The poem that I have studied is ‘Wind’ by Ted Hughes. This poem is about


a heartless force which clash’s into a house in a remote area. The poet is giving us a point of view, from the owners which are trapped inside. What I found interesting was that the poet uses simple & effective techniques to describe the force of the wind. It makes the reader see that we can never underestimate the forces of nature.


At the beginning of the poem the poet uses a metaphor to describe what it

is like if you were entrapped inside of a tornado. “This house has been far out at sea all night”. Also the poet uses personification to describe the winds power against nature. “The woods crashing through darkness, the booming hills, winds stampeding the fields under the window “. It’s like if the woods have come alive running off the power of the wind. Then day rose, the outcome of the brutal force had left the “hills” in “new places”. The poet uses a great simile to describe the sunrise, a dawn of a new day. “Flexing like the lens of a mad eye”. The middle of the poem takes place at noon. The man is trying to get some coal for the fire as he “scales” cross the house. The poet describes the “brunt wind” with a metaphor. “Once I looked up through the brunt wind that dented the balls of my eyes”. The ferocious winds have made the hills as if they were tents. ”Drummed and strained its guy rope”. The metaphor is used to explain the force of the wind. The hills metaphorically speaking have come off the ground. The poet is saying to us that we can never be secure for the force


The end of the poem, the poet describes the unfavourable atmosphere


inside the house, which beholds the owners awaiting in front of the fire not knowing what will happen next. “The house rang like some fine green goblet in the note that any second would shatter it”. The wind was getting stern second by second. “We grip our hearts and cannot entertain, book, thought or each other”. The poet uses this phrase to tell the readers that this may be the end. The last of there hopes have gone once they had felt “the roots of the house move”. This was the end, the end of the line. “The stones cry[ing] out under the horizons”, this metaphor was used to describe the incredible force against the stones. To us, stones are unbreakable. Whatever makes stones cry are unbeatable to us.


‘Wind’, was set in the three main time periods. Night, Morning, Noon.


Ted wrote this poem to show us that humans will never have 100% security, also that we can never underestimate the forces of nature.


The poem ‘View of the Pig’ by Ted Hughes is about a butchered pig, which a stranger reluctantly stays to look at. But then stays for another reason. He realises that he too could be that pig. This is what I found interesting about this poem, the fact that he describes in a poetic view of how the man sees the pigs corpse. The poem is telling us that ‘Life ends- Death is final!


At the beginning of the poem the poet explains when the man finds the pig “lay[ing] on a barrow dead”, and gives us a comparison of the pigs weight. “To as much as three men”. The poet explains the dead features that the pig had. “It’s trotters stuck straight out”, “It was like a sack of wheat”. The poet is just explaining what the man saw and how he described it to the human mind.


In the middle of the poem the poet seems to tell us that the pig had a special life of its own, which the man respected. The guilt of “thumping” the dead pig, but no remorse. The poet says that the pig is just a “poundage of lard and pork” & that the last of the pigs dignity is just now “ to dead to pity”. Its trying to tell us that anything and everything needs respect ‘Dead or Alive’.


The end of the poem explains to us the man’s view on pigs. He seems them to be “faster and nimbler than a cat”. The poet uses a metaphor to describe the squeal of the pig, “ the rending of metal” which to us is very annoying.


The poet also compares the strength of the pigs jaw to a“horse’s, they chop a half-moon clean out”. The man tells that “I stared at it a long time”. This tells us that he made a connection with the pig and he didn’t treat it like dirt. The man shows real respect to the pig, like if it was his own son.


‘View of the Pig’, was a well structured poem that told us that respect is everything. The man was a excellent role model. The poem also tells us not ‘to judge a book by its cover’.


The two poems by Ted Hughes, ‘Wind’ & ‘View of a Pig’ both use the technique, ‘Comparison’ .‘Wind’ compares the security of man-kind to the forces of nature, “the brunt wind that dented my eyes” & ‘View of a Pig’, the man compares himself with the pig’s corpse, “I stared at it a long time”.


Ted uses this technique in the right places, which gives it an excellent effect. Also Ted uses a well set out structure, each paragraph set in a time period. These techniques have made this poem, to me pretty interesting.
