Araby takes place in Dublin, Ireland and is about a young boy growing up, so to say. James

Joyce demonstrates the trials and tribulations of becoming an adult. There are many ways

that this story may be translated depending on the era in which you were raised, the religion

which you were taught, also the morals and values that were passed on to you from your parents.

Most children at some time in life have an infatuation with another person of the opposite sex.

For most, this is an almost inevitable happening. Is this wrong? I think it a major part of

growing up, a part of the learning process. There are also other issues that may be brought to the

surface after a more detailed look into the story. One of the issues that come into question is the

respectability of the priest. Quoting from the essay, “The former tenant of our house, a priest, had

died in the back drawing room. Air, musty from having been long enclosed, hung in all rooms, and

the waste room behind the kitchen was littered with old useless papers. Among these I found a

few paper-covered books, the pages of which were curled and damp. The Abbot by Walter Scott,

The Devout Communicant and the Memoirs of Vidocq. I liked the last best because its leaves

were yellow.” The Memoirs of Vidocq has been defined as a collection of sexually suggestive

stories about a French criminal turned detective. It is my interpretation that priests take an oath of

celibacy, they are not required to have never been sexually active. We are all human, and as

humans we to a greater extent have the same hormones and chemicals in our body. Of course at

some point in time, there is going to be sexual desire no matter who you are. This is only natural.

The essay does not state that he acted upon those desires. This is something the reader would

assume. Another quote from the essay, “He had been a very charitable priest; in his will he had

left all his money to institutions and the furniture in his house to his sister.” Some would be

appalled at the fact he had money to leave to institutions as in the oath they take as priest; they

also commit to a life of poverty. In my opinion, no matter who you are, you require some type of

money. There certainly are items that you would need at some point in time that your income

would not be able to supply in an appropriate time frame. Also, who is to say he didn’t have but

five dollars to his name, and left one dollar to five institutions? I personally feel that this young

man is just going through what we, as humans must experience to get to adulthood. Peeking at

Mangan’s sister through the blind indicates to me that he is scared of what is happening to

him, possibly a feeling of confusion. He is not comfortable enough with his feelings that he is

able to confront her with them. When the narrator reminds his uncle about going to Araby, he

states that he hung his heavy over coat on the hall tree and made it rock. The narrator says that he

could interpret these signs. At first, I thought that the uncle had been at the pub. However, after

re-reading the story, I started to feel that he probably had a long day at work, and he

was simply so involved with his responsibilities, knowing he has a family to take care of, didn’t

realize what time it was. The uncle states, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” I look at

this statement and feel that he worked hard all day long, completely understands why he wants to

go to the bazaar, gives him his money, and sends him on his way. I don’t feel that there was any

big “awakening” at the bazaar. I simply think that after overhearing the conversation realized how

foolish he had been acting and decided that maybe this was not the approach he wanted to take in

life.

. I looked at my watch and groaned, 5 o’clock. This was meant to be a holiday but o well this was fishin. This is the first time out on the open sea on my dad commercial boat with his fishin buddy’s. The rest were up and rearing to go but not me. Luckily I got up in time for burnt fish on cold toast. The smell of burnt fish stuck to my cloths as walked on to the deck. The boys were crowded around dad. He had hooked a stinger and it had been pulling him around for half an hour, I found hard to comprehend because that meant he had been out from before 4 0. The boats gentle sway all most put me back to sleep but the loud twang from dads line rang in my ears. I jumped and slipped; I didn’t hurt any thing but felt a bit sore the day after. Dad chucked me a rod and I found a cosy position on the bow. I was almost asleep when the line burnt through my fingers and I hooked onto a huge marlin of course I didn’t keep it for long because the “line” couldn’t hold it and the thing nearly pulled me over the side. The book Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry mainly deals with the struggles of one family trying to deal with racism and the effects it has on them and their lives. This is important to black people because it was not to long ago that slavery was ended. Racism in this book affects the characters because they didn’t try to stop the hatred that was going on in their community. It is also about the fact that laws were not followed as they are supposed to. This was done by not treating everyone the same. For example, when schoolbooks were given to the black community, they were books that the white kids destroyed and were to be discarded so they were given to the black kids.

There are several conflicts in this story. They are man vs. man, man vs. society, and man vs. nature. I will first talk about man vs. man, this happens when the two white boys fought T.J. Avery and accused him of robbing a store. In man vs. society, the hatred that was happening in Mississippi at that time is proof of this conflict. Finally the conflict with man vs. nature happens when Little Man springs out of his chair and throws down the book and step on it. Because of the racism in the story the conflicts are both internal and external. They deal mainly with racism and the effects it has on the people and their lives.

The turning point of this book is when the Logans cotton field catches fire to try and stop the distraction. The whole event of the story and what is happening changes. Everyone around the fire was trying to hang someone or not trying to get burned. Once the fire was started everyone stopped what they where doing to help put out the fire. The climax of the story is when everyone stopped to put out the fire no matter if it was black or white, hate or dislike was not the issue at the time. This is also the resolution because the prejudice is gone for a moment. The falling action is when everyone goes home.

The setting of Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry takes place during the 10’s in rural Mississippi. The setting of Mississippi has an important effect on the story and the white people there were very racist. The point of view in this novel basically creates the whole story because it is a child telling the whole story and not the average adult. Cassie Logan tells the whole story in extreme detail, since everything has to do with her life and innocence. The mood in the story also plays a big roll. The mood is suspense, happiness and peace all as one.

There are several themes in the book Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry. One of the themes could be best described as when someone feels that everything has went wrong, he could still have the pride of his family and friends. Courage comes only to those who earn it could be the other theme. The last theme involves the difficult situation life presents to you and the need to stand tall and don’t let anyone bring you or your confidence down.

In conclusion to Roll of Thunder Hear My cry I thought that the book was very interesting, but I wouldn’t read it again because of all of the racism in the book and I don’t like to hear nor read about racism. I would tell all of my friends about this book, because I think that this is a good book. I also think that my friends would enjoy this book, better than I would. The only time that I would read this book is when I have to do a book report or project. Other than that I thought the book was a wonderful book.

OH MY GOD! Please save me! Am I alive? I cant feel my legs or my arms. Where am I? Am I alive? What happened to me? How did I end up outside of the car? STOP TOUCHING ME PLEASE, WHO ARE YOU? Where are my clothes? Why are they putting me into an ambulance? Please someone tell me what is going on?

On the day I was supposed to be arriving at school, Saint Michaels College, I ended up at the hospital with cuts from windshield and window glass, burns from and air bag and bruises. I was hit head-on by a drunk driver, and I could have lost my legs or my life. To this day, I am terrified to drive my car for fear that Im going to be hit again. This time, maybe it will kill me?

Goodbye guys! I will see you when I come home next weekend, I said to Andy, Timmy and the rest of the gang with whom I spent most of my summer. Today, I thought would be like a birth for me. I was going to a new school; a new life is starting over for me. As I walked to my car, I looked around the green hills of cow-grazing ground that all summer long I had played upon and thought to myself, DO I seriously know what I am doing? Oh well, whether Im ready or not I have to go; cant disappoint all those who are depending on me. So I walked to my car parked behind the giant oak tree. CLICK. I open the back drivers side door to get my sneakers to change into them. I sat down, leaned up against the jolly giant and changed from sandals to sneakers.

Once I had my sneakers on I stood up, threw my sandals in the back seat, slammed shut the door and hoped in the front. I took a few minutes, I remember goggling at the dashboard. It was black plastic of a hot barbeque grill. OUTCH! When I touched the steering wheel, suddenly my hands became frying eggs. Then I frantically threw them up waving my hands in the air like wings. When free of throe, I started the car.

Oh, how I hate Andys drive way. Its so long and narrow, I said quietly to myself. I best go 5 mph, I thought to myself. The sounds of Bryan Adams, Canadian Zeus, singing out of the speakers has me hypnotized and ready to roll. Half way down the hill I realized I didnt have my seat belt on. I reached down to latch myself in. I looked up and … BANG! CRUNCH! SMASH! She hit me heat on. Is this was my first last moment?

I woke up in the grassy fields that I spent all summed playing in. I looked up and see my car all smashed to pieces. How the hell did I get out of that? I thought. Hurled from the vehicle was the only explanation. Arms burnt and legs bleeding I crawled up Andys driveway with screaming cries ANDY HELP ME! ANDY! TIMMY! Im bleeding. Then I wake up in the ambulance.

STOP TOUCHING ME, PLEASE, WHO ARE YOU? I said.

Please miss, we are only going to help you. Youre going to be alright, said the Medic.

At about 6 oclock, after my last x-ray, my parents were able to take me home. Scared, I cried all the way home for my father had to hold me in the car. I hate cars and I hate driving. Hit; head on. 100 PM. That girl hit me head on. She had no insurance, no license, and no registration. Inebriated that she was! She was driving a stolen car and she almost stole me life.

Edward Abbey was born January , 17 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. He grew up in the Depression in a family always on the verge of poverty. His father worked many jobs to support the family. His mother taught school and played the organ in church. His father was a dedicated socialist. His mother was an early proponent of ordination for homosexuals.

Canyonlands National Park, Utah is where the season in Wilderness begins, specifically in the park which is his home base, he has a” little tin government housetrailer” in which he lived for six months of summer during three different seasons, he watches over the Arches National Monument. He travels this expanse of land, containing arches, carved out by the desert rock over time of erosion I guess. Cleaning up after weekend tourists, looking for lost or confused hikers, and simply taking part in the world of nature, which surrounds him.

In the introduction of Desert Solitaire his love for the desert is easy to see. When he quotes “Those were all good times, especially the first two seasons when the tourist business was poor and the time passed extremely slowly, as time should pass, with the days lingering and long, spacious and free as the summers of childhood.” When you read the author talks about the desert so much its like the desert is playing a role.

Each essay in the book unfolds uniquely in its own way. The author is simply writing out of the world that he stays in. It is not hype or fun to him, it is simply just his world. But he explains it in a way as to draw every bit of goodness from it. The author writes of things importance. He writes of the land surrounding him and its like he cherishes every moment. He writes to preserve the nature that he is a part of and it is disappearing so fast. He also writes so other people may also take part in enjoying nature.

Black Like Me Skin Color

What is the value of skin color? In the biological point of view, it is worth nothing. In the social point of view, it represents community standings, dignity, confidence or something people have never imagined. In the story Black Like Me, by John Howard Griffin, a white Southern reporter, who is the author and the main character, experienced an unforgettable journey in the Deep South. Mr. Griffin has a heart, which is filled with curiosity; he therefore undertook a significant project. He took several medical treatments to change his skin pigments from white to black in order to write a report. To create a successful project, Griffin had to leave his wife to be a temporary African American. Being an African American brought him many unfair encounters. However, after he changed back to a Caucasian, the attitude of everyone had immediately turned, and they treated him well. Mr. Griffin felt bad, and he told everyone about his experiences by writing books and attending press interviews. Throughout these hard times, one can read this book and find out the characteristics of the author, how he saw the light bulb, and the truth that he wanted people to understand.

Mr. Griffin was a middle age white man who lived with his wife and children. He was not oriented to his family. He decided to pass his own society to the black society. Although this decision might help most of the African Americans, he had to sacrifice his gathering time with his family. “She offered, as her part of the project, her willingness to lead, with our three children, the unsatisfactory family life of a household deprived of husband and father” (Griffin ). Leaving Mrs. Griffin and his children would deprive them of the care they needed. Even though he was not oriented to his family, he was full of courage. He was willing to discuss topics that people hesitated to talk about, trying new ideas that people were afraid to do. After turning back to his own skin color, he attended most media conferences and also wrote books about what he had gone through. During those interviews, Griffin was very considerate. He requested Wallace, a reporter, to report carefully so that he would not hurt his African American friends. “Please… Don’t mention those names on the air. I’d be afraid their lives would be endangered, and they were my friends” (Griffin 14). In addition, he was a man who never gave up. He insisted on remaining among the black people despite how he was looked down upon by the whites.

Order Custom Roles In Our City paper

Griffin was very civilized. He would not use violence to solve the problem, even if he were treated badly by the whites. He gained success after conquering over all of the difficulties, and his persistence should be taken as an example by the people of today.

During adverse circumstances, Mr. Griffin saw the reality of the cruel world. On his way to Mississippi, he rode on a bus, and there was a ten-minute break. He asked the driver whether he could go to the restroom or not. The driver forbade him and commanded him to go back to his seat. Then, Griffin tries to argue with him. “No sir, but the others --- you mean I can’t go to the“(Griffin 6)--- He did not have a chance to argue, because the driver kept on interrupting him. From this incident Griffin realized that the blacks always did not have a chance to protest. In addition, after he turned back to a white, in the same place the same people treated him totally different surprisingly! He was so shocked when everyone surrounded him with smiles and courtesy because he forgot that he was not a black. “I was the same man who could not possibly have bought his way into this room a week ago” (Griffin 1). People should not judge a man by only his or her skin color. Although they have different colors, it does not represent that they have a bad heart.

The author wanted people to understand that there were many unfair cases in the world, but everyone has to be brave to face it. He once read a case from the newspaper. In Mississippi, there was a white man who killed a black man, but he was released. In fact, besides the Deep South, there were many similar cases. Racism is getting more serious in this world. People should care about each other regardless of their nationality, then the universe will become more harmonious. Moreover, people should learn from Griffin’s bravery. He was willing to tell everyone what he experienced and how white people do wrong. Everyone should always strive for the rights, which they deserve.

Black Like Me was a very touching, adventurous, enlightened, famous book. I have never been discriminated by someone. However, my friend has experienced this pitiful fate. Being discriminated by someone is not hard to bear with. Furthermore, I believe that this is a very persuasive book for recommending to friends. In Mr. Griffin’s report, readers can clearly see what was happening to the African Americans in those days, how much effort they have to put in order to survive in that cruel world. After reading this book, one might change to a better point of view. Finally, one will realize how brave the author was, how he found the truth and the fact that he wanted everyone to know.

This dead butcher and his fiend like queen, is the way in which Malcolm describes Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Describe the way in which these two characters changed during the course of the play.

At the beginning of the play Macbeth is seen as a courageous soldier who is loyal to the King but is corrupted from the witches prophecies and by his and Lady Macbeth’s ambition. This is because of the weakness of Macbeth’s character and the strong power of Lady Macbeth and how she is easily able to influence him. Her strength motivates him at the start but after he realises what he has done it is himself that continues in his murderous, bloody path. At the beginning of the play Lady Macbeth appears as a kind wife of Macbeth’s but underneath lies a scheming and treacherous woman.

In the beginning of the play Macbeth is a strong soldier who fights for the King without mercy but his strive for ambition and his curious nature leads him to the witches who give him a prophecy. Banquo realises that there must be a trick hidden in the witches prophecies somewhere but Macbeth refuses to accept that, and when Lady Macbeth finds out about the witches her strong desire for ambition and her cold nature leads Macbeth astray. Macbeth is a little ambitious at first, but Lady Macbeth’s far exceeds his and so she is able to get Macbeth to agree with her to kill King Duncan. Macbeth still has a conscience at this stage because he is very hesitant about killing the King but his weak nature over comes him. He has a conscience throughout the entire play as this is seen by the hallucinations of the dagger and the ghost of Banquo and his vivid imagination and his constant worry also provokes him. This is also evident in his terrible dreams which gives the solid theme that he has indeed murdered sleep.

Throughout the play we see the character of Macbeth change not from just the way he thinks and what we hear from the play, but from the actions he takes in the play, from killing Banquo, then having Lady Macduff and her children murdered, shows the insecurity that was present in Macbeth. After the murder of Duncan Macbeth becomes paranoid and his first step of killing the guards is one of many that Macbeth takes to secure himself. Macbeth is also very superstitious and this is shown when he believes the prophecy the witches told him that Banquo’s offspring would become Kings.

Towards the end of the play when Macbeth’s wife has died and the battle is drawing closer Macbeth shows some good which may have been. He wishes for a normal life for which he would have lived to an honourable age but he recognises that he has denied himself of this. Even when Macbeth hears that the prophecy has become true of Birnam Wood coming to Dunsinane, he rejects this idea and fights on until he realises that Macduff wasn’t born in a natural birth but instead was Untimely ripped from his mother’s womb. When Macbeth hears of this he realises what he has done and how he has been tricked by the witches but instead he realises that it is useless and so he fights on only to be slain.

Macbeth can be summarised into a character although strong physically he is very weak mentally and it is this weakness which causes the downfall and change of Macbeth. Other factors do however also contribute to this change such as his wife whose ambition is very strong at first and is much more stronger mentally than Macbeth but it is also Macbeth’s ambition and his trust in the witches which ultimately change him.

Lady Macbeth seems to be almost opposite compared to that of Macbeth in physical and mental power. Lady Macbeth is the person who is able to persuade Macbeth into killing Duncan, assuring Macbeth that it will succeed, as Lady Macbeth’s ambition is far greater than that of Macbeth. This change in the character of Lady Macbeth is apparent after she reads the letter from Macbeth as she goes and talks to the evil spirits to make herself evil with lines such as Fill me from the crown to the toe-top full of direst cruelty! Make thick my blood. She goes to the extent of planning the murder of Duncan and assumes full responsibility of this. She exerts a lot of power over Macbeth in this part of the play and even calls him a coward and this shows just how determined she is and how much ambition she has for her husband. It is this confidence in herself plus the persuasiveness on her words that makes Macbeth act on her words without hesitating.

After performing the necessary acts in preparation for the murder of Duncan she thinks of performing the act herself but shows a sign of humanity and doesn’t because it resembles My father as he slept. After the muder has been done Lady Macbeth shows just how strong a person she really is by using kind words and confidence to clam Macbeth down and prevent him going insane. Lady Macbeth however jokes with Macbeth about forgetting the incident as These deeds must not be thought after these ways so, it will make us mad. Afterwards she gets the daggers that Macbeth had brought with him and smeared them with blood and then told Macbeth to change into a nightgown. At this point Lady Macbeth is in complete control and has tried to make Macbeth free of guilt even though he in fact did perform the deed.

Lady Macbeth is then able to exclaim in horror What! In our House! to the murder of Duncan but whilst in complete control, to draw away the suspicion from Macbeth. When however she finds out that Macbeth has killed the guards she faints Help me Hence but is this a another sign of an act to again draw away the suspicion from Macbeth or did she faint from shocked dismay. I believe she was shocked because I think that Lady Macbeth was surprised that she was able to get Macbeth to commit the murder of Duncan, but was shocked at how over one night and in fear, Macbeth could kill two more men in cold blood.

Lady Macbeth is still strongly in control as the play proceeds and is able to handle crises very well which is shown at the banquet incident where Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo, but Lady Macbeth is quick to lie for Macbeth to conceal the real ideas that are happening. As Macbeth progresses with his evil acts, however, Lady Macbeth starts to go mad which is almost like what her prophecy mentioned. She also hallucinates like her husband but this time about trying to cleanse her hands of the blood that will not wash off. Even though she may be a strong character greatly supporting her husband she is reduced and battered by the deeds and her conscience which she was able to rid from Macbeth, eventually drives her insane. She then kills herself unable to remove the damned spot. At his wife’s suicide Macbeth has already thrown away his conscience, so much so, that Macbeth commits even more evil acts afterwards without even admitting her to his conscience.

Over the course of the play Macbeth and Lady Macbeth greatly change with respect to their characters and their personalities. Although Macbeth was weak at first it was the strong Lady Macbeth who helped him through the first murder but in sacrifice to controlling Macbeth and his conscience she lost control of hers and in consequence turned insane and killed herself. Thus in the end it was worthy to call Macbeth and his wife a dead butcher and his fiend like queen but it must not be forgotten that at the beginning of the play Macbeth and his wife were ordinary nobles at the time.

With such a background it is easy to see why tourism is a big component of its gross national product. The well being of the Egyptian economy is highly dependent on a good year of tourism. The whole business of tourism has relied on the ancient monuments and relics of the past, but in recent years there has been a huge effort to create more modern tourist attractions like resorts and golf courses. The combinations of the old and new attractions comprise the biggest sector of the Egyptian economy.

For the most part it is said that Egypt consists basically of six different tourist sites. Three of the sites; Alexandria, Hurghada, and Sharm El Sheikh are coastal hotspots. They consist of many of the newer resorts offering many activities to its guests like water sports, casinos, nightclubs, and golf courses. The other three sites; Aswan, Cairo, and Luxor are the more historical tourist sites.

Although Aswan doesn’t hold that many historical monuments, the other two, Cairo and Luxor, are overflowing with them.

Within a few of these sites are contained some of the most awe inspiring and ancient monuments known to man. Now when you first hear the word Egypt, you directly focus your attention to the Great Pyramids of Giza. It is easily one of Egypt’s most visited monuments and one of the world’s largest tourist attractions. The ancient Greeks considered the pyramids to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Custom Essays on egypt

One of the greatest things about the Sphinx is that the purpose of it is still unknown and highly debated on.

The Sphinx is known in Arabic as Abu El Hol, which means “Father of Terror”.

The actual name of Sphinx was given by the Greeks, who believed it was a representation of the mythical winged monster with a woman’s head and lion’s body who proposed a riddle to the Thebans and killed all who could not get the correct answer (Tourism and Entertainment). Many of the artifacts found near or in these ancient Egyptian monuments are now stored in the Egyptian Museum. The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities was built in 1858 right in the middle of Cairo at Al Tahrir Square. The museum itself houses more then 100,000 of Egypt’s relics and antiques from virtually every period of its history. The exhibits are arranged chronologically starting with the Old Kingdom and going all the way up to the Roman Empire. “If you spend one minute at each exhibit, it will take you nine months to see everything”(Tourism and Entertainment). You can just imagine the shear size of this massive building just by the last statement (Tourism and Entertainment).

The population of the country of Egypt is roughly 60 million people. Now just imagine how important the tourism sector is to the population when 10 million people have jobs directly or indirectly related to it.

This is easy to see when you find out that the average visiting businessperson spends about $40.00 a day.. In 10, the gross domestic product reached 4 billion, of which 10% of that was a product of tourism. With the average number of tourists each year around 4. million spending about .5 billion annually, it’s easy to see why the percentage is so high (Zohery).

One of the problems is that many of Egypt’s ancient monuments are being adversely affected by the high amount of tourist traffic to the area. Affects of this have already been seen. In February of 188, a 500-pound chunk of limestone fell off of the Sphinx. What used to be true was that these great historical monuments had been protected for centuries by huge drifts of sand that have long since been cleared away to make more room for the tourists. What is happening as a result of this high traffic is all the evaporation that occurs. This leaves salt deposits in the pyramid, which wears away the stone, and this also happens on the walls where the art on the monuments are wearing away. Until recently, traffic was allowed extremely close to the monuments. What this did was to make small rumbles in the ground, which over time has started cracks in many of the monuments. Another problem Egypt has is its high pollution. All the smog from the cars and factories are producing acid rain that is falling on the monuments mostly made of limestone and wearing them down.

The Egyptian government needs to take some precautionary action to counteract or at least soften the blow of many of these environmental factors. The country itself boasts about 10,000 antique sites that are irreplaceable.. The tourist sector reached an all time low with 10 million employees affected with a 0% unemployment rate. Another incident, this one of terrorism, occurred in 17 when there was a massacre of 0 foreign tourists in Luxor. Total visitors to the country the following year fell 1%. Only in recent months have the number of tourists begun to reach the amounts it used to be (TED).

While the Egyptian government is making an attempt to develop more tourist attractions to the country, they need to preserve the ones that they already have. Only with a combination of both the old and the new will the Egyptian tourism sector continue to thrive.

The Liars Club

Custom writing service can write essays on on the book lairs' club

This story is about a girl growing up in a poor society. Where she has to survive the troubles of their parents and which time takes its place. Her name is Mary Karr and the book the Liars Club is about her childhood life. She uses many examples so she could explain her life to us more easily with imagination. As she tells her story, her childhood, she goes through many situations where she is scared. Like for example, when she was eight years of age, her babysitter made her give him a blowjob, how scary is that? What kind of life did she live?

Mary Karr had a typical childhood that most average poor white society lives through, in my opinion. Her mother is not exactly a whore but for her to survive she thinks she has to be with a man, and that she has to be married but Mary says thats not true. I say that is true because in the story, Marys mother tells the story that she had two other children, a boy and a girl, and that she needed a man to help her bring her children to her custody but she finally met a man (Marys father) that was willing to help her but, the children were teenagers and the children did not want to go with Marys mother. So for her whole life she was depressed (that is what Mary made her sound like). I feel sorry for her but she had to realize she had other children and she had to take care of the other children instead of making her new girls life miserable. Imagine how miserable the girls were. At a point in Marys life her parents divorce, and some point later on, the girls wanted to leave their mothers side because she was suicidal and she wanted to get in trouble so she could have gone to jail, now how messed up that is. I understand her life the way she made it sound, her mother was responsible for her living this horrible childhood. I also feel sorry that she had to go through her grandmothers death and that had to happen because time took its course. The only thing I could say that Mary, at his point in her life, was a child that could do anything except live with these depressing stages of her family. Marys mother found Hector, which made her life more horrible than it was. Hector is a bartender from Mexico, who came to America with Marys mother to live in a town that the children never knew so just she can by a bar and make Hector life happy. I really can not say anything about Mary because this point of her life when she was a child and she was being taken care of, like what major decisions could a child make except to live with her horrible family and wait for time to make her free. Finally her mother gave up and decided to live with her father again, maybe because of the children. Then there were no problems, until the father died and there was a reunion with the lost children and from their Mary Karr left off (the last chapters).

I thought this book was very complex because the way she told the story made me lost. For every detail that happens to her, she describes with an object, event, and etc. During the book, she goes back and forth sometimes she is in the present and skips to the future and then returns to her present. It was hard to know if she talking about herself or if she talking about someone elses life. But the only thing I like about this girl is that she loves her sister, and I think thats the only good relationship in her life. Also, she does not envy anybody. She is like a good kid that makes no problem for her parents. She behaves like a good kid and thats what I like about her but I hate her storytelling skills, Im sorry but thats true. Sorry Melanie for saying this.

The fact that the Jeffersonian Republicans were strict during the presidencies of James Madison and Jefferson is very true. One you knows about Thomas Jefferson knows that he was against the idea of having this single government that was starting up, and would also know that he believed that the Constitution was the only law of the land and it should be strictly interpreted. During the presidencies of Jefferson and James Madison, the constitution was something not to be fooled around with, it was very definite in there minds. They also didn’t want a single federal government “ruling” over America because they thought that’s what they were escaping to begin with. The ideas of federalists seemed too broad to them and they were totally opposed to them.

Document A is a fragment from a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote, in it he says “Our country is too big to have all its affairs directed by a single government.” Jefferson never believed in a single government in the first place, and he thought that not only is this the wrong course of action because it seemed that the federal government had a lot of power, but also he thought that America as a whole was to large to be run by it. He also said “The true theory of the Constitution is surely the wisest and best the states are independent as to everything within themselves.” This also shoots at how he thinks thought that what the constitution was based on is how we should learn it, and enforce the laws that it was directing. The states in would be somewhat independent from each other but would still be united as a country. As stated in document B, Jefferson also mentioned that he thought that the government had no real power to enforce anything; the power to enforce laws lied in the hands of the states independently. But Jefferson wasn’t the 100 percent strict on his views about the constitution, as shown in document G, he knew that the United States would have to show some progression with the years going by, meaning that eventual modifications of the Constitution were inevitable. He also mentioned, in the same document, that those changes would have to be of the most righteous principle’s, no unjust amendment would be ratified. The federalist ideas opposed those of Jefferson and Madison, as seen in document D, they even tried to make the republicans look like hypocrites, stating that the Madison administration was doing things that were unconstitutional in the name of the federal government that they opposed so much. But in the end these harsh remarks turned into negotiating bargains, as federalist and anti-federalists came to agreements.

Jeffersonian Republicans will always be known as strict interpreters to the Constitution, as they should be because they were. They didn’t believe in a single government ruling over an entire united nation, they thought the powers belonged to the states independently. They also were thought the Constitution was the Bible of America, and that it couldn’t be touched and everything inside was to be known to the last letter. Their thoughts and actions have molded the U.S.’s government to the way we know it today.

In Macbeth, the witches prophecies seem to negate Macbeth’s free will. However, at some instances, Macbeth willfully chooses evil over good. The witches prophesies that Macbeth will be thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland. The idea of being King of Scotland soon comes to rule Macbeth’s thoughts and life. He could just let fate happen, but instead he willingly takes fate into his own hands.

Lady Macbeth talks her husband into killing Duncan, the King of Scotland. Macbeth could have said no, which he did at first, but eventually he gives in and consents. He murdered Duncan while he was sleeping in Macbeth’s own house. The next morning when the people find out, Macbeth has the guards killed, for not watching over the King very well. He knows that it’s not the guard’s faults, yet he willingly has them killed. He got Duncan out of his way and Malcolm flees to England, so no one is standing in the way, and Macbeth becomes King of Scotland. Later on in the play, Banquo and Fleance become suspicious of Macbeth. So Macbeth hires men to murder both Banquo and Fleance. Banquo is killed, but Fleance is able to escape. Once Banquo is out of the way, Macbeth finds out that Macduff has gone to England to find Malcolm. Malcolm is the rightful heir to the throne and if he comes back he could overthrow Macbeth. So now Macbeth has the murderers go to Macduff’s house. They kill Macduff’s wife, and sons, as well as anyone else in the house.

Many people died because Macbeth chose evil over good. Macbeth did not have to kill anyone, or do anything to become King. If he had let fate happen, he eventually may have become King. This all started with the killing of Duncan and it progresses from there. Macbeths’ evil side comes out and he does kill anyone and everyone who gets in his way.

Sweet Safe Houses

Society comprises mainly of two groups the affluent and the miserable. It is believed to be highly inappropriate for the upper class to mingle with the lesser of the kind. Emily Dickinson mocks those people who consider it below their dignity to allow for the aroma from outside entering into their lives.

The houses in the poem are “sweet” and “safe”, which account for the fact that they aren’t simply means of shelter, but good strong houses. They don’t lack any amenities and are “glad” and “gay”, thus prosperous. These accommodations seem to be completely isolated from the destitute, locking their “bare feet” out. They are “sealed stately tight”, preventing the impurities from outside from penetrating through into the highly sterilized territory.

For most people, it is beyond their financial abilities to attend to the luxury inside their houses. Instead, they would be practical and focus on other basic requirements such as bread and employment. But the houses in the poem have “brooks of plush” and “banks of satin”, both expensive materials in abundance. The residents are obviously contented with their wealth. Dickinson talks about their “whispers”, once again reminding us of their reclusive way of life. The people are mentioned as “People Pearl”, which we relate to the pearls found inside oysters, precious gems.

Order Custom Sweet Safe Houses paper

In the third stanza, Dickinson is quite sarcastic about these people. She talks about their lives as being “stately treasures”. In reality, life is equally precious to everyone. But these lives seem to be somehow superior to all others. The poet uses the word “deface”, which has an incredible effect. It portrays a picture of harmony being destroyed. No “bald death” or “bald sickness” enters their lives. They seem to be of a higher order. But of course, this is presented to us in the form of sarcasm.

Dickinson paints a serene picture of perfection and eventually smudges it by ridiculing the pretentious way of livelihood. She comes across as being pessimistic in the last stanza when she talks about outsiders “humming by” in “muffled” coaches, careful not to interfere with the lives of these people. She states that the indigent do not even dare to die in front of these houses. “Death” in itself is a powerful word. But the high-class are so audacious as to challenge, control and conquer this element itself.

Dickinson emphasizes on certain facts and vivifies the poem using alliterations and dashes. The alliterations provide us with a calm picture following a certain pattern. She uses sounds such as “sss….”, “gl…” and “p..r…l” which are all soothing. As the poem progresses, she begins to use words producing hard sounds such as “bald” and “bold” in order to disrupt the serenity, finally stopping the use of alliterations altogether. The use of the dash expresses silence and the unexpressed. To dash is to stroke with violence, breaking into fragments, thus putting a different strain into it.

Finally, the irony is that Dickinson being a recluse herself dares to criticize those of her kind. Is she taunting herself? Doesn’t she realize that she too leads a solitary and isolated life? Are these signs of depression and frustration?

In conclusion, Emily Dickinson has managed to create calm and chaos, harmony and anarchy all together, jeering at the psychological aspects of self-concept self-esteem, self-image, self-identification and the norms of society. The poem portrays a clear innate psychological discrimination by the well-off to the impoverished.

The 4-H has played a large role in my life. I was able to find the ideal balance between school and activities with the 4-H. I was and still am able to accomplish and participate in many things that most people only imagine about. I have been lucky that I was able to find such a group. The 4-H has been there to help guide me through many wonderful experiences. While at the same time providing me with many enjoyable memories.

The first memory I have of the 4-H was when my sister joined. I was barely five and she was eight. She had just come back from seeing her new animal. She was so excited that I knew I had to join. So at age five, I officially became a mini member of the 4-H. I then became a full member at age nine.

When you are nine years old you are able to take a market animal to the fair. The very first market animal that I raised was a pig. Her name was Nina and she was a Hampshire Cross. It was a good experience because it taught me the responsibility of taking care of an animal. Although raising Nina was fun, my most memorable animal was Maverick.

Maverick was the very first steer that I raised; I was thirteen. At that age was five feet. Maverick on the other hand was nine-month-old baby who was five feet tall and still growing. He was also wild and would not let anyone near him to take off his halter. So I began the long process of breaking him. I knew what to do because my sister had been raising steers for quite some time.

Write your 4-H research paper

Every day I would go to his pen at five in the morning so that could tie him to the fence post. Since I could not go in the pen with him I had hang on the fence while dangling show stick in front of him to grab his rope. After I had completed that my next task was to pull him in. That was no easy feat. He was a seven hundred pound animal that did not want to be tied up. So while I tried to pull him in he fought and kicked and jumped around. I usually took me about half an hour to get him tied. This went on for almost a month.

I soon began to take Maverick for walks. My dad had to help me with this for two reasons. The first being that Maverick was only halter broken and that did not mean that he would walk nicely, that training took another several months. The second reason was that I was afraid of Maverick. If I did not get close to him with the rope then I would leave too much room for Maverick. All that room allowed him to charge me if I was not watching him. I was so afraid of him. I wanted to quit so many times but my parents would not let me.

I took Maverick to the fair the next year and received first in fifth in my market class. My proudest moment though was when I received third place In the showmanship class. Raising Maverick was one of the hardest things that I ever had to do not only because I had to face this huge animal but because I had to face my fear of him. I am glad that my parents made me stick to what I had committed to. I was able to learn that if I believed in myself with some help, I could accomplish things that seemed daunting at first.

The Constitution is the foundation of our United States government; it stands for any kind of bondage between the states and promotes a compact to join together. How can the Southern territory even ask to be justified in breaking such a strong bond, to be justified in ripping a nation in two and destroying the “law of the land” in which America is based solely on? Using the Constitution as legal evidence provides the clearest way to prove the South unjustified in their irrational decision to secede from the Union. The South was also clearly not prepared to make it on their own, as their own nation, with their one crop economy and their sad economic stability. The South sustained valid arguments as to why they seceded but none that solely justified their decision. Their arguments included voluntarily joining the union, the north going against the Declaration of Independence, and the questioning of judicial review. However the South was not validated in their treasonous acts, such as firing upon Fort Sumter and the formation of a new government, and unlawful childishness as they were breaking various articles of the Constitution.

Now, some Southern secessionists may argue that the states voluntarily joined together to make the United States therefore, they would be justified in voluntarily leaving the United States. But on the contrary, the Southern states did come voluntarily but they also voluntarily signed under Article VII of the constitution, reading “the ratification of the states shall be sufficient for the establishment of this constitution”, bonding them to the United States. The Southern secessionists may also argue with the topic of the Declaration of Independence. The argument consists of the statement “Whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government”. However, it was clear that the South made no attempt to alter it and turned right to abolishing it. Secession could be justified as legal under this statement but there is a flaw to this argument. The federal government could have been altered or changed through the Supreme Court if the South was truly unhappy with some of the laws, but they turned to treason instead. The South was also upset at the fact that they saw the constitution favoring the North and laws being passed were beneficial to the North. However, the concept of judicial review strengthens the fact that the Constitution is the base of America’s government and the United States cannot pass any one law that goes against what the Constitution says. The Southern states signed under the Constitution knowing all the facts inside of it so they cannot base secession solely on their opinion of the Constitution favoring one part of the nation.

Order Custom Essay on The Old Man and the Sea

At the beginning of the novel the author uses comprehensible language, and his style is very direct and classical. The narration is mainly in third person narrative, and at times in first person narrative. The author attracts the reader by presenting real life events, and emphasizing life difficulties in an old mans life. Even though he wants us to feel empathy towards the protagonist, he successfully presents hope and faith through the main protagonist. Also, he presents the quality of friendship through a boy and an old man. The first twenty pages are about an old man, Santiago, who can not catch fish as he use to. The old fisherman is at the twilight of his physical powers. The old fisherman has a friend, Manolin, who cares about him, and tries to help him in any way possible. Manolin acts like Santiago’s adopted son. Santiago is a very poor man, and for him fishing is his livelihood. Despite his age, Santiago is man with hope and faith in his fishing abilities. He goes on talking about baseball, and how great baseball players are heroes because their sacrifice them self for the team. He believes the great fish come in the month of September, which foreshadows future events. Also, Santiago mentions that eighty five is a lucky number, and I think the author is telling the reader that Santiago will get lucky with a fish on the eighty fifth day. The old man gets sardine-baits of his friend Manolin, and it seems like he is getting ready for a great catch...

… I feel the speed of narration is picking up, and the narrator is ready to finish the introduction and give us the core of the novel. In addition, the use of foreshadowing and similes is increasing, which probably will lead us to some action in the novel. Also, the narrator is emphasizing the relationship between the old man and the boy. It seems to me that the boy plays a role of a father, and the old man plays a role of a boy.

Consequently, a wild guess of mine, the author symbolizes the significance and strength of youth in the boy. At the other hand, the author shows the seniority as painful in the old man.

The old man and the boy talk about baseball, and Santiago resembles him self into his baseball hero DiMaggio, whose father was a fisherman. Santiago tells the boy that he is ready for a great fish (foreshadowing), and if he is not ready physically, he will defeat the big fish with the tricks and resolutions of his experience. Santiago does not dream about his dead wife anymore, but he dreams when he is young and he looks at the white lions on the coast of Africa. The novel starts with Santiago dreaming about the lions, and I expect some kind of symbolism behind them. Also, Santiago mentions the lions in parallel with the boy, so there must be some connection between them. The old man gets up and wakes up the boy. The old man feels very confident before they sail off fishing (foreshadowing). During his rows into the depth of the sea, the old man talks to himself how much he loves the sea and its nature.

He also resembles him self with the birds who hunt for existence, and have troubles getting fish. As he rows, he sets up his baits, and he does it in very captious and professional manner, not allowing any space for mistakes. He sees a bird circling on top, which tells him there must be a big fish or dolphin in the water…

• Third journal response page 4-45

... In the following ten pages the author is preparing the reader for the main setting, the setting of The Old Man and Sea. The author describes the nature of the sea and its environment, and he describes it through Santiagos fishing experience. Doing so, he emphasizes Santiagos relationship with the sea, and Santiagos livelihood in general. Also, I really enjoy Santiagos monologues, which to me give a great image of a man all alone in the sea. We can imagine an old man in a boat in the middle of the sea. The other part that arouses my attention is the authors description of fishs behavior after they bite the bait. In fact, the description is so well done that you actually swim, move, and you feel the pain with the fish. Furthermore, the old man follows a school of tuna fish, hoping it will lead him to a great fish. Also, he witnesses a small competition between a dolphin and a bird. The bird and the dolphin are after the same fish, and Santiago explains how the dolphin has advantage over the bird, and he is likely to capture the fish. As he floats with the current, the old man admires the turtles for their courage to eat the seas most poisonous fish. After he catches a ten pounder tuna, his line starts dangling, and warns him for possible great catch. Well, the dangling turns out to be something serious as the fishing line slides through the old mans hand. Soon, the sliding prospers into aggressive pull, and the old man already imagines a great marlin eating his bait deep in the sea. The fish in the sea turns out to be enormous in size, as it pulls the whole boat north-west for couple of hours without stopping. The amazing part is the ability of the fish to pull the old man into the open-sea with tremendous strength, which foreshadows a long lasting combat of survival...

• Fourth journal response page 46-57

… In this part the author emphasizes the importance of friendship between two individuals. In the novel whenever Santiago feels desperate of feels back pain, he calls the name of the young boy and he wishes for his help. Santiago believes that no one should be alone in their old age, because people need one another. The theme of friendship in the novel we see through the pair of marlins Santiago separates by killing the female, and the two wails that swim close to Santiago’s boat. Also, the author compares the hardship of the old man with the hardship of the big fish. When Santiago is fighting with the fish, he realizes that as much it is hard for him, it must be equally hard for the wish. Therefore, he decides to stay with the fish until he dies, the same way the wish will stay with the hunter. With Santiago’s conclusion the author presents the strength and the endurance of an old man. After a long time of solitude, Santiago has a visitor on his boat. The visitor is a young bird, who is tires from the flying, and finds rest on the old man’s boat. Santiago notices and despises the lack of strength in the bird, and warns the bird that it will have to be stronger in its life. Through the bird the author symbolizes a young boy who leaves the childhood and enters a life with responsibilities, the life of a grown up man. The old man cuts himself accidentally when the fish pulls the line, and Santiago blames him self for not focusing on the fish…

• Fifth journal response page 58-68

…I find this part of the novel very interesting, since the main character attempts to overcome his physical difficulties, as well as his psychological difficulties. The author illustrates the endurance, faith and one’s ability to overcome difficulties. The old man eats raw tuna to keep strong and healthy, and also he reduces all movements to minimum to preserve strength. Furthermore his right hand cramps, however the old man’s faith keeps him stabile and with the fish. The cramp is humiliating for the old man, as the fish is wounded as well, yet it has the power to pull a whole boat to survive. The part that catches my attention and my emotional side is when the old man says that he looks at the fish as a brother, yet he has to kill it. With this statement Santiago claims that he loves the fish for its resemblance, nonetheless he has to kill it to survive. And then the fish comes out of the water, and the reader once again experiences Ernest Hemingway’s ability to describe a situation with great success. The fish is beautiful, two feet longer than the old man’s boat. The old man remembers how he catches two fish with great magnitude when he is younger, except at the time and he does it with assistance of other fishermen. Furthermore, Santiago thinks of baseball, and compares his endurance with the endurance of the great DiMaggio, who plays baseball with back pain. Also, he admires the endurance of all animals in the wild life…

• Sixth journal response page 6-80

… Imagery is the first thought that occurs to me after reading this part of the novel. The author describes Santiago’s previous great adventures that associate with endurance and strength. For instance, Santiago’s hand-wrestling adventure with the Negro from Casablanca, in which he beats the Negro after a whole day of wrestling. The author makes a parallel between Santiago’s adventure with the Negro, and the adventure with the fish. The walls of the room where Santiago wrestles the Negro are bright blue colour, which are parallel to the sea water. Also, during the wrestling game blood comes out of the wrestler’s fingernails, which is parallel to the fish’s bleeding mouth and Santiago’s bleeding cuts. The author mention’s that the size of the Negro’s shadow is huge, parallel to the enormous size of the fish. At the end Santiago defeats the Negro, and in terms of parallelism to the fish it might be a foreshadowing to its defeat. After the fight with the Negro, Santiago realizes that he can beat anybody if he strongly believes in it, which again I suppose its foreshadowing to the fish’s end. In addition, Santiago physical condition is improving. Santiago keeps up with the fish’s activity, and he sleeps from time to time to rest. To preserve strength for the final battle, he eats fillets of the dolphin he catches…

• Seventh journal response page 81-

This part of the novel illustrates the hardship and the suffering of the old man on the sea. The author captures successfully every moment of difficulty of the old man. We see the old man wanting to sleep, however if he feels a sleep the fish might pull the line and set it self free. Santiago falls asleep and he dreams about fish, and then in the deepness of his dream he dreams about the lions when he was a young man. Dreaming about the white lions makes him happy, because it reminds him on his youth and strength. To create the mood the author wakes up Santiago with activating the fish and pulling the line. In addition, Santiago must feed himself with raw fish, which is rather disgusting to him, yet he eats it to remain strong for the final battle. This action reminds me when people are in war, and they drink their primary urine when there is no food in order to survive. And then the fish pulls, nevertheless Santiago feels that the fish is slowing down, and soon it will be their moment of battle. The author builds up the suspense by making the fish jump on the surface again, showing its magnitude and power. Santiago’s observes that the fish is fearless and confident; therefore he needs to be fearless and confident to kill it. Santiago knows the fish is hurting, so he proclaims that pain does not matter to a man, which shows his determinism and his will to kill the fish. It is the third day of Santiago’s adventure, and he stays with the fish in spite of all difficulties. Even though he proves him self many times in the past, he pursues the fish as his last prize in his fishing livelihood. Santiago is on his last quest in which he has to win, even at the price of his life. The fish is circling around the old man’s boat, and it is getting closer each turn. The old man fights with the fishing line, and he asks God’s help to kill the fish. As in real life situation, people in impediment always ask for supernatural solutions, even though they don not believe in it. This is it; the main character faces the fish. This is the moment where Santiago is to be or not to be. Will the old man kill the fish and fulfill his quest? Is he strong enough to conquer the fish…? Is his experience and resolution a match for the grand fish…?

• Eighth journal response page -104

… This part of the novel is very interesting for its triumph and its tragedy. The author clearly shows the ups and downs of life through the character of Santiago. In this part we see Santiago’s happiness in the moments of his triumph, and we see Santiago’s sadness in the moments of tragedy. Furthermore, Santiago kills the fish in a glorious way by piercing its heart with his harpoon. The old man astonishes himself by killing the fish, and he can not believe he finally kills the fish. He straps the fish to his boat and sails with the fish, rather than towing it. Santiago and the fish are one, and he feels invincible once again, same as he feels after he beats the Negro in the wrestling game. Santiago proves his manhood by beating the fish; however he admits he succeeds only for his trickery and resolution. He respects the fish for its dignity and beauty, and he calls it a brother. Later on, after all the happiness he goes through his head is dizzy; which foreshadows that his quest is not over yet. The quest of the old man continues as soon as the first shark attacks the fish and rips forty pounds of meat. Santiago describes the shark’s teeth metaphorically as a human hand. With this metaphor the author points out the in real life people are the ones who create good and bad deeds. When the shark attacks the Marlin, it seems like it is attacking the old man itself. Santiago picks up the harpoon and he kills the shark with passion and vengeance. He kills the shark as if the shark attacks himself, because the fish and he are one. The old man feels miserable for the marlin’s fortune, as the shark strips its dignity and beauty. The old man foresees future presence of more sharks, because sharks sense the marlin by its blood. He kills the first predator; though he looses the harpoon. How will he face the sharks without the harpoon? He is a strange old man, his faith is strong and his resolution is clear. He ties his knife to rod, and he is ready to take on the next shark that attempts to take his dignity; the great fish…

• Ninth journal response page 105-116

… In this part we see the death of the fish as Santiago’s crucifixion. During the long fight with the marlin, Santiago units with the fish physically and emotionally. Santiago wins the quest by killing the fish; however his fault lies in going too far out. The sea is a common symbol of life and mysteries of life. He goes into the depth of the sea where no other fisherman has been before. Santiago’s departure in the depth of the sea feels just as a kid eating the forbidden candy, or as Adam and Eve eating the forbidden apple. Santiago succeeds in his quest by entering the forbidden world, except he suffers defeat on his way back. The author allows him to take the Adam’s apple, and right after as god himself he punishes Santiago with the sharks. When the second attack occurs, Santiago kills a pair of shovel-nose sharks with his knife after they eat a quarter of the fish. Later on, another shovel-head shark attacks, and again after it chops the fish the old man kills it and looses his last cold weapon in the process. The old man looses his breath and his strength, yet he continues to fight off the sharks with a club. He fights till there is nothing left of the fish, and the sharks abandon him. After the sharks leave everything is silent, and the only thing that the old man can do is to go back home. He steers with ease, because the boat does not have the load of the spectacular fish…

• Tenth journal response page 117-17

…In the last ten pages of the novel we experience Santiago’s return from his quest. The reader can clearly see he is beaten, and he is at the edge of collapsing from exhaustion. He is all alone at the end, and by him self he anchors the boat with the leftover strength he has. Furthermore, he climbs the road with the mast on his back, but he must stop frequently to recover strength. This image creates pathos for the old man, and I believe it can soften every man’s heart. In my eyes Santiago is a hero who comes back from a war without his buddies. With great difficulty he reaches his shack and passes out. The next morning the young boy Manolin visits the man, and when he sees the cuts on his hands he starts crying. The young boy just by looking at the old man wounds feels the pain Santiago undergoes in the days he is missing. At the beach all the fishermen are looking at the enormous fish, and they realize Santiago’s greatness as man and a fisherman. In their eyes he does something that no other fisherman has done before. For the people of the village Santiago is not the thin and gaunt old man, he is the old man who catches eighteen foot monster of a fish. When Santiago wakes up the boy gets him coffee, and tells him that he will sail with him in spite of his parent’s desires. At this point the boy is maturing, and makes life decision to stay and learn from the great fisherman Santiago. Manolin comforts the old man by telling him that the he beats the fish, and that he is the winner at the end of the battle. That afternoon, at the beach couple of tourists stares at the spine of the fish and they wonder what happens to it. They get a brief explanation form a local fisherman that it is sharks. The tourist without interest in Santiago’s story understands that the spine of the fish belongs to a shark, and they indifferently comment on its beauty. The tourists are symbolic, and they represent the people who are passive towards life. The tourists look at the fish without understanding, and they are not aware of the magnitude of its significance. They are now aware of the suffering and endurance Santiago undergoes. At the end, Santiago again dreams about the lions in Africa. And this is the part I love and it electrifies my body. At the beginning of the novel the old man goes without catching a fish for eighty-four day and he dreams of the lions. Similarly, at the end of the novel after the old man returns with a defeat from his adventure, he dreams of the lions once again. The white lions on the coast of Africa represent the undying hope and confidence within a man.

And there we have it, after hours of hard work, the novel is completed and this is my journal response. I must say I enjoyed the novel, and surprisingly I learned from the old man about motivation, hope and courage. I learned about traits which are essential for my educational future. After all, I will be an engineering student and I will need the old man traits to go trough the four years of cool-hell.
