gender. Through the use of class representation, Steinbeck has managed to comment on poverty, different levels of class in society and also how people are judged on their material possessions and on the amount of money they earn. Through the use of gender Steinbeck has commented on the stereotypes of gender, genders place in society and how certain genders try to overcome their stereotype. These values and attitudes are conveyed through the establishment of the characters in both texts.

In the novel Cannery Row, John Steinbeck develops the structure within the society and demonstrates and creates characters that do whatever it takes to survive in life. Where as in the short story “The Chrysanthemum-s”, he writes about how life evolves. These meanings are produced through the use of Darwin’s Theory.

“A man looking at reality brings his own limitations to the world, if he has strength and energy of mind the tide pool stretches both ways, digs back to electrons and leaps space into universe and fights out of the moment of non-conceptual time. Then ecology has a synonym which is ALL”

Custom writing service can write essays on Cannery Row and “The Chrysanthemums”

Steinbeck relates life culture, values and class of Cannery Road to the structures of the tidal pools. The story is set in the after hours, when the Cannery has closed, when the workers have left and only the inhabitants of the street are left. As within the tidal pool, when the tide recedes and the ocean draws back, the tidal pools are still full of life, the remnants left behind. The different life structures of the tidal pool directly relate with the social structure of Cannery Row. The lowest status at the bottom of the pool (the mussels and limpets), above the starfish who feed on them, the eels who hide in crevices, only coming out to feed. Hermit crabs scampering on the bottom, always on the lookout for an empty shell, which might be bigger and better than the one, they have. All to be silenced when the tide comes back in, but to start all over again when it recedes and the ocean draws back.

When the Cannery has closed the story revolves around the people left behind. Mack and the boys are at the bottom end of the social structure, the scavengers, who feed on everyone else. They don’t work unless they have to, who would rather steal or exchange favours than to put themselves out of pocket. Then there is Mr and Mrs Malloy who are the hermit crabs, looking for something bigger and better but having to make do with the pipe. Although they make it their home, they are always trying to improve upon it, hoping to make it more acceptable. Dora and the girls are higher in the social structure, only because they are able to earn money and have somewhere safe and warm to live. They would not be able to climb any higher in their status not only due to the fact that they are women but because of their profession. Lee Chong and his family are well respected because they are business owners and they supply the street with all their needs and wants. Unfortunately their status would not change because they are immigrants and during the period time of the book, immigrants were not highly rated. Doc is at the top of the social structure. He is an educated man. Everyone looks up to Doc because he is what they all strive to be. He has his own home, a job and because he is a scholar, he is well respected.

As with the story Cannery Row, Darwin’s theory also relates to “The Chrysanthemums” but in a different way. Where as Cannery Row uses the tidal pool, The short story “The Chrysanthemums” uses the reproduction and growth of the plants and flowers to portray the hardships and pitfalls of life.

“She took off a glove and put her strong fingers down into the forest of new green chrysanthemums sprouts that were growing round the old roots. She spread the leaves and looked down among the close-growing stems. No aphids were there, no sow bugs nor snails nor cutworms. Her terrier fingers destroy such pests before they could get started.”

The plants start off as small stalks with a few buds. Through careful planting, making sure they are in the right soil, water and sunshine they begin to grow and bloom. There are dangers from pests such as snails and aphids, from frosts and droughts but with careful nurturing they grow into strong healthy plants. Plant them in the wrong soil and it may prevent growth, forget to nurture and they may not bloom. Elisa is on the farm and although she is happy enough, her growth is stunted and she has forgotten to bloom. When the pedlar arrived he showed an interest in her and treated her as an intelligent person. He saw she loved her chrysanthemums and by showing an interest, Elisa began to bloom. While he paid her compliments and listened to her, her eyes began to sparkle, her movements became more confidant and she became “alive”. Through his nurturing, she began to grow. But as with the pitfalls of the chrysanthemums (the bugs and the elements), when Elisa saw the remains of her chrysanthemums on the road, her confidence began to wane, the sparkle began to lessen and she reverted back to her old self. The story portrayed that with the right conditions life can grow and expand but you must be prepared for pitfalls.

In the 10’s, women were to be seen but not heard. Their place was in the home was to raise babies, provide dinner for the man of the house and to nurture her family. A mans place was to be seen as the money earner, providing for his family. Women were stereotyped as “weak” and men were stereotyped as “strong”. In the short story “The Chrysanthemums” Steinbeck follows these stereotypes to construct his main characters Elisa and Henry.

“A light wind blew up from the SouthWest so that the farmers were mildly hopeful of a good rain before long but fog and rain do not go together”.

Elisa’s character at the beginning of the short story was portrayed as a farmers-wife who knew her place in society and in the marriage. As the story progressed Elisa was portrayed with more confidence, and became stronger within herself and it became more evident through her actions and dialogue. This quote is a metaphor, which focuses on strength and the female gender. The strength being Elisa’s new found hope in herself and the female stereotype gender of “weak”. When relating this to a woman in the 10’s, although it was not uncommon for women to be strong, it was just unusual for it to become public, Elisa allowed her new found confidence to be witnessed by her husband.

In the early 10’s just as society had started accepting women in the workplace, The Great depression settled in and many jobs were lost. Men found it hard to find work, so from 1-17 federal legislation prohibited more than one member from the same family working in the civil service. Once again reverting back to the old society rules, women were left back at home, in the weak nurturing position whilst the male once again became the money earner.

Dora, from Cannery Row was not cast as your typical stereotype woman of the 10’s. She was a woman who owned her own business which in a social standing, made her more acceptable.

“…Through the exercise of special gifts of tact and honesty, charity and a certain realism, made herself respected by the intelligent, the learned, and the kind. And by the same token she is hated by the twisted and lascivious sisterhood of married spinsters whose husbands respect the home but don’t like it every much”

Even though Dora was a respected member of the society, she was an out cast by moral and churchgoing people because of her position as a madam in a whorehouse. As her “job” was illegal, it put her on the wrong side of the law but she was able to get around this as the law was willing to turn a blind eye as Dora used her money “unsung, unpublicized, shameless dirty wages of sin” to give to charities and paid out double or more money than any other person. When the depression settled in Cannery Row, Dora spent out a lot of money for hungry children, jobless fathers and depressed mothers and paid other families grocery bills for almost two years. This kind giving almost sent Dora bankrupt and out of business. Even after all her giving and generosity, the hard-earned respect was unable to rise her in the social standing’s because of her profession.

Human nature’s first instinct is to survive by whatever means open to them. The survival of the fittest. Mack and the boys, outcasts by all standards, survive by accommodation bartering with Lee Chong, placating the Captain who owned the frog-laden pond.

“dine delicately with the tigers, fondle the frantic heifers, and wrap up the crumbs to feed the sea gulls of Cannery Row”

Dora survives by prostitution. She knows that this is not an acceptable social position but her instincts to survive are strong. Elisa in “The Chrysanthemums” hides her inner feeling and accepts her place in life through sheer survival instincts to come out at the end with the least amount of emotional pain. When she finds the plant discarded in the middle of the road, the pain is quite unbearable to deal with, so she slowly buries her feelings again.

“Her face was turned away from him. ‘It will be enough if we can have wine. It will be plenty.’ She turned up her coat collar so he could not see that she was crying weakly like an old woman.”

Women were born with the reproductive organs and the instincts to nurture. Men were born with the instinct to provide (hunt) and protect. These instincts are imperative in the desire for our species to survive and grow strong. We are members of the animal kingdom and we all strive for the same thing. That our particular species is protected, nurtured and given all possible chance to survive. Men and women also have the instinct to bond together. Without one or the other, the chance of survival for the race is non-existent. Somewhere over the centuries, it was decided that the role of the male gender was more important to the survival of the race. Women were to be portrayed as weak and submissive whilst a man was strong and aggressive.

We still have the same instincts, only we use them to further our careers and acquire possessions. Even in our Modern times, we are assessed and judged by our possessions and the amount of money we earn. - low income earners, middle income earners, high income earners. Have we fine-tuned our instincts too much? What would happen if we had to rely once again on nature? Would the women go back to her basic instincts to reproduce and nurture or would she still fight for equal standing? Would man be strong enough to resume hunting and providing or would he let the dominant women take over and relieve him of that chore? I suppose the biggest question of them all is “What would happen to the human race?” if our basis instincts and survival instincts were to be lost.

It’s a Small World, after All

The world is a happy place where people are sympathetic with one another and united despite their differencesthis message encapsulates one particular understanding of the world in which the normal condition is one of harmony and accord, where people are naturally good and kind.

From this perspective on international politics, cooperation is normal, understanding between people is easy once we get to know one another, and disputes are superficial anomalies that can be resolved amicably. (Ties in with piece on Liberalism in lecture notes)

People can and ultimately must understand and accommodate each other.

Different view of the world conflict between good and evil. This perspective is the exact opposite of the idealistic view in which conflicts are resolvable by peaceful means and all people are naturally sympathetic with one another.

In this view, evil persons create conflicts and seek to defeat the forces of truth, justice, and ‘the American Way’. World politics is fundamentally a struggle between evil states and good states. Tension in the world is created by evil states that seek to gain at the expense of weaker nations.

Wars do not start because of the situation in which states find themselves, but rather because of the aggressive intentions of evil states or leaders.

These two views suggest either that the natural order of humanity is harmonious, or that history is a conflict between the forces of light and those of darkness. These contrasting interpretations are necessitated by the fact that there is no automatic order in the international system. In domestic politics, there are legal norms that are enforceable on individuals. In world politics, however, no one rules over the states.

THE CHANGING ROLE IN VIOLA/CESARIO IN THE TWELFTH NIGHT

In Shakespeares Twelfth Night, it is clearly evident that the

fluctuation in attitude to the dual role and situation and tribulations

imposed upon the character of Viola/Cesario ends up in a better

understanding of both sexes, and thus, allows Viola to have a better

understanding for Orsino. Near the opening of the play, when Viola is

adopting her male identity, she creates another self, like two masks and

may decide to wear one or the other while swinging between the two

identities in emotion and in character. She decides to take on this

identity because she has more freedom in society in her Cesario mask, which

is evident when she is readily accepted by Orsino, whereas, in her female

identity she would not be. Thus, a customary role in society and to the

outlooks of others is portrayed.

Orsino sees Cesario, as a young squire just starting out in the world,

much like himself as a young, spry lad, so he has a tendency to be more

willing to unload onto her with his troubles and sorrows, seeking a

companion with which to share and to teach. Thus, Viola grows in her male

disguise to get a better feeling for his inner self, not the self that he

shows to the public, or would reveal and share with Viola in her true

female self, but rather his secret self, as he believes he shares with a

peer. So, she grows to love him. But, Orsinos motivation is actually not

love for Viola, but rather he seems to be in love with love itself. His

entire world is filled with love but he knows that there might be a turning

point for him, like when he says

If music be the food of love, play on; give me

excess of it, that, surfeiting, the appetite may

sicken, and so die. 1. (I,I,I-III)

This quote shows that he knows that he is so caught up in love, that he

hopes his appetite for love may simmer when he takes more than he can

handle.

1. Shakespeare, William. Twelfth Night. Longmans Canada Limited, Don

Mills, Ontario, 161. All subsequent quotes are from this edition.

Near the end of the play, when all tricks and treacheries are revealed

and all masks are lifted, Orsino falls in love with Viola. He first

forgives her/him of her/his duty to him, the master; then says that she

shall now be her masters mistress

Your master quits you; and for your service

done him, so much against the mettle of your

sex, so far beneath your soft and tender

breeding, and since you calld me master for

so long, here is my hand. You shall from

this time be your masters mistress. (V,I,-7)

This is sort of a switching love as he thought he was in love with Olivia

in the beginning, but, he readily switches his love to Viola, as he feels

he knows her personality well.

As for Viola, she declares her love for Orsino many times, as if by

saying that she would love him if she were a lady. When Orsino first sends

Cesario to act as a messenger and send Orsinos love to Olivia, Cesario

proclaims

Ill do my best to woo your lady; [aside]

yet, a barful strife! Whoeer I woo,

myself would be his wife. (I,IV, 40-4)

This shows that Viola knows what a difficult situation that she is in, and

that she might try to woo her out of loving Orsino, so that she might have

him for herself; except there is a slight, unexpected twist of fate...

After Cesario leaves from Olivias, she declares

What is your parentage? Above my fortunes,

yet my state is well; I am a gentleman. Ill

be sworn thou art. Thy tongue, thy face, thy

limbs, and spirit, do give thee five-fold blazon.

Not too fast soft, soft! Unless the master were

the man. How now! Even so quickly may one catch

the plague? Methinks I feel this youths per-

fections with an invisible and subtle stealth to

creep in at mine eyes. Well, let it be. What

ho, Malvolio! (I,V, 8-8)

Olivia, is thinking back to her question to Cesario, and his response to

it. Then she replies to Cesarios response, to herself, thinking about

him. She agrees with his response, then goes over his many delightful

features, and wonders how she so quickly has caught the plague of love for

young Cesario. She decides that it is her feeling towards his youthful

perfections that creep into her heart and to her eyes. Then she agrees

with her decision, and sends for Malvolio, in hope that he may recall

Cesario, so that she may talk with him again. Olivia feels a strong

passionate love for Cesario, even though it was love at first sight for

her. Cesario presented (himself) very magnificently and left a lasting

impression in Olivias mind.

The next time that Cesario came by, Olivia declared

Cesario, by the roses of the spring, by maid-

hood, honour, truth and everything, I love

thee so, that, maugre all thy pride, nor wit

nor reason can my passion hide. (III,I,145-148)

This verifies that Olivia is profoundly in love with Cesario, despite all

his pride. But, Cesario does not possess the same sentiments for Olivia as

he says

By innocence I swear, and by my youth, I have

one heart, one bosom and one truth, And that

no woman has; nor never none shall mistress

be of it, save I alone. And so adieu, good

madam. (III,I,15-157)

Here, Viola tells Olivia that she could never love her, nor any other woman

because she only has one love (to Orsino) and is loyal. But, Olivia is

still in love, and requests that Cesario return.

Overall, Viola learns that in the role of Cesario she had to be quick

on her feet, and defend the probing questions and statements as to her love

and others love for her. As well she acquired the skill to bide her time,

until the time was right, lest she reveal her true self or intentions.

DEFINITIONS

Simile = (the use of) an expression comparing one thing with another, always including the words `as or `like a figure of speech in which one thing is compared to another.

Oxymorons = two words used together which have, or seem to have, opposite meanings. [P.14]It was fashionable in the love poetry of Shakespeare’s time to put together such contradictory words, these strange oppositions are called oxymorons (ex. ‘loving hate’). Putting together words which seem to contradict one another ex.bitter sweet.

1. A bump as big as a young cockerels stone [p.7, line 54, Nurse’s]

EXPLANATIONS

Oxymorons -

1. Romeo tells Benvolio that he loves a girl (Rosaline), but she rejected him. He feels sad/unhappy and despair, the four pairs of oxymorons suggests what he thinks of love. He describes love as feather, bright, fire and health when it is good, because feather means his heart becomes light and joyful without any burden, bright is when he feels happy and thinking openly, fire means it is getting exciting and health is when love is doing good to him; on the other side, he describes love as lead, smoke, cold and sick when it is going bad because lead indicates that all the unhappiness is dragging on him, smoke is when he chokes in love where it is going really bad, cold is when his partner doesn’t care about him and the relationship is getting worst and sick is when love is harmful to him in some ways. All together Romeo thinks that love can vary a lot, it can also be confusing, mixed up and becomes chaos, so he is really disturbed.

Similes -

1. This is one of the lines of Juliet’s nurse, she is trying tell how she took care of Juliet, and here she talks about something that happened to Juliet when she was small many years ago. This is the story of Juliet running around when she was a baby, but Juliet tripped and fell on the ground face first and ended up with a big bruise on her forehead and she was crying. So the nurse compares the bruise as big as a cockerel’s stone (or cockerel’s testicles). She uses this kind of foul language because she is less educated.

There were many different things going on at this time in July 14. The Germans were deep into Russian territory. The allied forces were facing the Germans at the English Channel, and were planning a full-scale invasion of Western Europe, but the time was not right to do it, so they decided to raid the port in Dieppe, France.

The main reason for the raid was to take the German’s attention away from Western Europe, and make them focus more on what was happening in England and try to con them into putting more men at the Channel. This would also give them an opportunity to use new types of weaponry and different techniques they may be able to use on the opponents from Germany. The weather was tough in Dieppe for the month of July, so there were plans to not even attempt the raid on Dieppe, but they did.

On August 1, 14, the allies raided Dieppe, led by the Canadians as the main unit. The attack involved 6,100 troops, and roughly 5,000 of those troops were Canadian. The rest of the troops in the raid were either American or British.

The raid involved 8 allied destroyers, and 74 air squadrons. There was roughly 16 kilometers of beach along the port of Dieppe, and there were 4 attacks taking place on the beach and one raid, taking place on the actual town of Dieppe. Each force was assigned a place to attack, which included Pourville, Puys, Berneval, and Varengeville.

Order Custom Essay on Dieppe

While troops were going towards the eastern coast, they encountered a small German convoy that alerted the German defenses that were on the water. That was not the least of their problems, as they were going through the narrow beaches of Puys, there tactic of getting there was surprise, and darkness; yet neither of them worked. As they were delayed getting upon the shore, they encountered daylight, and the German machine guns had clear fire. Only a few troops were actually able to get over the seawall, but there were to few to do any damage. The rest of the troops were pinned down on the beaches, shooting at machine guns, and were forced to surrender. Of all the troops that landed, 00 had died on the beach and 0 later died of severe wounds. This was the worst one day total of deaths that the Canadians had encountered throughout the war so far. This failure to clear the eastern part of the beach allowed the Germans to invalidate the main attack.

Meanwhile some surprise was achieved on the western coast as they went in according to plan and destroyed the guns in the battery near Varengeville, and got out safely.

At Pourville there was a good degree of surprise as the contingent faced light competition on the beaches, but the competition became harder as they advanced three kilometers before they were forced to halt. While withdrawing from their mission and going back, many were killed or wounded, but because of their courage, many of the troops got back safely and reunited. But the same was not to be said for the rearguard, as it was decimated and were forced to surrender because they ran out of ammunition.

Half an hour after these smaller missions, there was the main assault, which was to get into the town of Dieppe. There was heavy assault from the German machine guns that were placed atop the cliffs. One group got through and over the seawall, and to the town, but there was a false message sent to the ships saying that they were dying, so they sent more people in that got pinned down with intense German machine gun fire. With the raid, came along a tremendous air battle, which had left the allies down 106 aircrafts, all in one day.

This begs the question, was the raid necessary as a stepping-stone in the war, for the years to come or useless. Some argue that without this D-Day would not have been a success, others argue that it was a useless bloodbath, where many lost their lives. Of the 5,000 Canadians who left for the raid, only ,10 returned, and many of these men were wounded. There were ,67 casualties, including 1,46 prisoners of war; 07 Canadians lost their lives in the Dieppe raid. That leaves the question for each and every individual to think about. Was the Dieppe Raid, worth the casualties?

The Atmosphere of Doom in The Raven

Edgar Allan Poe’s life was unarguably the most awful lived by any one of the Romantic poets. The forty years that he lived were marked by death, severe depression, and insanity; themes that are recurrent in much of his poetry. Poe’s terrible life has an obvious influence on the atmosphere of impending doom that Poe creates in the poem The Raven.

One of the literary techniques that Poe makes use of in The Raven is diction. The mood and tone of the poem progress through Poe’s skillful use of alliteration and word choice. Poe begins the poem at a sad, somewhat tired pace with alliteration such as “nodded, nearly napping,” and “silken, sad, uncertain.” The pace of the poem quickens with the appearance of the “ghastly grim” raven who is “followed fast” by disaster. These two examples of clever alliteration show how the mood has changed from sad into frightening and how the tone has changed from slow and uncertain into fast and alarming. The mood continues to become more doom laden as the poem progresses and the speaker becomes more and more aware of the raven’s “horror haunted” purpose. The tone as well continues to quicken as the air grows “denser, perfumed from an unseen censer Swung by seraphim whose foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor.” This quote uses alliteration and skillful word choice as well as imagery to create an atmosphere of impending doom through the mood and tone.

Poe uses the literary technique of imagery in his poem to create an atmosphere of imminent doom. There is no progression with Poe’s imagery as there is with his alliteration and word choice, but rather there is an equal sense of doom throughout the poem. One of the first images that Poe creates is that of a “dying ember [that] wrought[s] its ghost upon the floor.” This image of the dying ember that makes the shape of a ghost on the floor foreshadows the death of the speaker at the end of the poem when his “soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor Shall be lifted nevermore!” The image of the “stately raven” “with mien of lord or lady” is one of a calm and composed “ebony bird” brings to mind the being death. Death is portrayed as an unruffled, stately being with an air of importance as is the raven. There is enough evidence through imagery alone in the poem to prove that the raven is a symbol of death. Another image that corresponds directly with the theme of impending doom is the image of “the air [growing] denser.” Air becoming denser is often a symptom of forthcoming doom in literature. The images that Poe skillfully includes in his poem help to create an atmosphere of imminent doom.

Custom Essays on The Atmosphere of Doom in The Raven

Poe makes use of the formal elements of poetry; rhyme, repetition, and meter in his poem to create an atmosphere of approaching doom. The rhyme scheme of this poem is ABCBBB, this ongoing rhyming of the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth lines creates a rhythm and continuity that leads the speaker onward towards the end of the poem where doom is looming. The second, fourth, fifth, and sixth lines in the first stanza rhyme with their equivalent lines in the following stanzas as well as with each other. For example, in the first stanza lore, door, door, and more correspond respectively with floor, Lenore, Lenore, and evermore of the second stanza. Again, this repetition of the same rhyme scheme and the same continuing rhyme creates rhythm and continuity that leads the reader closer and closer to idea of doom. The repetition of the last words of the fourth and fifth lines of each stanza also contributes to the progression of the atmosphere of the poem. The repetition of words creates a sense of urgency in the poem that causes the reader to read quicker and with a heightened sense of pressure.

Poe’s use of the literary techniques diction, imagery, and form in his poem The Raven help to create an atmosphere of impending doom. All of these literary devices help to create an atmosphere of foreboding that culminates in the death of the speaker. Poe uses alliteration and word choice to show the progress of the mood and tone of the poem which presents an atmosphere of doom to the reader. Poe uses imagery to create a representation of death and of imminent doom. Poe makes use of the formal elements of poetry with his rhyme scheme, meter, and repetition contributing to an atmosphere of doom. Through literary devices Edgar Allan Poe was able to convey an atmosphere of imminent doom in his poem The Raven.

Loyalty

During the aftermath of the 7 years war, Great Britain had obtained supremacy in trade, a colonial empire, and naval supremacy. They had succeeded in defeating France, and were presented with a couple of problems in front of them.

At the time England was heavily in debt to Prussia when hiring mercenaries to help fight the war. England also needed more money to maintain military and naval defense of New England. England was no longer a trading empire; he was now an imperial empire. Yet the question was how does one run an imperial empire? England pretty much made this up as they went along.

The colonists had benefited the most during after the 7 years war. Great Britain had supremacy in naval forces, and in trade. Lots of new land was presented to them after the 7 years war, increasing there security. During the time of 160-1641, Cardinal Resouli made titles for middle class men. In response the middle class paid back the government in thanks. Such should the colonists, have not hesitated to pay back England, after fighting a war for 7 years, which benefited them the most.

Write your ACTS research paper

At first England decided to identify their problems. Indians had been attacking their forts, and they thought it was best to purpose the Royal Proclamation of 176. The proclamation stated a temporary halt to settling west of the Appalachians. The purpose was for an organization of western frontier, maintaining a realistic presence and paying for the war debt, while avoiding trouble with the Indians. In the colonies when the Board of Trade influenced salutary neglect, the colonies could basically do whatever they wanted if they were still making money. The problem was, there was a lot of black marketing and smuggling going on. England had to try something new.

Unlike what is presented in Romantic history, England did not just randomly throw painful taxes at the colonists, until they were dirt poor. England even was hesitant to tax the colonies, so they decided to test it out, to see if they could collect any revenue at all. They issued the Sugar Act in 1764, which enforced a tax on sugar and molasses. About 5% of the population was actually affected; it was about a -cent increase on a gallon of sugar. This was not really a tax that infuriated the colonists, and it barely made a difference to them. This was mostly for England to see how the colonists would respond.

During the Currency Act of 1765, it stated that it prohibited the issue of any new bills and redistributing of existing currency. The reason was that Parliament favored a hard currency system based on the pound sterling, and was not able to regulate colonial bills. Once again, this tax affected only 10% of the population, the merchants. This shouldn’t have really been a big deal; the merchants already make much more money then the rest of the 0%. This was really more of an annoyance, not intolerable.

Since England was focusing its army in the colonists, there wasn’t enough room in all of the barracks. During the Quartering Act, romantic history displays this usually as soldiers barging into houses of the colonists, and acting all disrespectful. Actually the act was more of a small taxation, and affected the 10% merchants again. This act didn’t infuriate the colonists; they were having soldiers from the best army of Europe, protecting them from any danger. There safety couldn’t be any higher, they are under the control and protection of the strongest nation. Even if the soldiers were doing nothing at the moment, since the Indians were in the west, the colonists couldn’t handle the large amount of Indians attacking the unprepared colonists if the Indians made another offensive.

The Stamp of 1765 was more of a serious tax, compared to all of the rest so far. According to Romantic History, this almost made the colonists go “insane”. Of course, this was not the case. The Stamp Act required every colonist to purchase special stamped paper for every legal document, license, newspaper, pamphlet, and almanac. The purpose of this was to collect direct taxes from the American colonies in order to fianc. Afterwards the Stamp Act was even repealed.

The Declaratory Act of 1766 asserts the power of the King and Parliament, to make laws of sufficient power and being able to bind the colonies empire in all cases. Basically it said that England had total control over the colonies. Yet wasn’t this always true? When the board of trade influenced salutary neglect, the colonies were still under the British control, the only thing was, and they were being neglected. Never did the ownership of the colonies change. England wrote all the charter for the colonies, and the declaratory act was pretty much stating what was already known, almost like a reminder.

The Townshend Acts of 1767, enforced by “Champagne Charlie”. It was a tax on glass, paint, oil, lead, paper,

I wish, that I could’ve played outside like all other kids, and play hide and seek, swing on ropes and run around. I hate my dad he took away my life, my friends and my freedom. Why did he do that? Lock me up in here, this boring dirty old room. The walls are grey that looks like that of a jail cell or as if they had been the walls to a heavy smokers living room. The only light gives out dim yellow cloud and a horrible persistent buzz, but it isn’t even working right now. It has a cone shaped shade that used to be a brilliant white but is now the same grey as the walls. The only decent thing about this room is this window. I mean there’s nothing here just my bed, stool and mirror, but the mirror must have cracked ages ago this stool really gives me a bottom ache and my bed’s all lumpy and dirty. I wonder when the sheets were last washed or replaced, that must have been at least two months ago.

I remember that Ben had a really nice room with a comfortable soft bed; bouncy chairs and he even had a desk and wardrobe with really nice clothes, they were nice, bright colours and never had any rips. I wonder what’s happened to him, he can’t be any worse off than me, kept to the four walls of this lousy house. He’s probably married with a few children, a farm to himself and half a dozen slaves working his fields, feeding his pigs, milking his cows and plucking his chicken. Well, really he could be doing anything he could even be dead for all I know, maybe he went down in a plane because he always said that he wanted to be a pilot or was killed in a huge fire trying to save someone, well I think Miss Maudie said that when I was listening in on her.

I don’t know why all of the town people think I’m evil or just about to do something to them or something like that. I suppose it’s that gossiper miss Maudie, she told everyone that I stabbed dad, I wish I was brave enough to that though because he is so horrible; always shouting at me and keeping me from doing anything because I’m a failure, an embarrassment and all the rest of it. I wish someone would understand me other than Mr. Finch and the doctor, they’re the only ones that believe that I haven’t meant any harm to anything and I’ve been misinterpreted, I think that that’s the sole thing that irritates me the most.

That Scout girl is really cute along with Jem but he can be rather annoying at times, running up to the house peeking in through the windows, knocking on the door and then running, dropping notes and letters into the garden. Especially annoying was when he told all his friends that if they went near my house they’d be eaten or even worse taken hostage and then tortured. I love those kids though they don’t understand me but it’s fun looking after them and all. I think they appreciate my gifts but aren’t old enough to realise they should give anything in return but I don’t need that. That was really mean of dad when he cemented up the knot in the tree that was really my only way of contacting them without scaring them out of their sandals.

There they are playing with that good old tyre, I used to play with that before everything started happening with me and my father and the court. Ben and I used to have great fun with it pushing each other along the road and seeing how far we could roll it without it going off the road. I was always best at that; I could get it to go along the road for the length of five houses. I remember we’d leave it in the yard for the day and then pick it up after lunch and it’d be burning hot and we’d have competitions to see who could hold onto it the longest.

It wasn’t at all a loss to me when my dad died in fact I was celebrating it he must’ve been the meanest guy alive. However straight after him came my brother and he isn’t that much better really but at least he gets me the paper or a magazine when he goes down to the shops. I wonder if like he left anything for me in his will, probably didn’t, and I think he probably told my brother to take up his position in life because he just does exactly the same thing.

I wish that someone would persuade everyone that I’m not really as bad as everyone thinks and the real story of my life the victim of a merciless, classist, proud father. I wish that some one would come along one day and release me out into the real world and help leave every thing behind me like my name and myths “Boo”, it isn’t like I’m a ghost or anything at least I hope not. I wish I could get married ad have children and lead an ordinary life.

Metaphysical poetry is still as important and relevant today as it was in the late sixteenth century. It uses universal themes and beautiful language to appeal to modern audiences and expand the mind of those who read it. Metaphysical poetry is intellectual poetry. Intellectual poetry is that it makes frequent reference to the world of ideas and strenuous demands of the reader’s intelligence. The use of symbolism with layers of allegorical interpretation in metaphysical poetry was a literacy tradition and a habit of mind. The poetry includes the simplest themes along the surface of life, sorrow and joy, love, battle and peace. Questions that were asked long ago are still being asked today. Metaphysical poetry discussed these questions and relates to everyone who reads them, as the poets never answer the questions, only talk about them. The poets liked to explore things for themselves much like the community. They did not accept the orthodox explanations for both nature and the universe. With a world of changing values, religious, political and scientific, metaphysical poetry attempts to create a medium for the realistic questions of the complexities and diversities of personal experience.

John Donne is the most renowned of the metaphysical poets or as you called them, “old fogies.” His poetry was a progress of his own soul, his relationship with God and reflections on his sinfulness. It was the intrinsic limitations of the human condition, not the achievements of the students that made metaphysical poetry relevant in the sixteenth century. Universal forces such as love, the soul and death cannot be overcome or explained. Questions about such forces do not have a scientific explanation. Metaphysical poetry discusses these questions and relates to everyone who reads them, as the poets do not answer the questions. They leave the answers up to the mind to decide, believe in your own opinion and own answer on these inquisitions.

A good example of Donne’s poetry is “The Sunne Rising.” The universal theme he uses in this poem, much like the others, is love. In the first stage in the poem, it is almost like he is trying to lower the King by saying whilst youre out hunting, Im in bed! This is the device that Dunne uses by allowing us, the reader, to be privileged enough to enter his world by the form of closure. It seems like Dunne is trying to make you feel like his partner, see how she views him, make you experience what love in their world is all about, and just why they value it so much. In the poem he is saying that nothing else in their world exists, all that matters is each other and that no matter how much people try to mimic him nothing can match what they both hold in their hearts. The poem uses such beautiful language, using conversational tone, to dispute with the sun itself using every solar movement to fit his case. The opening in this poem is a mock hymn to the morning sun, he addressed the sun as “busy old fool, unruly sun.” Donne was angry at the morning sun as it woke him and his lover in the morning, then Donne degrades the sun by sating that he could make the sun disappear by only closing his eyes. He then says that his lovers eyes have blinded him because of her beauty and the sun is no longer a problem. We can sense Donne’s cocky masculine assurance, his elation and confidence diminish the creator of life to a harmless fool. Many of Donne’s poems like “The Sunne Rising,” are complex and complicated to understand and read unless they are studied well, this I feel is beneficial to the students when they study poetry, because poetry can not be learnt unless each poem is examined and read with precision. Metaphysical poetry must be examined and read carefully for you to understand and this is another factor about why metaphysical poetry should be studied at school.

In O Brother Where Art Thou, I was able to notice that there were several characters that related to characters in the Odyssey. The cyclops was the traveling Bible salesman which was also killed by the fiery cross but in the book he was killed by a fiery stake. Petes brother was the Lastergonian because he turned his brother in for money. Also, I dont know if any of you noticed this, but there were lots of pigs in the movie. The reason why was because Circe turned Odysseus man into pigs. This is probably the reason for the unusual appearances of pigs. The sirens were the ladies that were in the lake. There was a lot of just plain folk culture that was added to the movie that had nothing to do with The Odyssey. The water that washed the three men away and kept them from being killed was a represetation of Charybdis. Only difference, was that all three of the men survived, but in the book, only odysseus lived. Well that was all that i was able to think of but if any of you can think of anything else please post. Thanks a lot. I am fixing to type a bunch of wierd stuff! Sorry! jfakljfsd safjdklsjkflsda fsdafklsdahjfkls jkfjakljf

The term “ technological determinism / determinist ” can mean many things. The term, in the way I am going to be using it, “technological determinist” means; A point of view that a person has that has been derived from a technology perspective. However, the interpretation of this is a person who believes that we have come to a point in time where the technology or the utilisation of technology has shaped society.

Technology changed society?

The Car Industry

Take the manufacturing of cars as an example. In the past, when the mass production of cars came into existence, the work was all manual labour and there wasn’t much mechanised equipment back in those days. Not much later robotics was introduced into the car manufacturing industry, which was what the industry needed.

Write your How IT has changed society and how society has changed technology? research paper

Now days the car manufacturing industry is at its peak. The car industry has changed beyond recognition, yet there is still a human factor involved. Since the robots have been introduced a lot of good has come from them. One would be that production line only needs to employ a certain amount of people so the cost of production is low. The price of cars is relatively cheaper.

From a technological determinist’s point of view, the society has been shaped by the introduction of this technology. One way of looking at it would be that with the introduction of this technology society has gained a lot of ground with the means of transportation. We cannot live without having a means of travel in this day and age; it’s a necessity.

Society changed technology?

Mobile Phones

From a Marxist’s point of view you would argue that no, its not technology that has changed society but its society that has changed the shape of technology. A good example of this would be mobile phones. As we have seen past trends, if the demand is there then the products will follow suite.

As you are well aware that when the mobile phones were first introduced the phones were bulky, heavy and notoriously unpopular because of their size, appearance the kind of ringtones. However, because the public has had such a high demand of mobile technology the technology itself has changed dramatically during the past five to six years.

As the demand for mobiles is still growing the manufacturers are increasing pressure to provide better-equipped handsets that can cope with the increasing demand for information on the move. Thus the Marxist theory comes into practice where by you have the notion that society indeed has shaped the technology is and the way it’s manufactured.

Technology changed society?

PC’s

The introduction of the PC’s has changed the way we work, play, and communicate. If you look back to the way we used to communicate you’ll notice that the way we communicate now is not all that different from say twenty to thirty ago. In the past we had telephone’s a verbal means of communicating and the postal service, which although written and indirect was and is still a good means of communication.

The way we go about communicating with others is in essence pretty much the but with key developments that enable us to have real-time conversations with others. Who maybe miles away or just round the corner. Programs such as msn-messenger, Trillan and many others have enabled us to have these real-time conversations.

In business, the use of computers and information systems has progressed on to the next level; where by some computer’s function as expert systems, or knowledge based systems. If the computers were to be removed from some firms will be crippled and unable to function in the business world. A technological determinist’s view of this situation would suggest that indeed, the introduction of computer technology has shaped society in some sense. A Marxist point of view would argue that, because there was a demand for a new and easier way to do business and to communicate technology has had a logical progression.

Society changed technology?

Car Navigation and Traffic Reports

The development of these two technologies has been gradual to say the least. Society has changed some technology to better serve its needs. At first glance you think that how have these two technologies been changed and shaped by technology? Well its all quite straight forward, some people cannot read a map so the navigation system was developed for them. However, the system can be used by those individuals who can read maps.

It makes it a good invention and it’s easy to understand. While the traffic system has been incorporated into some radio / cassette but not all. These two technologies have profound impacts however; not everyone is so forefront and is willing to spend money on these added extras. A good idea that has not really taken off the ground.

A Marxist view on this would be that indeed society has shaped technology, however, even though they have shaped it, what would be the point if they do not make use of this technology? A technological determinist’s view on this would be that maybe the society did not give birth to the technology but the technology shaped a small part of society.

In conclusion I have found that though many technologies have been born from society there is evidence that some technology have shaped the society at large. I feel that in the age we live in it is difficult to know which technology has shaped socieey and which has been shaped by society.

I feel that there is no clear way in which I can agree with the technological deterministic or a Marxist view. There are points to both of these argeuments that state there is truth in both viewpoints.

Source G is a militia list that shows data of the different occupations people had in 1761 and in 1780. Both lists contain certain occupations and businesses that require certain skills such as a barber, plumber and an apothecary. Those jobs would require the knowledge to perform such trades and so the people living in Fore Street must have had the education to learn such skills.

Source Q is a plan of Hatfield in 1780. On the map it shows Fore Street and lists the names of businesses and trades which run along the road. Again there is a lot of skilled workers and some businesses, which would only have customers that were fortunate enough to use the trades and services. For instance there is a surgeon and a wigmaker living in the street these sort of people offered there services to only those that could afford it showing that there must have been wealthy people living in Fore Street at the time or such services wouldn’t have been available as they would not be able to earn a profit.

Source M is a Pigot’s Trade Directory from 1855. It lists all of the trades and businesses that were in Fore Street at the time. We can see again that there is the common pattern of skilled workers even as time goes on. For instance the tailor requires great skill in making good quality clothes for the rich showing there was a high status in Fore Street.

Source I is an extract from the 1871 census concerning Fore Street. As time has progressed we can see now that Fore Street is beginning to have important people living there such as landowners who of course must have the wealth in order to own the land and so this adds towards the fact that Fore Street seemed to have a higher status than other places.

Custom Essays on trades history

Source R is a plan of Hatfield in 101. We can see it has great similarities in its trades with Source Q. And so over a period of time from 1780-101 we can see that it still has the same workers. But there’s is a slight change in the fact that in 101 there is no surgeon or wigmaker living in the street unlike in source Q and there are a lot more pubs as time progressed. And so each of these sources proves overall that Fore Street was above average and did change over a period of time.
