A Sunrise on the Veld

A Sunrise on the Veld is about a boy who thinks the world revolves around him. He feels he controls how the world is run. Everything he does is because he wants it to happen. He’s always doing things to prove that he controls himself and not nature. One time he stayed up for three straight days in a row, then worked the next day to prove that he controls himself. The boy feels that he is invincible and nothing will happen to him.

One morning he was bird hunting and came upon a buck behind some bushes. He looked at the deer and noticed that there was something moving on him. He looked closer and saw that the ants were eating the flesh off the buck. He felt scared and pity for the beast. It came into his mind that he should shoot it and end its misery. He raised his gun, then lowered it again. He was starting to mature at that moment. What he realized was if he had not come, that deer would have died this way. He felt a little mad about this fact. Right then he realized that the world doesn’t revolve around him. This would have happened if he were there or not.

He started thinking that maybe an hour ago this buck was running free among the forest. Then he wondered why would ants attack a proud buck. He took a closer look and noticed one of the buck’s legs was broken. It dawned on him that maybe some natives threw stones at him trying to kill it for meat. Then another picture came to his mind. It was probably him that did it one morning when he shot at a shadow, then didn’t track it down because it was late and he wanted breakfast. This affected him greatly and changed his attitude towards the world and life. The next day, he would go back to that spot and think about it.
